Produced for the community, by the community

The Enchanted Pegasus Fairy Forest Open to All Team were very generous, providing beautiful wooden fairy houses and doors, paints, and decorations for children to unleash their creativity.”

The Pegasus Fairy Forest is flourishing thanks to the efforts of young creators who participated in the Pegasus Residents Group (PRGI) and Waimakariri District Council (WDC) Fairy Forest Workshop, at the Pegasus Community Centre, part of International Children’s Day celebrations, on 3 March.

This forest was one of four created locally (also Pines Beach, Woodend, and Kaiapoi) with the support of the Council Community Team, volunteers, and associations.

Heidi Wood, Vice President, of the PRGI said; “We were delighted to have so many families and volunteers attend to help create something magical in Pegasus.”

She added, “The WDC Community

To find the fairy forest, park at the first Pegasus Beach carpark, follow the path toward the beach forest, stay left, and look for the sign.

Heidi concludes, “There is plenty of space for new additions, particularly nearer the beach end. We’re excited to watch the fairy forest evolve and encourage families to add their creations to make it uniquely Pegasus for everyone to enjoy.”

Tēnā koutou

It’s great to see the trees changing colour whilst still enjoying warm sunny days and balmy evenings, long may it continue.

On Page 47 there details of some vacancies we have in The Woodpecker Community Trust, so if you have time or are interested in any of these roles please do email me to let me know. We are looking for another Distributor role to help distribute to our deliverers. Our print / delivery numbers have increased with the growth in Pegasus and Ravenswood so are looking to increase our volunteer team to accommodate this. We could always do with more deliverers also, so if you do have time once a month for 30 – 60 minutes, we would love to hear from you.

Also on the same page is the notice of our Annual General Meeting which is being held on Wednesday 15 May at 6pm at Pegasus Community Centre. We always welcome visitors and guests to come along and meet the Trustees so please RSVP if you’d like to attend. Due to our ever-increasing database, we are now moving to Mailchimp to send emails out to all our advertisers and community contributors. If you are interested in receiving these emails with all our advertising and community contribution specifications, pricing, and

details, please let us know and we can add you to our mailing list.

I am very pleased to confirm we received two nominations to our board from the advert last month as well as a distributor.

As always, I’d like to thank you all for your feedback and contributions to The Woodpecker, without you there would be blank pages, and so appreciate your ongoing support.

I hope you all enjoyed a fabulous Easter and didn’t eat too many Easter Eggs?!

As I write this article (22 March 2024) we are sitting at 70 call outs for this year so far and I thought it was time to thank the businesses that support their staff to attend our brigade to those callouts. For your information, you can see the list of names on a board outside our station and on our fire engine. One of the new businesses in Woodend / Ravenswood is New World owned by Justin and Melissa Blackler and is one of those that have supported the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade in many ways – with donations of food / grocery items after big call outs and supplying energy drinks to put in our trucks for those long-drawn-out scrub and bush fires, amongst other things. Perhaps the best thing is allowing a staff member to attend calls as and when they occur.

call outs under supervision during the day. Getting to be a fire fighter is quite a rigorous process and requires time and dedication to achieve the rank. Once he has completed his training at the Brigade to the standard required, he will attend a 7-day course and come out as a fire fighter. He tells me each time he has gone out on a call, he has learnt something new and is enjoying the training immensely. I made a sneaky phone call to one of his trainers and she said he was soaking up the information and doing really well.

Kelvin’s Wife Lisa had an unfortunate occasion a while back to call out the Brigade due to suffering anaphylaxis. Both were eternally grateful to the Brigade – in Kelvins words ‘you were life savers that night when you came to her aid’. It was after that, that Kelvin thought he could help and give back to his community.

We have a new recruit who is at present training to become a fire fighter. Kelvin Wylie works in the Butchery Department at Ravenswood New World and is proving his worth by already attending a number of

Kelvin and Lisa have three boys between them ranging in age from 13 to 3 and they have lived in Woodend / Ravenswood for 4 ½ years, so they lead a busy life. We are really pleased to have Kelvin on board and look forward to seeing him progress in the Brigade and once again ‘New World’ thank you for letting him be a part of the team.

Our shed is actively out in the community assisting people, whether it be a handrail, a minor repair, or some painting. Easter Facts

The story of the Easter Bunny is thought to have originated in the 19th century and is now the most prominent symbol of the Christian holiday of Easter. German people had an Easter tradition of an egg-laying hare called ‘Osterhase’ or ‘Oschter Haws’, and children would make nests for the creature to lay its eggs. The rabbit was first associated with Easter in German writings during the 1500s. Germany also was the first country known to have edible Easter bunnies, back in the early 1800s. Many

believe that Americans learned about the Easter Bunny in the 1700s from German immigrants who settled in the Pennsylvania Dutch country.

What is the Easter Bunny’s real name?

Peter Cottontail

The Easter Bunny is a rabbit that delivers presents and eggs to children on Easter. The tradition goes back a very long way just like the ones about Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. His real name is Peter Cottontail, just like how Santa’s real name is either Saint Nicholas or Kris Kringle.

John Thompson gave an interesting historical talk on the port of Kaiapoi. He described the early development of the port to its subsequent closure as a functional port.

Kaiapoi wetlands.

The port area first began as a food source for the local Māori population and as Europeans began to settle in this area it became a port for the shipments of goods around New Zealand. From about the 1850s businesses arrived at Kaiapoi therefore they needed to export their goods to other parts of New Zealand. John Sim developed the port in the 1870s and thus began a thriving trading post in

Over the years the main obstacle to this port has been Waimakariri bar at the mouth of the river. It has taken many a ship to its watery grave such as the Tuhoe being the latest one in 2015. At the height of the port’s function there could at least be three ships in the port at one time off loading and taking on cargo. A lull occurred during the war time years and eventually the port reopened in 1958 with the arrival of the Paroto. Until its eventual closure in 1969 nine vessels visited the port over those years.

The research that had taken place for this presentation was excellent and I wish to thank the late Dale Brown for the work that he put into this and for John Thompson for his presentation of Dale’s material.

Pegasus parkrun Update

It’s been a stellar summer at Pegasus parkrun!

We have had several first timers joining the fun, and many achieved new Personal Bests on the 5K course.

Canterbury in general is starting to discover how good parkruns are.

We currently have parkrun events at Foster Park (Rolleston), Hagley Park and Board Park (Waimairi Beach). We are also welcoming a 5th event at Scarborough soon. There are now 44 parkruns across NZ.

Our local North Canterbury course is a two-lap route around picturesque Lake Pegasus, a man-made lake in the heart of Pegasus Town. The

beautiful surroundings and the lake’s mirrorlike reflection during the run make it a visually appealing experience when the sun is shining, and the sky is blue.

It’s not just for running, we encourage walking, jogging, volunteering, and spectating.

Walking is a simple, free, and versatile form of exercise with numerous health benefits. Regular walking, especially for at least 30 minutes a day, can reduce your risk for coronary heart disease. It can even boost creativity and problem-solving skills!

Walking, jogging, or running 5k in the open air can significantly improve your health and wellbeing. A parkruns survey back in 2019 found that 85% of parkrunners improved their

Page 20 The
April 2024
Woodpecker

physical health. 91% of all respondents reported a sense of personal achievement after taking part, 69% improved their mental health because of participating at parkrun, with 79% saying parkrun made them happier.

After every parkrun, you receive an email confirming your finish time and position, allowing you to track your progress.

There are no subscription fees or membership costs, all parkruns are completely free.

At Pegasus we have an active social media presence.

If you are considering joining parkrun and are a little undecided, we recommend that you check out our photos and videos online.

Visit our web site at parkrun.co.nz/ Pegasus or search for ‘Pegasus parkrun’ on Facebook.

The Council’s Long Term Plan is now out for public consultation.

The LTP is a key strategic plan that all councils are required to develop under the Local Government Act 2002.

The LTP outlines the Council’s activities and how they are managed, delivered, and funded including proposed rate increases.

plan given the difficult economic environment we are operating in, while still ensuring we continue to deliver the high level of service our residents and ratepayers expect.

Consultation opened on 15 March and closes 15 April. Consultation documents are available on the council website: waimakariri.govt.nz and available at council service centres. We will also be holding drop-in sessions across the District:

• Oxford – Town Hall A&P Room –

Recently I had the privilege of opening the new PAWS Vets in Ravenswood owned by Nick and Melanie Deane. I have followed Nick’s progress since he first opened in Woodend eight years ago. What has always impressed me about Nick is his deep care and love of our community. I am for the Deane family achieving their dream of a purpose-built vet clinic with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

This significant investment shows real confidence in our area.

I hope you all have a fantastic Easter and enjoy spending quality time with your family and friends. I also hope you have time to kick back, relax and enjoy a hot cross bun or two!

As always, I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury

Welcome to the team Meet Sharnika (Little) and Deanne (Big), and Brittany (Little) and Emily (Big) - the latest Big Brothers Big Sisters matches! Sharnika and Deanne spent their first mentoring session enjoying hot chocolate while brainstorming activities they would like to do together throughout the year. With a mutual love of animals, especially horses, we think a lot of their time will be spent in the great outdoors of North Canterbury. New mentor Emily will visit Brittany for

one hour, once a week, during the school term and the gals are keen to get stuck into some baking, and arts and crafts projects. Volunteer Applications are OPEN and we invite YOU to find out more about mentoring a child in your community. The only skill you need, is to be yourself! Woodend - Sefton Community Board

Pegasus Youth Space update

Council staff have recently started this project by asking youth what type of space they would like to see in Pegasus. They have been going along to the schools and listening to the students. The next step is a survey which is intended to happen over the school holidays , so look out for this. Once there is a better idea of ‘what’ this space might be, then consideration can be given to ‘where’ this space would best be located. At this stage there will be an opportunity for the wider community to be consulted as well.

Does your community group need funding for an event, a project , or something specific. We may be able to help - find out more at waimakariri.govt.nz/community/funding-and-grants/board-funding

The Woodend Volunte er Fire Brigade applied for funding to help light up the station, brightening the community.

Draft Long-Term Plan (LTP) 2024-2034 consultation

The Council has released the draft LTP which is what is planned over the next 1o years and how the activities and services will be funded, including by rates and fees. Public consultation of the draft long-term plan runs through to 15th April and your feedback is sought. Drop-in sessions are planned, including at Woodend Community Centre on 3rd April from 4 – 6pm if you have any questions or want further information. Full information is available at https://letstalk.waimakariri.govt.nz/ .

Our next meeting – all are welcome

Tuesday 9th April starting at 5.30pm at Waikuku Beach Hall.

Contact us – more information about the Board and our contact details are at waimakariri.govt.nz/council/council,-boards-and-committees/woodend-seftoncommunity-board

If you would like to see what will be discussed at each meeting check out the Board Facebook page or the agenda at waimakariri.govt.nz/council/meetings/minutes-andagendas/woodend-sefton-community-board around Thursday of the prior week.

Communi-tea Cuppa

On Tuesday 5 March we enjoyed a morning tea talk on the history of Woodend and Ravenswood presented by the talented Warren Stanbury. He then took us on a tour of the cemetery and told us about the history of some of our founder families. One of the facts that I found extremely interesting was that this area was originally called Ravenswood.

ANZAC SERVICE 2024

Woodend’s Anzac Service will take place on Wednesday 24 April at 6pm at the Woodend Community Centre.

The Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus extends an invitation to our local communities to attend and join in the remembrance service. Please bring along a wreath or cut flowers as there is an opportunity to participate in the wreath laying ceremony.

It certainly gave us all an insight into our growing area. I bet that John Raven would never have foreseen the growing population that this area has and still is experiencing.

Many thanks to Joes Garage Ravenswood and The Coffee Club Ravenswood. A big thanks to St Barnabas Church for the use of the hall.

GREYHOUND REHOMING CAB NORTH CANTERBURY

CAB has launched two exciting new youth-focused projects.

The new CAB website for young people contains information about many of the key issues for youth embarking on those ‘firsts’ in adult life – starting tertiary study, getting a job, going flatting, buying a car, getting ID and more.

The site is for helping young people know their rights and responsibilities, and for linking them to the CAB service when they need help from a real person. If you’re a young person, or you have a young person in your whānau, we invite you to check out the CAB Youth website at https:// youth.cab.org.nz/

The CAB youth engagement report is based on the enquiries young people

are bringing to the CAB. In the past year, the CAB throughout the motu helped around 5,000 people under the age of 25 with information, advice, and support. The report reveals the most common issues for which young people are seeking the CAB’s help and shows some of the key problems and obstacles youth are facing ‘out in the world’. Here is the link to read a copy of this very important report https:// www.cab.org.nz/what-we-do/socialjustice/cab-spotlight-reports.

Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is a community organisation helping everyone know and understand their rights and obligations, and how to use this information to get the best outcomes. At CAB we provide people with the

confidence and support they need to take action. Do get in touch. We’re here to help!

Our opening hours are 9.30am to 3.30pm, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 9am to 4.30pm Tuesday and Thursday.

You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust Update

Nau mai haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust!

It is with great sadness that we farewell Nick Chapman, who has done the utmost incredible job progressing Tūhaitara Park in many areas and facilitating the advancement to the next stages of development. The trust is looking for a new general manager who is willing to build on what Greg and Nick dedicated so much time and energy towards. If you would like to express your interest in being part of our team, you can apply your interest for the role on our website under the employment tab or type the following link into your search browser: https://www.tuhaitarapark. org.nz/apply.

Emily has expanded her role in the park’s funding sector, which includes many things, from grant proposals to securing funding and creating progress reports to help us continue our work.

While we await our new General Manager, Deane will take over as the Interim General Manager. Deane has been and continues to be an integral part of our team, possessing the skills and knowledge necessary to lead the park forward. Additionally, Deane is our go-to maintenance guy for anything within the park, from creating the biota nodes, maintaining the tracks, and fixing fences to almost anything else you can think of. Murray and Nickolai are also two essential members of our team who contribute hugely to the maintenance side of things, but both are unfortunately off on ACC at the moment. Hopefully, they will both make a speedy recovery. As we enter planting season, you will see Rex out and about planting; he is our mowing and planting superstar and the team’s longest-serving member!

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust is a charitable trust that relies solely on donations and funds at present, and without Emily doing the amazing stuff she does behind the scenes, alongside her full-time master’s studies!! Doing the Mahi around the park would be more challenging for the team. With a Bachelor of Science in biological, environmental, and geographical sciences, Emily provides a diverse and marvellous array of knowledge. When Emily and Mikaela (Role covered in March entry) have a little spare time in their new roles, they also continue to help around the park with maintenance, planting, pest control and data collection, among many other things.

Additionally, School groups are doing an incredible job contributing to the broader goals within the park; Kaiapoi North School is moving on to its 2nd node, whilst other school groups are progressing well with their first nodes! The insect hotels are going up! Spot one at the pā harakeke, another in Pegasus, designed by Pegasus Bay school students and finally, one at Pines Beach, created by Kaiapoi North School students.
