Pegasus Park Run is Back!

Saturday 4 July 2020 marked a milestone event for Pegasus parkrun: the ‘Restart parkrun’ was the first parkrun to be held post COVID-19 lockdown. New Zealand is the only country to have resumed parkrun, and we feel so extremely fortunate to be in the position to be able to continue, given all other countries are unable to do so yet.

Park Runs all over New Zealand adopted another parkrun country for the day, and our adopted country was Wales. In true Pegasus parkrun style, this meant dressing up of course – we had everything from a red Welsh dragon, to Welsh rugby players and supporters, to a daffodil! We also had our own Welshman Dai Brooks teach us all to count to three in Welsh – un, dau, tri – to kick off our run. (Cont’d on next page)

MAKING OUR COMMUNITY AS STRONG AND DURABLE AS OUR HOMES. For every stage 2 section sold from May to December this year, Ravenswood will donate $2,000 to Community Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust.

Editor’s Note

Kia ora everyone

This month I wanted encourage you to be on the lookout for local groups or clubs who may be interested in promoting themselves in The Woodpecker. This may be sharing a success or an event they are running. The Woodpecker Community Trust was established to assist community members to develop a personal sense of identity and belonging, promote a feeling of healthy community, and provide a newsletter and share information about the Waimakariri District and the Woodend, Pegasus, Tuahiwi, Ravenswood and Waikuku Communities in North Canterbury NZ. I’m sure there is lots more going on in the community that you as readers know about and we would love to share with our readers to support the community. If you know of anyone, please have them contact us as we would love to share their community information, news and successes. Can you find Woody? He’s a black Woodpecker hidden within the newsletter. Remember the first person to find him that sends in a photo of them pointing to Woody will get their photo and name printed in next month’s newsletter! Can you be the first one? PRGI – Pegasus Info Page – August 2020 UPDATE FROM PRGI PUBLIC MEETING WEDNESDAY 08 JULY:

Earlier this month the Pegasus Residents Group hosted a public meeting where the new Pegasus management company, The Templeton Group, introduced themselves to the community. Also present were representatives from ECan, Waimakariri District Council and the New Zealand Police.

A fantastic turn out from the Pegasus Community

They recognise the need to work with our District Council and ECan in order to ensure the lake’s water is compliant. This will take time and the Residents Group signalled its preparedness to assist where possible and is keen to see a timeline of resolutions needed leading to transfer of the lake’s management to WDC.

Templeton Group Representative, Chris Simpson.

Each of these groups responded to a pre-provided set of questions from the community. Main themes were based on an update on the resolution of Pegasus lake issues, the fate of commercial property, the lack of Telco’s, the need for an outdoor youth facility and other community issues. The Templeton Group advised that they purchased the town late last year and they are currently getting up to speed on the lake (and other) issues. Website: pegasusresidentsgroup.com

Page 8 The Woodpecker August 2020

ECan explained why the lake is behaving as it is and why it experiences algae bloom outbreaks, which are issues of extreme annoyance to residents and visitors. The Templeton Group advised the meeting (attended by 177 people) that they are not a commercial land and building business and currently have most of their commercial portfolio in the town for sale. They also advised they are keen to continue meeting with the PRGI committee (and residents) to update progress on issues for which they are responsible. Pegasus Residents Group President, Roger Rule, mentioned “it is great to Facebook: Pegasus Residents’ Group Inc

PRGI – Pegasus Info Page – August 2020 see the lights on the swing bridge and that the waterfall now working.” The District Council acknowledged the need for a youth space and will commence the process over the next 12 months. They will work with our local Woodend-Sefton Community Board and the Pegasus Residents Group to bring a space into reality. Mayor Dan Gordon mentioned that students from the Woodend Primary School are looking at working with WDC on a monitoring programme to help the dog poo issue by trialling the programme in Pegasus. The key message from the NZ Police representative was: • • •

If it’s an emergency (the criminal act is in progress dial: 111) If it’s a Non-emergency (the criminal act has happened dial: 105) Traffic *555.

Tūhaitara Park Update It’s been a busy month here at Tūhaitara Coastal Park with several exciting projects and events underway. We hope those that joined us for our two guided Matariki night walks enjoyed themselves and we plan to host these walks again next winter. Also, a big thank you to all the volunteers who came along to our two recent planting days. We planted approximately 700 native trees at the southern end of the park to add to the Achilles Parade entrance which brings the total number of native plants in the area to about 1,600. Special thanks to the Kaiapoi North School Envirogroup and to Amberley School for joining us on the day. Our planting day on Tiritirimoana Drive in Pegasus Town was also a great success with approximately 900 plants being added next to the walking track. Look for this area on your right as you drive, cycle or walk out to Pegasus Beach. If you would like to join us for our future volunteer planting days please email tkot.enquiries@farmside. co.nz or check the events tab on the ‘Friends of Tuhaitara Coastal Park’ Facebook page. Dates and details will be confirmed shortly for planting days in August and September, and October.

Rare Birds spotted in the Te Kohanga Wetlands in Pegasus Town We’ve been very pleased to hear reports that a range of rare and threatened birds have been spotted in the wetlands including Marsh Crake, NZ Dabchick, Crested Grebe, Australasian Bittern, kotuku and more. Thanks to those who have shared their stunning photos with us, and we hope to continue to see a diverse range of wetland bird species. Animal pest control and trapping plays a big role in protecting these species and please do your part by keeping dogs on lead and containing cats especially at night. A few important reminders for park visitors: Please remember to keep dogs on a lead on all wetland tracks and the Tutaepatu Trail between Pegasus Town and Woodend Beach. This protects wildlife and your dog; we have active animal pest traplines in these areas. Cyclists are welcome on all tracks apart from designated horse tracks. Please look for signage and track markers We are a rubbish free park so anything you bring with you should be taken

Mayor Dan Gordon Update Thankfully, we are now past the shortest day which means the gloomy parts of winter are behind us. It’s great to see events are starting again. Council is focussing on developing a Recovery Plan for our District. This week I chaired the Council’s new Economic Recovery Advisory Group. This group is made up of business and sector representatives with the purpose of getting a broad range of ideas to advise Council and help our District recover from the economic effects of the pandemic. It is important to note that recovery extends well beyond Council. While Council plays an important role, local businesses, the development sector, local social service providers, government agencies etc. will be critical by providing their own contribution to the District’s recovery. A lot of small business owners as well as locals submitted some fantastic ideas on the ‘Waimakariri: Better than Before’ draft recovery plan. We will take these ideas away and further develop them as part of the recovery plan. There is continued uncertainty as to when New Zealand will open to the world again. At a local level things are looking positive. We are receiving a lot of enquiries from developers. Real estate sales are holding up. I’m told there is an issue of supply and that properties on the market are selling quickly. Property prices are holding Page 12 The Woodpecker August 2020

up, which is encouraging. Enterprise North Canterbury’s recentlyreleased Business Opinion Survey noted that businesses have suffered a sharp and significant impact from Covid-19. However, it is believed that we are better placed to weather the impact due to a lower level of reliance on international tourism. 26% of retail businesses surveyed experienced growth as a result of Covid-19. Local spending data would show a short-term recovery that aligns with this survey. Increasingly I am hearing from retailers and customers visiting from Christchurch and further afield – they enjoy shopping and experiencing our boutique stores, cafes and restaurants as well as our walking and cycling opportunities. The number of new building consents issued is generally considered an indicator of how the local economy is performing. New dwelling consents issued between January and May are only 9% down on the same period last year. I thought that the decrease might have been a lot greater, so this is also encouraging. The next six months will be difficult, and some of the effects are likely to be masked by the government’s wage subsidy. A sustained recovery over a period over two to three years is quite possible. (Cont’d on Page 14)

The Woodpecker August 2020 Page 13

Mayor Dan Gordon Update (Cont’d from Page 12) However in talking with business owners and our community there is a real sense of optimism. My priority, and the Council’s, is ensuring we recover from this pandemic, support our community by finding the right balance that provides the stimulus to our local economy, and continue to invest in the priorities we have identified with the community. Please continue to support local businesses by shopping locally. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they might want to discuss. Email me at mayor@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437. I’m here to help.

St Barnabas Church The last of our pre-Covid-19 activities has now recommenced, with the first session of Mainly Music taking place on 22 July. It was so good to be able to re-open the church hall for all those pre-schoolers to enjoy themselves! Our Home Groups and Teenagers Groups have been fully underway for some weeks. We have been delighted to see the enthusiasm of the participants hasn’t been affected by the lockdown. Mind you, the latest Tribe Youth Group meeting apparently involved nachos, chocolate pudding and lots of games – what’s not to love? Our God is an awesome God who understands our human need for fun. Almost all of our congregation members have also returned to regular Page 16 The Woodpecker August 2020

participation in our services. There are just a few members who are still sensible isolating themselves, due to health concerns; we are continuing to keep in touch with them and look forward to seeing them again soon. We can always make room for more people though, so if you would like to join us you would be made very welcome. Our 9.30am service is the more traditional of the two, with the service at 4.30pm being a contemporary one. All age groups are warmly welcomed at both services; however, Children’s’ Groups are only run doing the 4.30pm service as this is an easier time for most families to attend. (Cont’d on Page 18)

Woodend Methodist Church The movies will recommence on Wednesday 5 August with a 2004 British drama film starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Natascha McElhone, and Miriam Margolyes. Aging spinster sisters Ursula (Judi Dench) and Janet (Maggie Smith) discover a young man (Daniel Brühl) near death on the beach by their home in a small Cornish fishing village. Taking him in, they discover that he is Andrea, a violinist from Krakow, Poland, who had been swept off an ocean liner on which he was sailing to a fresh start in America. Although Ursula feels an unfamiliar spark of infatuation for the handsome young musician, propriety suggests the attraction must remain unspoken. The movie on Wednesday 2 September will be a 1952 American musical romantic comedy film starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. It is a light-hearted depiction of Hollywood in the late 1920s, with the three stars portraying performers caught up in the transition from silent films to ‘talkies. Dance and Sing for preschool children have recommenced on a Wednesday at Rangiora Methodist Church in King Street. Please phone the office on 313 3448 for details. The Hi 10 group for children will begin again on 9 August at Rangiora Page 18 The Woodpecker August 2020

(Cont’d from page 16) There is time to socialise after both, with morning tea following the earlier service and a dinner following the later one. We hope to run a garage sale in September, hopefully unlike our previous attempt it won’t be sabotaged by the ill health of the organiser; ill health is never pleasant. Plans for a Midwinter Christmas Dinner and a Women’s Retreat are also underway. We are also planning repairs to the church and the car park in the coming months. There’s quite a lot happening. No doubt there will be plenty happening in your lives too. Take care of yourselves in all the busyness and keep warm!

WE ARE RECRUITING! Almost anybody can join a Volunteer Fire Brigade, male or female, young or old, those who want to contribute to their community. The minimum application age for a volunteer is 16 with parental/ guardian consent, or 18 and above. We are currently seeking applicants who are available during the hours of 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday and who work in the Woodend area. Make an appointment to find out about this opportunity to serve your community:

Call Lew Grant (021 131 1780) or Robbie Boyd (027 424 1876)

DO YOU KNOW WHAT WE DO? Did you know that we don’t just put out fires? Fire and Emergency New Zealand brigades also attend medical incidents. So, if you call 111 in a medical emergency, don’t be alarmed if we turn up first - we’re there to help.

Our teams are qualified and trained to provide medical assistance until the ambulance arrives. Most Fire and Emergency New Zealand brigades are co-response brigades, meaning we also respond to medical emergencies and attend incidents where people are in life threatening cardiac or respiratory arrest. You don’t have to specifically ask for us, you call 111 and the nearest available medical responder will attend you first. We do the rest.

FIRE SAFETY MESSAGE NEVER put fireplace ashes in a combustible plastic trash container because it can easily ignite. When you remove the ashes from the fireplace before they are completely cool, put the ashes and remaining hot embers in a metal bucket. Move the bucket outside the house and garage and well away from anything that is combustible. These are simple steps that can prevent unnecessary inconvenience or tragedy. It is equally important to have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually by a professional Chimney Cleaner.

Fire & Emergency NZ Operational Efficiency and Readiness The Woodend station recently received a visit from the Operational Efficiency & Readiness Audit team. The 'theme' for this audit was our Command & Control, Breathing Apparatus competency, incident ground safety, incident command and control operational readiness of our appliances. The team had to demonstrate using practical scenarios, and provide evidence of training programs and schedules to maintain competency. Although it was a serious night, we enjoyed the evening and as an end result the audit team are very impressed with our readiness to respond to emergencies in our community.

listing some ‘Vary Interesting Facts’ about some of the common phrases used for many years in the past but for this issue I would like to share with you a poem written by one of our members celebrating the Menzshed. The Tale of Pegasus Menzshed They came from far and near; they came from everywhere. Their beards were grey and grizzled, and silver was their hair. “We’re out of things to do and our wives have kicked us out” they said we are getting in the way, as well as getting stout. What can we do until our raddled bodies will not support us anymore? The garden is done, the lights all fixed and I do not want to paint the door! We wandered around just kicking our heels, on interweb sites still looking for deals until one bright spark bored out of his head said- “I know we’ll set up a Peggy Menzshed”. So, he searched far and wide to find other men that were equally bored and kicked out themselves now and again, He related his dream to have a big shed that was breezy and cold where stuff could be made, and tales could be told. He searched high and low to locate some new mates That had nothing to do but lean on their gates. It did not take long to find a few more after putting an ad in the general store. So they turned on their deaf aids and put in their dentures and set off full steam for their new adventures, after many long days, and much bald head scratching they came up with a plan that was long in the hatching. Woodend-Sefton Community Board What’s Been Happening The Board were excited to see and approve the final concept plan for the redevelopment of Owen Stalker Park in Woodend. The existing train will be made safe and a platform and carriage will be added. A basket swing and flying fox will also be installed along with an accessible merry go round. Two members of the Woodend Community Association, Doug and Andrea, presented on their proposal for a walk and cycleway to connect Woodend and Kaiapoi using Sandhill Road and a paper road. The Board were supportive of the proposal as it aligned with a similar submission they had made to the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advocating for a cycle route to help cycle commuters, particularly high school students getting to Kaiapoi. Discretionary Funding Grants Five funding grant applications were received, with three being approved:  Woodend Playcentre - $500 for first aid courses for volunteers  Pegasus Wooden Menzshed - $500 for the purchase of a standing finishing sander  Reflections Community Trust - $200 for a dog agility demonstration at the Waimakariri Light Party. Landscaping Projects The following projects from the Boards general landscaping budget ($13,327) were approved:  entrance sign welcoming people to Woodend Beach  seat by the Pegasus Wetlands  project proposed by Woodend School pupils Poppy and Ashley. Their project is a bin by a path used

by dog walkers, along with a bag dispenser. The pupils will monitor the area to see if it makes a difference in the amount of dog poo in that area. The remaining funding will be kept for other projects later in the year. Projects Underway Carpark – Tiritiri Moana Drive Work should have started on the carpark which will provide parking for people using the Tūtaepatu Trail and walking to Pegasus Beach. Thanks to the Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust for allowing the carpark to be put there. Joining Jill Creamer Trail to Woodend Great to see the new section of unsealed path joining up the existing footpath on the south end of Main North Road in Woodend around the corner to Judsons Road. This will make it easier for those using the Jill Creamer Trail and those in Judsons Road to get to and from Woodend, including the children that bike, walk or scooter to school. Meeting Details: Our next meeting is on Monday 10 August starting at 6pm at the Woodend Community Centre. All are welcome. The spiders who recently built their designer-walled houses between the hydrangea and the lilac bush, have hung new-fangled leaf-paper light-shades and have been out all morning busily connecting the power from the overhead lines.

Pegasus - Woodend Community Menzshed (Cont’d from Page 27) A beautiful shed was found down the road the rent was quite low and not much was owed, the rats were kicked out and the floors all swept, and any good stuff was certainly kept. So, the men get together two times every week to drink tea and coffee and occasionally speak. Good stuff is produced for those folks out there and our wives are all smiling without any care.
