Editor’s Note

Who Found Woody? LARS: While enjoying some light reading Lars, 9, found the Woodpecker.

We have a great opportunity available to our regular advertisers. Our front page banner premium space is available to our regular advertisers on a first come first served basis. If you want your business visible for a whole month on the front page either in hard copy, on social media or via issuu.com where our digital copies are available, then please email the Editor with your Expression of Interest. This month we are holding our Woodpecker Xmas social evening to thank our trustees, deliverers regular advertisers and community contributers.

MARIA: Maria Carshalton, 9yrs of Woodend says, “I found Woody straight away. I am the first of 5 children. Peter is the youngest. He is only 4 weeks old today.” Maria came straight after School today and extremely excited to show me where a Woody was! CHRISTIAN: Christian Cosgrove 12yrs – Pegasus.

In December last year we printed our first ever part-colour community publication. This has been a huge success. This was such an exciting time for us considering The Woodpecker started as a one-page bulletin over 40 years ago! We’ve certainly come a long way since then! This leaves me to wish all our volunteers, readers, community contributors and advertisers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Here’s to a wonderful 2021! Debs Taylor-Hayhurst The Editor - Woodpecker Page 2 The Woodpecker December 2020

MEGAN: With my aim to get all my family into The Woodpecker I’m hoping I get selected too! My children Sam and Jessica have been in print so now just me and Ed to go!

Pegasus / Woodend Community Menzshed Update Update to the funding for the new Pegasus / Woodend Community Menzshed. The Menzshed funds are being allocated and a new shed has been chosen, a shed deign has been chosen and the plans are currently going through Waimakariri Council. The hope is that we may get consent before Christmas and can give the go-ahead for the manufacture and installation to commence, anticipated occupation will be February / March; sooner would be nice but we have Christmas coming towards us so we may get some delays due to the holiday period. As you know during the past few months we have been working out of a wool barn at the back of the golf course, we have been thankful for the use of the Barn and have managed to complete a number of projects during the time we have been there but are still looking out for more so if you have a project we can do for you please let us know. When we occupy the new building, we will be able to carry out even more so please come forward if you have any ideas. Once the building is handed over to us, we will be having an open day, so you are all welcome to meet us and to see what our Menzshed looks like. It is planned to carry out an Open Project Day over the next 12 months to display a number of different activities Page 4 The Woodpecker December 2020

provided by the Menzshed and other entities located in the Pegasus / Wooden area. There are a few items for the new shed that the funding does not cover, for help to cover the cost for completing the shed we are still looking for donations and any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Some Interesting facts you may find amusing: No rest for the wicked: This phrase comes from the bible4. In Isaiah 57:21 the prophet says: “there is no peace saith my God to the wicked” Peppercorn Rent: In the Middle Ages and Tudor Times rents were sometimes paid in peppercorns because pepper was so expensive. Peppercorns were used as a form of currency. They were given as bribes or as part of a bride’s dowry Pig in a Poke: This is something bought without checking it first. A poke was a bag. If you bought a pig in a poke it might turn out the ‘pig’ was actually a puppy or a cat. This is also known as ‘Sold a Pup’ Menzshedpegasuswoodend@gmail. com

St Barnabas Firstly, an apology – Mainly Music sessions begin of course at 10am Wednesdays, not 10.30am as I wrote last month! It’s been an interrupted year, and it’s been lovely to see you and your children enjoying coming here each week. We hope you can join us at the final session for 2020 on 9 December, and for the Christmas party which follows. Special guest Father Christmas is looking forward to seeing you all there! The Tribe youth group has already finished for the year, with an End of Year barbecue on 14 November and the other young people’s groups will follow suit this month. Their energy and enthusiasm just keep growing; when asked for comments, coordinator Amy had this to say: “The youth at St Bs have had a cracker year, despite missing our beloved Easter Camp”. A smaller version called Deeper was held at Woodend Christian Camp last month; nine of our year 7-9s attended, with one of our 11-year olds reporting, “that was probably the best experience of my life so far”. Our Children’s Church groups on a Sunday evening are growing so rapidly we have gone from 3 different age groups to 5, this has been amazing as we can cater more specifically for the interests and abilities of our awesome young people. Page 6 The Woodpecker December 2020

Our teen girls group had lots of fun activities this year including lake walks, squash, an IG photo shoot and loom weaving, and we will finish the year with a Christmas cookie bake-off on 10 December. And our Teen Bible Study group has been watching the series ‘The Chosen’, we HIGHLY recommend this show for all, it’s free to view – just Google it – you won’t regret it. The groups may be winding down, but the build-up to Christmas is just beginning. The first of the Christmas services is on 13 December, start time 10.30am, when our two congregations join together for a Carol service followed by a shared lunch. That is always a special time; as is Christmas Eve, when we meet at the church at 11.15pm to share mince pies and mulled wine, before attending the Christmas Eve candlelit service. And of course, there is the 9.30am Christmas Day service, when we celebrate the joy of Christ’s birth. We would love you to join us at any – or all – of these services. Due to its proximity to Christmas, we will not be holding a 9.30am service on 27 December. Other than 13 and 27 December there will be a 9.30am service every Sunday. The last 4.32(pm) service for the year is on 20 December, 4.32pm services resume on 31 January. Here’s wishing you all the joy and peace of the Christmas season!

Mayor Dan Gordon Update Twelve months have passed since I was elected Mayor and looking back on this milestone, I can say it has been very enjoyable and gone by quickly. Every day I consider myself fortunate to serve as Mayor and work with a team of Councillors committed to you and the Waimakariri District. People are very important to me and at the centre of everything we do as a Council, and I have made it a priority to meet with anyone who has a concern or an issue they need addressing. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that they may want to discuss. Email me at mayor@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021906437. I’m here to help. It has been a busy year, divided in two by Covid. The pandemic has had a significant impact globally, nationally and locally on households and we responded quickly and worked hard with staff to reduce this year’s rates increase to 1.5% - down from the 4% initially proposed. In March next year we will be in touch to get your feedback on two significant documents which will help shape Waimakariri for the decade to come. We are currently working on the Long Term Plan (10-year budget) which will recognise that things have changed with Covid, and that we are living in a growing District. We need to keep pace with growth and not fall behind with essential infrastructure investment, while maintaining the levels of service Page 8 The Woodpecker December 2020

in our parks, roads, facilities etc that we have all come to enjoy and expect. Council is also finalising our District Plan which is the rule book for building and ongoing development in the District and sets out and enables areas for growth and development. Earlier this month and on behalf of the community we hosted the Council’s annual Community Service Awards. Along with the Deputy Mayor, I found it very interesting to interview each of the selected nominees and in writing their citations to learn how much voluntary work is done in our community by very humble people who do not seek recognition. This year I introduced a new ‘Mayors Award’ to recognise those who have given exceptional service to our District. It is the least we can do on behalf of our community to say thanks to people who go the extra mile to give service to our community. I very much enjoy getting out and around our community and summer is the perfect season for this. If you’re at an event and see me about, come and say “Hi”. Cont’d on Page 10

The Woodpecker December 2020 Page 9

Cont’d from Page 8 We are fortunate to have so many excellent events to choose from over the summer months. Thanks to all community organisations and event organisers for providing the various events for our community. I always look forward to the Christmas season and getting around our community visiting all the wonderful events. As expected, there are a number of end of year functions, Christmas parades and festivities that I encourage you to experience. We all know it has been an extraordinary year – one unlike any other any of us would ever have experienced. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, it is important that we all make time to reflect on what Christmas is about in our own individual way. For me, Christmas is about spending time with my family and enjoying seeing so many people in the community connect and share joy, but I especially enjoy Christmas carols. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

Woodend Garden Club 75th Anniversary The Woodend Garden Club proudly celebrated 75 years of gardening and fellowship in November. Members and guests enjoyed a wonderful lunch held at Rosebank Winery. Mayor Dan Gordon and Christchurch Horticultural Society President Rae King were inspiring speakers. Chris Sutherland was the MC for the day. The idea of the formation of a Garden Club first originated at a meeting of the Spring Flower Show Committee in 1945. It was decided that the scope of the Club should be much wider. A general meeting of all interested was called and advice was given by a Horticultural Society representative as to the activities of Garden Clubs. After this meeting it was decided to form a Garden Club in Woodend. Yearly subscriptions were set at 2/6 which is roughly equivalent to $9.15 today. The Minutes from the second meeting Page 12 The Woodpecker December 2020

held on 8 January 1946 stated: “After a discussion of the afternoon tea question, it was decided to adopt Mrs Stalker’s suggestion that members bring their own cup & saucer & sugar. The Committee would fund tea, milk & biscuits at a charge of 3d per member”. (3d = .92cents) War rationing made sugar both scarce and expensive. Sprays were presented to Life Members, Past Presidents & the current President. Long service was recognised for the five longest serving attending members – Shirley Wheeler 1976, Brenda Batchelor 1981, Prue Baines 1982, Pauline Boyd 1990 & Judy Stewart 1990. The two longest serving non-attending members were also acknowledged –

Members shared some interesting stories from over the years which included the enormous work the Club has achieved in the community, the displays and shows produced past work with floral displays in Christchurch Cathedral and city riverbank and their very successful entry in the Ellerslie Flower Show. The afternoon concluded with the past and current Presidents (Shirley Wheeler and Brenda Catchelor) cutting the cake. ********************** Cont’d from Page 11 SCIP Chief Executive Officer Neil Heslop says the money raised from the event will help children and adults with profound hearing loss gain independence, become active members of their community and reconnect with loved ones. “For a person with profound hearing loss life is filled with challenges. The impact on their family, education and work-life can be debilitating – some of our patients are isolated in their homes because they can’t communicate,” says Neil. “The support of local organisations like the Rangiora Lions Club helps us make cochlear implant technology available to as

Letter to The Editor

Well what a year 2020 has been! We never imagined a pandemic and the changes to our lives it would bring. The council continued to provide essential services and we all became familiar with zoom meetings. The highlights of 2020 for me have been the AA rating awarded to the council by the Local Government Excellence programme. The Waimakariri District Council is one of two councils to achieve this rating and the only one to have achieved it twice! This reflects good governance and dedicated staff. Secondly the council retained its Standard and Poors AA rating in a challenging climate. This greatly reduces the cost of council borrowing which ultimately benefits ratepayers. However, there are threats on the horizon. Central government in my view is looking to take ‘local’ out of local government. Cont’d on Page 20

This Month with Harry Firstly, to my eagle-eyed fans that proof-read my contributions: yes, the worried mother’s son was indeed 18, not 8!! With regard to the wages and hours, yes, I did grizzle and moan about it!! The bit about writing home and telling mummy about the new shirt you were given should have finished “after all we didn’t want you missing out the r in shirt.” Finally, the sentence about the do-gooder or civil rights nutter should have read “it is their right not to work or accept discipline” I have spoken severely to the typist and reduced his weekly pay from 4 bottles of laphroaig single malt to 3. Thank you to all those kind people that enquired after my health and wellbeing. Of course, over the past few months I have had two major setbacks. Losing a leg and voting National. And to cap it all off I am still a full-blown orphan. Things are progressing slowly but surely on the leg front. Or should I say on the leg stump. The stump mould is proving a bit tricky but last week saw the attachment of my new steel leg. It was about two inches too long so Leksek, the engineer, took it into the adjacent workshop and with a drop saw took the too long bit off. And I kid you not dear reader I actually felt some phantom pain while he did it!! Once levelled up and not leaning like the tower of Pisa, I managed three walks up and down the parallel bars. I even did two steps no hands but Page 18 The Woodpecker December 2020

Kate the physio told me off as I am not to that stage yet. Learning how to pull the string that puts the leg out of gear so I can sit down was lesson number two. Boy is it one big learning curve? I have had a couple of enquiries regarding the origins of street names in Woodend. Over the next few months, providing I live long enough, I’ll throw a few in. However, as a passionate supporter of the 1974 Rangiora County Council decree that the new streets in Woodend be named after the early settlers, I will make only brief comments on some of the stupid ones sanctioned recently. These brief comments will be only aimed at why they have absolutely no relevance to the history or heritage of our fair village. I see in the October issue of Community board report, they have accepted Clare’ and Jasmine’ for new streets in Ravenswood. These names were apparently ‘gifted’ by Te Ngai Tuahuriri Rununga. ‘Gifted’ by Te Ngai Tuahuriri Rununga? In order to make it easy for future historians, could I make a plea to our local board to explain in the next issue the origins and meanings of ‘Clare’ and ‘Jasmine’. If we are going to get a bit ‘twee’ with street naming and as our fair village has an increasing diversity of culture and ethnicity what about some of you getting together and ‘gifting’ some names to the local board. For instance, the Scots could promote a Glenfiddich Ave or a Burns Way. Burns Way would also honour Henry Burns who lived on Woodend Road during the 1870s and was a renowned bacon curer. Come in the Irish with Guinness Road

or Leprechaun Alley and the Indians could contribute Punjabi Place or Curry Street. The latter would also honour Constable Dick Curry, the old plod who kept not a bad garden on Woodend Road. So, come on folks do your civic duty and ‘gift’ our board a few ideas.

went through the many family photos naming them, including her 1881 school class!!

And so, to this month’s proper street name: Catchpole, after Alfred and Mary Catchpole. From old Whittington in Derbyshire they arrived on the Otaki in 1879. Alfred purchased John Ranby’s boot shop at what is now 26 Main North Road. The original dwelling still stands. Right next door on the corner of Petries and the Main Road was a general store operated by the Benjes brothers, Herman and Frederick from Hanover in Germany. By all accounts they did a great trade in home-made confectionary- Herman was described as a sugar-baker on the immigration list. When the Benjes moved to Rangiora, the two eldest Catchpole girls; Florence and Marion took over the shop specialising in sweets and cakes. As both were excellent seamstresses they also took in dressmaking and sewing.

JH

Alfred Catchpole took a very active involvement in community affairs especially the school and Methodist Church. A keen gardener he was instrumental in forming the Woodend Horticultural Society, the forerunner of the present Garden Club. The family gradually moved away from Woodend except for Florence, who married William Henry Judson and lived the rest of her life in Woodend. One of her everlasting legacies is that in the early 1950s, prompted by her granddaughter in law Dorrie Judson, she

Orders close 18 December 2020. Please contact Anne on 03 313 6124. Cont’d from Page 16 Two examples are the Three Waters Reforms where the council would lose control of this core service to a new corporate entity with no elected representatives or accountability to ratepayers ( and the compulsory chlorination of drinking water by 1 July 2021) and a likely increase in costs. The second example is overriding our District Plan by removing parking requirements. To compensate any new public parking will be paid by ratepayers not developers. The logic seems to be that by creating congestion other modes of transport will be utilised. I don’t think this model suits our scattered rural district with limited public transport. These and other changes will have a profound effect on local government viability, services provided and accountability. Cont’d on Page 29

Woodend Friendship Club Coast Trip On 5 October 47 members and friends headed off to Hokitika by bus. We stopped at the Station Cafe in Moana for lunch, which was excellent, especially considering the chef was apparently on the road heading to Greymouth when she realised, we were due in a few hours! She did well. We arrived at the Beachfront Hotel on a lovely sunny afternoon. The rooms all face the Tasman Sea, which at night appeared to lull some to sleep, some not to hear, and others to keep awake. During Happy Hour, the Sheriff (John F) managed to fine a number of members for indiscretions, blunders, missteps and mistakes. The next morning, we set off to the Treetop Walk, which was opened in December 2012. The steel structure was prefabricated in Australia in two months, was brought to Hokitika in small parts and reassembled in six weeks. 400m3 concrete was poured (apparently that is a lot) and over 13,500 bolts used. It is designed to “move with the wind and be as solid as a rimu tree” and has a 1.2 km loop track elevated 20 meters above the forest floor, and also has a tower with a circular staircase with 107 steps reaching 47 meters. We walked in mainly fine weather, then fine drizzle which turned to drenching rain while we had an early lunch at the cafe. The next stop was the Hokitika Gorge, driving past lush hump and hollowed drainage farmland. Some set off in the rain suitably attired with umbrellas/ coats down the track to the swing

bridge and river and tried to imagine the turquoise coloured river on a sunny day. Then back to Hokitika to visit the National Kiwi Centre, the outside of which belies what lies within. With the rain on the roof and multiple fish tanks you could think you were under water. There was a huge tank with giant eels (some over 80 years’ old), other tanks with crawlies, endemic and tropical fish, turtles, axolotls, frogs - all in crystal-clear water, tuatara and two kiwi (one dashing about attempting to attract the one hiding). That night the Sheriff was warming to his task, fining those who didn`t get off in the rain at the gorge, and fining those who did for coming back and wetting those who didn`t! On Wednesday we were up early for breakfast and set off for Gloriavale. We arrived at the complex to be greeted by little children waving from windows, and an impression of equal numbers of children’s bicycles and baby buggies. We were welcomed by Howard Temple, one of the leaders, who then gave a brief history of their community. It was formed in Cust in 1969 and moved to the Coast in 1991. The population is currently approximately 600, 60% under 15 years, 180 preschool, 200 school age. There are approximately 35 babies / year. This is a problem as they have a shortage of labourers, teachers, skilled tradesmen. Their main income is dairying (2,200 cows). They are currently developing another community near Lake Brunner to relieve pressure on their current site. Cont’d from Page 23 There are four accommodation complexes. Each floor has a central dining area with family rooms (bedrooms) leading off, to allow family bonding time. The meal comes from the main kitchen. We were taken to one of these areas for tea/coffee and very nice coconut biscuits. Following this we went to the main hall / dining room (where the annual concert is performed). We walked through the kitchen, staffed by pleasant young women, through various school rooms (ages preschool to secondary) where we were able to engage with the students. We were given an excellent lunch, to the accompaniment of a `sales pitch` from Howard (no such thing as a free lunch). However, it was a very informative visit and gave us lots to ponder on. We drove back through Kotuku where our driver spent his boyhood and he shared some of his reminiscences. Our last visit was to Besgrow, a sphagnum moss factory (quite an antidote to Gloriavale actually). It was really interesting. They own 4-5 swamps they can harvest moss from, plus private suppliers. The product is high end and regarded as best in the world. It is sustainable farming, and they can reharvest every 3-4 years. This involves helicopters picking up from the site (once it is bagged up) and taken to trucks, then the factory. The sodden moss is then put on trestles in tunnel houses to dry and then taken into sheds for processing and compressing into various shapes. They export mainly to Australia, also Japan, China, Korea, Singapore, America, Canada. It is very labour intensive and operates

all year. We were sent off with a small sample and notepad. An extremely interesting day, and the sun shone all the way. The Coast will be in a great position if a profitable use for gorse is found. Then all of a sudden it is over. What a great trip with great hotel, good food, good trips and especially good company.

revising the requirements necessary to make the lake compliant to ECan’s spec, and hence bloom free. Golders were the party originally engaged by Infinity Group in the development of Pegasus Lake and have remained involved to date in a monitoring function. Templeton will let us know when the report is due back for their review. Templeton have engaged the original site engineers that physically prepared the lake surround and generated its maintenance plan. Templeton have asked them to seek opportunities to enhance the environment beyond just meeting the resources consent standard. The engineers visited the lake approximately three weeks ago and are in the process of feedback to Templeton.

The Pegasus Community Vege Stall is now up and running for local residents to use! It is located beside the Pegasus Community Centre. The initiator of this project was long-term Pegasus resident, Christine Johnston. Christine met with the PCC Team Facebook: Pegasus Residents’ Group Inc

Pegasus Info Page - December 2020 a couple of months ago to talk through ideas for the stand, what the design would be, where it could be located and who will look after it. Christine then approached the Pegasus /Woodend Menzshed to build the stand and make a sign for it. The result is what you see above, and it was fixed in place by the Menzshed team under the watchful eye of Christine who was first to donate some produce. Pegasus residents are encouraged to "Take what you need and donate what you can" with fruit and vegetable produce and plants only being accepted. Christine will keep an eye on the stall to ensure donations are not left to rot and she will be assisted by the Pegasus Community Centre volunteers when they are on duty. Big thank you to Christine and the Pegasus/Woodend Menzshed team for making such a wonderful resource possible for our community.

The end of the school year is very close, and we are looking at our organisation for 2021. We are certainly in a roll growth position and will start 2021 very close to our grading roll. We expect to start the year with 14 classrooms with another classroom opening in Term 2. We thank our parent community and students for their support during 2020 in what has been an interesting and sometimes challenging year. Invitation to Community Luncheon: The community are warmly invited to attend our Years 1 - 6 Final Assembly, view some performances and join us for lunch on Tuesday 8 December. 11.30 am - School Celebration in the Community Centre 12.30pm - End of Celebration 1.00 pm - Kapahaka and Jump Jam Performances 1.30pm - Lunch Please RSVP to the Woodend School Office (for catering purposes) if you think you would be able to join us 03 312 7808 or email office@woodend. school.nz Pink Shirt Day: Our students held a Mufti Day for Pink Shirt Day recently - this was a day of encouraging our students to wear pink to spread

aroha, kindness, to celebrate diversity and put an end to bullying. They raised $348.70 towards this great initiative. Jump Jam News: This week the Woodend Dreamers got the results back for the National Jump Jam Challenge Competition and have placed first in NZ for the Year 7/8 Xtreme Category! Their routine was to ‘can’t hold us’ and was based on puppets attempting to break free from control. A massive thank you to Pip Haigh and Hannah Lumsden who coached the girls and to the Bell family for their sponsorship support after costumes din’t arrive in time! We are super proud of the team!!! MainPower Community Fund - Thanks to the community who got behind us with voting for Woodend. We were successful in gaining funding to go towards new Kapahaka uniforms. We are looking forward seeing the samples made up. Many thanks to Mainpower and to the community for all your support with the voting. We wish our community, parents and students a happy and restful holiday and look forward to seeing all back in 2021 on our start day of 3rd February. Woodend-Sefton Community Board What’s Been Happening The Board recommended option two for the extension of the Rangiora Woodend Path along School Road to the State Highway in Woodend. This uses the existing road for the path and moves the traffic lanes slightly. It allows for plantings, separated with onstreet parking bays and kerbing that acts as a buffer between the path and vehicles. This is another step in connecting up paths to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to move between our communities, particularly when the new signalised pedestrian crossing outside the school is in place. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) tells us this will be by the beginning of the next school year. Through the discretionary fund the Board granted $250 to Arts Canterbury Inc. toward hiring display panels and lighting for an art exhibition to be held from 29 November to 6 December at The Mill in Waikuku.

Speed Limit Reductions Whilst pleased that the decision on the speed limits has been released by NZTA, three concerns the Board had submitted on were not addressed. They were for the 50 km/h speed limits at either end of Woodend to be extended south and also further north past the Pegasus roundabout. Also for the speed limit over the Ashley bridge to be reduced. A joint letter with the Mayor has been sent to NZTA. The new limits take effect on 15 December.

Coming up to Christmas and after it there are often questions and we’re here to help you with those. They can include: • Can my employer force me to take annual leave between Christmas and New Year, or during that period? • My boss said to me that I have to work on Christmas Day to be a good employee. Am I obliged to work? • What happens if I can’t afford any food for my family? • What is an extended warranty, and do I need to buy one? • My Christmas gift broke and I want to return it, but the retailer is only offering to fix it. What are my rights? • My neighbour’s holiday celebrations are too loud. What can I do? • The online deal looks good, but can I trust it to be legitimate?
