Tēnā koutou Here we are at the end of the year with the end of year publication and what a bumper-size it’s ended up with SO many contributions and advertisements I ended up with a 64-pager to finish the year! What a great way to finish! This month I wanted to start with a huge thanks to all who make The Woodpecker publication a great read delivered to your house. Without YOU, volunteers, contributors, and advertisers, none of this would be possible. It’s a team effort and what a team! We ended the year with a great Xmas Thank You evening on 22 November and have included a sample of some great photos taken thanks to Jeff Taylor-Hayhurst and Colin Warren for taking some great photos of the event. We farewelled a long-standing board member, distributor and deliverer, Tyree Woodham who, over her more than 23 years has seen so many changes and growth of The Woodpecker. It was wonderful that she was presented with the most amazing bouquet of flowers to thank her for her support during this time. She will be sorely missed. It is also with thanks we acknowledge Mark Paterson, board member and deliverer in Woodend who as back-up distributor has taken over the role of distributor in Woodend along with Jeff

TaylorHayhurst in Pegasus. If anyone is interested in a board member role and being involved in this amazing charity, please do let me know. Likewise, we are always on the lookout for adult deliverers, so if you have a spare hour or two each month to deliver some Woodpeckers then please do let me know. It’s not an onerous tasks and deliverers tell us they love the role and seeing people as they deliver to people’s letter boxes. As you know we run the ‘Can you find Mr Woody Woodpecker’ each month, and this month is no different, other than we also have two Xmas Elves to find. Let’s see how well everyone reads this and the note about finding Mr Woody Woodpecker where finding the two Xmas Elves is also mentioned! That leaves me to wish you all a very healthy, happy, enjoyable time over the festive season. Here’s hoping for a great 2024. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Woodend Vet Clinic We hope everyone has Merry Festive Season and wish you all a Very Happy New Year! PLEASE KEEP YOUR PET SAFE

VACCINATIONS

Avoid heat stress: Don’t walk them in the heat of the day, or on hot pavements, and please never leave them unattended in cars, or without water on warm days.

Canine Cough (formally known as Kennel Cough) outbreaks in previous summer periods, has prompted many local dog owners to have a booster vaccination given over December and January. As a result vet clinics will have a large number of dogs falling due for their boosters again over what can be a very busy period in the veterinary calendar.

Keep them safe around waterways: Check lawa.org.nz first to make sure there is no toxic algae where they are swimming. Examine regularly for barley grass and foxtail awns which stick to fur and can pass easily through the skin. Check coats, foot pads and ears, clip fur as short as possible, brush and trim frequently.

AFTER HOURS EMERGENCIES Woodend Vet Clinic will be closed on public holidays, Christmas and New Year. If your pet has an emergency when we are closed, please call: 0800 EVH 111

EMERGENCY VET HOSPITAL

They are located at Rangiora Vet Centre, 181 Lehmans Road, Rangiora. In the event the team is tied up in a lengthy critical surgery, or they are unable to provide after hours service, when you call the number above, you may be directed to Christchurch After Hours Clinic.

If your dog or cat is boarded in a kennel or cattery while you are away on holiday, Remember it takes at least 10 days to respond fully to a vaccine, so it is important that you plan carefully for your pet’s “holiday”, and get them booked in well in advance of their kennel or cattery stay. Please keep this in mind and book your cat or dog in for their vaccination early so you don’t miss out and put them at risk!

A ‘Spooktacular’ was recently held for our Community on Halloween night, at the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade. A free BBQ treats for the Children, biscuit decorating, spooky photo corner, colouring in and a bouncy castle were some of the attractions offered by the Brigade. This is now the second year this has been held – popular last year, but more so this year with over 400 people gracing the Station. It was great to see all the costumes the Community and the Brigade Members turned up in and it was a delight to see the smiles and the joy on the Children’s faces plus our community socialising together. On 5 December, the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade will again be taking part in the ‘Toot for Tucker’. We turn out in our Brigade vehicles – of course the crowd pleaser – the Fire Engine, and two of our support vehicles along with the old Land Rover. By the time you read this, it will all be over and

hopefully, we have managed to gather food items for those who are struggling. We recently also attended the Woodend School Fair with the Fire Appliance, which prompted great interest, especially when the children were able to look around the Fire Engine and try out the hose reel and other equipment. I wanted to just let you know that as well as putting out Property and Scrub Fires, attending Medical Calls, Motor Vehicle Accidents, etc, we take the time to engage with the local Community as your Fire Fighters are part of that Community. On that note, Merry Christmas to you all and we hope your New Year is going to be a good year for you all. The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024 Page 11

Woodend Garden Club What a fabulous year we have had to date. We have enjoyed floral design workshops, specialist speakers, hosting the wonderfully historic Spring Flower Show in its 90th year, bus outings, visits to members gardens and most recently our Clubs colourful Rose Show. Not all members are gardeners – some belong to learn, watch, or simply enjoy the fun and outings. Annual Rose Show The Clubs annual Rose Show was held on 20 November in the Woodend Hall. Sections included roses, cut flowers, vegetables, decorative arrangements, baking and preserves. Invited judges score the entries and points are allocated for 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Once judging is finished, the public are welcome to view the works. As always, afternoon tea follows and a lot of chatting!

Page 12 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

The winner of the Rose Bowl for 2023 was Brenda Batchelor from Rangiora. Brenda and her husband were horticulturists in Woodend for 50 years. She is always happy to share her knowledge and donate plants from her lovely garden. The Rose Bowl trophy has been won every year since 1947. Some very historic Woodend names feature on that trophy. Xmas Meeting We will be having a shared Xmas Lunch for the December meeting on 11 December. There will be great prizes for best Xmas dress and special Christmas raffles. January Meeting In January we will take a bus trip to Weka Pass and visit some gardens in the Hurunui. Should you be interested in joining or visiting us you are very welcome. Looking back on half a century in Woodend

Prior to 1973, my wife Vivienne and I, had lived in Shirley, Christchurch where we had built a house on a half-acre back section. In the preceding years we had become interested in a little-known breed of dog and had registered a kennel name so that we could breed them as a hobby. The Schipperke breed has a reputation for being good watch dogs and demonstrated that feature by barking loudly to warn us of approaching visitors at any time of the day (or night). Anticipating that our growing family of dogs could become an annoyance to neighbours in an urban situation, we decided to move out of Christchurch to rural location, before anyone had complained.

Having checked out suitable properties to the south, west and north of Christchurch we finally purchased a seven-acre block on the outskirts of Woodend on the road to Rangiora. It was ideal because we had no close neighbours and plenty of room to exercise the dogs without leaving the property. We settled in the residence and have lived here ever since; we still have the same kind of dog and gained the reputation as breed conservators. As part of our ‘due diligence’ when looking at purchasing the property we visited the then Rangiora District Council to check on their long-term future plans for Woodend. It was interesting to inspect the book and Cont’d on Page 36 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024 Page 13

Rowing for life is an event born from a conversation between Ian Hamilton of Invercargill and Colin McDonald of Tois Tois Tokonui Lions club at Easter 2020, one Sunday afternoon. The outcome of the discussion was that Ian wanted to row the east coast of New Zealand, to raise funds for Child Cancer Foundation, as he had a relation with a child going through cancer treatment and starship naturally become part of this as well. Surf Lifesaving, because of his interest and their support during other rowing events, Lions Skin Cancer Screening Trust because this is Lions NZ project to have two vehicles to arrive in small town NZ to screen anyone for Melanomas at no cost. Colin suggested that Lions NZ raise a lot of funds for these organizations. Why not partner with the Lions to achieve a good result. Ian and friends have previously rowed Cook and Foveaux strait for previous fundraising events. The proposal is to raise funds throughout all New Zealand and divide the funds between the charities. Since the conversation took place Ian has been contacting rowers of all levels from amateur to Olympian level. This has met with much Page 14 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

enthusiasm and support from many sectors of the rowing community. We are looking for sponsorship to help us achieve this goal. Any form would be appreciated. The event is being promoted NZ wide and on social media, Television and, in some areas, internationally. If you choose to become a sponsor your name will be associated on the Rowing for life website and at opportunity. To promote the row and raise funds for the five charities. To have fun with events promote Lions, through interclub activities and partnerships with other organizations. Lions Clubs NZ Cancer Skin Screening Our mission is to ensure all New Zealanders have access to early melanoma detection services at no cost to them. The screening service will be a full body screening for skin cancer by trained health professionals. This is offered in a customized mobile vehicle. It is proposed that, initially, two vehicles be provided: one in the North Island and one in the South Island. A mobile service will guarantee equitable access to skin cancer screening service for all New Zealanders. While this idea is novel to New Zealand, it has already been successfully deployed by the Lions Clubs of Australia in Western Australia, which established its first screening unit in August 1994. NZ has a very high skin cancer rate ‘The silent killer’ has no age barriers. Please help us help reduce the effects of this cancer. Child Cancer Foundation NZ Child Cancer Foundation is a New Zealand charity that provides support to children and families on their cancer

journey. We support them every step of the way, helping them overcome challenges and maintain control of their lives. We focus on the whānau, not the cancer. No two families’ experiences are the same, and neither is the nature of the support they need. One thing is always the same: we support every family so they can concentrate on the most important thing of all, loving and caring for their child. https://childcancer.org.nz/ Surf Lifesaving NZ Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is the leading beach and coastal safety, drowning prevention and rescue authority in Aotearoa. We are truly unique, delivering proactive lifeguarding and essential emergency rescue services, a range of public education beach safety programs, member education, training and development, as well as a highly respected sport. surflifesaving.org.nz Starship Childrens’ Hospital We are the leading provider of paediatric health care in New Zealand and the South Pacific, delivering family centred care to infants, children, young people and their whānau in hospital and in the community. Starship Children’s Health provides a wide range of complex medical, surgical, cardiac and mental health services for children and young people throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific. Starship is a major teaching center. It aims to lead the nation in pediatric training and research. Services are provided in inpatient, outpatient, day stay and community settings. starship.org.nz The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024 Page 15

Your Perky Pegasus Pantomime!

A Christmas preview with a pointer or two. Ahhh…Christmas is here so be of good cheer, We’re back to that old helter-skelter! You’ll have a good feed, drink more than you need And sleep it all off while you swelter. Before you can yawn you’re dragged up at dawn To get gifts that usually don’t matter; You’ll force open your ‘lids cos it’s all for the kids And you know you adore whoops and chatter! We can’t deck those halls cos we aint got the holly (With the high cost of living ’tis hard to be jolly.) We’d love to go dashing but snow’s far away And petrol’s so dear that we can’t fill the sleigh! We’d like that White Christmas, but it’s still a pipe dream, So…we’ll tell a joke, sip some Coke and share a soft ice-cream. Still Christmas means toys for good girls and boys (And sometimes the naughty ones too!) But heavens above ‘tis the season of love, When good souls unite and fight the good fight, And the fiercest will “bury the glove”. There’s much to be said for snuggling in bed, Knowing Santa’s en route high above. And all around the catchment folks are getting in the jive, While those who’ve slept the whole year through are suddenly alive. Page 16 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

In Pegasus, Samantha’s lights gleam in weary eyes And down at number 102 the trees and deer surprise. Rememb’ring these winsome folk present this year on year, It sure behoves the rest of us to raise a festive cheer! Matt Doocey had a win, twas well deserved and that’s a fact! Dan Gordon’s greeting Christmas with his waters still intact, Though now he’s right determined to prevent rates getting huge, Uncertain if he’s Santa Claus or Ebeneza Scrooge. And at the office party where the drinks and bon-mots flow, When everyone is merry and every face aglow, When the bashful find their forte and the boss puts on a show, For goodness sake be careful where you stick that mistletoe! And since the days are lengthening and nights are growing shorter, Tis time to wrap a hug around your husband, mum and daughter; And if you find your body for another toddy yearning, Think: most of us are healthy and most of us are earning. Still down in your cups and think the world sucks And feel that your blessings are few? Remember the birth that’ll rescue this Earth, And rumble a carol or two. Next count up your coins and gird up your loins, Push those ghosts of the past out of view; Hang up your stocking and get your

sleigh rocking And remember the year ahead’s new!

Merry Christmas - Bob Nimmo

Youth Space – Pegasus

Over the summer Council will be asking youth about what type of space they would like to see in Pegasus. This project has been on hold for a while, but it is now time for the youth to tell us what they would like to see. Once we have a better of idea of ‘what’ this space might be, then we will be able to consider ‘where’ this space would best be located. This will include an opportunity for the wider community to be consulted as well.

2024 – so far the year ahead in this area will include:

 Accessible viewing platforms at Pegasus and Waikuku Beaches  Woodend Beach playground and toilets planning finalised  Pegasus Community Centre – getting this underway  New Woodend Town Centre toilets in School Road  Youth space – Pegasus  Continuing to advocate to ensure funding for the Woodend Bypass and safety improvements for people crossing at SH1/Pegasus/Ravenswood roundabout  Reviewing the Woodend Pegasus Area Strategy  Welcome signs at Woodend and Woodend Beach finalised and in place

Our office will close for the Christmas / New Year break on Wednesday, 20 December at 3.30pm and reopen on Monday, 8 January 2024 at 9.30am. We’re all connected That’s why the CAB service is so important. We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. We provide the warmth and welcome of a place where anyone can come to talk about, and get help with, any issue. The CAB service includes in-depth interviewing of a client to identify what is happening for them or what information they seek, and to find out what they’ve done so far. The trained volunteer researches options specific to each client’s situation, and then explains these to the client in a way that helps them understand and work out what they want to do next. Our bureau has an extensive, reliable, and accurate database of local and national

information at our fingertips, along with pamphlets and booklets. Our website has lots of questions and answers and is easy to navigate. Why not try it? www. cab.org.nz Get in touch We know that cost is a big barrier for people accessing the services they need. That’s why it’s important to us that our service is free and freely available. Do get in touch with us. We’re trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help. Our opening hours are 9.30am to 3.30pm, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 9am to 4.30pm Tuesday and Thursday. Merry Christmas, Meri Kirihimete! I wish you all a safe and happy festive season! It has been quite a year, and I know that the challenges, especially from the rising cost of living, can feel particularly difficult during this time. I encourage you to embrace the spirit of Christmas by enjoying the precious moments you share with your friends and loved ones. Amid the hustle and bustle, remember to take a step back and be kind to yourself. We all deserve a little extra care and compassion, especially during the holiday season. When it comes to Christmas shopping and functions, consider supporting local businesses. Your choice to buy locally helps make the Waimakariri District thrive. Thank you to our emergency services, medical teams and all those working and keeping us safe over this holiday period. On behalf of the Council, we wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy and relaxing New Year holiday period.

Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year! We have had another challenging year! In particular uncertainty over the water, local government and RMA reforms. Whilst rate increases are not sustainable in the long term, community facilities, roads and drainage are critical for a growing district. I remain opposed to centralisation and support local control of local assets. I will continue to work to protect your rights and to ensure a local voice. Philip Redmond QSM Waimakariri District Councillor Kaiapoi Woodend Ward

Another year end is approaching, and we are planning for our third Christmas BBQ since setting up the Shed. Starting from nothing in 2021 and residing in two temporary sheds we have achieved a lot. To date we have invested over $100,000 in buildings and equipment generously funded by grants, donations, and the hard work of the guys. We are currently looking at an expansion programme by either extending the existing building or adding a new one. Our current membership has grown to around 30 and we are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings 9.30am to 1.00pm. If you wish you can come and have a look around, there Page 24 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

is always a cuppa at 11.00am. We are situated at the back of Gladstone Park Woodend by the main entrance, on the right as you enter the car park. Our membership is a mixed bag of senior men, with some coming along once a week and others every session, we cater for all levels of interest and skills. Down at the Shed we work on a range of projects which fall into three main categories. First and foremost, we prioritise community work, for which we usually charge for materials and a minimal labour charge. Our second

priority is work for the shed, which mainly comprises of additions and alterations, maintenance, or fundraising projects. We do various repairs, refurbishments, and numerous other projects for local people. Our members also make various smaller items for stock to be sold as the opportunity arises, usually at a stall once or twice a year, and finally there are always various personal projects going on. While most of our capabilities are for woodwork, we also have a small engineering section that caters for the members with metal working skills. Examples of our work include building bookshelves, cabinetry, furniture rebuilds and repairs, dog kennels, shed assemblies, wood turning, planters of various shapes and sizes, outdoor furniture, coffee tables, garden boxes, wooden games, and so the list goes

on. The highlight for this year was the table we built using an old monsoon bucket supplied by the Waikuku Fire Brigade, they required a show case bar leaner. While we are not on the same skill level as ‘The Repair Shop’ we do have quite a range of skills on hand, unfortunately no clockmakers or computer gurus. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the organisations who have donated funds in 2023 to help us purchase equipment, they include: Ray White, Pegasus, Mainpower, Christchurch Casino, and the Woodend Sefton Community Board. In addition, COGS (Lotto) have helped us pay our hefty insurance bill for the third year running. Merry Christmas from the Menzshed

Tūhaitara Trust Update

Nau mae haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust! There have been many smiley faces around Tūtaepatu Lagoon as the Grade 2 Waimakariri Cycle Trail passes halfway through completion. If you haven’t yet checked it out, now is an excellent time to come down and experience the smooth ride while enjoying all the spring growth and life within the park. Huria Mahinga Kai Heritage Reserve is also a hotspot; with the recent maintenance work and planting, this area is also gorgeous to check out and bring a picnic! Photo 1 (right centre): Huria Mahinga Kai Heritage Reserve Bank stabilisation planting. We also have positive news all around when it comes to life within the park; the efforts that the community and the rangers have made throughout the park to date have been beneficial to many of our native species. The birdlife is booming following the return of many birds after last year’s fire, with korimako feeding on the Page 30 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

nectar, the beautiful blue of numerous kōtare, young pīwakawaka taking flight, and the visits received from tūī. Showcasing the positive impact of regeneration and pest control efforts and dedication of the community and rangers. The mudfish population in the pīwakawaka node proved large and healthy, with 44 kōwaro in one gee minnow trap! We decided now was a good time to begin planning the translocation of some individuals into the home schoolers’ node to help increase their habitat as it has very similar water chemistry to the pīwakawaka node. Photo 2 (bottom): Pīwakawaka captured by one of our rangers, Mikaela W. Additionally, we have had a fantastic bunch of students from the University of Canterbury who partnered with us from August to September to discover more about our ground-dwelling invertebrate populations within the park via the use of pitfall traps, which allowed the live release of individuals after being counted. Tūhaitara Coastal Park has areas of pine forest, regenerating natives, newly planted natives, grassland, sand dunes, and wetlands, each home to various

species. Invertebrates are an essential part of the food chain, so their diversity is also a measure of the health of ecosystems. More invertebrates mean healthier systems, so planting is vital to support a growing community. The students found that invertebrate species are more diverse among native vegetation than in pine forests. Predatory spiders were the most abundant invertebrates in the pine forest and grassy clearings. Millipedes were the most caught species overall and found in most areas. Photo 3 (above): A selection of ground-dwelling invertebrates found within Tūhaitara Coastal Park. Clockwise from top left: Ground Beetle (Tribe Harpalini); Common millipede (Family Julidae) and mite (Order Mesostigmata); Wētā (Pleioplectron simplex); Land hopper (Order Amphipoda) and Sheet web / Dwarf spider (Family Linyphiidae); Harvestman (Genus Aglidia); Rove Beetle (Tribe Xantholinini). The photographs are of different scales. The students have recommended that we continue to increase levels of

native vegetation, including corridors of low, bushy native vegetation between our biota nodes to support a healthier ecosystem. This recommendation aligns perfectly with our Biota Node project. We are still welcoming whanau, community, business, or school groups to put their names forward to adopt and nurture a biota node to support the birds, bugs, fish, and flora within them. Woodend Indoor Bowling Club

It seems like yesterday that I was letting everyone know that Indoor Bowling was about to start a new season and now we have bowled our way through the year and have come to an end. We finished with our AGM and a fun night of ‘try and land your bowl on the $10 dollar note’, and a couple of us were successful. We re-elected a committee with Andrew Petrie remaining as our president and added a couple of new members to the committee as seasoned ones stood down. Like our long-standing Club and Match captain Rex Macauley, who we honoured with a life membership as he handed the reins over to a new match committee for the next season of Peter, Kelvin, and Linda. We also gave out the silver wear to those taking part in this year’s in-house competition; the following players were rewarded. We started with a little teaser, the ‘Tony Watson Pairs’ taken out by Geoff Adams and Jenny Gernhoefer. Page 34 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

Our champion 4s team were Craig Galilee, Owen Taylor, Bob Godfrey, and Jenny Gernhoefer. The Triples team was Ross Heasley, Jenny Gernhoefer and Peter Scholes. The pairs team were Peter McClatchy and Jenny Gernhoefer. Our single champions: Ladies was Helen Power and Men’s Barry Devine. Barry also took out the Champions of Champions singles title. Well done Mr. Devine. The most improved player of the season was Graham Young and Neville Wyatt was our aggregate winner. We have rounded off the season with an end of year dinner at the lovely Rossburn Function Venue. Where the museum and meal were enjoyed by all. The last of our ‘get togethers’ will be on 4 December for our traditional Christmas bowls. Members are reminded to dress in a Christmas theme and bring a wrapped present and a plate for supper. If you have any questions about the club and how to join us for next year’s season starting with our ‘have a go night’ in February, you next year you

can contact Linda on Ph: 027 906 7300 and she will endeavour to answer your questions. Photo: Trying for $10

Cont’d from Page 13 see plans for the extension of the motorway north from Pineacres, by-passing Woodend to the east, and joining up with SH1 at Saltwater Creek. Now 50 years have passed and still no Woodend bypass despite many revised plans over the years. During our first few years of living in Woodend there was no difficulty in joining the main road opposite the former hotel at the southern fringe of the township. It is a very different experience these days and at Page 36 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

peak periods a wait at the ‘Stop’ sign of several minutes is needed before a suitable gap in traffic allows one to take the risk and turn south. There used to be two petrol stations opposite each other in the middle of the township, and beside one of them was the old fire station which is now Paws Vet Clinic. Woodend has evolved and grown as houses were built to extend the urban boundaries on all sides; it was gradual at first, but soon speeded up, driven by demand. The most recent large leap to the west was the rezoning of land adjacent to Chinnerys Road, from rural to residential, for the massive Ravenswood subdivision. Woodend is a lovely township, a thriving community, close enough to conveniently commute to Christchurch but far enough from the city to escape the hubbub. When the Woodpecker was first produced more than two and a half decades ago, it was a single page, black and white, newssheet. But today, we can thank The Woodpecker Community Trust and our efficient editor, for a professionally produced colour printed news booklet that keeps our community informed and connected. It is a publication of which we can all be proud, and it deserves our support. Bernard Fears

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

Kay and Collette are the Peer Leaders of the Pegasus Steady As You Go group. This group meet every Thursday at 1.30pm in the Pegasus Community Centre. Kay and Collette have been leading this group for nearly 5 years now which is an amazing achievement. Kay and Collette both have a great sense of fun which comes across in the way they lead the group. They support each other with the Peer Leader role, attending refresher courses and volunteer meetings, making sure that they are up to date with any new information to pass on to their class members. Kay and Collette’s expert guidance makes sure that the group runs smoothly each week and when there is space, in their very popular class, they make any new member feel welcome. They make the class a fun and sociable time with their ongoing enthusiasm. Thank you Kay and Collette for your wonderful leadership. ‘The most important things in life are the connections you make with others’

Welcome to the December edition of our newsletter. With the ending of this year, it brings us thoughts of the new beginnings and possibilities that 2024 holds for our wonderful town of Woodend. This year has been full of small steps and completed tasks from the WDA, together with the community support given by so many others, helping make this the most wonderful place to live. Here are a few progress updates from the last month. • Woodend toilet upgrade $395,000 has been funded by ‘Keep New Zealand Green’ to update the public toilet block in Woodend (outside the bowling club). This is hoped to be completed by June next year. • Community Garden The garden has had another 2 planter boxes built and donated by Pegasus / Woodend Menzshed. Students from the school are getting actively involved with planting, harvesting and upkeep within the garden. • Renovated Woodend beach playground / toilets – going ahead It is the intention that the new site for the Woodend Beach Playground will be on the opposite (north) side of the car park. This is due to regular flooding in its current location. The new toilet block will remain on the same site, however the current mound they are on will be lowered. Both plans are to be presented to the WDC for approval in March of 2024. • Woodend-Kaiapoi Cycle way update

We have received information that the funding for the cycleway may be delayed due to the new government. We are going to investigate this information. Building of the cycleways is supposed to start in early 2024 with a completion date of June 2024. • Woodend Cleanup Another cleanup day was completed on 4 November. Thanks to all who turned up to help. The team collected 90kg of general rubbish from various parts of Woodend. • Food Pantry A reminder that we still have a food pantry in Woodend. It is situated in the WASP car park just before the school on the main road. So if you have spare produce from your own garden, you may wish to donate it to our local community by putting it into the pantry. Or, if you are in need of something, have a look from time to time. The pantry is designed for things like fruit and veg, baked goods and tinned goods, so please no frozen, dairy, or past best before dated goods thanks. Our Next Meeting Our next official committee meeting will be on 5 February 2024 at 6:30pm at the Woodend Community Centre. All are welcome to attend any WCA meeting. We will be having our annual end of year celebration at the Woodend Tavern at 6:30pm on 7 December. All are welcome – members or not. Merry Christmas everyone, from the Woodend Community Association

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust welcomes new General Manager – Nick Chapman

I am delighted to be part of the Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust as its new General Manager. I was formally the Chief of Operations for Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre and was responsible for the operational management of the facility and programmes. I have worked in outdoor education programmes in New Zealand and Australia, and have experience working with youth and disabled people as well as funding for programmes. Which lends itself well to establishing new initiatives for the trust. I have also worked in food production systems, where I am solutions focused on sustainable urban community sourced agriculture through my small business Aquaponics New Zealand. My journey spans from direct instruction, programme development, and hands-on supervision to strategic planning, financial responsibility, and change management. I have a passion for continual process improvement and love to find better, more efficient ways to ensure the successful execution of goals. I have an unwavering commitment to the community. I am here to collaborate, listen, and work with everyone to make our park even more spectacular and I am looking Page 44 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

forward to taking the Trust into the next phase of implementing our 200year management plan and creating a shared vision for the future. Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust is a registered charity responsible for the rehabilitation and management of Tūhaitara Coastal Park. They acknowledge the co-governance nature of the Trust which is run by six trustees, three appointed by Te Runanga o Ngāi Tahu and three by Waimakariri District Council. The Trust employs a fulltime General Manager, and ranger staff. The Park was established as an outcome of the settlement between Te Runanga o Ngāi Tahu and the Crown with the lands being gifted to the people of New Zealand. Tūhaitara Coastal Park covers approximately 700ha of land along the coastline from the Waimakariri River mouth to the settlement of Waikuku Beach.

Dear Community Readers It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of the school year. We are so proud of all our students and the achievements they have made throughout the year. We will be farewelling our Year 8s with the bellringing ceremony on the last day of term as they look forward to another exciting chapter in their learning. Some of our recent activities have been our: Te Hapua production Our younger students were

involved with this production of Dr Seuss. This was well attended by parents and family members. Our thanks to Jo Bartlett and her team for their sterling work. The students were amazing with their singing and dance routines. Lego League Starting in June, the Lego League team put weeks of after school time in refining code, their robot design, whilst simultaneously carrying out a research Page 50 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

project. At the Lego League regional tournament in November, the team made us proud, taking home the trophy and award for Best Robot Design. Jump Jam Our two Jump Jam teams, Woodend Sweet N Salty (student team) and the Woodend Cake Haters (parent team) competed at

Cashmere High in the Nation Jump Jam Challenge. Both teams placed 2nd overall in the South Island. Well done to both teams! We finish the school year on 14 December and the 2024 school

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

I have had a great time over the past month attending some wonderful events in our District, catching up with old friends and meeting some great new people. I do love the vibrancy of this time of year. I had the pleasure of attending the recent Mini 40 Regatta on Lake Pegasus. The event was hosted by the Pegasus Radio Sailing Club. There were 11 boats (28 hulls) taking part in the event and I must say it was a great sport for spectators. This was was my first time attending a Regatta with the mini boats. The racing was done in a similar concept to that of SailGP. The intricate design and technology of the boats was very impressive, and I was amazed by the amount of skill required to sail them. I was chatting with spectators and competitors on the day and they were all impressed with the fantastic venue Lake Pegasus provides for events such as this. I would also like to congratulate all the volunteers involved from Pegasus Radio Sailing Club. It was an excellent four days of sailing and easy to see why it is such a popular event with those in the sport. Well done. Council staff are currently reviewing the Northern Pegasus Bay Bylaw and soon they will be engaging with the community on some of the key themes of the bylaw, including why it’s important and what we can all do to ensure we preserve and respect this wonderful part of the Waimakariri District. Page 52 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

Keep an eye out for posters near the beach over the summer explaining how you can have your say. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the fantastic team from the Woodpecker for allowing me to be a part of this great publication every month. We are incredibly lucky to have such a quality magazine covering news and events in Woodend, Pegasus, Tuahiwi, Ravenswood, Waikuku and our beach communities. It is so important to have a publication like this to reflect and report on all that is happening in this area. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and happy holidays and I look forward to catching up with you all again in the New Year.

It’s that time of year where time seems to speed up, and there never seems to be enough time to get everything done. Having a routine is important, and having a free, regular, walking, jogging, and running event on our doorsteps certainly helps to keep everyone moving. Recently Pegasus parkrun has been averaging well over 100 participants each week, our growing community here in the Waimakariri district is certainly dedicated to their health and wellbeing! parkrun is for everyone, and it’s a known fact that parkrun is good for your physical, emotional, and mental health. Although run is in the name, the concept of parkrun was founded on the fact that the joy of movement should be accessible to everyone. Each Saturday morning you get a free recharge of your mind, body, and soul with volts of support, motivation, belonging, achievements, friendships and fun. It is a community of diverse people who enjoy and benefit from the positive, welcoming, and inclusive Page 56 The Woodpecker December 2023 - January 2024

environment where no one finishes last. There is no time limit and participants can run, jog, or walk. The average finish time for the 5k event is 31:33. Its popular too. At the time of writing, we have had 5,005 people crossing the finish line at Pegasus. They covered a whopping 25,000kms around Lake Pegasus. Mahi tika ana! There are now 43 parkruns in NZ, and they all happen at the same time on Saturday morning, meaning that if you happening to be elsewhere in Aotearoa, chances are there is a parkrun event close by. Globally, nine million people have signed up to parkrun since started in London in 2004. That’s impressive! You don’t have to walk, run, or walk either. parkrun is powered by volunteers; you can get involved by volunteering. Nobody gets paid to ‘run’ parkrun events, we all volunteer our time to support our community. There is a volunteer role to suit everyone so let us know if you might want to volunteer an hour down at the lake on Saturday mornings to help. Each year Pegasus parkrun supports a local charity – this year we will be encouraging parkrunners to collect dry goods for the Community Wellbeing

North Canterbury Trust. Do keep an eye out on for our posts on Facebook if you might like to contribute. Pegasus parkrun will be on Compass FM on Friday, 15 December, so do listen out for our interview. If you want to find out more about parkrun, then check out ‘Pegasus parkrun’ on Facebook / Insta or look at parkun.co.nz/pegasus. Signing up is totally free, and you are under no obligations whatsoever. Season’s Greetings to all our local supporters, and we wish you safe walking, jogging, and running around our beautiful area!

Woodend Spring Flower Show

The annual Woodend Spring Flower Show was held on 30 September. It was opened by our Mayor, Dan Gordon who cut the cake and judged the children’s decorated scooter competition. The first Woodend Flower Show was in 1932 so to celebrate its 90th anniversary, a 1930s theme was chosen. Committee members dressed in 1930s attire and the competitions had a 1930s flavour, including High Tea floral art, pressed flower bookmarks, darned socks, and knitted baby bonnets in the handcrafts section. A display of 1930s memorabilia was on show. There were a higher number of entries this year, especially in the Children’s section and Novice Floral Art. As always, the daffodil growers put on a wonderful display of a large variety of blooms. Members of the American Daffodil Society were guests at the show. The committee would like to thank members of the Woodend Garden Club and Woodend Pegasus Lions Club for their help running another successful show. and support of market stall holders was also appreciated. Afternoon Tea An afternoon tea was organised by Val Cotton was held at the Woodend Methodist Church on 30 October to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the show. Val and her family have been involved with the flower show for many years. Current president Shirley Wheeler welcomed and acknowledged the work of past and present members of the Spring Flower Show Committees and those associated with the show. Entertainment was provided by pianist and a soloist ringing hand bells. Past committee members shared memories and stories of their involvement with the show. An array of historic items including newspaper articles were on display. David Adams, a prominent daffodil grower and exhibitor and a long-time committee member and Shirley cut the cake before afternoon tea was served.
