Pegasus CCTV Project

The Pegasus Residents Group Inc. (PRGI) has been working with North Canterbury Neighbourhood Support (NCNS), Police and Waimakariri District Council, on the Pegasus CCTV project, a crime prevention and investigative tool for safer communities. Planned in three phases, the initiative requires community fundraising and the PRGI has just announced the commencement of Phase 1, made possible by a generous $5,000 donation from local business

owners Simran and Raj Sandhu of Super Liquor Pegasus. PRGI President, Matt James, said, “We were blown away to get the call from Simran. The budget for Phase 1 is approximately $10,000-12,000 and will see cameras in three key locations. This donation means we can get the first location underway and installed in March.” NCNS is overseeing donation collections - visit www. pegassusresidentsgroup. com for details. Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou A very Happy New Year to you all! Probably a little late to say this given it’s 1 February! I’m sure by now everyone is back into their normal routines by now, and Christmas and New Years seems but a distant memory. As you know the last publication lasts for two months and so a month’s break for the Editor over the summer which always seems to go really fast! This month I wanted to remind readers that The Woodpecker Community Trust is a charity and has a very small board all of whom volunteer their time; this includes the Treasurer who is responsible for sending out our invoices each month. If you are interested in being involved in a small charity and are interested in widening your skills as a board member and have some time to help with a community service, please do let me know, I’d love to hear from you. The other part of our volunteer team is our amazing team of volunteers two of which are our distributors, one based in Pegasus and one in Woodend as well as our committed and tireless team of deliverers who every month despite the heat, wind, rain or cold deliver the Woodpecker to your letter boxes. If you have an hour every month to spare and would like to help out please do let me know. We’d love to add you to our team, even if it’s as a standby in

case of illness or holiday. This month we’ve had some new community groups promote themselves and / or their events which is great to see. If you know of a group, club or service which doesn’t have a mention in The Woodpecker then please encourage them to promote what they do. Subsequently, if you are a small (or large) business and would like to promote your business at a reasonable price with a great reach of 4,000 physical copies and triple that on social media, please email me at the address below. Remember, you can’t sell a secret! The Woodpecker has a balance of 50% community and 50% advertising; this is to ensure the printing costs are covered via advertising revenue, and of course it also makes for a more enjoyable read too! Have a wonderful month and let’s enjoy the rest of our summer. The Woodpecker – ‘produced by the community for the community’ Ngā mihi nui Debs Taylor-Hayhurst The Editor – Woodpecker debs.thewoodpecker@outlook.co.nz

group of us meet on a Monday. The exercise, the social connection and the fun is paramount to the success of this mainly retired group. We’ve been pedalling for five years now and with the development of so many cycleways and bike paths, the destinations both local and further afield are unlimited. We might be found heading down the Passchendaele on our way to coffee at Mitre 10 and we could also be spotted at Clearwater Golf Club, sitting outside their café, overlooking the 18th, or maybe that’s us you’ve seen on the Causeway, on the new Coastal pathway

biking through to Sumner. The new shared pathway is now 4m wide, a great upgrade and safe way to cycle to Sumner. We often drive / park in Cambridge Terrace and head either to Cashmere, the Halswell Quarry or out to New Brighton. With the improvements made recently, to the Tuhaitara Coastal Park trail, it is now an easy excursion to Kaiapoi and out to Silverstream. Our thanks to the Park Rangers for the great upgrade, we do appreciate the change. For anyone wanting to join us, there are brochures (with contact details), down at the Pegasus Community Centre, or just turn up 9am Wednesdays - outside Flat White Café. You’ll see all the ebikes parked, ready and waiting. Photo caption: Amberley / Leithfield ride

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

As most of you know parts of our District were devastated by fires recently. In particular the people of Loburn, some of whom lost their homes or suffered significant damage to property. My heart goes out to these people many of which I met with on the day and following the fire. Recovering from something this tragic will take time, support, and resources. Since the event, community members have been rallying together and there’s a real desire to pitch in and help. We have opened the Mayoral Relief Fund to raise funds for people affected by the fires. It has been wonderful to see donations coming in from caring people all over the District. Donations can be made via internet banking to account number 01-0877-0129222-00. Please include the words ‘Loburn Fire’ in your reference details. I’d like to thank the hundreds of staff and volunteer firefighters as well as the helicopter pilots who battled the blazes in Loburn and Swannanoa. Many worked long shifts over days, evenings and overnight to keep the fires contained and under control. These fires are a strong reminder that every household in a rural area should have an evacuation plan in case of wildfire, because in the current conditions, fires move quickly and are very challenging to put out. Here is an excellent resource from Fire and Emergency New Zealand to help Page 12 The Woodpecker February 2024

you start getting ready for a wildfire: https://www.fireandemergency.nz/.../ when-wildfire-threatens/ At council things are already in full swing with staff busy putting together budgets and projects for the LongTerm Plan. When Council meets again at the end of January we will look through and

discuss all the proposals and priorities before the plan is finalised and goes out to you all for feedback. Like many Councils around the country we are going to be faced with inevitable rates increases this year. We will be focused only on the essential projects and will do our best to keep increases as low as possible. All sectors in New Zealand have been impacted by inflationary pressures and cost increases and Council is no exception. We have the first full Council meeting of 2024 on 7 February and I’m looking forward to the year ahead. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt or phone 021 906 437. I’m here to help.

Pegasus parkrun You might have seen several walkers, joggers and runners around Lake Pegasus early on a Saturday morning. Thats us doing our thing! parkrun is a global charity that organises free, weekly, 5k community events in parks and outdoor spaces. There are over 2,000 parkrun’s in 20 countries, and they are all free. We have four parkruns in Canterbury (Hagley Park, Rolleston, Broad Park and Pegasus Town), and 43 in total across Aotearoa. parkruns mission is to transform health and happiness by empowering people to come together, to be active, social and outdoors. It’s important that everyone can benefit from engaging with parkrun events. A key part of that is ensuring they are free to enter, and for this reason parkrun include the following alongside their mission: Free, for everyone, forever. To do this, parkrun is entirely funded by donations, grants, sponsorship and the online shop. Each parkrun event is 100% facilitated by volunteers. It’s getting popular too - here are a few stats from Pegasus parkrun from 2023: - Pegasus parkrun events in 2023: 54

- Total finishes: 6,053

- Individual walkers, joggers and

runners: 1,107 - Total Distance covered: 30,265 kms - Volunteers: 117 - 2023 registrations at Pegasus: 437 We are seeing record numbers in 2024, with most participants being walkers. If you are looking to try out something new, then do feel free to join us. All you need to do is to sign up on-line to receive a barcode and bring a printed or electronic copy of

the barcode along with you. We use this to record your finish time, and you receive an email with your results afterwards. You can register for free here: https://www.parkrun.co.nz/register/ Besides, the best things in life are free, right? The Woodpecker February 2024 Page 13

Dreams Do Come True

Paul and Julie Blackler have long dreamt of owning a gym. So when the opportunity arose to start up Anytime Fitness Rangiora in 2017, they jumped right in. For the avid gymgoers, embarking on this new journey wasn’t just a good business decision; it was a lifestyle choice. The couple are acutely aware of the health benefits of exercise: Paul has battled with his weight since his youth, and Julie was regularly hospitalised as a child with chronic asthma. While Julie outgrew her asthma and maintains her fitness through regular exercise, Paul’s journey was a lot different. After a gym session in 2016 Paul noticed something was amiss. His doctor discovered one of Paul’s main arteries was 95% blocked. A stent was put in and Paul made a rapid recovery. Paul’s surgeon said going to the gym had highlighted the

Page 14 The Woodpecker February 2024

issue, potentially saving Paul’s life, and that his fitness contributed to his speedy recovery. Paul’s journey has made him fully understand the importance of keeping fit and has established a kinship with people from all walks of life looking to increase their health and fitness. Julie and Paul are particularly focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space. “Our aim is to be a gym where everyone feels comfortable. We’ve been to too many gyms where it’s all about lifting the most weights or wearing the latest gym gear; that’s not what we’re about. We’re here to help our members reach their health goals in a welcoming and friendly environment.” Paul, Julie and all the gym staff are North Canterbury locals and are passionate about the area and its people. Their mission is to ‘improve the self-esteem of North Canterbury’.

Woodend Methodist Church Update

Welcome to 2024 – Hope everyone is feeling refreshed after the Christmas / New Year period and getting back to normality now February is already upon us. We have certainly had plenty of rain early on and then the hot Norwest days that have dried the land out totally and now we are in an extreme fire risk situation. It certainly doesn’t take long to go from one extreme to the other. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the devastating fires in our district. Woodend weekly church service is held Sundays at 9am everyone welcome. Our minister is Darryn Hickling phone 022 675 7391 email minister. rangioramethodist@gmail.com Booking of our complex. Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust!

Nau mai haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust! We all hope you had a kirihimete ātaahua me te tau hou harikoa. All the rangers down at Tūhaitara Coastal Park

were planted back in October at an old forestry skid site. Makomako (Aristotelia serrata) was a species planted that particularly enjoyed the weather and the mulch left behind by

sure did, with everything down at the park running relatively smoothly over the break. The bouts of rain and sunshine we have been having have benefitted many of our later-season plantings; down south, an array of natives

log harvesting that had begun breaking down. The makomako planted has already doubled in size, with large, healthy, vibrant green leaves! Many factors affect plant growth, including but not limited to light, nutrient and water availability, soil

Page 16 The Woodpecker February 2024

composition and structure, all of which differ throughout the park. This diversity in conditions is why you might notice that many plantings establish and grow at different rates. If you look closely, you will see that the species between spots often differ, too. It is essential that when restoring forests and wetlands, we work with the plants and the environment to help increase chances of success. We can do this by looking at the environment and the factors that affect plant growth and then choosing species that favour the area’s conditions and trying to mimic natural areas in their layering. Miss Daisy’s node located on Woodend Beach Road has shown to have favourable conditions for many of our native species. The growth rate here has been incredible; this node was planted in August 2022, and the plants have taken off in just under 1.5 years. We couldn’t be prouder of the progress made, thanks to our team’s hard work and dedication and the support of our community. Together, we are positively impacting our environment and preserving the beauty of our coastal park. Photo 1 (left) Miss Daisy’s biota node growth in just under 1.5 years. Top image was taken just after the node was planted in August 2022. Bottom Image was taken in January 2024 by Nick C. We also want to say a special thanks to the men down at the MenzShed in Kaiapoi; the guys have been creating wētā and invertebrate hotels to put around the park to facilitate our education programmes and help us understand more about life within Tūhaitara Coastal Park. These hotels simultaneously provide

extra habitat while the biota nodes and planting are still establishing. With the help of the school groups, the rangers will also get some Lizard hotels up and running so we can better understand these little creatures, too! We encourage those of you reading to get the kids and create your habitats at home for invertebrates, wētā, or lizards; this can be done by either stacking some stones in the garden, planting a native wildflower seed mix, or getting creative and recycling some old wood to create your insect hotel filled with an array of forgeable items like sticks and pinecones. Woodend Garden Club A Christmas luncheon was held at the Community Centre in mid-December to finish off our year, and to start 2024, we visited three North Canterbury gardens by bus. Originally, we had planned the garden visits in October, but had to postpone due to the wind damage in the area. The trip was rescheduled to 15 January, and although rain threatened, we managed to stay dry. All three gardens we visited were different and the owners were happy to share their experience and expertise with the challenges faced in the harsh and varied conditions. The first garden visited was Red

Oak in the Weka Pass, a mature wellestablished garden where we saw the damage of the recent high winds. The Blue House in Amberley is a newer garden featuring a wide range of plants including succulents and unusual Page 18 The Woodpecker February 2024

perennials. Our final garden was the Lavender Fields at Waikuku where we learned about the different varieties of lavender and their uses.

some in our district and others backing up our neighbouring Brigades. Please be aware, that at the time of writing this article – 18 January 2024, we are in a restricted fire season (this could change to a total ban) and that means anyone planning on lighting Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade would like to wish our Community a Happy and Prosperous New Year. If you went by the Station at any time before Christmas, we hope you enjoyed our Christmas Light display. Just 18 days into the New Year, and the Woodend Brigade have already had a busy start to the year with 18 calls already. These have ranged from private fire alarms, vegetation fires (which include grass, hedge, hay, bush, and scrub), motor vehicle accidents and medical calls. With this hot / dry weather, that we’ve been having, we have attended a few vegetation fires, an open-air fire will need a permit. Anyone planning on lighting a fire must check weather conditions first – if it’s hot and windy, then do NOT light a fire – even if you have a permit! Make sure you undertake spark-generating activities – like mowing or grinding, during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or in the evening). Go to www.checkitsalright. nz for tips on how to stay safe.

Pegasus Community Centre Great news in December when the Council and Community Board endorsed the proposal for the Community Centre on Pegasus Main Street (further along from the shops and beside the lake). The proposal allows for the purchase of land and construction of a 400m2 facility by mid-2026 and includes provisions for a car park, a future building extension, as well as a potential passive youth space. The next steps are to finalise the land purchase before work can begin on design concepts for the Community Centre.

We have our first senior women’s rugby team. All open grade coaches and managers have been appointed as per below. The club has worked hard on sponsorship in the off season and will see a new playing and off field uniform for the whole club. Fundraising has started for a new set of lights for the number 3 field, and we have had council approval to install them. Improving our club amenities such as the internet and sewer. Now that this has been upgraded, we can look at putting in an additional shower block.

Woodend Indoor Bowling Club

This year is off to a flying start, and I imagine there are clubs around the district that are sorting out their itinerary for the coming season of sport. We are no different at the Woodend Indoor Bowling club. But, before we get started with the new season in March, we would like to offer people the opportunity to try their hand at this interesting game. So, if you are new to the community or you may want to get back into the sport, we are holding a ‘Give it a go’ evening. This will be held in the Woodend Community Centre at 7pm on the 26 February 2024. On 4 March, at 7pm our Club will hold its first Club night. The season will run from March to September. If you would like more information,

Looking for someone who is straight up, honest and hard working for you? Look no further...

Sunday 7 January The Waiora Links Community Trust facilitated a combined picnic day with the Vintage Car Club and The Pegasus Radio Sailing Club inviting the public along to the picnic at Pegasus Town Lake. The large crowd enjoyed testing their sailing skills with the Pegasus 880 yachts and inspecting the range of 80 vintage cars from several eras. To top it off DJ’z Chippy served up softfreeze ice creams along with their Fish & Chips and Lucy’s Koffie Mobile proving popular with everyone. Our MenzShed also proved popular, selling most of what they had on display. The weather played its part as well with strong requests to make this an annual event so watch this space for future notifications.

February 2024 Newsletter: Hope you had a good Christmas, New Year and a well deserved break. REPEAT PRESCRITION REQUESTS – We strongly recommend you put in writing requests for your repeat scripts at least a couple of weeks before running out. Options for you to do this quickly and seamlessly: (1) Manage my Health, (2) PMC website, (3) email request. Please remember to note the pharmacy to pick up from. If you have run out, please also let us know. Charges apply for repeat scripts and short scripts (bridging script i.e., 2 weeks until appointment). Please note we still follow safe and responsible medical practice and you may need to make an appointment if your Doctor advises that. So the more time you can allow for requesting medication, the smaller chance of you being inconvenienced. APPOINTMENT SLOTS – to look after your needs appropriately, please note a doctor’s appointments are 15 minutes long usually to cover one or… if time is favourable two issues. If you have multiple issues to discuss, please book two appointments (additional fees will apply). PRACTICE PLUS (afterhours extended care) – Available for you and your whanau afterhours virtual GP consultations; weekdays 5pm-10pm and weekends / public holidays 8am – 8pm. This service is provided by Practice Plus not Pegasus Medical Centre doctors. Pre-payment is required prior to booking (this is not a subsidised service). Click the link on our website to find more information. CERVICAL SCREENING CHANGES – The changes in primary screening for HPV involve a significant shift in methodology. This new approach entails testing for the presence of HPV. This complements or replaces the traditional method of taking liquid-based cytology (LBC) samples (previously known as a ‘smear test’). For most people, self-testing will be an option. A vaginal swab can be taken by the participant in privacy, or it can be taken by a clinician if preferred. The correct test for you will be discussed at your appointment. Please call our Nurse April or Karen if you have any questions or visit www.timetocervicalscreen.nz for more information. ADVANCED CARE PLANS - Living well your way with increasing health needs can take some planning for the future. Advance care planning is the process of thinking about, discussing and writing down your wishes about the type of medical care and treatment you want, including end of life care. Its is a guide in your own words, so health care professionals know your wishes, incase at some point, you are unable to tell us yourself. VASECTOMY – Dr Roger Dehn continues to run his specialist clinic at PMC for ‘No Scalpel Vasectomies’. Book an initial consultation with reception for this specialist procedure. Medical insurance this may cover the procedure. MELANOMA – NZ has the highest rate of mortality from Melanoma, as well as a high rate of skin damage from NZ sun exposure resulting in other types of skin cancer. Early detection provides the best outcomes. Being SunSmart (using sunscreen, hats, covering up when in the sun) lowers the risk of skin cancer. More info at www.sunsmart.org.nz Full and single mole checks are offered to anyone (you don’t need to be enrolled). Health insurance may subsidise this specialist appointment. We are Southern Cross Affiliated Provider. VIRAL ILLNESSES & COVID – we are still seeing patients with viral illnesses and COVID in the community, these can often be managed at home. If you have any concern, call and discuss with one of our nurses. Also, helpful information and online links: Phone Healthline 0800 611 116 or www.healthinfo.org.nz or www.kidshealth.org.nz/flu-influenza In a medical emergency, and if acutely unwell don’t hesitate to dial 111. 52 Pegasus Main Street, Pegasus Town Ph 03 920 4060 - www.pegasusmedicalcentre.co.nz Page 46 The Woodpecker February 2024
