Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus – Change of ‘Guard’
Lions Clubs New Zealand - We Serve
Thursday 22 June was Lions Change -Over night at The Good Home Pegasus when the incoming Officers made an oath to confirm that they will fulfil their elected roles for the following year. Photo shows the new President Jeff TaylorHayhurst who takes over from outgoing President John Canton.
Who are Lions?
Lions are ordinary people from all walks of life who enjoy getting together and doing good things. We are kind and generous people who want to help.
That’s why we work on projects to improve our communities and protect the environment. We get enormous satisfaction from the knowledge that what we do DOES make a difference. We also enjoy friendship and fun while doing so. Whenever Lions club members get together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. Because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy. Lions Clubs New Zealand is part of a global organisation with 1.4 million members in 208 Cont’d on Pg 11

Editor’s Note
Tēnā koutou
As we move past the shortest day of the year we look forward to longer days and once passed the worst of the winter that’s yet to come, we are still one step nearer to spring. This month I wanted to reflect on an anniversary, a 5th anniversary. July 2018 was the first edition I did upon taking on the Editor role for The Woodpecker Community Trust. It’s certainly been a journey, moving from an average of 24-28- page monochrome magazine to a full-colour magazine with a minimum of 40 pages. I’ve seen many changes and all for the better; more community groups sharing their achievements and updates and lots more advertisers with new ones coming on board every month.
It’s been an exciting journey and one which has been interesting and enjoyable.
Lowlight was having to come to terms with the software when I started, whereas the highlights are getting to grips with the software and giving back to the community as well as feeling more a part of it. I’ve gotten to know so many wonderful new people involved in business and in the community and being part of sharing this with the readers has been incredible.
In the last five years our distribution has also increased by 50% primarily due to new houses being built in Pegasus and Ravenswood. Of course the added value is for the advertisers in that they receive a greater reach! The last piece of news I’d like to share with you is that we have a new Treasurer. Her name is Nicole and whilst she won’t be elected to the board until our July meeting, we are thrilled to confirm she has accepted the role. I hope to be able to share more about her in the next edition of The Woodpecker. We rely so much on the volunteer help from all of the team at The Woodpecker Community Trust, so this is absolutely great news. It also means Ian Lennie will be able to hang up his ’Treasurer’s hat’ and concentrate on his Chairperson role. Ian has undertaken the Treasurer role for some time and has done an amazing job. I’m sure he’s very pleased to hang that ‘hat’ up!

CELEBRATIONS – Dr Janet Robinson and Dr John Dehn opened Pegasus Medical Centre 10 years ago, first practicing out of the now community rooms for 2 years then built the wonderful facility we are in today. We celebrated with the team by having a cake for morning tea.
REPEAT PRESCRITION REQUESTS – We strongly recommend you put in writing requests for your repeat scripts at least a couple of weeks before running out. Options for you to do this quickly and seamlessly: - (1) Manage my Health, (2) PMC website, (3) email request Please remember to note the pharmacy to pick up from. If you have run out, please also let us know. Charges apply for repeat scripts and short scripts (bridging script i.e., 1 week until appointment). Please note we still follow safe and responsible medical practice and you may need to make an appointment if request is declined. So the more time you can allow for requesting medication, the smaller chance of you being inconvenienced.

Nau mae haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust. Over the past couple of months our team has been busy planning some exciting new projects at Tūhaitara Coastal Park, many of which include opening up overgrown areas, planting native trees and expanding our network of biota nodes throughout the park. The areas that have been cleared were extremely dense and covered in a tangle of blackberry, thistle, broom, and many other types of invasive weeds. Now that this space has been opened up, our team will be organising some upcoming volunteer planting days and the dates will be
released in the next few weeks.
We have been busy brush cutting and planting hundreds of native trees along the trails at Pines Beach wetland. Our newest biota node which is still in its early stages can be located near our pā harakeke. While we had the digger hired, we cleared some ground at Gladstone to make room for a tōtara forest. We think that this will be a special planting and would love to get the community involved to help us plant these forest giants! Another project that we have been working on and which is in its early stages, is an installation of a fish passage. Fish passages are extremely important as they allow native freshwater fish to complete their lifecycles by connecting habitats and allowing for migration. Studies show that half of New Zealand’s freshwater networks and waterways are partially or fully inaccessible to migratory fish. Man-made barriers such as culverts, weirs and dams can block migration paths for native fish species i.e., eel and whitebait species such as īnanga, kōaro and kōkopu. If native fish are unable to access waterways to reach their destination and complete their

lifecycle, it is likely their numbers will reduce, or they may be lost from a stream completely.
Our Instagram account has been updated. If you would like to keep up to date with our activities at the park, please follow us at: tkot_ friendsoftuhaitarapark

Seiko-Kai Karate Academy
Another medal haul for members of Seiko-Kai Karate Academy at this year’s Canterbury Classic Karate Tournament held at West Melton Community Centre.
Ruby Wilson performed brilliantly against some of New Zealand’s best karateka in Kumite and secured a hard fought Bronze medal in the Premier Division. She followed up with another Bronze medal in the Open Kata and went on to compete against teammate Holly Taw who was competing in the Premier Kata Division for the first time to fight for Bronze.
Jake (The Cobra) Dale took Gold in the Open Kata followed by Bronze in the intermediate kata section.
James Deline took Silver in Kumite and followed up with a well-earned Bronze in kata for his section.
Lucy Edwards continues to impress taking Silver in both kata and kumite. Dani Falconer has been training extra classes in preparation for the competition and did herself proud by taking Silver in kata.
Vincent Taw won a couple of early rounds in the Intermediate Kumite Division but would eventually come short in a very closely fought Bronze bout.
Levi Deline was competing for the first time and went on to win his first bought in kumite, but narrowly missed out on a bronze. Likewise Ben Mullink gave a great account of himself in the kumite section to win his first bout. His next opponent went through to the next round beating him by a single point.
Sensei Dan Visker said “What I have witnessed today from our team is unbelievable in terms of where we have come from and how the Club has grown in regard to their individual developments. We have an incredible Team Spirit at the Dojo (training Hall) and I am super proud of all the competitors today. Each of them made the medal positions, and those who narrowly missed out on one today, will undoubtedly be successful at the next competition if they continue to train hard. I would like to thank the parents for providing additional support and particularly to Ioan Edwards, who assisted as Coach when we had more than opponent team member competing.”

Can you believe that seven years have already passed since Parkrun held their first event at Lake Pegasus? We had our first event in June 2016
Zealand. This is great for us, and it is also great for our very supportive community here in North Canterbury. parkrun is all about community. That’s why we do what we do – we want more of our locals to come out and walk, jog, or run the 5K course. There are many benefits to doing regular exercise and we try to make it as fun and as social as possible.
with 61 participants, we have had 328 parkrun’s in Pegasus Town and the finish line has been crossed over 24,000 times!
In June 2023 we celebrated our 7th birthday with a Mad Hatters Tea Party themed event. It was a hoot, and all 116 participants had a fantastic time! Many of the regulars and visiting parkrunners dressed up in character, and baked goodies for the occasion. We even had tea for all the participants at the finish!
We have lots of photos and videos on our Facebook page so perhaps log on and look if you have a spare moment. Fortunately, at Pegasus we have some very colourful characters and as a result our themed events attract visitors from all around New
We know that it can be daunting if you are not in the best of shape, but our event is for everyone. You don’t have to be fast, and you don’t have to have previous experience. You don’t have to walk with anybody or talk with anybody. All you need to do is show up, do the walk, jog, or run and we will email you afterwards with your result. You may even bring your dog!
Pictures Parkrun has a very social Facebook and Instagram presence so perhaps give us a look! You can also check out our website at parkrun. co.nz to find out more about how it works.
Go on – give it a try! You won’t be disappointed!

PEGASUS COMMUNITY CENTRE –COMMUNITY EMERGENCY HUB
Our Community Emergency Hub volunteers recently undertook further training at the Community Centre which involved an exercise reenacting an emergency scenario. This enabled our team to get familiar with how the Hub would operate and what each role entails before we open it up to the wider community.
Next steps are to invite our community and community groups who would like to come on board as volunteers and join our team and undertake training, so we have a strong resource to draw on in times of emergency. If this is something you are interested in, please let us know via email

is pleased to welcome Jill (Big) and Izzy (Little) to the whānau! Jill is the newest youth mentor to join our dedicated team of volunteers and will take part in our School-Based Mentoring Programme. Visiting Izzy’s school once a week for just one hour, Jill will spend quality, one-on-one time with Izzy, shooting hoops, baking and playing board games, all while getting to know each other.
NORTH CANTERBURY
We are delighted to let you know about two new services that Citizens Advice Bureau is offering.
Free Community Law Canterbury Legal Clinic
We are partnering with Community Law Canterbury to provide a weekly free legal clinic in our office every Monday. It will run from 9.30am to 2pm and clients will have up to 45 minutes with the lawyer. This is a drop-in clinic as well as by appointment. There are some areas that Community Law doesn’t cover so please get in touch for further information and / or to book an appointment.
School-Based Mentoring is a great option for employers to support our programme by allowing their staff to take one hour off each week to mentor a child in their community. Do you have one hour to give each week?
Have you thought about mentoring? Please get in touch today to find out how you can make a difference. Call 03 310 7004 or email northcanterbury@bbbs.nz
We’d like to acknowledge the seven local firms who have provided a fortnightly clinic for many years in conjunction with CAB. These firms have been generous with their time and expertise and their continued service to our community via the clinics is greatly appreciated. The appointments are fortnightly on a Wednesday and last for 10 minutes. Bookings are essential.
Supplementary Health Transport service
The other new service we’re offering concerns transport for older people in our community who may have mobility issues, that can’t be catered for by the St John health shuttle, or their appointment times are outside those required by the health shuttle. This is a partnership between Citizens
Page 26 The Woodpecker July 2023
Advice Bureau North Canterbury, Presbyterian Support, Salvation Army and the North Canterbury Minibus Trust.
The CAB’s role in this service is to take the bookings and send on the information. If possible, the health shuttle should be the first option. All clients are encouraged to take a support person and if they have mobility issues, they must have a support person.
About Us
If you or someone you know needs information, advice or support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help. All our services are free and confidential, and no question is too big or too small. Our office is open between 9.30am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday.
You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222 or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Matt has been with us now for about 18 months (Covid getting in the way for a bit) - firstly coming along to training nights on Monday to see what was involved, then training intensively with our training team and members of the Brigade. Matt has proved to be a valuable Member and successfully passed his 7-day recruit course on the 26 May. You will see that part of the reason he joined was after helping a Family in a Motor Vehicle Accident. These past few days, we were called out to two very traumatic Motor Vehicle Accidents and Matt was on the Fire Appliance for the first call and our Support Vehicle for the second. He acquitted himself extremely well, working alongside our members on what were very difficult calls. We have asked him to write a bit about himself and why he joined the Brigade. “Hi, I’m Matt Selway.
As a part time stay at home Dad of two young children, and a part time Early Childhood Educator, I am proud to be
able to now add Volunteer Firefighter to that list.
I was motivated to join the brigade after an experience I had witnessing a
car crash while driving. I stopped to help and was able to get down a small bank and help a mother and her two children safely out of their vehicle. Being able to provide support to the Community in this way was something I wanted to continue.
My training journey over the past 18 months has been helped along by an amazing training team who went above and beyond to ensure I was set up with all the core skills needed every step of the way.”
If you are interested in finding out more about our Brigade, particularly if you are available during the day – come down on a Monday Nights training at 7pm or give our Chief, Shayne Robinson a call on 021 286 6574; meet the team and see how you can contribute.

Mayor Dan Gordon Column
As I write this column, I can’t quite believe we are more than halfway through the year. We are past the shortest day and looking forward to celebrating Matariki and the school holidays.
We have also recently celebrated Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week.
Council’s Community Team estimates that there are 1.5 million hours of volunteering in the Waimakariri District each year – which is outstanding. Without the support of those who generously give of their time, our community could not function as well as it does. Our volunteers are involved in a range of vital activities and services in our District including sport, youth, church, family, education, community, earthquake response, fire service, and arts. I would like to acknowledge the substantial commitment of the unsung heroes who work quietly in the background, making our community a better place to live.
I would also like to make special mention of the Woodend Fire Brigade who along with other brigades, attended the tragic car accidents in Sefton recently.
Those situations are extremely difficult for Brigade members, and I know I speak on behalf of the whole District when I say we are all very grateful to
our volunteer fire fighters for their service to our communities.
There has been some good news for those of us who drive electric vehicles. Meridian have confirmed they have finished installation of a 50kW DC EV charger at Woodend Community Centre and at Pearson Park in Oxford.
The installations of the new charging stations are part of an agreement between the Waimakariri District Council and Meridian to create publicly accessible EV charging stations on Council land.
The first stage of the roll out provided AC Charging stations in Woodend and Oxford.
The AC charger is typically installed at locations where drivers will be parked for longer durations such as cafes, libraries, community facilities and retail areas.
The new DC Charging stations will provide drivers with fast charging options.
The EV chargers are fully owned and operated by Meridian who also cover the full cost of the equipment and installation. Council licenses access to the land in Council-owned carparks. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they may want to discuss.
Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt. nz or phone 021 906 437.
I’m here to help.

beware!
Keep pets indoors and away from surfaces being treated with moss and mould cleaning products.
Cool and damp weather can make our drives slippery with moss and slime, but before treating those areas, think of our pets. Those products can be very harsh to unprotected feet and pads. Please remember to rinse off these products thoroughly as they can cause nasty foot burns as well as damaging the mouth as they are licked off the feet.
