Youngest assistant deliverer for The Woodpecker!

As you know we are always on the lookout for more deliverers in our distribution areas. Usually we say things like if you’re a dog walker, have a dog, like walking, love meeting people, or just want to help out a registered charity doing a monthly volunteer role, this is the job for you.

However, we recently heard of a great story in that one of our Woodend deliverers, a mum (Karen) of a young boy (Noa) takes her son with her when she is delivering The Woodpecker. To encourage to him do this she gives him

some ‘pocket money’ for ‘helping her’ and he loves doing it too! The purpose of sharing this story is that now we have another angle we can invite or encourage someone to be a volunteer, i.e. if you’re a mum of small children, you could have them accompany you on your delivery rounds. and encourage them to see that volunteering is a great thing to do for a wonderful cause. If you’re interested in becoming a deliverer please email the Editor on debs.thewoodpecker@ outlook.co.nz

Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou

Welcome to the first day of winter. Like me, you are probably feeling the year is disappearing faster than ever! This month I wanted to focus on The Woodpecker’s growth in terms of distribution and print numbers.

Waikuku Deliverer and Increase in Distribution – Up until this month, we have been delivering to Waikuku via the shop mainly due to our inability to secure a designated Waikuku deliverer. I’m pleased to say we now have one which is great news! Due to this, we now have the ability to deliver to all households in the area which means increasing our print numbers by 400 to 4,000 to accommodate the additional copies being delivered.

Increase in Advertisers – We know there are many local businesses in the area and lots in the Waikuku area, and so hope that more local businesses will consider advertising especially when they receive their own copy.

You too can play your part by sharing The Woodpecker with others. If you know of someone who has a business or even a community club or group that you feel would benefit from some publicity and awareness, please ask them to email me.

Treasurer role – You may also have seen our advert for a volunteer treasurer the last two months. Our treasurer Ian Lennie has undertaken this role for several years and as at our

AGM felt this role should be passed to someone else. I’m pleased to say we have managed to find ourselves a wonderful lady who is going to take this role on starting shortly. Her profile will be featured in next month’s magazine.

AGM – A couple of weeks ago The Woodpecker Community Trust held its AGM which was well attended with 11 visitors in attendance. We had a couple of changes on the board, namely the Woodend Community Association representative, Mark Paterson and Heidi Wood. PRGI representative join our board. We welcome them with open arms and sadly say a fond farewell to the outgoing representatives Doug Wethey and Roger Rule. We also had another member leave our board, Ian McGregor who due to work constraints was no longer able to continue. We have a strong, active and supportive board led by our Chair Ian Lennie and look forward to another great year running The Woodpecker. North Canterbury Clubs - Workshop

In May, the Woodend Friendship Club once again hosted a Workshop at which representatives from the seven North Canterbury FNZI Friendship clubs met to discuss issues, raise concerns and share ideas and suggestions.

The meeting room for the Workshop at the Woodend Community Centre was set up to ensure that approx. 30 club officers and committee members were seated at individual tables, in groups relating to their respective roles, e.g. president, secretary, treasurer, newsletter editor, outings and guest speaker organisers. A nominated member from each table took notes relating to the topics discussed. Following the allotted time for discussion each scribe (reporter) was invited to share their notes with the entire group.

The aim of the Workshop was to encourage communication between the FNZI Friendship member clubs, to help officers and committee members become more aware of their roles and to discuss issues being faced by similar groups and clubs, i.e. falling membership, unable to form a committee, cost of outings, etc.

Maxeen Dzenis, President of the Woodend Friendship Club, and club members provided and served morning tea prior to the meeting. Jack Dzenis, recently appointed as the FNZI Councillor for the Northern South Island district, and current VicePresident of the Woodend Friendship Club was a guest at the meeting and spoke about his role as a Councillor.

Jack’s district includes clubs from as far north as Takaka to Waimate in the south. Other guests were Ivan Shaw (FNZI North Canterbury Area Rep.) and Rosemarie Shaw (FNZI Centre Administrator). Maxeen and fellow members of her club were thanked for their contribution towards a successful event. A vote of thanks was given to Rosemarie and Ivan who have now relinquished their respective FNZI Friendship roles.

Feedback from the meeting was positive; attendees feel better informed about their respective roles; sharing of club newsletters encouraged and suggestions for guest speakers and club outings appreciated. FNZI Friendship clubs are non-sectarian, non-political nor are they service clubs; their aim is to encourage the semi-retired and retired to meet and socialise in the company of like-minded others.

St Barnabas Church Update

During May, St Barnabas was the venue for the funeral of Reverend Ken Davy, who has been associated with St Barnabas for many years. It was Ken who saw us through the early years of Woodend / Pegasus becoming a Parish in its own right; his faith, wisdom and humility got us through some difficult times, especially when combined with his wonderful sense of humour.

Ken continued his association with St Barnabas to the end if you picked up a pew sheet right up until 14 May you would have seen his name in the list of clergy for the parish. RIP Ken, you were greatly loved and will be very much missed.

We will be holding two additional services in the next few weeks. The first, titled Come Holy Spirit, is on 28 May; sadly by the time this goes to print it will already have taken place, we will let you know how it went. The other is on 17 June and is a Prayer and Reflection service. We will still be holding our usual services, 9.30am for a more traditional service followed by morning tea; then a contemporary service at 11.00am with children’s groups, followed by a light lunch. This month’s Ladds and Lattes coffee morning was cancelled this month as Ken’s funeral took precedence; normally we meet at the Flat White in Pegasus, on the third Friday of the month.

There is plenty of chatting and laughter, as well as coffee and food! We welcome all new friends here and we’d love to see you too. In the meantime, enjoy the sun whilst it lasts!

Woodend Methodist Church Report

The movie on Wednesday 7 June at 1pm will be a romance / comedy

Entry will be a gold coin donation. Afternoon tea will be provided. Woodend weekly church service is held on Sundays at 9am, everyone welcome.

Our minister is Darryn Hickling phone 022 675 7391.

Meet Senior Fire Fighter Stu Monson.

Senior Fire Fighter Stu

Monson is married to partner Nyree and has four adult children. His work involves building and repairing swimming pools. This is what he had to say about joining the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade. “After talking to a friend in 2012, I went along to an open night at the Woodend Volunteer Fire Station.

Not long after, I joined the Brigade and one of my first training exercises was a controlled house burn in Woodend, which encouraged me to get proficient and enrol for my 7-day recruit course. On the Course, we learnt hose and ladder skills, BA (breathing apparatus) use and Live Fire training amongst other things.

This was followed up with consolidation at Monday night’s training at the Station. I have since completed other courses, including Qualified Fire Fighter, Motor Vehicle Accident Course, Light Emergency Response Driver, and currently after attending the latest course hold the rank of Senior Fire Fighter. Over this time, I have learnt valuable

life skills and have enjoyed helping the Community when needed”.

All our members are valued for what they bring and the time they spend at the Brigade. If you think this is something you are interested in and are available during the day, please contact our Chief Fire Officer Shayne Robinson 027 207 7819.

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

and I met with Pegasus and Waikuku residents along with Community Board Chair Shona Powell and Council’s Roading Portfolio Holder Cr Philip Redmond, to discuss the proposed Woodend safety improvements.

I was deeply saddened by the recent passing of a wonderful stalwart of our District – Michael Blackwell.

Michael made a huge contribution to Kaiapoi and the Waimakariri community, especially through the iconic Blackwells Department Store, his role with the Waimakariri Water Zone Committee and his passion for the environment.

Michael was instrumental in lobbying for Council’s recent purchase of a Lineside Road property that has significant potential to better the water quality of the Kaiapoi River.

I personally received a call from Michael who was then unwell in hospital … that didn’t deter him from advocating strongly.

He was delighted to learn that Council had confirmed the purchase and I understand from his brother Andrew that he considered the Council acquiring this block as his biggest victory. Michael will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Recently, James Caygill – Director of Regional Relationships for Waka Kotahi

We discussed Waka Kotahi’s proposal of wire rope barriers being placed on the stretch of State Highway 1 between Pegasus and Waikuku.

The feedback we received at the meeting was that people are not in favour of wire rope barriers. The residents suggested a reduction of speed on that stretch of road to 60km and asked if that would negate a need for wire rope barriers. James Caygill suggested potentially it could, but Council endorsement of such a proposal would be required.

Council has since written to Waka Kotahi to express our concern about this plan including the lack of a safe crossing at the Pegasus / Ravenswood roundabout, the proposed reduction of lanes, and to have a single lane exit out of Pegasus.

We have asked Waka Kotahi to look at other options. I will update you when we get a response.

As always, I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they may want to discuss.

GLADSTONE DOG PARK

As many users of the Gladstone dog park will know, it has been looking a little worse for wear with gaps under the fences where dogs can escape, holes appearing in various locations in the park alongside a need for shelter for dog park users.

Woodend/Sefton Community Board were aware of the issues and have been discussing options. As part of that process, we had the opportunity to provide feedback from park users.

At our May PRGI committee meeting, Ian Fong, from the Woodend/Sefton Community Board advised that funding has been approved by the Council to improve the Pegasus Dog park.

Plans are being drawn up for improvements, and some repair work has already begun on the fences and filling in holes.

Thank you to the dog park users who have been proactive in voicing their concerns. We will continue to keep everyone updated as progress is made.

REPEAT PRESCRITION REQUESTS – We strongly recommend you put in writing requests for your repeat scripts at least a couple of weeks before running out. Options for you to do this quickly and seamlessly:

1. Through Manage My Health

2. Through our website www.pegasusmedicalcentre.co.nz

3. Through an email to us reception@pegsusmedicalcentre.co.nz with ‘repeat script request’ in subject line

Please remember to note the pharmacy to pick up from. If you have run out, please also let us know. Charges apply for repeat scripts and short scripts (bridging script i.e., 1 week until appointment) Please note we still follow safe and responsible medical practice and you may need to make an appointment if request is declined. So the more time you can allow for requesting medication, the smaller chance of you being inconvenienced.

FLU VACCINES – See if you fit the criteria for a funded flu vaccine www.health.govt.nz search flu vaccines. Unfunded flu vaccines cost $35. Book a slot with the nursing team.

MELANOMA – NZ has the highest rate of mortality from Melanoma . We recommend getting a full mole check regularly. If you are concerned about 1 or 2 moles which have changed an earlier and quicker appointment can be offered. Your health insurance may subsidise this appointment.

APPOINTMENT SLOTS – To look after your needs appropriately, please note a doctor’s appointments are 15 minutes long usually to cover one or if time is favourable two issues. If you have multiple issues to discuss, please book two appointments (additional fees will apply).

STAFFING UPDATE – In the coming winter months unfortunately cold / flu and covid will have a significant impact on our practice affecting our reception, nurse and doctor workforce. This means some days there will be limited appointments available and we may start to get booked out a week + in advance. When we have limited capacity, we will do our best to meet your needs but sometimes may refer you or your whanau to an urgent care facility like 24hour surgery following triage. We strongly suggest you book your routine appointments and review your medication supply well in advance to ensure an appointment is made that suits your plans. Please bear with us over the next few months while we do our best to provide you with timely care. Practice Plus is an alternative option for same day virtual after-hours clinician appointments see www.practiceplus.nz - links on our website.

KEEPING US ALL WELL- We will be exercising a higher level of infection control within the practice so your co-operation with this would be appreciated, please continue to wear a mask within the practice.

We will continue to screen patients for cold / flu / covid – again this is for your protection, as well as our staff and compromised patients in waiting room If you have symptoms, you may be required to be seen differently i.e., in vehicle.

In a medical emergency, and if acutely unwell don’t hesitate to dial 111.

Ashley- Rakahuri Estuary

Informative presentation at our May meeting from the AshleyRakahuri Rivercare group. They are concerned with the disturbance of the white-fronted tern colony and the breeding grounds for banded dotterel by people, dogs, vehicles, and drones at the Ashley/Rakahuri Estuary. Also, the increase in numbers of the southern black-backed gull which are a predator. There is signage prohibiting dogs, but this is regularly ignored. Please remember the Estuary is a real asset to our community and it is up to us all to protect it. https://www.arrg.org.nz/

Our next meeting – all are welcome

Monday 12th June starting at 5.30pm at the Woodend Community Centre. If you would like to see what will be discussed check out the Board Facebook page or the agenda at waimakariri.govt.nz/your-council/meetings/minutes-and-agendas around the Thursday of the previous week.
