How did we manage to get to March already? Time marches on and for the most part we are still enjoying some great summer weather. One of the areas I wanted to focus on this month was for ideas, suggestions or contributions for our front-page stories for The Woodpecker. In some cases there is a real standout story which is easy to factor in. However, on occasions, there may be times when we might be short on something really interesting or topical that would be helpful for our community to know about. If you would like to share something that you feel is worthy of highlighting on the front page then please do feel free to send in and whilst I can’t of course promise a front page, it would be good to have a choice or an option. Examples might be significant changes in a community service or a community contribution by a group, club or person which deserves some acknowledgement or recognition. The other area I would like to talk about this month is that of encouraging more community groups and clubs to input generally. We have almost two pages of community contacts listed each month in The Page 2 The Woodpecker March 2022
Woodpecker. Imagine if we had a short update from all of these on a regular basis. Woodend Methodist Report
The upgrading of the Woodend Methodist Hall has commenced so will be out of commission for a few months. We are worshipping at the Rangiora Methodist Church, King Street, Rangiora at 10.30am on Sundays until Woodend is reopened. All invited to join us. We welcomed our new Rangiora / Woodend Parish Minister Darryn Hickling and his family to a special Induction Service earlier in February which was well attended from far and wide. The Rangiora Church office hours are Tuesdays 12.00pm to 3.00pm, Wednesdays 9.45am to 1.45pm, Thursdays 11.00am to 2.00pm. Phone 313 3448. Many thanks to those who helped at the recent Table Top sale and contributed goods. We raised approximately $850. Well done.

NORTH CANTERBURY Each year, CABs throughout Aotearoa New Zealand celebrate Awareness Week. We will mark it in 2022 from Monday, 14 March to Sunday, 20 March. This year’s theme is Renters’ Rights. Amidst the trials of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen ongoing enquiries from renters facing tough and trying times. Tenants and renters have had issues with the poor state of housing, high rents, lack of housing, disputes with landlords, maintaining relationships with flatmates, isolating when sick in times of COVID, and much more. We want to reach out to renters and inform them of their rights and let them know that the Citizens Advice Bureau is always there for them when it comes to valuable confidential information and advice. We are also promoting the Aratohu Tenant Advocacy, a comprehensive online resource developed by CABNZ that provides support and guidance to tenants and their advocates. We also have a broad range of information about tenancy and renting on our website www.cab.org.nz We invite you to get in touch with us if you need help.

It has been a mixed start to the year with some happy, and some sad occasions. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge Blackwell’s Department Store’s 150th anniversary. It was a privilege to speak and provide a toast at their recent celebration. Blackwell’s history is tightly woven into the story of the development and growth of Kaiapoi, with the store representing the true centrepiece of our river town. From the founder George Henry Blackwell to today’s generation of Andrew, Michael and family, they provide an excellent example of the success that local businesses can have when they focus on serving the community and providing outstanding customer service to successive generations of Waimakariri residents. Last year, to mark their 150 years, we were delighted to accept the gift of the Karo sculpture by renowned artist Andrew Drummond, which now sits prominently near the Kaiapoi River for all to enjoy. A very generous gift. It was also a privilege to attend the Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade awards and to acknowledge Ron Ealam’s 25year service and award of a gold star. As a community we couldn’t function without the people who generously volunteer their time. Ron is an excellent example of that, having also given 48 years of service to Oxford Search and Rescue. We thank Ron for his outstanding commitment to the community. The fire at Sutton Tools was Page 6 The Woodpecker March 2022
devastating news. My thoughts and those of the Council go out to the 100 employees. Sutton Tools has been part of Kaiapoi for 60 years and employed many generations of local families. Immediately following the fire I phoned the owner in Australia and expressed that they are a much-valued business in Kaiapoi and Waimakariri. Recently I sent a letter, which I and all the Councillors signed, reiterating our ongoing support and that we are here to help. Sutton Tools remaining in Kaiapoi and Waimakariri is a priority for our Council. We are committed to supporting them in the coming weeks, months and years ahead. Intense weather events are occurring more often. Council staff, contractors, Civil Defence and volunteers are always on standby prepared to support our community. The weekend of 12-13 February was a case in point and I want to acknowledge and thank all those who support us to make sure we are protected. Cont’d on Page 10

Currently in training to become a Mentoring Coordinator, Olivia joins Ellie Le Gros and Jo Sim in making a positive difference in the lives of rangatahi (young people) through professionally supported, mentoring relationships across the region. Olivia says: “Joining BBBS has been a dream come true for
me. Having volunteered at The BIG Breakfast community fundraiser, my new role makes me so excited to officially be part of the team! When Roses Blossomed on Tepeyac A True Story As Told by Anastasia Marambos Part Two
Juan Bernardino lay on his mat on the floor. His forehead burned with fever, and he was barely able to speak. His nephew, Juan Diego, had been busy constantly for almost two days, fetching water for Juan Bernardino and helping him drink it, giving him medicine, fanning him from the heat, making a broth that Juan Bernardino tried to drink but couldn’t, and even cleaning out their little hut so that it could be more pleasant for the sick man. Juan Diego had been so busy looking after his sick uncle that he hardly had time to think of anything else. But he did remember the young woman who he had seen the other day on the top of Tepeyac hill. He remembered how she had sent him to the bishop to request that a church be built on the top of Tepeyac hill. Obediently, he had gone. At first, the bishop was reluctant, but when Juan Diego had persisted, the bishop requested that the lady provide a sign, so that he could know whether the apparition was genuine or fake. On Sunday night, the lady had promised to provide a sign on the next day. But Juan Diego hadn’t returned on the next day. His Uncle, Juan Bernardino, had suddenly become very ill, and he had been up all night and all day, taking care of him. Page 10 The Woodpecker March 2022
But now, there was nothing left to be done for Juan Bernardino. He could not eat, drink, or move, and he could barely talk. What both uncle and nephew had guessed at was now obvious. Juan Bernardino was dying. “Fetch a priest” Juan Bernardino murmured, feebly. Juan Diego nodded, and there were tears in his eyes as he left the hut. He ran as fast as he could to the village. As he approached Tepeyac hill, he thought about the lady he’d seen on top of it. He did not want to meet her now, and so he decided to go around the hill instead of over it. But, as he turns a corner, he stops short. The lady is standing there, looking at him, and smiling gently. “Where are you going?” She asks. He has no idea what to say. Pegasus parkrun
It is really important that we look after each other right now. Many sectors of our community will be impacted as COVID-19 number are projected to steadily increase in the coming weeks. Our community needs us to step up and help where help is needed. Please step in if you suspect that someone is doing it tough. Everyone reacts differently to difficult events, and some may find this time more challenging than others. The
ways people think, feel and behave are likely to change as this situation evolves – we will all have good days and bad days. If you don’t know how to do this, simply just reach out and ask if the person is okay. It starts with a simple question, and then a conversation. How about inviting them for a stroll around Lake Pegasus, followed by a chat at the café? The Woodpecker March 2022 Page 11
Here at Pegasus parkrun, all our events are paused until further notice. A few parkrun events around NZ are operating, however at Pegasus we are restricted by the group gathering limit of 100 people. As it stands, we don’t know when a restart might be on the cards for parkun events in Canterbury. We are working closely with parkrun HQ, who are working directly with the NZ Government to understand when we can restart. We are keeping ourselves by doing (not)parkruns, a virtual 5K alternative to parkrun that can be done anywhere at any time. We have around 30 Pegasus parkrunners who are contributing to the leader board every week. Pegasus are punching well above our weight on the national (not) parkrun leader board, we are typically coming in at 1st and 2nd position. Our biggest competitors are Whangarei parkrun, and Anderson parkrun (who are keeping up the banter on our Facebook page. Pegasus parkunners are also meeting up on a Saturday morning at 9.30am for a coffee and a quiz, and perhaps

RONEL’S COMMUNITY CUPPA The February Community Cuppa was attended by 30 Pegasus residents and had a bit of a different feel to it with the Covid restrictions. Rather than bring in a guest speaker, we decided to hear some stories from a few of our regular Cuppa attendees. Kay Mills, Collette Macgregor, John Allin and our host, Ronel Stephens, each gave a brief history of their lives before Pegasus and what they have been up to since coming to live in Pegasus. The wide range of activities in Pegasus came to light as they Volunteers set up for the February Cuppa talked about being involved with the Monday walking group, golf, SayGo exercise class, Pegasus Plus social group, community watch, Brownies, Community Centre volunteering and so much more! Update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park
A new year, a new school term! Welcome back to our tamariki! Our regular school groups are starting to return to the park where they actively learn about nature, culture, and ecological stewardship. Connections between culture and nature were the focus of the first visits of the term. A visit to the high Tūtaepatu Lagoon lookout is the perfect place to talk about the significance of the lagoon, and to get a fantastic overview of the park to talk about changes to the landscape over time. The tamariki used their imaginations to visualise the extensive wetlands and water channels that once stretched from Kaiapoi Pā all the way over to the Waimakariri River. Talking about some of the mahinga kai resources the lagoon provides, we passed around raupō leaves and dried harakeke flower stems, which are used for making mōkihi, a vessel used for traversing the wetlands. The air-filled harakeke stems provide buoyancy, while the raupo outer is watertight.
We then looked at a map of the park showing the network of biota nodes, which currently stands at 63! By digging down and creating freshwater groundwater ponds, then planting native tree species we are creating habitats for native wildlife. Biota nodes form a biodiversity skeleton across the park, which is helping to rehabilitate the indigenous coastal ecosystem. Our biota nodes are adopted and maintained by a school, a community group or a local whānau. If you, your school or your community group would like to find out more and adopt a biota node please get in touch. Another way to get involved is to take part in our community tree planting events. Rangiora Toy Library Rangiora toy library offers a wide range of exciting toys perfect for young minds to explore, learn and grow. At a one-off annual cost of $90 for a Duty member (Currently must hold a vaccine pass.) This membership allows full access to the library between 9.30am and 11.30am Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Or we have a new Click and Collect membership also at $90 per year plus $5 per Click and Collect-toys are booked online and brought out to your vehicle. This is available for all, regardless of vaccination status and is available between 11.30am and 12.30pm on Saturdays. Each membership allows you to borrow up to seven toys for two weeks. Rangiora toy library has outdoor toys, indoor toys including baby toys, bouncy castles, party hire items and our awesome new science kits that you can make wonderful creations at home with your kids. We have a growing educational section to help support young learners up to age 6. Throughout the year we have raffles and goodies for sale, currently we have stainless steel pegs and straws for sale and in spring we will have some flower bulbs for sale, with the proceeds going back into the toy library. This Month with Harry
More on the story of my life so far and long may it continue. First up a correction to last month’s epistle- I was born on 3 of July, not January. On 10 April 1966 at the tender age of 19, I set off on my OE leaving Wellington on board the RHMS Australis, a Greek boat. RHMS stands for ‘Royal Hellenes Mail Service’. I shared cabin 1269 with another Kiwi and 2 Irishmen. After a fairly rough crossing we arrived at Melbourne for a day’s sightseeing before another extremely rough voyage to Freemantle. Whilst it didn’t worry me, there was more food coming out of people than going in!!From Perth it was onto Colombo in what was then Ceylon. We had a couple of days as the boat needed a change of sparkplugs or something. For a ridiculous sum we hired a taxi for the days and saw such sights as the Ghats, precious gems being mined, snake charmers and hordes of beggars, both young and old. About half way across the Arabian Sea on the way to Aden, the next stop, I threw a bottle containing my brother’s name and address overboard. A few months later it was found by a young boy in the Maldive Islands. Aden was then a British protectorate in Yemen, was probably the most exciting stopover. At that time, the local people were doing their damnest to get rid the English. What they didn’t realise the sole income of the town was the sale of duty-free goods to passing boats. When the British left so did the passing boats with its GDP. We weren’t allowed to stand on the town side
as the boat entered the harbour as the naughty rebels occasionally fired their rifles at visiting ships. Only one member of each family was allowed on shore where groups of four latched on to a waiting soldier and were escorted round the town. Ours was a hard case member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the current army group. The previous day he did not have to shoot a rebel that passed by on the back of a Ute. The naughty man brandished a grenade at our boy but he threw the pin instead. The bit he held onto rendered him seriously dead. From Aden we sailed up the Red Sea to the Suez. Here we were bussed to Cairo with its obligatory visit to the pyramids, camel ride and meeting more beggars and pimps. On into the Mediterranean Sea and the next port Naples. Passing through the straits of Messina we were treated to the spectacular sight of Mt Etna erupting. A visit to a cameo factory, Pompeii and a proper pizza shop were highlights. We berthed at Southampton exactly one month after leaving Wellington. TBC JH

COMMUNITY CENTRE NEWS Unfortunately, due to the shift in levels in the Red Traffic light system and the escalating number of covid community cases, the Pegasus Residents Group Inc. (PRGI) has made the decision to cease our PCC volunteer operations at the Pegasus Community Centre until further notice to protect our volunteers. Please note this only applies to the PCC VOLUNTEER OPENING TIMES: Mon: 2-4pm, Wed & Sat: 10am-12pm. It does not apply to any other bookings or activities at the centre. This also means there will be no JP services at the centre during this time. JP services run at libraries around the district – visit the Waimakariri Libraries website for days and times. The COMMUNITY BOOK CAVE will be closed but we will still put the book trolley out at the centre (during the days/times above) for our book lovers, with an area beneath the trolley for book returns. NEW RESPONSE EQUIPMENT Thankyou to Ray White Real Estate Pegasus In last months Woodpecker, we wrote an article with the headline “We cannot HELP YOU if we cannot FIND YOU!!” as we had come across properties with no street or rapid number on their fence/house. Going along the same lines, there has been a rapid rise of houses being built in our community over the last few years, in Woodend, Pegasus and most recently Ravenswood. It’s become a problem for the Brigade, in locating some of the new Streets and until recently, has relied on a member carrying their phone to get the location. We recently spoke to Justin Hartley at Ray White Pegasus (Real Estate Agents) and he was more than happy to purchase an iPad for us, so that we could run the software that Fire and Emergency New Zealand have implemented, to enable us to get to calls/incidents quicker. The software also gives us other information, ie hazards, type of incident etc that we may be dealing with which is extremely useful when attending calls. We would like to thank Justine and his team at Ray White Pegasus for making our calls a lot easier to get to. As we approach the season of Lent, we have also moved into an upgrade in the current traffic light system. This has made it necessary to bring in a few changes to our meetings and services. Our two Sunday services will still be running at the same times, 9.30am and 4.30pm. However, the 9.30am will, for the time being, be available only to those who have a Vaccine Pass. The 4.30pm services, referred to jokingly as the BBQ Edition, are open to all; they will be hosted simultaneously at three separate homes, each accommodating up to 25 people. In addition, for those who cannot or do not wish to attend in person, the 4.30pm service will be Livestreamed on our Facebook page; an audio of the 9.30am is also posted there. In these times of confusion and worry, we are fortunate we can still stay in touch with one another, albeit in a different way. And we look forward to the time when we can once again worship together without restrictions. Take care of yourselves this month and enjoy the Autumn weather. And may the season of Lent remind you anew of the one certainty which never changes. God’s love.

At present, with increasing number of Covid Positive Cases, to protect you and our staff, we encourage Phone Consults. If your doctor needs to see you Face 2 Face, it will be arranged. Wearing your Mask is Necessary inside the medical centre. We will be looking after any Positive patients who are enrolled with us. The nurses will call these patients and assess them initially with further follow-up, later and advice. Few links added on the website to guide you. Please continue to sign in at the entrance either by manual tracer or QR code, wear a mask and social distance. If you have cold/flu/covid symptoms please do not enter the building, instead call us and discuss your concerns with the nurse and they will provide a plan of care for you and your whanau. COVID SWABS: Patients who have symptoms such as sore throat,runny nose, cough, loss of smell, fever, shortness of breath or Household contacts of Positive cases, please call us and speak with the nurse to arrange a time in our daily Covid swab clinics. At present they are done as "drive thru" while you are in your car on " Matamata Quay " Car park area ( driving from Mary Allen and turning Right into Matamata). This might change according to circumstances and numbers. We will update it on the website. COVID VACCINATIONS: We have increased our clinics and strongly encourage you to book online through www.bookmyvaccine.co.nz or by calling 0800 282 926. You don’t have to be a patient of PMC get your vaccine done with us, we welcome everyone! We will accept walk-ins on the day if we have enough vaccines, please note you may need to wait as booked vaccines will take priority.

Kaiapoi Community Patrol
The Kaiapoi Community Patrol works closely with the local Police as extra eyes and ears in the community. This year we celebrate our 30th anniversary. We are one of 150 Community Patrols from around New Zealand, affiliated to Community Patrols of New Zealand (CPNZ) based at Police National Headquarters in Wellington. Our purpose is to help the Police and other agencies build safer communities. Our Patrol vehicle is active in Kaiapoi, Woodend, Pegasus, Ohoka and other areas in between, covering local suburban and rural areas. Patrol routes randomly cover many places such as Business areas, Schools, Parks/ Playgrounds, Residential Streets and Building sites.
