Editor’s Note
Tēnā koutou
Welcome to the first day of autumn officially hoping the great weather continues for a little while before the onset of winter is upon us.
It’s certainly a bumper publication this month with a packed 64-pages which is excellent news for readers who have lots more to read, and perhaps not such excellent news for our deliverers whom I know feel the difference with the extra pages.
It’s pleasing to see we’ve had more advertisers come on board and for us to find out who is out there and providing what services.
We’ve also had some great community contributions to share too, a couple are leftovers from last month as there wasn’t space, so it was great to be able to include them this month.
The other piece of great news is our print / distribution numbers have increased again to 4,200, an increase of another 200 copies. This of course is mainly due to the houses being built in Ravenswood and Pegasus.
It’s certainly a win for all, with advertisers getting a wider reach of readers and community groups raising awareness to more people.
You will see there is a whole page dedicated to The Woodpecker vacancies. We are on the lookout for some help, so if you are able to help and have some time, we’d love to hear from you. We would also like to have

some more members
on our board too, it’s not onerous and a great team to be a part of, so please do email me if you are interested or want to find out more.
I would like to thank those of you who do provide positive feedback for The Woodpecker; it is always great to hear people find it a great read and why and what they like best. Don’t forget if you ever have a story to tell or want to voice your thoughts or opinions via a ‘letter to the editor’ you are most welcome.
Lastly, as usual, a huge thank you to the team of wonderful volunteers without whom you wouldn’t receive The Woodpecker in your letter box, and thank you to all the advertisers and community contributors and celebrate the bumper 64-page issue this month!

SMA Karate
On a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at Woodend community centre you can see an enthusiastic group of children turning up to take martial arts lessons, with an instructor and student leader getting the class warmed up. But it’s not just about punching and kicking as Sensei Chris Cameron is quick to point out.
Chris offers martial arts lessons to children from 5 years all the way up to adults, one of whom has recently become a grandfather. The classes are split into age groups, starting with fiveto seven-year-olds, followed by youth classes of eight to twelve olds and then a teen and adults’ class. But it isn’t just the class experience that keeps children and their families coming back to SMA Karate.
It’s about the life skill development
and you can see the pride on their faces as they gain recognition for their efforts. There are leadership opportunities and an inclusive family culture. At the Woodend dojo there are many families that have a parent and at least one if not all siblings taking part in classes.
One parent recently observed “it teaches them about failure and effort”. The feedback from a recent survey shows that the aim to instil self-confidence, discipline and focus is definitely working, with parents talking positively about their child’s development.
When asked about why martial arts and why SMA Karate in the words of Sensei Chris Cameron, “Through martial arts and personal life skill development we educate, inspire, and

empower people to develop positive outcomes in themselves, their families, and their communities.
The more people that develop improved confidence, self-esteem, social understanding, and good character traits the better. The flow-on effect is their interactions with those around them, their whanau and peers. Their development and understanding they can pass on to others further expanding the impact we can have.” When a new member signs up at SMA Karate, they don’t just have access to lessons each week at Woodend. There is a member’s website and Facebook page, as well as the social communications in their “Friends of” page. A mobile app that means members can check training videos while on the go, as well as access to the main dojo in Shirley, private
lessons, additional classes such as the weapons classes, and the accessibility if they can’t make it to their regular class to join in at their age group class on another night.
The club has their awards day coming up soon to celebrate the successes of its members in 2023, which by the evidence on the photo wall was a good year. With black belts earnt across the club last year as well as junior members gaining their Master Dragon grading in the five- to seven-year-olds classes.
You can understand why Sensei Chris and his leadership team believe that martial arts offers one of the best youth development skillsets a parent could ask for. Martial arts is more than just a sport –it’s a way of life that can have a lasting impact on a child’s development. By participating in martial arts, kids

can learn valuable life skills such as discipline, respect, and confidence. These skills can help kids to succeed not only in martial arts, but also in school and in other areas of their lives. In addition to the mental benefits, martial arts also provides a great physical workout. Kids will improve their coordination, balance, and overall fitness levels through martial arts training. This can help to reduce the risk of obesity and other health issues and promote a lifelong love of physical activity.
But the benefits of martial arts don’t stop there. It can also be a great way for kids to make new friends and be part of a positive community. Martial arts schools often have a strong sense of camaraderie, where students support and encourage each other to succeed.
Overall, martial arts is an excellent activity for kids to participate in. It can help to improve their physical and mental health and provide them with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in life.
It’s easy to book a trial lesson through the website at www. shizokumartialarts.co.nz/book and with the new term just starting now is a good time to have a go. There are a range of membership options including concession cards. New members are welcome at any time, and you don’t need to have any special gear to start, just a water bottle.

Woodend Bowling Club
In January Bowls New Zealand held the National Pairs and Singles Tournament in the Canterbury area and the Woodend Bowling Club were hosts to three events – women’s pairs, men’s singles, and men’s pairs. All events were held in sunshine and some of the country’s best talent was on show.
Kelleher, with his partner brother Ethan, went on to contest the pairs final against Gary Lawson and Tony Grantham. All three days were enjoyed by both players and spectators.

PRGI COMMUNITY WATCH UPDATE
Late last year, we initiated a recruitment drive to get more volunteer drivers into our PRGI Community Patrol roster. We delivered flyers to every household in Pegasus, put up posters around town, and promoted across our website, on this page and on social media.
A total of 14 people put their hands up to help, with 8 ultimately joining the roster.
Although a smaller number than we were hoping for, we are thankful to those people who have made themselves available. They have helped bolster our roster and as a result, we now have over 40 volunteers in total which means that all Friday and Saturday patrols can now be covered.

Following the conclusion of the initial trial at the lake, PRGI enabled a meeting with the stakeholders to progress next steps.
The stakeholders include Templeton Group, Waimakariri DC, Ecan, Te Kohaka o Tuhaitara Trust, WoodendSefton Community Board, and PRGI.
Following this, a group of technical experts met in late December to talk through the options moving forward.
We're currently waiting to hear about the chosen direction. Rest assured; we'll pass on any updates to you as soon as we have them.

LEAP YEAR - 29 FEBRUARY funny facts
Did you know?
Why is there an extra day in a leap year?
The intercalary day that usually occurs every four years is called the leap day and is created by adding an extra day to February. This day is added to the calendar in leap years as a corrective measure because the Earth does not orbit the Sun in precisely 365 days.
Which Kiwi Celebrities celebrated their birthday on 29 February?
Do you know anyone born on 29 February?
Some celebrities in NZ have their birthdays on this day.
Well-known Kiwis with leap day birthdays include Wellington composer Gareth Farr (1968) and former Warrior player Clinton Toopi, (1980).

Seiko-Kai NZ Karate Team Grade in Japan
Members of Seiko-Kai Karate club travelled to Shin-Kiowa, Japan for black belt grading examinations under the watchful eye of legendary grandmaster (Soke) Suzuki Seiko at the So-Honbu Dojo (Headquarters).
The Team have been training extensively over the past year, under the guidance of 7th Dan Chief Instructor Kev Merriman at their home dojo in Kaiapoi who said.
“It takes a minimum five years of dedication, commitment and personal sacrifice before being eligible to take a Dan grade (black belt).
practice sessions averaged five hours in local parks and at the So-Honbu Dojo and consisted of intensive training and refining movements and making minor improvements to techniques. Each team member had to perform individually in front of a panel grading leaving no room for error. However, the Teams preparations would pay dividends with all of them passing. Those graded to 1st Dan included:
Holly Taw (Jnr. Shodan), Ruby Wilson (Senior Shodan), Jake Dale and Christopher Flannagan.
This past year I have watched this group grow individually and as a collective as the trip grew closer.I have witnessed incredible spirit and passion from each of them and it was an honour to travel with them to Japan to see them grade under Suzuki Soke”. In Japan the training would intensify in the buildup to the grading day with focus upon performance delivery and the most critical elements that defines Seiko-Kai as it’s own style. Daily
Taking 2nd Dan: Liam Visker (Jnr. Nidan) and Elizabeth Whittington. Sensei Dan Visker secured the rare landmark of 3rd Dan (Shodan).
“It was just brilliant to watch them perform and see them all pass. Ruby and Dan had both suffered illness, but both showed that indominable spirit synonymous with Karate”.
“Obviously, I am delighted for each of them, and it is great news for our Dojo, but I am particularly proud of my Dojo partner Dan Visker Sensei who for most part has had to sacrifice his own training to teach regular classes, so
Page 24 The Woodpecker March 2024
credit to him for going the extra mile”. “They have come to understand the importance of training in the spiritual home of Karate under the guidance of our revered Suzuki Soke. I am confident it is now a memory they will cherish for life, and I hope they will follow the 5th tenant of our student creed which is: - Karate is a Lifetime Study and they all go on to do greater things with the art”.

Woodend - Sefton Community Board
Woodend Bypass and SH1
It has been another bad summer in this area on State Highway 1 (SH1) with several accidents. The build-up of traffic is also very noticeable. We are often asked what is happening with safety and also with the Woodend Bypass. These both sit with NZTA – Waka Kotahi as they are SH1.
The Board is looking forward to the release of the draft Government Policy Statement on land transport as the Woodend Bypass is considered a road of national significance. This is being written now, so it is a case of wait and see. We will continue to advocate for the Woodend Bypass , for some safety improvements in the interim, and around safety concerns between Waikuku and Saltwater Creek and help keep you informed.

What’s been happening
• A grant of $500 was approved for the Pegasus Dragons to enter a team in the Wellington Dragonboat Festival.
• Consultation will be underway soon on a community driven plan for a beach volleyball court at Waikuku Beach on reserve land. Please keep a look out at https://letstalk.waimakariri.govt.nz/ . We are interested to find out what you think.
Long-Term Plan (LTP) 2024-2034 consultation
The Council will be releasing the draft LTP which has what is planned over the next 1o years and how its activities and services will be funded, including by rates and fees. Public consultation of the draft long-term plan is planned to run from midMarch to mid-April. Drop-in sessions are planned. Full information will be available at https://letstalk.waimakariri.govt.nz/ .

Dear Community Readers
Welcome back to Wooden School for the 2024 year.
Mihi Whakatau
On Friday 16 February we held our mihi whakatau to welcome all our new
students and their families to Te Kura Tuatahi O Pakiaka/Woodend School. Congratulations to our 2024 student leaders- Carly K, Finley T, Indi R, Keava M, Pearl G, Ruby F, Sam W, Tess H, & Tyler R. Our students took part in a leadership camp on Saturday 3rd & 4th February with a focus on building leadership skills and knowledge and taking part in team building activities. Our student leaders were invited to be a part of the Waiora Links Community Trust meeting last week. Our student leaders were introduced to all the attendees and discussed their leadership goals for the year and journey to be a leader at Woodend School. We then listened to a presentation from the Waimakariri District Council about the current review of the Northern Pegasus Bay Bylaw- regarding protecting our beaches, estuaries, and wildlife.
Woodend School
Learning themes
Our School-wide focus for learning in term 1 is all about the history of Aotearoa - New Zealand. Students will gain knowledge and understanding about the stories of Woodend, our cultural narrative and how they are unique. Later in the term our learning focus will move into KaitiakitangaGuardian and protector of our planet, a superhero of the environment, fighting for the rights of nature and defending our precious resources with heart and courage. Students will focus on science - the nature of science and the living world strands, and Social Sciences - Interactions change societies and place and environment.
Vision (the why): Learning 4 Life
To develop the O Tatou Pou which allows learners to act positively on their own authority, with mana. To engage learners in the ongoing pursuit of learning, as they progress throughout their life.
To equip students with resilience which will enable them to succeed in the future.
Mission (the how): Build a collaborative learning community through positive relationships; ‘learning 4 life’ together. Our community values positive relationships as the foundation of all learning. Utilising each other in positive ways throughout the learning process (tuakana-teina), both as
Page 38 The Woodpecker March 2024
learners ourselves and as teachers (ako).
Developing self-regulated learners who know their learning goals, their next learning steps and can reflect on the learning process. Knowing ourselves as learners, how we learn best and seeking challenges to ensure we are the best we can be.
Te Ngahere (Year 5-6) Surf Trip
Te Ngahere Year 5-6 students were lucky enough to have the opportunity to go surfing at Pegasus Beach on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 February with the team from surfcoach nz. Our students learnt from the coaches about the beach, the ocean conditions and how to surf using a surfboard or boogie board.

After our hugely successful community hangi in 2019 the Woodend Community Association would like to run a ‘Community cultural and hangi day’ to be held at Woodend School on Friday 12 April. It has not been possible to bring our community together due to many years of covid uncertainty. We envisage this running as it was in 2019 as a community day, where the invitation to attend would be extended to all students, whānau and all our wider community. The children will be involved in all aspects of the organisation for our hangi including vegetable preparation and digging the pit. During the week leading up to the hangi students will also be provided with a range of learning opportunities to learn about the Kaiapoi pā and how this was a significant trading area traditionally. There will also be tikanga (cultural) activities as well as kapahaka, choir and jump jam performances.
Kaiapoi High and students from Te Pa o Rakaihauto will be involved

through Kahui Ako connections. After eating, there is time for all members of the community to interact with each other, giving a wider sense of community.
For us to run this event with a growing school roll of over 470, we are asking for donations or sponsorship so that we can provide the food. These donations could be either monetary or by donating bulk produce. Please let us know if you are able to help us with this.

A therapeutic choir making a difference for people with neurological conditions.
New Therapy Group in North Canterbury choir.
Communication is a vital part of all our lives and talking is generally our main form of communication.
Cantabrainers Choir aims to help men and women who have lost some communication skills to use their voice again to communicate to the best of their abilities.
These changes can be due to a stroke, a disease such as Parkinsons or one of many different neurological conditions. There is no need to know how to sing or to read music. Most of our members have never sung in a choir before. Being in pitch or in tune is not a requirement. We are not a community choir but a therapeutic, neurological
Music and speech share many characteristics: pitch, rhythm, tone, pace, and volume, this is why the Cantabrainers Choir is run and co-led by a Registered Music Therapist (May Clulee - Southern Music Therapy) and a Registered Speech Language Therapist. (Angela Reimer STAR). Both with experience in neurological therapies.
Following on from the success of the Christchurch choir (est 2012) we are now running a choir in Woodend. This meets weekly on a Tuesday afternoon.
Anyone in the North Canterbury area is very welcome to contact us to see if the Choir is a good therapeutic fit for them or their whanau.

FENZ - Woodend Fire Brigade Update
I would imagine by now, that most of our community know that we have been attending major scrub / bush fires, traumatic Motor Vehicle Accidents, Structure Fires and Medical Calls, but, did you know that is not the only calls we have.
Over the years (the writer has now been in the Brigade for 21 years), we have had all manner of calls – ranging from animal rescues, flooding calls, water rescues (yes, we do have life jackets at the ready) calls to assist police, children who have locked themselves in toilets / bathrooms – we’ve done them all!
I thought I would mention one we had recently.
We have duty crews on Sunday Mornings where we can be found checking that all our appliances, big and small, are running properly and we have a clean-up of the Station. About a month ago, we had Paulette call into the Station, looking very distressed with a painful expression on her face. On enquiring what we could do to help, she told us she had been helping to rescue two horses up at the recent Loburn fire. One horse had reared, and her hand was wrenched as she was holding onto the halter. (She found out later that this had caused a spiral fracture in her finger).
Not giving it too much thought, she continued into Christchurch for something she had to attend, on what was a sweltering hot day. Her injured hand / fingers subsequently swelled up, one finger especially which had a ring on it – and it was definitely not going to come off without some intervention. On the way home, she had called in to a number of places to see if they had anything that could cut the offending
Page 46 The Woodpecker March 2024
ring off, but to no avail until finally stopping off at our Station.
It just so happened that we had a ring cutter in our medical kit, and we were able to cut the ring off and give her finger some relief, because by now the finger was a very bright purple and she was in extreme pain.
Not something we are called upon to do often, but it wasn’t the first time!
A very grateful Paulette called into the Station a month later to donate some goodies to the members – thank you very much – always great to hear of a successful outcome.

Starting at 10am
Cuppa
in the Communi-tea is pleased to announce their next morning tea. We will have a very interesting guest speaking to us about the History of Woodend and a tour around the cemetery to view the graves of some of the early families from our district. These families are the people who started our community and help form Woodend as we know it now. The history of Ravenswood is very interesting and helps us understand a little of our history.

St Barnabas Church - FEBRUARY UPDATE
How privileged we are to be entering another year. May you be met with love, understanding and mountains of peace in 2024.
May God bless all the staff and pupils heading back to school. We are holding you all in prayer - particularly those who are anxious about returning. We have enjoyed a great summer at St Barnabas. New friends have been showing up weekly. A lot of us are feeling God’s gentle invitation back to community in this season — come as you are, you are welcome.
There are great plans afoot to accommodate our growing group at St Bs - the car park situation isn’t feasible with the two services so close together, so the decision has been made to move our second service to 4pm followed by kai at 5pm. This commences 11 February with a special visit from Bishop Peter Carrell. We are adding a small children’s program to the 9.30am service (this is
a first for this decade!) as the number of young families at this time slot has increased. We are so excited to introduce our freshly employed youth and children minister Nadia Fox — a Woodend local with a passion for helping kids know Jesus’ love for them! We have also seen a need for community for the more mature and we are partnering with Anglican Care to offer Elder Care Groups on Mondays from 1–3.30pm in term time — this group offers friendship, help and support for people over 65. Our wonderful Sue Rutter will be heading this up. There’ll be gentle exercise and activities, fun, friendship, personal support, afternoon tea, practical advice and information on healthy living — all for just a $3 donation. Transport can also be arranged.
A lot of our Music and Play leaders will be sending their own ‘babies’ off

St Barnabas Church MARCH UPDATE
We have enjoyed a great summer at St. Barnabas and new friends have been showing up weekly. A lot of us are feeling God’s gentle invitation back to community in this season: Come as you are — you are welcome.
3 Highlights from February
A wonderful, combined church Ash Wednesday service to kick off Lent with Pastors Scottie and Leanne Young from Grace Vineyard Church. Bishop Peter Carrell officiated a surprise graduation for Andrew Clark (one of our leaders) at our 4.00pm service, after having completed his Bachelor of Theology degree. Getting to be with awesome neighbours through the various spaces on offer.
Time change
To ease car park congestion we have
moved our second service from 11.00am to a new time of 4.00pm followed by a ‘bring-a-plate-of-fingerfood’ kai.
Primary-age children in your household?
Our freshly employed youth and children minister, Nadia Fox, is a

Woodend local passionate about helping young people grow strong and secure and knowing that they are loved by Jesus. She runs a program for under 12s at our Sunday 9.30am and 4.00pm services.
Teens looking to belong?
Every third Sunday we have a special group for teens during our 4.00pm service run by Rev. Sammy Mould who is the Youth Coordinator for Canterbury.
Retired and looking for community?
We are partnering with Anglican Care to offer Elder Care Groups on Mondays from 1–3.30pm in term time. This group offers friendship,
and it is so good to see our families back after the summer! There is plenty of space in the Wednesday group if you have children who prefer a quieter space — Friday is pretty pumping! This really is a great space for our babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers to enjoy some music, have some kai and play with others while their carers engage, chat and enjoy good food and great company. No charge.
Need Prayer?
Daily prayer is at 5.00pm on weekdays. Come be still and know God. Also, feel free to message the church via the website or Facebook with any specific prayer requests.
help and support for people over 65. Coordinated by the wonderful Sue Rutter, there will be gentle exercise and activities, fun, friendship, personal support, afternoon tea, practical advice, and information on healthy living — all for just a $3 donation. Transport can also be arranged.
Caring for preschoolers?
Music and Play have started off with a bang
Finding things a bit tight?
The ever-popular Free Food on Friday at Four continues to meet a growing need in our neighbourhood. What a great bunch of people show up and lovingly share the weekly bounty we receive from Satisfy Food Rescue. It’s a great vibe but be there early — it goes fast! May you know more and more the immense love and care your creator has for you. With love from St. Barnabas Church.

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust Update
Nau mai haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust!
As we approach planting season, we have secured funding for additional plants to enhance Tūhaitara Coastal Park further.
If you’re passionate about helping the environment or the local community, express your interest in our upcoming planting days under the Planting Days tab on our website.
As usual, there will be a BBQ at all our planting day events as a thank you from Papatūānuku and us for giving back to our environment, which provides for and looks after us daily.

go around again! There is always work to do around here, so we have been extremely grateful for our summer staff, who lent a hand over the sunny season.
The education sector is also in full swing as the new school year advances.
Mikaela has broadened her role within the trust and stepped into our Education Ranger position. Having obtained a bachelor’s degree in biological and environmental science, she has accumulated knowledge and a deep passion for being a voice for plants and animals.

Summertime calls for copious amounts of maintenance. In the park, you’ll likely see Rex on the mower and Deane and Murray maintaining the tracks and biota nodes with the brush cutters. They have reached the end of the biota node rounds, which means it’s time to
Mikaela wants to share this knowledge and aroha for nature with the Tamariki to help lead a lasting impact, fostering a sense of kaitiakitanga, allowing the Tamariki to connect deeper with the environment around them and understand all its interconnected beauty. New school groups will learn about various ecosystems and species while actively contributing to creating a thriving indigenous plant corridor. From identifying native flora and fauna to understanding the lifecycle of vital species like Tuna, Kōwaro, and lizards, each lesson is a step toward becoming true kaitiaki, guardians of

For others who are interested in finding out more about these concepts, come into the park and have a kōrero with Mikaela or tune in to the local radio station Compass FM to listen to the monthly kōrero, covering similar topics to help spread awareness knowledge and aroha to show why we should all be kaitiaki of the environment.

Mayor Dan Gordon Update
By now most of you will be aware that the previous government’s proposed Three waters reform has been repealed by the new government. As the co-chair of Communities 4 Local Democracy (C4LD), I am really delighted by this news, it is what we lobbied for.
I will continue to support localisation over centralisation when it comes to decisions around our assets. I know from the overwhelming feedback from our community that the vast majority of you feel the same way. C4LD put forward a community-led, common-sense alternative for water reform that sees higher standards delivered throughout the country while making sure local communities have control and say over their assets. We welcome working with the new government on this model.
Not only keeping the residents in this District safe, but also working hard to contain the fires in neighbouring Hurunui and Christchurch City. It has been a busy fire season and I know all of the crews who have been working on the Port Hills and Waikari Valley are certainly tired. Let’s all remember to do our bit and
ensure not to partake in any activity which has the potential to start a fire. Remember Canterbury is in a prohibited fire season.
I am continuing to meet with residents who were affected by the recent Loburn fires. It is still a very difficult time for them.
I would also like to acknowledge the integral support of our local MP’s Matt Doocey and Stuart Smith on this issue as well as working closely with neighbouring North Canterbury Mayors Marie Black and Craig Mackle. This summer has been one for the books, but the downside of a hot, dry summer is fires.
I’d just like to acknowledge the tremendous work done by the fire brigades in the Waimakariri District.
Recently I had the honour of officially opening Copper Beech Road in Woodend. The road is part of Copper Beech Estate. It’s fantastic to see it open and that the connection fully complete.
I also attended the memorial of the Canterbury Earthquakes last week and laid a wreath on behalf the District. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 13 years since that fateful day where 185 people lost their lives. But they will be forever remembered in the hearts of all Cantabrians.
