Produced for the community, by the community

LEST WE FORGET

At the going down of the sun, the Woodend Community, we did remember them. Woodend Community came together at dusk on the 24th April to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who served for our country. The hall was packed to overflowing with those who came to remember. Addresses were given by Mayor Dan Gordon and Matt Doocey MP, followed by Kaiapoi High School Head students Ariana Roberts and Lucy Paterson, both whom are Woodend residents. Most of the speakers shared a little of their own family’s experience of war as well as acknowledging those

affected by war in current overseas conflicts. The Woodend School kapa haka groups gave lively performances and delighted the crowd. Woodend School head students Indi Retallick and Tess Hallmark read the poem “In Flanders Field”, and Pam Harvey from the Amberley Lions also gave an address. The Roll of Honour was read, the Last Post and a bagpipe tribute was played and wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph under the full moon. It was a fitting community tribute to honour those who fought for us to have peace.

Thanks to the Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus for hosting the event.

Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou

It’s pleasing to see the great weather continues to give with amazing autumn blue sky sunny days, long may they continue.

We are looking forward to our AGM on 15 May and pleased to confirm we’ve had two nominations for board members who will be elected at our meeting. You will also see we are continuing to expand our team of volunteers to keep up with the growth of our distribution and delivery areas, so if you are interested in working with our charity, please do get in touch. Every month when all the adverts and community contributions come in via email and I’m putting them in the InDesign template after 25th deadline ready for the printer deadline of 27th, it always amazes me how exciting the process is. It always seems to come together with a great 50 / 50 balance of community and advertising. This month it’s always poignant to feature the Anzac events and to hear of the increasing turnout every year; so important to remember.

doubled also due to Ravenswood as well as Woodend and Pegasus. Not to mention of course we were monochrome and now full colour, which I’m sure you agree is much nicer, especially featuring community groups photos!

Interest from further afield continues to benefit businesses and groups; the digital copy being featured widely on Facebook community groups has assisted with this.

As I read through the finalised copy for the last ‘final-final’ check before sending to the printers, I am always amazed at what is in and around are community and how lucky we are!

On behalf of all our governance board members, and we are volunteers too, and our amazing team of volunteers who arrange the distribution and delivery each month – thank you for your support and making our jobs so worthwhile.

In July I’ll have been carrying out the Editor role for seven years! Where has the time gone? The average pagination size was 31 pages and now it’s 49 pages! Our distribution has more than

The Woodpecker ‘produced by the community for the community’.

The end of an era - Goodbye Flat White Café

The last week in April marked the end of an era with the closing of Flat White Café. Roll back to 2009 when I was approached to set up the Bunker Bar food and beverage operation at the Pegasus Golf Club.

With 12 weeks before the November opening day this project became my sole focus to ensure an on-time delivery.

Continuing to oversee the Bunker Bar I also managed Flat White Café for three years.

During this time, I watched Pegasus grow from bare land into a new residential community with people coming in to live the lifestyle offered by Pegasus Town - the beach, the lake, and the park surrounds. Time to establish new friends and enjoy the area.

Infinity Group’s Bob Robinson was the instigator of Pegasus Town. Many of you will know that his vison went well beyond what you see today.

I remember the impact of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes on Christchurch and Canterbury which saw a significant lift to the residential numbers of Pegasus. Consequently, the coffee roastery was removed and a second bar / coffee machine installed on the expanded floor area.

February 2013 - I purchased the café business from Infinity group as financial pressures forced a sale of the development – a very smooth take over as I had managed both the golf club and cafe up to this time – helped by the previous decade spent in the liquor industry.

My passion is for food and creating fresh cuisine. Flat White has been a fabulous venue for that and for me, Flat White has always been about hospitality within a community.

Over the years we have hosted many and varied events – celebrating birthdays, wedding anniversaries, wine clubs, residents’ nights and even a few New Year’s Eve parties in the earlier years, along with some themed dinners. (Anyone remember the Mexican night?).

The cafe was a community hub open to all. Meetings, business presentations, book clubs, fundraising events, mahjong playing, walking groups, cyclists’ gatherings as well as being a place to meet people and “have a coffee” and a chat.

I celebrate this journey to create Flat

Page 12 The Woodpecker May 2024

White and to serve the community alongside a team of amazing staff. When I took over in February 2013, I had 13 staff to continue the café with. During my 15-year tenure I have employed 112 staff with many returning to work for me – sometimes more than once.

Leading on from my early teaching career, it has given me great joy and satisfaction seeing staff grow from a nervous interview, learning new skills as they trained, gaining life experience and skills as they expand their hospitality knowledge. We certainly have many great memories and stories to share - a few come to mind:

The many events Pegasus Town has held.

Making hot drinks for those in the snow.

Coffees made for the volunteers. fire brigade, surf lifesavers, community groups.

The COVID days and the support the

community gave us when we were only able to operate a take-away service out the windows. Our ‘regulars’ – so much so that we often knew the coffee choice before the name!

A big thanks to the park run teams who have supported us each Saturday morning after their run around the lake.

My love of cuisine and supporting communities and the people will continue at Urban Revival in Silverstream.

Now I would like to say a huge thanks to you all. It truly has been an incredible journey.

Perhaps you have an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours.

Communi-tea Cuppa

Free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus, and surrounding area.

10am first Tuesday of the month at St Barnabas Church Hall, Woodend.

Shona Powell, Woodend – Sefton Community Board, was our guest speaker at our April morning tea. Shona was invited to talk about the Woodend bypass and the Waimakariri District Council long term plan. People who have lived for many years in Woodend know about the delays in building the bypass road, however there is hope now that it may go ahead. The discussion led

to the problems for both vehicles and pedestrians at the Pegasus roundabout. Shona continues to work hard to present these issues to Waka Kotahi on our behalf. The long-term plan also bought about an interesting discussion. However, I feel we can be grateful that while Waimakariri rates have historically been higher than most, it seems the Council has kept up maintenance and replacement of infrastructure and now our rates increase will be lower than many Councils.

Thanks to our sponsors Joes Garage, The Coffee Club and St Barnabas Church.

For your diary:

7 May: Mandy Palmer, Timebank Coordinator.

11 June: Judith Schumacher, speaker from the Council about rates rebates. (Note a week later).

Thank you Te Puna Tahua!

Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to give a BIG shout out to Te Puna Tahua, the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, for continuing to support youth mentoring in North Canterbury! Did you know?

Did you know that whilst our service is free to families in need, it costs over $2,000 a year to match just one vulnerable child in the community with a ‘Big Brother’ or ‘Big Sister’?

Local Woodend mentor Caitlin, pictured with her ‘Little Sister’ Aroha, are pretty stoked that some of the profits made from New Zealand state lotteries will help to make more lifechanging friendships - just like theirs - in North Canterbury!

Thank you Te Puna Tahua, we couldn’t do what we do without your support!

Guess what?

Pegasus parkrun is on a roll! In the first three months of 2023, we were averaging 160 participants. This year, that number has galloped up to 180, just like our namesake, Pegasus! Our average finish time is dropping too – this is exactly what we want because it means we are being joined by more walkers each week. And as we all know, walking is just the baby steps of jogging, which leads to a healthier lifestyle. We’ve also had a new parkrun start in CanterburyScarborough parkrun in Sumner has joined the ranks of Hagley parkrun, Foster parkrun (Rolleston), and Broad Park parkrun (Waimari Beach). This is fantastic news, especially considering

that Hagley has been drawing a crowd of around 700 participants for the previous few weeks. Think parkrun is only for the fit and the fast?

Take a closer look and you might be surprised by what you find. The parkrun concept is simple: a free, timed, weekly 5k run, organised, and managed by local volunteers, open to runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages. parkrun appeals to people for many different reasons. Some are motivated to maintain physical fitness or to train for competitive events. Others like to chase targets and collect the t-shirts that mark significant milestones, such as 50, 100, 250, or 500 runs, or volunteer roles.

The big news in April was that Jackie Hancock became the 3rd local parkrunner to join the volunteer 250 club. That’s quite an achievement,

Page 22 The Woodpecker May 2024

considering that at the time of writing, Pegasus parkrun has hosted 374 events.

You can bring the kids, the dog, push a buggy, have a chat, look at the scenery, volunteer, and simply enjoy what is going on around you. You don’t have to know anybody either – simply turn up to Motu Quay at 7:50am on a Saturday and join the crowd. You can go at your own pace. Nobody gets left behind and you will get the same cheer whether you are first or last, as parkrun is all about participation.

Many find that parkrun helps them to meet new people or feel connected to their community. Many enjoy volunteering almost as much as

participating in the runs. Participants are encouraged to meet for coffee and a chat at a local café after the runs. This is about social interaction, and meeting different people who are all brought together by getting exercise. In May we have a themed event for Star Wars Day, so keep an eye out for light sabers around the Lake!

If you feel like you might be interested, perhaps check out our Facebook page for photos to give you an idea of what it’s like? Search for ‘Pegasus parkrun’ or visit parkrun.co.nz/Pegasus to learn more. So, are you ready to join the Pegasus parkrun family? We can’t wait to see you there!

St Barnabas Church Update

Wow, back to school again! We hope it was a safe holiday for you and yours and there were some wonderfully slow, boring, dull moments with those young people you know and love. It’s sometimes in these mundane moments that we are filled with gratefulness for one another. Other times it can be a little punishing – let’s be honest!

We care about you. God cares about you.

Ways we have tried to show our love in practical ways here at St Barnabas lately are as follows: If stuff is hard (or great!) what do you have to lose by walking into the church at 5 pm on a weekday evening to some great people who will sit with you and ask God to take care of it for you?

We have nice flags now to show when prayer is on. They say ‘Prayer’ – have you seen them? Come in and say you’ve spotted them, and we will give you short-dated chocolate. This tasty short-dated chocolate comes from our Free Food Fridays, in conjunction with various awesome agencies including Satisfy Food Rescue (shout out). This Free Food Friday starts at 4pm – though the car park does fill up from 3.45pm. We love throwing free food to anyone and everyone. You don’t have to prove anything or dig out your daggiest clothes – just show up and receive. No questions asked.

Speaking of showing up… Sundays 9.30am or 4pm join a bunch of people wanting to live life Jesus’ way. It’s good. We also have a pretty fantastic team available to lead your kids towards the One who will make them want to be nicer humans too. There are a bunch of super cute teeny tiny humans who come on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10am to watch some adults dance and make fools of themselves at Music and Play. They love it. Come along and relax with people who are also too tired to hold a decent conversation. Decent conversation is a beautiful thing – especially if your life now has fewer people buzzing around in it. Our eldercare group rocks out on Mondays at 1.30pm in the church. There are also great small groups happening that you can belong in – a bunch of guys meet around a bonfire in Sefton, a group meets to study the bible in Woodend on Wednesday mornings, people curious about the Christian faith meet and ask the big questions midweek in Rangiora, and coming up there will be a 6-week course on contemplative prayer in Pegasus. Basically, come as you are, you belong here, and we want to help you connect with the God who loves you. Message us on Facebook or via our flash new website www. stbarnabaswoodend.org.

Woodend - Sefton Community Board

This will be a great addition to the area and complement the existing play spaces. Please keep out until it is opened as it is a work site.

What’s been happening

Exciting new playground taking shape in Woodend

Contractors are hard at work constructing the new playground in Woodlands Estate Reserve on Parsonage Road. The play space will include public toilets, water fountain, seating, play equipment, table tennis table, mini learn to ride track and a kick a ball space.

Concept plan shown

• A grant of $1,000 was approved to the Woodend Community Association towards hosting a Community Cultural and Hangi day

• Board members were honoured to join with hundreds of locals attending ANZAC services in the area at Woodend, Sefton and Pegasus. These services are all very family friendly and we hope to see you there next year.

• The Board lodged submissions to the draft Long -Term Plans for both Waimakariri District Council and Environment Canterbury. It is planned to present those submissions at the hearings to be held in May.

Our next meeting – all are welcome

Monday 13 May starting at 5.30pm at Woodend Community Centre.

Things have slowed down at the shed over the last couple of weeks. We do not have too many pending jobs up on our whiteboard. So if you have anything you would like us to take a look at please bring it down to the shed on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm or come and join us for a cuppa at 11.00am. Also, if you are considering joining our little band of brothers come along and check us out. Most of our members come from the Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and Waikuku areas.

In recent months we have helped with furniture repairs and have built new items for specific requirements , for example a Tortoise House. We have had donated to us some older good quality furniture which has been renovated and sold on for funds, along with some great furniture of our own built by the shed. We are also equipped for some steel work and engineering. I n general we do not do electrical work except for repairing little things like lamp fittings. One of our guys makes large size outdoor Yahtzee dice and another is a bit of a wizz on wooden toys. We have a small stock of cutting boards and some corrugated and wooden planter boxes. Also a couple of our blokes are keen wood-turners

At the Menzshed our priority is community work which we generally do for the cost of materials only. Our second priority is work for paying customers who want us to help them out with a project or a job. In this case we charge the material cost plus a modest amount for labour as a fund raiser. Our guys also work on personal projects, so there is always a lot going on down at our shed at Gladstone Park (across the driveway from the rugby club).

We are keen to receive donations of materials , tools and equipment, and quality-tired furniture (indoor and outdoor) for refurbishment. There is a limit to what we can take because of limited storage space, but before you take it to the dump give us a call, we might be interested. Please n ote that we generally sell refurbished furniture and sell surplus tools and equipment. All of this money is used for shed funds

We try to be active in the community. You may have seen us in recent months at the Picnic on the Lake and assisting with the establishment of the Fairy Forest (the sign was a shed creation).

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

I hope you all managed to commemorate ANZAC Day this year. As Mayor I am honoured to attend and speak at a number of different services held around our District to commemorate those brave young men and women who sacrificed so much so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have today.

and although in those days it was very rarely discussed, those years had taken a terrible toll on his wellbeing.

My Grandfather was a prominent and dear figure in my life.

A particularly poignant moment for me is being at Pegasus Lake and listening to the RSA Chaplain Bill Peck play his bugle across the lake – there is nothing quite like that sound, it’s very special. I also enjoyed attending the commemoration in Woodend on the eve of ANZAC Day.

At this time, I think about how war has shaped my own family.

I think of my great grandfather who was a member of the North Canterbury Mounted Rifles who fought in the Great War more than 100 years ago.

I think also of my grandfather, who left this very District, leaving behind his wife and parents.

That young man went on to spend four years in a prisoner of war in Europe and North Africa.

I can only imagine the horrors he must have endured.

I’m sure his very being only sustained by the hope that he would one day return home and be reunited with his family.

I know at the end of the war his return home to normal life was difficult

He is someone I came to respect even more, years after his death when I learned more about the devastation of war and what he had experienced. It’s important now and always to remember our service men and women, those who have passed and those who are serving in current conflicts. We honour them by showing tolerance of our differences and embracing compassion and understanding.

As always, I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437.

I’m here to help.

The Lions of Woodend Pegasus

I am writing this after having had the privilege of reading out the role of Honour at the Woodend ANZAC Memorial Service. This service has been run on the eve of ANZAC day every year (apart from the COVID-19 years) since the War Memorial was constructed in 2019. This year we had over 300 people attending. The War Memorial project itself was funded by the Woodend Lions in 2017 when it was realised Woodend had no memorial to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on the field of battle to ensure the freedoms we have today.

Before reading the role of honour I asked those present to also remember those who came home, very different people. I am sure many of us will have friends or relatives who witnessed unimaginable horrors serving their country that affected them for the rest of their lives, I know I have. Who are Lions?

With over 1.4 million members, we’re the largest service organisation in the world and we’re as dedicated to helping those in need today as we were over 100 years ago when we first began.

The Lions Club of Woodend (now The Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus) exists to Serve our Community.

Woodend Play Centre

Another project we are proud to support is the Woodend Play Centre which was faced with the prospect of shutting down if they did not get the fence replaced. Woodend Play Centre approached Woodend Pegasus Lions for support in raising a large sum of money to replace the fence and the woodchip in the play area.

Woodend Pegasus Lions was able to get funding through Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust and are pleased to report that the fence has now been replaced and the woodchip will be replaced soon.

We have a social evening on the third Thursday of every month in either Good Home Pegasus or Woodend Tavern where we discuss our upcoming projects and have a laugh. We would love to invite you along.

A little-known fact about Lions Clubs is that every dollar that we raise for good causes goes back to the community, we take nothing. Some welcome news from the Woodend Fire Station. We have recently had some of our members upskilling at the Station and going on courses and would like to congratulate firstly Justin Hendtlass on his recent promotion from Qualified Fire Fighter to Senior Fire Fighter – a valuable asset to the Brigade. Also to Karla Manaena and Ryan Haines on completing their Emergency Response Drivers course – look out for them in the big red Fire Engine. As I am writing this article, we received a call for a dog stuck up a tree. How did this happen you may well ask??

With Karla, as previously mentioned completing her driving course, there was no stopping her. Lickety split, she arrived at the Station, hauled on her gear (leaving a mess by her locker – no time to tidy!!) and jumped into the drivers’ seat.

Whilst it might seem like I am making fun of the situation, it’s great to have more drivers on board, especially during the day, when there aren’t many members available (i.e. working outside our area) and it is very much appreciated that they take time out to learn and go on these courses.

We have others’ also completing their bookwork and training for various courses and we wish them all the best for their endeavours over the coming months. Going back to the dog in the

tree, it turns out he was in a dense macrocarpa hedge about six metres up. Ladders were deployed and the frightened and shaking dog was eventually rescued and returned to the grateful owner. Take a look at the photo and see if you can spot him in amongst the hedge. As said in previous articles, as well as fires, motor vehicle accidents and medical calls, we do get called to some other rather unusual situations.

The Friendship Club

The Friendship Club members had a recent excursion which was a trip to the Ohinetahi Gardens, house, and art gallery at Governors Bay.

The original house was built in 1851 and still stands to this day with a few modifications over the years. This garden is divided into a number of areas such as the rose, red, and woodland garden. Each one of these areas has its different type of vegetation.

We set off by bus and managed to get to see the new Rugby Stadium as well

the history of the place as well as some of the features of the garden. This is truly a beautiful place with its gardens and sculptures.

Everywhere you turned you find something of interest from an amphitheatre to a different type of sculpture.

Everybody had brought their lunch so after walking around the gardens people would find a chair and enjoy their food.

It was a lovely way to spend a day in the outdoors in the company of

as the remains of the old Lancaster Park.

We arrived at the gardens via Dyer’s Pass Road.

The head gardener spoke to us about

friends. Even the weather was kind to us. Our bus driver did a splendid job driving the bus.

Keeping our community informed

The Woodpecker Community Trust is a non-profit community publication relying on advertising to meet costs. We appreciate your support and the contributions we receive.

The Woodpecker has been going for over 40 years starting as a 1-page sheet printed on a Gestetner!

Our publication ensures an equal contribution of advertising and community contributions – so a great way for groups to promote what they do and for businesses to be able to promote themselves locally.

The areas The Woodpecker Community Trust delivers to are: Pegasus, Ravenswood, Tuahiwi, Woodend, Waikuku and beach areas –we are currently printing 4,200 copies delivered to your doors!

AND this excludes the digital copy which is uploaded monthly on Issuu. com which includes all the past copies too!

This link is also posted widely onto North Canterbury Facebook groups as well as being shared around local community groups.

If you would like to have a small quantity of Woodpeckers in your café or business, please do let us know. Let’s share the love!

Where can you get The Woodpecker if you’re not in the delivery area?

• Check local Facebook pages and groups

• Request to be on the mailing list for the digital copy

Some say "Just a bit more condition for winter to keep them warm”, but it has been proven that overweight pets live significantly shorter lives.

Weight control does not always mean changing food to special weight control diets. You can start by regulating how much they eat.

Come and see us at our brand new clinic for a body condition check with one of our nurses or vets.

PAWS..

New clinic, same great service, friendly staff and plenty of parking.
