New Treasurer for The Woodpecker Community Trust

We are pleased to announce we have a new Treasurer on our board - Nicole Graham. This is a voluntary role and so hugely grateful, she like other board members give their time to such an amazing charity. We welcome her to our charity.

Here’s what Nicole has to say. “Hi, I’m Nicole, the newest board member of the Woodpecker Community Trust and appointed Treasurer. Outside of my position on the board I am a wife, mum of three and work full time as a senior accountant and business advisor for a Christchurch based accounting firm. In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with my family, fun fact about me is that I am a huge Disney fan.”

If you’ve got holiday plans and your pet is going for a sleepover at a boarding facility - be mindful that it takes at least 10 days for your pet to respond fully to a vaccination, so it is important that you plan carefully for your pet’s “holiday”, too!

Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou

Isn’t it great to move into daylight savings and see our evenings becoming lighter? This time of year is full of spring colour and whilst the weather is still mixed, the sign of new growth is a great motivator for wonderful weather to come.

It’s been our pleasure to acknowledge and introduce you to our new Treasurer who started with us a couple of months ago. Nicole Graham joins the board of trustees as a volunteer.

Also, again for another month we’ve been thrilled to include some new advertisers to our magazine as well as having contributions from groups and clubs who haven’t previously contributed.

This month you will have see that I’ve included advertising details; however, this is just a short summary. If you are interested in finding out more, please email me and I can send you our information sheet.

Every year for the last five years we have held a Xmas Volunteer Thank You evening for our community contributors and our advertisers as well as all our volunteers, board

members, deliverers, and distributors.

An invitation will once again be extended to all on our mailing list, so if this is you and you are available to come along, we would love to see you there. I regularly acknowledge and thank everyone who emails, texts or tells me how much they enjoy reading The Woodpecker. It’s great to hear that feedback, and a wonderful testament to those who contribute.

I would also love to hear from you if you have any further ideas or suggestions of things you’d like to see in the magazine, space allowing, for example ‘Where does garlic come from?’ or you might have something you could send in that is of interest value. It might be some local historic facts.

I’d love to hear from you.

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust Update

Nau mae haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust

Exciting times are on the horizon for Tūhaitara Coastal Park and its visitors as a new accessible Grade 2 Waimakariri Cycle Trail is set to be established. This significant project is made possible through the dedicated efforts of Visit Waimakariri and Enterprise North Canterbury. This trail promises to enhance the park’s accessibility, contribute to Tūhaitara Coastal Park’s broader community goals, and create an enjoyable experience for cyclists and walkers due to its shared use.

and business groups passionate about preserving indigenous flora and fauna to contact us if you want to adopt and nurture one of the biota nodes within Tūhaitara Coastal Park.

Another exciting thing is the current opportunity to get involved with the biota node project. Biota nodes within Tūhaitara Coastal Park comprisefreshwater holes or areas planted with native flora species that provide berries and nectar for our native birds. The birds naturally propagate native flora, allowing for further establishment and extension of the nodes, gradually connecting them all. The biota node project aims to facilitate natural ecological processes to help rehabilitate Tūhaitara Coastal Park and preserve our indigenous biodiversity for future generations. We invite community, school, whanau,

While on the topic of preserving indigenous biodiversity, Huria Mahinga Kai and Heritage Reserve planting day was another great success that marked the end of our volunteer planting days for the year as temperatures begin to reflect summer approaching. We want to thank all our wonderful volunteers who lent a helping hand to recloak Papatūānuku this year! Plantings will commence again next autumn for anyone interested in coming along. You

St Barnabas Church Update

It was Father’s Day this month and it was great to have a service to celebrate all the fathers who have touched our hearts, whether related by blood or not. Thanks to all the fathers out there!

During our recounting last month of all the things that go on here, we forgot to mention the English Coyuund V+try Dancing which takes place here in our hall every week. And the fact that the hall itself is available for hire! It’s not good to forgot things like that – but it is good to have so many things going on here for us to take part in…

Something we couldn’t forget is that 1 September marked the beginning of spring again. Welcome to the spring, God’s promise of a new world!

The Woodpecker October 2023 Page 9

Ah the first hints of spring are in the air! Nau mai te raumati! Bring on summer!

Spring is a time for new beginnings, growth, and re-birth, with the daffodils blooming and new projects being started. It goes without being said that now is the BEST time to start working on your summer exercise plans. It certainly helps the motivation levels to have on your doorstep a local free, timed 5K walking, jogging, and running event that happens every Saturday. parkrun smiles, words of support and care, cheers and congrats is the norm, a common Saturday morning theme where strangers become friends enjoying the same energetic high when finishing the picturesque 5K course.

Everyone is welcoming and friendly, and it is a no pressure / noncompetitive environment where you can do the 5K at any pace you like. We give a full briefing to explain how it works before the event starts. It’s been an eventful month at Pegasus parkrun. We had 403 finishes at parkrun, that’s whopping 2,015K around Lake Pegasus in August alone. The four Saturday events were supported by 62 volunteer roles. We had national parkrun sponsors The Athletes Foot joining us to provide

foot advice, the North Canterbury Cancer Society join us for Daffodil Day and a celebration for a regular parkrunners 250th event! Well done Rosie Whitham!

Rosie is the 6th parkrunner at Pegasus to join the parkrun 250 club. This is a tremendous achievement – well done Rosie!

Rosie did her first parkrun at Aveley parkrun on the outskirts of Perth back in February 2017. In 2018 she partook in 50 parkruns – that’s an impressive effort. 238 were done here at Pegasus where she is a familiar face with a sunny disposition! Rosie has also volunteered over 50 times. We celebrated two of our four parkrun events in August with cake at the finish line. There are 42 parkruns around Aotearoa, we are proud to note that Pegasus has the highest CTP (cake to parkrun) ratio in the country!

If you are a Pegasus local, you might be interested in knowing that we returned to our signature two-loop course when daylight savings ended late in September. Please do give us a friendly wave if you happen to be around at that time - it really helps to see the community we have from the locals.

Pegasus parkrun happens every Saturday at Motu Quay by the swing

bridge on Lake Pegasus. Everyone is welcome! The first timer briefing is at 7:50am, followed by a run briefing for everyone at 7:55am. Check out Pegasus parkrun on Facebook / Instagram, or visit our web site: parkrun.co.nz/pegasus

Please feel free to join us for entertainment, plant stalls, raffles, speaker, outings and of course, afternoon tea. Visitors are always welcome to come along.

Speaker from September Meeting

We learned about all things Trillium at the September meeting. A local expert outlined the history of the Trillium and the interesting varieties – some of which are quite rare. There are 35-45 species around the world. Generally, seven species with some in four colourways. They like a shady area with a very cold Winter. Christchurch is not cold enough for some varieties! They are acid loving plants that do well under deciduous trees but not evergreen. Trillium will seed readily if happy in their environment and can be grown in pots.

Woodend Spring Flower Show

This was held on Saturday 30 September, 1.00-4.00pm, Woodend Community Hall with this year being the 90th anniversary of the show. The theme was 1930s and was certainly be one to remember.

At the time of writing, schedules were

out with the committee expecting thousands through the door on Saturday 30 September at the Woodend Community Centre. Displays included international daffodil displays, wonderful arrangements and exhibits, stalls, a coffee van, Devonshire teas, children’s exhibits, photography competitions and much more. We hope you enjoyed coming along to see the wonderful show in support of the community.

Exhibit Winners

Jeanie Robinson won out Best in Show with a magnificent decorative arrangement in the theme of Spring Fling. Pam Mason won most of the individual sections. The Club are fortunate to be able to visit Pam’s Garden as one of their outings early 2024.

This month, we would like to introduce you to, and congratulate Rodney Walls on his recent achievements in three Driver Challenges, particularly the National Event held in Fielding in August. Rodney has been in our Brigade now for seven years, deciding to join when he was working at Woodend School as their Property Manager. He knew we were struggling for daytime crewing and felt he could turn out and help during the day. His wife Caro and two girls were very supportive of him doing this, and we thank them as it is a big commitment (family are very important to our Brigade).

Rodney had never considered doing a driver challenge until this year when a flyer came out from the United Fire Brigades Association. Further notice was sent out as a few people had pulled out and there was a vacancy. Rodney decided he would enter at the last minute. The event was run by the Canterbury Provincial Fire

Brigades Association and hosted by Mid Canterbury Fire Brigades Sub Association. There are 10 events run during the day –for example Lane Changing, driving over 45km; Slalom; Serpentine with diminishing lane, first driving forward, then reversing round conesamongst other events. It’s not just driver skill: it’s about being able to think on the run and make snap decisions. All assisted electronic equipment is taken off (i.e. reversing cameras) except the safety equipment. At this challenge there were between 20-24 competitors with most having competed before.

Rodney came away with 1st placed Rookie and 2nd Overall, a great achievement

Having never competed prior to the above event and to give himself a better chance in the National Event - he decided to go to Hokitika for the West Coast Provincial Fire Brigades Association Drivers Challenge, which was held at the local Airport, for more practice. Again, the same events were run, and his overall placing was 3rd in the Open Class.

Page 16 The Woodpecker October 2023

The final event was the National Event held in Fielding at the Manfield Racetrack run over two days on the 25 / 26 August. This is a huge event with lots of Competitors entered – over 100 entries. It is very competitive and very serious; breath testing is done prior to the event, and many fire personnel compete each year. Again 10 events were run over the two days, one being a theory test, along with the practical. We are very proud to announce that Rodney, having never done anything like this before, was placed 2nd Open Rookie (up against around 50 Rookies) and 9th Overall (out of 100+). Very modestly, he said he thought he had done pretty well.

Woodend Methodist Update

Spring is here at last. Such a beautiful time of the year with all the colourful flowers, newborn animals, warmer weather and of course daylight saving giving us the extra hour of daylight to enjoy in the evening. The flower arrangements in both churches are extra special at this time of year. We have our usual weekly services through October including a couple of special ones.

On Sunday 8 October there will a Blessing of the Animals when we take the opportunity to celebrate our pets with a Pets Service while learning more about St Francis of Assissi (The Patron Saint of Animals). You are invited to bring your favourite pet to join our worship service. It is always interesting to see what arrives as a pet. On Sunday 22 October the Worship Team is having a favourite hymn service which is always a good sing of old and new hymns.

A Winters Stroll

15 October Operation Refugee this year has two fund raising projects. The first was the sleepout and the second is a winter walk. Winter / Spring Walk (the goal is walk for 10 kilometres). We plan to walk along the Rakahuri Trail, unless we hear that others would prefer to go to Northbrook, which is a shorter route and on smooth paths. Dogs are not allowed because of the water and other nesting birds. If there are those who would like to walk at Northbrook, then let Margaret know (phone 313 8413) and arrangements will be made and there will be two parallel walks. The plan is to meet in the car park by the BMX track near the

Show Grounds at 1.00pm on Sunday 15 October. Please try to get some sponsors involved, to raise funds for the refugees.

Woodend Movie Afternoon

Wednesday 4 October 2023 – 1pm ‘Shiloh’ - This is a family drama about a young boy who finds a runaway, nameless beagle and becoming friends. He instantly wants to adopt the pooch but unfortunately, the pup already has an owner who is a cruel hunter. Gold coin donation and afternoon tea will be served.

Monthly Combined Service – If you enjoy the old hymns there’s an opportunity to sing them with our friends from the Rangiora Presbyterian Church, as well as the usual components to a service. The next one is on Wednesday 25 October at Trinity Methodist Church, King Street, Rangiora.

Woodend weekly church service is held Sundays at 9am everyone welcome. Our minister is Darryn Hickling phone 022 675 7391. Rangiora Trinity office hours are Tuesday 10 am to 1pm, Wednesday 9.45am to 1.45pm, Thursday 10am to 1pm.

Our office is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3.30pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 4.30pm.

Our recent campaign to recruit new volunteers was a success and our latest cohort is undergoing several weeks of induction training. Towards the end of October, they’ll start working with their mentors in the office, putting theory into practice. We’re delighted to welcome them to our team. No question is too big or too small to bring to CAB.

To give you an idea of some of the questions we deal with on a daily basis, here are some examples.

• What can I do if I think my consumer rights have been breached?

• What kinds of behaviour are considered workplace bullying?

• How can I apply for a protection order?

• Now that I have a Resident Visa, when can I apply to become a permanent resident?

• Can I trim branches from the neighbour’s trees if they are hanging over my boundary?

• What will a building inspector look for when they do a pre-purchase inspection?

• I’ve left my job. Do I have to wait

If you know of someone who needs my help to sell their property, recommend my services and I will thank you with a $500 gift card when the referral turns into an unconditional sale.

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

I had the honour of officially opening Ravenswood Central this month.

It’s wonderful to see some vibrant new hospitality hotspots on offer which I’m sure residents and visitors alike are already enjoying.

Developments like Ravenswood are attracting quality businesses and investment to our District and to this community.

It’s wonderful to have Gull here and we are looking forward to Harvey Norman opening.

There is plenty to be excited about. Ravenswood Central will create new employment opportunities for people in our District as well as enhancing people’s experience and enjoyment of the area through more shopping and dining options.

Thank you to Paul Croft and his team at Ravenswood Retail Ltd who can be very proud of all that has been achieved so far.

I would also like to say a big thank you to those who came along last weekend to help with the replanting of the Waikuku Beach shelterbelt.

Earlier this year the macrocarpa shelterbelt along Park Terrace was removed after consultation with the local community regarding the ongoing maintenance costs of the shelterbelt. We were very fortunate to have the Student Volunteer Army help with the replanting after the bad weather meant they couldn’t travel to Nelson for a scheduled project.

More than 30 members of the Student Volunteer Army joined with members of the community, Council staff and

Ian Fong and Shona Powell from the Woodend Sefton Community Board for the replanting.

This meant more than 1,000 lowgrowing native shrub and tree species were planted in one hour. A tremendous effort.

I was honoured to officially open the Woodend Spring Flower Show on Saturday.

This fantastic event started in 1932 with a group of farmer’s wives wanting to showcase their flowers and produce.

Surviving the war and Great Depression, the show continues the tradition of highlighting beautiful spring flowers in North Canterbury.

The 2010 earthquakes moved the show into Rangiora twice, and in 2015 the Show combined with the National Daffodil Society to bring a joint show to Woodend.

It was a highlight for me as I’m sure it was for all who attended.

I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they may want to discuss.

Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437.

I’m here to help.

Pegasus Town Knitting Group

The Pegasus Town Knitting Group was founded in 2018 by long standing Pegasus resident Lynne Stewart. Initially members knitted projects in their homes for NICU babies using donated wool, most of the yarn donations being received via requests on Facebook. The group expanded during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and once restrictions were lifted, all were keen to meet on a regular basis, finding the Good Home of Pegasus a welcoming base for this venture. These days the group numbers around 25 and members come from

Pegasus, Woodend, Rangiora and even Christchurch City - most are frustrated grandmothers whose family members have outgrown the need for home crafted garments, and all look forward to the social and supportive aspects of the Friday morning Knit and Natter sessions as busy fingers work their magic with a pair of needles. Some members also crochet beautiful items.

Over time the group has been fortunate to receive two particularly large stashes of yarns – not all suited for baby knitting and so to ensure nothing is wasted, the group has expanded their

Page 36 The Woodpecker October 2023

charity project list quite considerably. Some good financial assistance has also been received, and to maintain the ability to purchase suitable wool for NICU babies, members have also turned their hand to fund raising ventures such as selling knitted Barbie doll clothes from Pegasus Main St Store. From time to time the group runs short term projects to meet identified needs such as beanies for the Men’s Shelter, and teddy bears for the Christchurch Hospital Chaplaincy Service. Currently, twiddle muffs are being made to supply Dementia units, or Care units for cancer and neurodiverse or otherwise stressed children - the soft cuddly tubes of varying yarn and stitch textures with added textural embellishments have proved particularly valuable in calming agitated or worried minds. Detailed records of donations have only been kept since December 2021 and from then until now, 2,330 items have been made and delivered to

over a dozen charity organisations. Total items since 2018 is now well over 4,000. That’s a lot of stitches, a lot of yarn, a lot of nattering AND a lot of love gone out from our small community - something the group is very proud of.

There is always a selection of yarns, needles and patterns available to inspire any first timer at each Knit and Natter session, meeting at the Good Home, Fridays 10am - noon. Newcomers are most welcome. Donations of no longer required wool stashes are always eagerly snapped up and much appreciated – pick up can be arranged.

Pegasus Bay School request for bike racks at the Beach

We welcomed pupils from Pegasus Bay School to our last meeting to hear from them about why bike racks at Pegasus Beach are needed, as currently there are none. They had surveyed 396 children and 77 % said they would bike to the beach if there were bike racks. They outlined the reasons why bike racks are needed, including getting physical exercise, being more sustainable, security for bikes, and freeing up car parks during the busy summer period. The Board congratulates the Sustainable Development Goals Student Ambassadors and the pupils for the work they put into their presentation and the points they made about the need. We will work with council staff to see what can be done. It has also highlighted the stands at Waikuku and Woodend Beaches have seen better days.

Planting at Waikuku Beach

A recent chilly Saturday morning saw some Board members help at the planting of natives at Waikuku Beach to replace the macrocarpa hedge removed in April in Park Terrace. With locals, Council staff and the Student Volunteer Army from the University of Canterbury the planting moved quickly. Enjoying a BBQ together was a great way to finish . Some timely rain gave the plants the best possible start. As it grows we look forward to the shelterbelt providing a habitat for native birds and insects.

Two Funding Grants approved

• Woodend Playcentre - $500 toward replacing their fence to keep children safe

• Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade - $500 to purchase lights to decorate the station for Christmas and community events like Halloween to be part of the community

If you would like to see what will be discussed at each meeting check out the Board Facebook page or the agenda at waimakariri.govt.nz/council/meetings/minutes-andagendas/woodend-sefton-community-board around Thursday of the prior week.

NEW WORLD RAVENSWOOD SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY:

With Ronel away for the September Community Cuppa, the bakery staff at New World Ravenswood happily took on the task of baking, supplying and delivering the cake and goodies for our monthly free morning tea event. Apprentice baker, Naomi, did an outstanding job. The results were spectacular with Waiora Links Trustees being surprised and delighted to see the food created in Waiora Links Community Trust colours!

New World is a major sponsor of the Waiora Links Community Trust and they supply the ingredients for Ronel’s baking each month, plus the beverages for the Community Cuppa. We know they are also supportive of many other community projects, including the recent Pegasus Bay Art Show. Not-for-profit groups and events can’t survive without this kind of support, so THANK YOU Justin & the team at New World Ravenswood!

Thanks also to our guest speaker, the irrepressible Lesley Ottey from Eco Educate for an entertaining mix of facts and fun. Our Cuppa attendees learned a lot about what should, shouldn’t and does go into recycling bins. As Lesley said, her work day would make for great reality TV! Lesley also presented the Good Home Pegasus voucher to our lucky winner (photo above)

The 2023-2024 Contest Theme ‘Dare to Dream’

To a young person, a dream isn’t just a wish, hope or desire — it’s a path, a goal, an ambition. But achieving that dream takes hard work. So, this year, we asked young people to show how they’ll turn their dream of a peaceful world into reality.

Four Local Schools submitted 21 entries all by incredibly talented students. Our Club judging took place today and the winner for First Prize is Eshan Raja from Pegasus Bay School.

15 September Peace Poster presentation to Eshan (Woodend Pegasus Club winner) and teacher

Congratulations to Eshan for his magnificent artwork and attention to detail. Eshan is an incredibly talented Artist and musician who in addition to his artistic talent also play the piano and guitar.

We wish him all the very best for the next step of the competition to District Level.

Our District Governor will judge before 15 November. Our District includes the top of the South Island. The District Winner proceeds to Multiple Districts (National) level and from there to International Convention in June 2024. The winner in 2023 was Emma Andreea Paveliuc from Rumania age 13 who was presented with her award at the United Nations in New York.

13 September saw our Cash for Cans Working Bee (Fundraiser for Kidney Kids) Aluminium cans are collected from Waikuku and Pine Acres Holiday Parks. This enables Lions Club

Dear Community Readers

As another busy term closes, we reflect on a very busy and exciting term. Recently our students from Years 3 - 8 performed in an amazing ‘Back to the Woodend Future’

production. It was a huge success, and we are so proud of all our talented performers.

Our Year 5 / 6 students went to Living Springs camp and had a wonderful time trying new activities and challenges. They all came back super excited about the whole experience. On Sunday 15 October we are holding our School Fair and invite all the

community to come along and join in the fun. This year we are fundraising towards a new playground. We are also looking forward to our Woodend School 150th Celebrations next year so put the dates in your

diary, 8 - 10 November 2024.

At the fair there will be a stall where you can register your interest in this upcoming event.

We are experiencing roll growth over most areas of the school and have just started our second new entrant class to enable us to keep our numbers down in these classrooms. If you have a child due to start school this year or

Page 48 The Woodpecker October 2023

next and have not as yet let us know, please go to our website and fill in the pre-enrolment for your child. www.woodend. school.nz This just helps with our planning and predictions for later this year and looking forward into 2024.

Each month the deadline is 25th of the month with a 5pm of deadline sent out to all contributors, advertisers and community contributors as a reminder.

To ensure your space please do send us in your contributions as early as possible where you can as we would hate for you to be disappointed and miss out.

From this deadline date there is a tight turnaround to have the publication ready to go to the printers for them to deliver them to all our deliverers in time for a 1st of the month delivery to your doors. debs.thewoodpecker@outlook.co.nz

The Woodpecker Community Trust thanks all their readers, contributors for their great feedback and supporting our charity over the years.

Slip...Slop...Slap!

We are told this summer will be a bad one for sunburn. It’s not just us, but pets too can suffer from skin damage from the sun. White areas with little hair cover (noses, ears and tummy) in particular can go on to develop skin cancers. Caught early they can be treated, however prevention with a good pet friendly sun block and provision of shade is a good idea.

So remember to be SunSmart with our pets too!
