A huge thank you from the team at Tūhaitara Coastal Park to all the volunteers who came along to our recent planting days. We had a fantastic morning planting the hill on the edge of Te Kohanga Wetlands in Pegasus Town. We also had the Student Volunteer Army from
the University of Canterbury come along to plant 1,200 trees as part of a 1km transect from Tutaepatu Lagoon to the sand dunes. If you are interested, this area can be viewed from the Tutaepatu Trail between Pegasus and Woodend Beach. Con’t’d on Page 23

Kia ora everyone
How fast the year is going. It’s hard to believe it will soon be spring! I am sure you are all feeling the disappointment of us being back to Level 2 again due to the resurgence of COVID-19 in Auckland, but hopefully we will return to Level 1 again very soon. This month I wanted to start with FINDING WOODY! We still haven’t had anyone claiming to have found the little black woodpecker hidden amongst the pages yet! So please join in the fun, involve your children and family and see if you can find him. Remember to send me a photo of you pointing to him on the page and you will have your name and photo shared to all our readers in the next community publication! We have a great opportunity coming up for our advertisers in that we will be inviting expressions of interest for the prime spot of the front page banner for 2021, so watch out for this. Letter to the Editor Congratulations to the Woodpecker! I just collected a June copy of The Woodpecker from St Barnabas Church and was interested to read in your editorial about the beginnings of The Woodpecker. This was the brainchild of my brother Richard Ellena who was teaching music at RHS, myself and our spouses over a bottle of wine one night shortly after we’d moved to Woodend in 1975. (My brother Richard Ellena recently retired as Anglican Bishop of Nelson and resides in Moenui). We thought it would be great to have a community newsletter and The Woopecker was born. Richard was the first editor and I supplied pictures of woodpeckers playing bowls, tennis or whatever was in the news. Yes, it probably was printed on the school gestetner as Jill Creamer (then school secretary) was a tower of strength in the community at that time. The small one pager has developed into an interesting booklet that serves its community well.

CNC major work - SH1 traffic delays
The Christchurch Northern Corridor team will have major work on SH1. During the resurfacing of the existing SH1 Waimakariri Bridge lanes, the Tram Road on-ramp will be closed between 5.30am and 9.30am throughout September. Seven new gantries will be installed over SH1. Starting from 6 September till early October, traffic at night will be reduced to one lane or diverted. Diversion is via Main North Road between Groynes Drive and Ohoka Road. All motorway traffic will be diverted on 30 September. Woodend-Sefton Community Board Projects Underway Exciting news with the Council Greenspace team starting to work with the Board and the wider community to explore options for a youth focussed project for the area. It is early days and it will be shaped by young people in the community. Watch out for opportunities to get involved over the coming months. The carpark off Tiritiri Moana Drive has been completed. This will give a safe place for people to park when cycling or walking along the Tūtaepatu Trail or heading to the beach. What’s Been Happening The Board heard from Council about work planned in the Pegasus area, including addressing some safety issues in Wanaka Reserve. This will include removing the slide, however a new one is on order. The Board were disappointed about the recent theft of the basket swing from Gladstone Park. This is the second time in less than a year that this swing has been stolen. Liz Duke spoke to the Board about her family history on their farm where the Ravenswood residential development now sits. The family planted a significant number of trees which can still be seen in the area, and were very involved in the community. This history helps the Board when it comes to approving the names for streets, walkways and reserves. Woodend Community Association will be seeking funding for two more ‘Welcome to Woodend’ signs they would like to see on Rangiora Woodend Road and SH1, on the north side of the town. The Board has

agreed that south of the Pegasus roundabout is the preferred location for the SH1 sign and that nearby residents will be consulted. This fits well with the desire of the Board to have welcome signs for all the communities in the area. The Board recently agreed to use some of the landscaping budget for a welcome sign at Woodend Beach. Bus Services The change in the 95 route and the new service between Pegasus and Rangiora will start on Monday 28 September. At the time of writing Environment Canterbury have not released the timetables but keep an eye out for them. With the changes the Board have considered the placement of bus stops. Given the new shortened route within Pegasus the best location for a new bus stop on Infinity Drive is still being worked on. A new bus stop is being created in Rangiora Woodend Road and two of the current school bus stops in Woodend Road will also be Metro bus stops for the new service. Pegasus Info Page - September 2020 PEGASUS MAINTENANCE UPDATE The Council has cleared out the dead plants and scrub from the roundabout at the Boulevard and Murfitt Street intersections and replaced this with bark chips. They will look to replant at a later date. Templeton Group is looking to improve the appearance of the scraggly fence running from the Good Home around to Motu Quay carpark. We will keep you up to date with any developments.
PEGASUS/WOODEND MENZSHED The MenzShed team has successfully secured funding which was received with great excitement. Our PRGI Community Connector, Ronel Stephens, has worked closely with AdviceKiwi and the management of the MenzShed to bring together the application. "I am just so delighted that Joel McLachlan identified MenzShed as a candidate for the funding back in July. This grant will cement their future and enable them to build a permanent home which will put them in a position to grow their membership and do wonderful things in our community. I personally wish to thank Joel for believing and supporting the MenzShed.”

LOCAL AUTHOR BOB NIMMO ENTERTAINS AT COMMUNITY CUPPA Bob Nimmo has published a book called the “Songs of the Pegasus Possums” which is a collection of whimsical, amusing tales on Pegasus and Pegasus Personalities. Some of the tales travel around the wider Waimak area and are written in verse, hence the title “Songs”. Bob arrived in Pegasus in 2016 from Mount Pleasant. He and his partner love the town and the surrounding area, and this gave rise to the book. Bob's partner, an accomplished artist, handled the illustrations. The book is written as a celebration, not as a money-making venture. It is a limited print run and a sell-out of copies wouldn’t cover the publishing. However, this is scarcely an issue when the exercise is a labour of love. Bob did a fantastic job narrating some of the chapters from his book at the Community Cuppa, and the audience loved it so much that a number of copies sold on the day. Our community volunteers patrol the Pegasus community in a vehicle on various nights of the week and at other random times. The purpose of the patrols is to observe and report any suspicious or dangerous activity. The role is nonconfrontational, and our volunteers are rostered on in pairs. Each person only has to go out on duty once every 3-4 months. The Waimak App The Waimak App has continued to enjoy strong growth post Covid-19 lockdown. The national iAppNetwork (representing 20 regions) reports that the Waimak App had more than 5000 unique users during its first six months of operation – well ahead of Christchurch’s 1413. The Waimak App ranks third of the 20 regions listed, for the time per session its viewers spend – at almost 3 minutes. The Waimak App numbers included just on 4000 visitors in June for 33,652-page views, 500 downloads, 1421 unique users, and 8.5 page views per visit. In all, 46% of its monthly users checked in weekly. Coupled with its monthly reach to 10,000+ Facebook users, the App’s founder Martyn Cook says everything is coming together. “We now have that first six months in operation behind us,” Martyn said. “And, after introducing ourselves to the district, the take-up has been incredible. I have woken from sleep to be amongst them. Rounding the dark of my fenceless bed their soft eyes fathom mine. Slowly, to assess my need. Soon their bovine sides are lashed with auras of moving energy hich reinforce harder than eyes, outlasting. ether, meekness and strength. What the soul craves, is given. What it does not, sloughed off, a riddance. Soft and falling away the loose poll necks. Now the ridges of upper necks meet with this memory of childhood – the seam my running finger makes in the fur of a rabbit.
Pegasus / Woodend Community Menzshed The Menzshed are delighted to confirm that after some months of fundraising we have been awarded funds to build our own Menzshed, the team are now evaluating several design options for the shed. We will be staying in the current location for the foreseeable future until the new shed is completed and are still meeting every Wednesday and Friday between 10.00am and 01.00pm at our temporary building so anybody interested in joining our group is most welcome. PEGASUS COMMUNITY CENTRE NEWS AND INFO The Pegasus Community Centre (PCC) is not just for the benefit of Pegasus residents. We encourage residents from Pegasus, Woodend, Waikuku and surrounding areas to have a closer look to see what the PCC has to offer them. COMMUNITY BOOK CAVE The ‘Community Book Cave’ at the PCC has hundreds of books including adult fiction, adult fiction large print, children’s books, non-fiction (including biographies) and jigsaws. There is no cost or formality. Have a browse, take what you want and enjoy. You can either return it, keep it, or pass it on to someone else. New books and jigsaws come in on a regular basis. The book cave is open any time the centre is open, so check out the times below. WHERE IS THE PCC AND WHEN IS IT OPEN? A big shout out to a extended member of our brigade team V.S Officer Dave Chivers (pictured) receiving Long Service and Honours awards from the Canterbury Regional Commander Paul Henderson. Dave is our Volunteer Support Officer and is a big help with making sure that our brigade is kept operational and up to speed with ordering equipment and other resources that we require. He advises and supports Woodend to ensure we are at a state of operational readiness, and provides guidance on local fire risk management Initiatives. THE RETURN OF HARRY!! To all of my fans I have returned. I hope you are both well. To those who didn’t miss me I have still returned. It’s a long story but to cut it short I entered Ch-Ch Public for a 3- day stay to have my leg bypass fixed. The pipe had collapsed which resulted in very little blood getting to the foot causing lots of pain and me walking with a limp. Unfortunately, the first attempt at righting the problem was unsuccessful so a second go was scheduled for the next day. I was warned that if this proved no good, they would have to amputate. Fair enough you don’t tell me how to plough so I won’t tell you about any butchery procedure you have to do. However, the second attempt was a no-no and I came out of the anaesthetic minus the leg below the knee, which in itself is quite interesting and opens up several scenarios for the future. What about I get a wooden leg, a parrot and an eye patch and wander about Woodend making out I was Long John Silver. And the good people of Woodend would say “look at that bloody idiot” or “I see that nutter with a parrot is on the loose again” and other such complimentary things. Conversely, I could come forward to more modern times and get one of those blade things. Then I could become ½ an Oscar Pretorius and enter the para games. However back to the bit of leg that used to be part of a set of two. One each side of me bum, a right and a
left so to speak. A nice little lass came to talk about the detached bit. Says she “what would like done with it?” Says I “I suppose putting it back where you found it is out of the question” Says she “I’m afraid so” Asks I “Is there enough on it for a casserole” “No “says she. Well in that case burn it. She then went on to explain it was a cultural thing regarding bits and bobs that were hacked off people. I replied that my culture decreed if you couldn’t eat it or sell it you dumped it. On reflection I suppose I could have cured and smoked it and turned it into a much-admired wall hanging. It would be one third of a tri- skellion. And for those who don’t know; a tri- skellion is a three-legged ancient symbol for the Isle of Man. A third setback occurred when a bug was discovered in the below knee stump. So, I was back to the land of the induced sleep or as one may say “lala land”. I was warned there was a very very slim chance and only a very very slim chance they may have to amputate again. I have come out of anaesthetic several times over the past years with no ill effects whatsoever. Not this time oh no!! First, I was being chased down Brighton beach by a huge woman wielding an axe. Seeking refuge on Banks Peninsula I fell off a cliff into the sea where a herd of white pointers all intent on tearing bits off me. And so on and so forth with mad dogs, mad truck drivers and more mad women. When finally I came right I had a wee feel and didn’t go as far to find a stump. Harry! Cont’d from Page 21 All is not lost though. Apparently there is enough left to attach a prosthetic leg. My stay in Public included four days when I didn’t go!! Of course with a leg missing I wasn’t going anywhere anyway. But you know what I mean? In short- poohs. I became seriously constipated. And when I thought I could go I had to resort to a bedpan. Which bear no resemblance whatsoever to a pan you would fry a flounder in. After a lengthy time trying to push the proverbial uphill without a rake, a thoughtful nurse suggested a glass of Kiwicrush. Boy did this shift things. In fact, things got shifted when I lest expected and I am sorry to say I lost control completely. I think the last time I was 3 or maybe 23!! A squadron of ‘Florence Nightingales’ clad in plastic aprons and white gumboots, each armed with a shovel came a running and cleaned things up. Talk about embarrassing!! St Barnabas Church Our regular Sunday services are continuing to take place despite the renewed efforts of COVID 19 – both the contemporary 4.30pm service and the more traditional 9.30am service. So too will our Home Groups, various youth groups and Mainly Music. Some of the formats may be a little different, due to safety restrictions, but as ever the warm welcome won’t change! Our planned Garage Sale is also going ahead, on 19 September in the church car park and hall. The start time is 9am, so all garage sale early birds can have a lie in if they want to! Come along and get yourself a bargain - or even just a snack and a breath of fresh air, there will be food and drink available. Woodend Indoor Bowling Club Woodend Indoor Bowls has been able to get back to bowling on a Monday evening at the Woodend Community centre. With a revised programme we have completed some of the club championship games. Well we are now halfway through Term 3. Things have certainly been challenging but workable during the changing Alert Levels at school. Many planned activities have been postponed or cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. Our roll is continuing to grow with many new families from building in Ravenswood, Two Roads and other subdivisions being completed. If there are families who have students due to start later this year or next year and have not already let us know, please go to our website www.woodend.school. nz whereby you can do the preliminary enrolment online. This just helps us with our planning and organisation for 2021. We had to cancel our Annual School Fair this year but are going ahead with our Monster School Raffle. This is almost ready to send out to our parent community. We are most grateful to our sponsors; Ravenswood North Canterbury, Chris De Lury Builders, RW Design, Jane Godfrey, Countdown Rangiora, Brite Heat Pumps, Charmed Gifts, Bella Body and The Woodend Tavern. We have over 20 prizes to be won - $2 a ticket. These will be
available at the office or through our students. Last week two teams competed in the Year 7/8 Canterbury Technology Challenge and had to produce themed meals with strict ingredients which resulted in some delicious creations. Judging is happening later this week.
Cycle Sense: Our Year 5/6 students have had an amazing two weeks of cycle education in participation with North Canterbury Sports. Thank you for the amazing feedback from the community when seeing our students out on the road with the team. COVID-19 Update Thank you all for your co-operation and support through the COVID time. As you know, things are changing quickly, and we will respond under the guidance of the MOH. In alert level 2, we ask you to bring your own mask and observe physical distancing. We also ask you to sign at reception using your COVID tracer App or in the manual register. Any patients with respiratory symptoms, needing to be seen at the practice are asked to call first and discuss with the nurse. The nurse will ask you a number of questions to assess you. You may be asked to wait in your car. If you meet the ministry of health criteria, a free COVID swab will be offered at the medical centre. The criteria are subject to change. If you need to see a GP, it will be arranged. Results of COVID swabs are texted to you as soon as they are available. We have resumed all our services including minor surgeries, mole checks, smears, immunisations and health checks and Saturday morning clinics. Some of our visiting specialists have resumed their clinics at the medical centre. If you have a medical emergency or are acutely unwell, please call 111. You can book a telephone or in-practice consultation by calling us or online via our website www.pegasusmedicalcentre.co.nz and go to ‘Manage My Health (MMH)’. You can also request a repeat prescription and in the near future, you will be able to check your test results and recalls. You can download the app from the App store or Google Play, or visit the website https://www.managemyhealth.co.nz/ Please note fees for phone consultations are the same as regular consultations. Phone calls to nurses: Nurses will take your phone call if they are available, otherwise, please leave a message and you will be called back in a timely manner.
