Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m wondering how we got to the 1st day of spring already! It’s so lovely to have longer days and early spring flowers already showing, such a lovely time of year.

Did you know you can write to The Editor? You might want to share your feedback, for example, what you enjoy most about reading The Woodpecker, or what you would like to see in The Woodpecker.

I do receive some wonderful feedback from readers which is very pleasing, and sometimes some suggestions too, which are always helpful.

Finding Mr Woody Woodpecker idea came out of a discussion I had with our now former printers. This has been hugely successful and popular with last two months having 10 children finding him. It’s awesome to hear how children will look forward to looking for him. Sometimes the photos will come in the very same day the magazine has been delivered! Remember, it’s not about who is first but showing you found him.

So, parents, what would your children like to see more of do you think?

As we are a charity and therefore rely on advertising space to pay for our costs, the main one being the printing, we need to ensure there is always a

balance of 50% / 50% advertising and community space. Keeping this balance ensures our local businesses are being given great promotion as well as learning about local groups and clubs, especially when they are doing some great things.

This is one of the things I’ve enjoyed about this role over and above running my business, which is learning more about what’s going on in our community, and realising what a great community we have.

Our distribution area has grown hugely with the growth in Woodend, Pegasus and of course Ravenswood. And soon we will have some great new retail and hospitality options right on our doorstep.

Thank you for reading this and our publication – without you there would be no magazine, so keep the contributions and adverts coming in. Have a great month everyone.

Woodend Spring Flower Show cont’d: We encourage members of the public to enter and showcase their spring flowers and produce, baking and preserves and handcraft (both children of all ages and adults). A special ‘Blokes section’ as well as photography and a colouring competition are included. There is no charge to enter the competition and schedules and details are available on our website, https:// woodendspringflowershow.weebly. com or on our Facebook page. Hard copies are available from libraries, Paws Vets Woodend (kind sponsors of our colouring competition) and other local businesses. Entries close at 8pm on Thursday 28 September. Send to Glenis Everts, gheverts1952@gmail. com

The winners are rewarded at prize giving at 4pm with the presentation of trophies and prize money.

As we are celebrating our 90 years with a 1930s theme, one of the children’s challenges is to decorate their bike or scooter and bring it to the show by 12.30 for the Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon to judge. For budding florists, a 1930s bridal bouquet, ‘Spring of 1930s’ and ‘High Tea’ are sections in the Decorative sections. In the handcrafts, hessian oven cloths and lavender bags are included. Victoria sponge, rum balls and shortbread are some of the challenges in the baking section.

The event is complemented with the popular Devonshire teas and market stalls in the car park selling plants, garden products, handcrafts etc. Our raffle is also on sale.

To encourage children to enter the show, a craft morning will be held in

the school holidays at the Woodend Community Centre on Wednesday 27 September from 10am until noon. The cost is $2 per child and all materials are supplied to create a collage using fabric, etc; a tinfoil sportsperson; a pinecone animal and a decorated biscuit. Due to demand, we ask that children register if they wish to attend. To register please contact Val Cotton, 03 312 8410 or Pam Cleeve, pamjcleeve@gmail.com

We hope people will come along and support this community project.

Welcome to Spring in the Waimakariri!

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

As a keen gardener this is my favourite season. With the daffodils popping up and the blossom starting to bloom it really is a beautiful time of year. As the weather is starting to warm up and we are enjoying the sunny afternoons, it is a great opportunity to explore the wonderful parks and beaches around the District as we spend time with family and friends. Council has also welcomed the commitment that has been made by

both Labour and National parties to deliver on the Woodend Bypass. This is essential infrastructure that is long overdue and we’re looking forward to this project progressing.

This has been a high priority for the District and the wider region. This is an essential link which we’ve been advocating strongly for over a number of years.

It’s a key priority route in our planning for future growth in the District. We’re also advocating for better infrastructure investment from the Government through Waka Kotahi

for the wider District including a replacement of Skew Bridge in East Kaiapoi as well as an Eastern Rangiora Link Road.

I was honoured to be asked to lay a wreath at the Rangiora Cenotaph with Fred McKenzie (who served in Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam) to mark Vietnam Veterans’ Day on 18 August.

It was a special day of reflection for over 3,000 New Zealand military personnel and 300 civilian medical and aid workers who served in Vietnam between 1964 and 1972.

We remembered the sacrifices of those who died, those who returned home wounded, those who lost their lives at a young age from health issues related to their war-service, and to all of those

who are still carrying the physical and mental scars of the conflict.

It was also a privilege for me to be asked to say a few words at the Rangiora RSA afterwards.

To say thank you to all those who served in Vietnam.

It saddens me that these men and women were not welcomed home as heroes or that their service was not acknowledged at the time as it should have been.

It was very important to me to have the opportunity to say thank you on behalf of our District and acknowledge those sacrifices. Lest we Forget – those who gave their service in Vietnam.

Welcome to the September edition of our newsletter.

Community Garden

We would like to start off by saying the biggest THANK YOU to the Pegasus / Woodend Menz Shed, as they have constructed two x 5-metre planter boxes for the Woodend Community Garden. This has created a lot more growing space, and in return, a lot more produce for many seasons to come.

The garden is continuing to produce through the winter and has been providing for families at Woodend School.

In the 4th term, the junior school is looking at starting a gardening programme and using the community garden as their classroom.

Community Connecting Cycleway

More exciting news for the community, the council is building a new cycleway to connect Kaiapoi through to Woodend and Ravenswood.

This cycleway was identified as a priority by the public through the Walking and Cycling Network Plan adopted by Council in 2022.

The Waimakariri Council is currently

sharing the plans with the community and will report back to the Community Boards and Council in September/ October 2023. Once final designs are approved, they will undertake the procurement process and intend to award contracts for the build before the end of 2023.

Building of the cycleways should start in early 2024 with completion date of June 2024.

Woodend Noticeboard

Enterprise North Canterbury is helping give life to our very unloved notice board, situated outside Vege’n’Out.

This board will have an updated map of the region, community services available in Woodend and up and coming events.

Interested community groups keen to advertise their services and events can email Jocelyn on jghadamsfamily2@ gmail.com The notice board will be refreshed every month.

Clean Up Week

Clean Up New Zealand Week is upon us and this year the WCA are giving their time to the Waimakariri Youth Council as they are cleaning up the Ashley-Rakahuri River. This event

Page 6 The Woodpecker September 2023

will be held on the 24 September from 10am to 2pm. The location of this is the river access via High St and Lower Sefton Road, Ashley. The youth council would love to see community members coming down and making positive changes for their environment. To find out more details, visit the Waimakariri Youth Council on Facebook.

Community Food Pantry

Our community food pantry is available for donations or if you need food, situated on the main road, in the WASP carpark beside the community garden.

If you are donating products, please only pantry stable items. Although the food is stored in a fridge, it is not powered. So please no items that need refrigerating. Thank you for everyone’s

contributions.

Congratulations

The Woodend Community Association is very proud that one of its member’s, Dan Rosewarne, has become 32nd on the party list for Labour. Congratulations once again Dan.

The Woodend Community Association is looking forward to the remainder of 2023, it will be full of new ideas and projects for us to help make Woodend a better place to live.

If you have any suggestions on ways to improve our community, please be in touch via email at woodend. community.association@gmail.com. That’s all for now.

Have a fabulous month of September. The Woodend Community Association

We thought this month, you may like to know what happens once you are a member of the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade, besides attending calls. We train every Monday night (except public holidays) and all members are expected to attend, unless they have work commitments, are on holiday, or are ill. We generally start around 7pm and training runs for approximately two hours depending on what skills we are working on. The skills are many and varied and some you may not have thought of. Of course, probably the most important skill for a Firefighter is using Breathing Apparatus or BA and this is practiced very regularly as there are a lot of components within wearing and using BA. It may seem odd training with ladders, but again, a lot of trust is needed with fellow firefighters when climbing up several stories. Once up the top, you need to know how to use a fall arrest kit and this is quite technical, because a lot can go wrong if not prepared properly. This requires knots and lines (ropes) skills and members are taught various knots and how to tie off lines properly, so they are safe. You may have seen Firefighters out on a Monday nights’ training, running hoses and doing hose drills. We tend to go to different areas in our neighbourhood so that we can test hydrants are working properly.

Although we carry some water on the Fire Appliance and much more on the Tanker, there are calls that require more than we can carry and that is where a hydrant working at its optimum is important. Another aspect of our role is attending motor vehicle accidents. For this, we need specific training on the specialist equipment we carry to make access, and extensive first aid training to treat patients. Because of this training, we are called, from time to time to assist St John with some of their major calls. So…don’t be alarmed if you call for an ambulance and a fire truck arrives. This just means we will assist you until an ambulance can get there.

We have a water rescue kit, which if required for someone reported drowning, we can take to the scene and use. We have what is called splash suits or hazmat suits, which we use if called to a chemical spill or other dangerous materials. It is very important to learn how to don this suit properly as lives can be in danger if not worn properly. We learn about traffic management. Please be mindful if you are a driver who has been held up or sent in another direction, just give us a smile or a wave. We don’t like having to do this, but it is for our patients’ safety, yours and ours that we need to keep the road clear and for everyone to be safe.

The Woodpecker September 2023 Page 11

There are many other skills we learn, like working with electricity, what to do with gas leaks, rescuing pets and people in some odd situations, etc. Lots to learn, but very rewarding working with the team.

Please feel free to join us for entertainment, plant stalls, raffles and afternoon tea. Visitors are always welcome. Our next meeting will be in the Woodend Community Hall on Monday 18 September. The speaker for that meeting is Trish Hewitt who is a Trillium expert.

On Thursday 21 July we welcomed three new members to the Lions Club Woodend Pegasus who like me and my fellow members are determined to make this area an even better place to live. We also want to welcome people from Ravenswood and Waikuku to become part of the Lions family so that we can work together to make life better for our communities and have fun while we do it.

• New Welcome to Woodend and Woodend Beach signage

• Provide new fence around the Woodend Play Centre

In addition to the above we will be looking to take on more projects that residents of the area need, as and when resources and money is available.

To achieve the things we want to do, we need the help of you, the people in the local community. We need Tradies and other volunteers who are willing to give some their time help with construction projects even. We need business and other sponsors in the community, who love this area

DIABETES – Hi, I’m Hayley – one of the members of our great nursing team at PMC. I have a special interest in diabetes, especially Type 2 Diabetes. This is a disease which is burgeoning within the New Zealand population with more than 250,000 Kiwi’s effected by it and this number is set to grow rapidly over the coming years. Even if you are not affected by it, you will definitely know someone who is!

My role in the practice is to support both the patient the doctor to maximise outcomes. To help this, I encourage all patients who are diabetic to make an annual fully funded appointment with me to discuss your diabetes. During this appointment, it gives me the opportunity to assess your feet, check your blood pressure, check medications and the effectiveness of them, as well as take the time to get to you know you and what makes you tick! There are always new developments in the diabetic space –both with lifestyle and diet advice as well as new medications. If you are diabetic, I look forward to seeing you soon in my clinic and helping you with your journey.

PATIENT FEE INCREASE – We have recently reviewed our fees, with growing costs unfortunately we have increased our fees from 3 July 2023. We understand these are challenging times for our patients, however if you are a registered patient and find you are struggling to pay for your consult, please contact reception team who can give you option on a payment plan. Kia Kaha.

REPEAT PRESCRITION REQUESTS – We strongly recommend you put in writing requests for your repeat scripts at least a couple of weeks before running out. Options for you to do this quickly and seamlessly: -

(1) Manage my Health, (2) PMC website, (3) email request Please remember to note the pharmacy to pick up from. If you have run out, please also let us know. Charges apply for repeat scripts and short scripts (bridging script i.e., 1 week until appointment). Please note we still follow safe and responsible medical practice and you may need to make an appointment if request is declined. So the more time you can allow for requesting medication, the smaller chance of you being inconvenienced.

WINTER VIRAL ILLNESSES – It’s that time of the year again with lots of viral illnesses spreading throughout our community, these can often be managed at home. Helpful information and online links: Phone Healthline 0800 611 116 or www.healthinfo.org.nz or www.kidshealth.org.nz/flu-influenza or https://flufree.co.nz/content/uploads/2018/05/Coping-with-flu-at-home2018_web.pdf

APPOINTMENT SLOTS – to look after your needs appropriately, please note a doctor’s appointments are 15 minutes long usually to cover one or… if time is favourable two issues. If you have multiple issues to discuss please book two appointments (additional fees will apply)

STAFFING UPDATE – In the coming winter months unfortunately cold / flu and covid will have a significant impact on our practice affecting our reception, nurse and doctor workforce. This means some days there will be limited appointments available and we may start to get booked out a week + in advance. When we have limited capacity, we will do our best to meet your needs but sometimes may refer you or your whanau to an urgent care facility like 24-hour surgery following triage. We strongly suggest you book your routine appointments and review your medication supply well in advance to ensure an appointment is made that suits your plans. Please bear with us over the next few months while we do our best to provide you with timely care. Please respect our team – we are here to help, not to be hurt ☺

In a medical emergency, and if acutely unwell don’t hesitate to dial 111.

Hey neighbours!

This time of year, in Canterbury can be dreary and depressing, and getting up early to run in the cold is not appealing. Things seem to be harder in winter, particularly outdoor pursuits. Exercise has been proven to have a positive impact on mental well-being, by decreasing symptoms of depression and anxiety, and increasing overall happiness. This is especially true for parkrun, as the community-driven aspect of the event creates a sense of belonging, support, and motivation for parkrunners, volunteers and spectators.

Fortunately participating in parkrun is a great way to improve your state of mind, and let’s be honest – it does make you feel good for the rest of your Saturday.

Goals and milestones are important in life. They keep us focused on the important stuff and keep us motivated. They make us develop plans to achieve what we want and increase the amount of time and effort we spend on an activity.

Pegasus parkrun can help you to reach your personal fitness goals!

parkrun is a worldwide success and has been based on the simple basic principles formed from the start, weekly, free, 5K, timed, for everyone, forever. Pegasus parkrun’s popularity is a combination of these principals, being free it’s accessible to everyone, it’s an inclusive welcoming environment open to all ages and abilities from the serious running to joggers and walkers.

It’s convenient if you are local, with the event held at the same amazingly lakeside course at the same time every Saturday. Easy to fit into your relaxing weekend and a great way to kickstart your body into more of the fun stuff (like mowing lawns, chopping firewood, vacuuming, cleaning windows and washing the car).

Most importantly, parkrun is a great place to meet new people and make friends, it has a strong sense of community with miles of pride and respect, where we are seen supporting each other to our 5K success.

Page 26 The Woodpecker September 2023

In 2023 we have 3,635 finishes at Pegasus, that’s a whopping 18,175kms walked, jogged and run around the Lake Pegasus!

Perhaps give parkrun a try? There must be something in it!

In association with Shine Tribe we are pleased to announce the upcoming Self Defence seminar for people with intellectual disability.

The seminar will be held at TASK Dojo, 57 Williams Street, Kaiapoi, Waimakariri 3 August 2023 at 9.3011.00am.

There will be approximately a dozen attendees coming from our local community and some from further afield (and will be supported by helpers).

Each attendee has a unique challenge that they live with daily.

This seminar simply offers them something a little different and we are pleased The Woodpecker is covering this event in its publication as we believe it would be great for our attendees, and other people who may suffer from similar conditions.

We also feel it is a warm story to share with our community and The Woodpecker readers.

If you could please confirm interest or otherwise, it would be greatly appreciated.

Seiko-Kai Karate

Seiko-Kai Karate hosted what is hoped to be the first of many para-karate self-defence seminars at their Kaiapoi based dojo (training hall). The session was held in association with Shine Tribe who provide a forum for people with intellectual disabilities to gather and share experiences in music, artistic projects and mindfulness inspired activities.

Chief instructor of the dojo, Kev Merriman said, “The idea of doing a self-defence seminar with Shine tribe was posed to our dojo, and as soon I spoke with Tash Beckingsale the founder of the group and heard / felt her passion for her little tribe, it was simply a matter of preparing a lesson plan that catered for each member of the group”. Part of the preparation was holding an independent session with the Seiko-Kai Team in advance of the seminar. “Our ambition was simple. We wanted to empower each student by providing them with opportunity to lead, share what they have learned in the class and ensure that they could take away the lessons being taught and remember them”.

Kev Sensei therefore structured the class to focus upon a single principle of ‘step and enter’, whereby the repetitive nature of the base movement, allowed for different outcomes to would-be confrontational situations, such as strangle holds, wrist

grabs, and hook punches etc.

Tash Beckingsale said “The session was a huge success. What made it a success was the manner in which instructors interacted with the participants tailoring to everyone’s individual learning styles and needs”.

“The passion and willingness to be flexible was so refreshing and the outcome was everyone felt comfortable, safe and engaged in the session. Everyone went home feeling very empowered and a big smile on their faces”.

By default, the Support Staff would also take part in the class. Rhondda said “I loved doing this class and I was amazed at the efforts of everyone participating. The training was made fun and where required the instructors adapted moves to suit individual students”.

Support Staff Jenny added: “I think the class was helpful and respectful. Tia who relies on her wheelchair to get around was really determined to show everyone that she was able to do what was taught to her. The Sensei’s were very helpful showing things that we can do with just our hands/ arms allowing Tia to participate in a sitting position and able to use these self Defence actions if ever needed. Tia loved being able to do what was shown’.

Support Staff Suzi said, “AMAZING, full-on fun and a special experience our beautiful group will be talking about for ever. The instructors were

The Woodpecker September 2023 Page 29

incredibly thoughtful, full of fun and involved with every individual in different ways”.

Kev Sensei said. “Our dojo is all about the community and karate spirit, and this event would not have been possible without the support of many others, such as my employers (Armitage Williams Construction), who supported my involvement, Dan and Jake giving their work time to help me teach and Ruby who needed special permission from school”.

“But of course, Shine Tribe and the incredible work they do should not be underestimated. Tash is an exceptional human being with a huge and caring attitude. Alongside the support staff whom, showed tremendous patience, provided a level of care and awareness for each Shine Tribe member which was touching to witness. They are the ones who have true karate spirit.”

Fellow Seiko-Kai Instructor Dan Visker stated, “You could feel the energy and excitement from everyone as soon as they walked into the dojo. Knowing that each student copes daily with their own unique challenges, I was impressed to see them give it everything as they expressed themselves on the matts wholeheartedly and have fun doing so. I witnessed, positive attitudes and enthusiastic energy. It was a pleasure to be a part of this class”.

Jake Dale who came up with the idea

for the event, had this to say.

“The session was a great opportunity for each person to challenge themselves to try something they hadn’t done before.

Everyone rose to the challenge and proved to themselves they had more than what it takes to defend themselves. The energy from the Shine Tribe members was a highlight for me, it was a great atmosphere. The best thing about karate is that it does not discriminate. Anyone from any walk of life can learn”.

The course content was designed to foster independence and confidence as well as provide realistic self-defence techniques. Speaking about this aspect, Tash Said “We had so much fun and learnt how to keep ourselves safe and defend ourselves. Everybody unleashed their inner warrior and left radiating confidence with a big smile”.

“Whilst very simple techniques, they proved effective, and you could see in the body language everyone was chuffed with themselves and very empowered. I think they will carry this confidence with them into their everyday lives at work and while out in the community”.

“Overflowing gratitude to our incredible Sensei’s Teachers Kev and Dan, and their support Jake, and Ruby, for sharing their passion and knowledge with us. The course was very empowering and fun for our Tribe and we have already had enquiries for when the next one will be”.

A proven track record: Getting things done for Waimakariri

As your local MP I have fought hard for our communities, securing important wins - from a commitment to after-hours healthcare to better infrastructure, including the third-laning of SHI at the Waimakariri Bridge.

Waimakariri is struggling with a cost of living crisis. Crime has increased. Health wait times have ballooned.

I will get Waimakariri back on track by:

• Fixing the economy to reduce the cost-of-living.

• Restoring law and order, and

• Improving our schools and healthcare.

St Barnabas Church Update

We celebrated Stephen’s ordination to the role of priest at the beginning of August and it was a very special evening. It was wonderful to see so many people there supporting him, as he begins a new era in his life, and we consider ourselves blessed that he will be spending that next era with us at St Barnabas.

He and his family have taken a short holiday to get their breath back after all his work, but there is still plenty going on. The church is open every weekday evening for half an hour, 5pm until 5.30pm, for evening prayer. Wednesdays and Fridays it’s the turn of the preschoolers to bring their caregivers along for Music and Play from 10am; then there’s free food available from 4pm at Free Food on Fridays. The Village Men study group

meet fortnightly on Wednesday evenings and the Ladds and Lattes morning tea group meet up on the 3rd Friday of each month. Our 9.30am (more traditional) and 11am Generations (more family oriented) church services run every Sunday, though they don’t always take exactly the same form. At the time of writing, on Sunday 27 August, for example, Stephen will be kept busy on his return from holiday by conducting at least five baptisms during the service. He’s certainly going to ‘hit the ground running’ – how wonderful to see so many people committing their lives to Jesus at the same time!

We’d love to see you there; but whether we do or not, have a great month. Stay warm and stay healthy!

CAB North Canterbury New Hours

Our office is now open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3.30pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 4.30pm.

We’re all connected

That’s why the CAB service is so important. We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need.

We provide the warmth and welcome of a place where anyone can come to talk about, and get help with, any issue.

The CAB service includes in-depth interviewing of a client to identify what is happening for them or what information they seek, and to find out what they’ve done so far. The trained volunteer research options specific to each client’s situation and then explains these to the client in a way that helps them understand and work out what they want to do next.

Our bureau has an extensive, reliable and accurate database of local and national information at our fingertips, which is updated regularly, along with pamphlets and booklets.

Language Support

If English isn’t your first language, we have an internal Language Support service to make it easier for clients to access the language skills of CAB volunteers across the country. Our intranet enables one of our volunteers to see others around the country who are available to assist a client in another language. Currently, we are able to support more than 30 languages using this service. Get in touch.

Do come and see us. We’re trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.

You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz
