Decorations or Furniture I want to make a magazine about decoration or furniture. Because of the virus ,everybody have to stay at home ,so do i. And to kill the endless quarantine time i brought a Nintendo Switch game”Animal Crossing”. It’s about create your own island ,decorate your own house with the item you got. I found a lot interest in it. When i was told to make a magazine ,this idea just came up to me suddenly .”Why won’t we decorate our house in reality ,it will be interesting too! “ I think it’s a great idea because we have much more time to focus on our own life that we might not pay attention to . And this will be a great chance. If this magazine is made for the students. we’d better put some items with acceptable price and some DIY materials in it. Like some tiny flower pot or some pillow, cushion stuff. What do you think?

Monkey King Let’s make a magazine about Monkey King! I thought about it when I was watching a video on Youtube which is called ‘how the monkey king escaped the underworld’. Here is the link: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=Xs-9vfWDJfU You are definitely gonna watch this amazing video and it has subtitles in multiple languages. As a Chinese, monkey king was a part of my childhood. At first, I knew him as a superhero who has great power and helped his master to complete the great journey to the west. As I grew up, I have gradually understood his spirit of rebellion and I was so moved when he was challenging the holy government to get freedom. So he is my favorite character now.And I think making a magazine about Monkey King is a good idea because there are so many different versions of the story all around the world. We have the famous Anime version
in Japan which is the ‘Dragon Ball’ and ‘Hanuman’, the divine monkey god in India. Because of the widespread story, there might be a thousand monkey kings in a thousand people’s eyes. As we have students come from different regions in Seika, I think it would be interesting to know how each person thinks about the very same character. We can collect information about it from the websites in our own languages and share them among the group. And we can also write or draw about the character in our own styles. Or we can even retell the story to each other. And superheroes would also be a nice theme for the magazine. So if some of the groups are not a big fan of the monkey king, we can talk about other superheroes. That would also be nice to me. Under the situation of COVID-19, we need belief and power! *

Travel Let’s make magazine about travel!I love to travel and making a trip! This idea came up when I always stay home because of the corona crisis. I really miss myself when I travel to the place I’ve never been before, explore something new, meet someone and share each other experience. I think it’s a good idea because we can share each other secret place and we will know a lot of place to travel too. We are staying in Kyoto,
Yihao Cao’s idea:
* Though Kura Takenaka’s idea for Our Favorite Movies was tied with Tang Song’s idea for a magazine about Life, in a revote cast in class time, everyone decided that movies would be the better idea. The main reasons for the preference included: 1) Everyone could easily think of more than one movie they would like to introduce 2) everyone wanted to illustrate for this magazine, and illustrating some part of their favorite movie would be enjoyable 3) students were interested in what movies each other had to reccommend.

Magazine about Life Well.I want to make a magazine about life, that will be the book that wrote my life. In my free time, I looked out from the window of my cabin, saw rain dripping from the eaves, and saw the breeze blowing through the treetops. At that time, I thought of my future as erratic as they were. When I looked back, I looked at me for 20 years. My life is like a rain, there is not much taste, but also various poses. Since then I want to write down my life. I don’t think this is a good idea, because my life may not be of interest to many people, it can be said to be boring. But I just want to write such a thick magazine In fact, seeing the teacher’s magazine, I have the same sentiment, writing the small details of life, a lunch, a leaf, or a sad thing, that is the magazine I want to write. *

Favorite Game Items Let’s make a magazine about favorite Game Items.I came up with this idea when I was playing Animal Crossing. When we’re playing games, we use a lot of items. They are shovels, guns, knives, lights, torches, and something high tech that you can’t call the name. But when we talk about games. We don’t usually talk about those items. The conversation mostly goes to the stories, characters or skills. So that’s the point. The items are also very important to games. But they do not get talked often. Try to find the most favorite game item and introduce it to everyone. Where does it from? How does it work? And why you like that? Maybe you want do some customize on it. And maybe it have some stories to tell.Draw it, or write about it. Of course you’re welcomed to find another ways to explain that. *

About the 24 Movies Zine
COVID-19 sux. My students are heros.
Design Specific English Kyoto Seika University April - July 2020 During the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic Online Zoom Lessons
Yihao Cao-kun was stuck in China and not able to come to Japan to study at Kyoto Seika University. Other international students in this group—Parada Sukkrasanti, Lin Sun, Song Tang and Min Xiao—were all in Kyoto but still not able to go to university to study. Ayano Dake and Hazuki Sekiyama were in the same boat; not able to actually come to Kyoto Seika, meet the international students face to face and chat with them in English, which is why they joined my class in the first place.
This magazine is the result of a mixture of English and Design learning, a bunch of idea sharing and a dash of Adobe InDesign training, all during this kind-of-stupid period of coronavirus lockdowns.
Regardless of these sudden and upsetting changes in circumstance, we all got together on zoom (attendance was better than normal as well!). With a bit of conversation study and som good use of the breakout room function in zoom, I was able to get them chatting and magazine making. As the class instructor, it was no sweat on my part, but the fact that these students actually came and joined in, and kept coming back—I assume they enjoyed themselves?—makes them heroes in my heart.
The theme chosen was ‘movies’. What you’ll find in these pages are a selection of movies recommended by participating students (and the course instructor), under the three banners, ‘movies to relieve stress’, ‘animated movies’ and ‘world movies’ (movies selected from each participants’ own country).
Watching a movie is a commitment. To watch a movie, you need about an hour and a half to two hours of your time. The length of movies in general was apparently set to allow for second screenings in the evening (late sessions), which usually start at about 9:00pm. This way more screenings could be offered in a single day for new realeases, ensuring maximum profits. Everyone likes movies. You may meet someone who dosen’t watch movies, but that’s because they’re either too busy or don’t like to spend much time in front of screens. Both of these reasons I can sympathize with. That said, I haven’t met a single person who dosen’t like movies yet. Movies are essentially stories wrapped in a motion picture package; we see 24 still frames flicker one after the other in front of our eyes (or other higher numbers depending on what screen and system you are looking at); our brains perform closure and we see are actual moving images. Technology aside, after that it’s all editing, effects, characters and drama to enjoy. Once you’ve seen enough movies, you become aware of these deep, underlying patterns beyond the visuals; and you start actively looking at the stories. When we see a story we like, a strange bond forms: not only with the characters, struggles, developments and outcomes of the movies themselves, but with the places and people we saw the movie with and the memories surrounding that viewing experience. Which explains why we can all love what others might consider a terrible movie. When I was young, I used to hear about movies from other people and decide what to watch. Then the net happened and searching for and watching trailers became easier. Now on SNS, with two-word comments like “loved it!” or “highly reccomended”, it’s getting harder to know what to watch and you don’t know what information to trust. Friends are still a solid, reliable way to get movie recomendations. The idea to recommend each other great movies was voted on from a number of ideas suggested by students. These 24 movies, and this 24 Movies Zine, is a solid reference if you’re looking for something good to watch. Duncan Brotherton (Class Instructor)

I like movies from various genres. I often watch fantasy movies. I usually watch them in my free time. I’ve watched about 50 movies in my life. The reason why I like movies is that they are so powerful. They make me feel thrilled and excited.
I like to watch heart-felt movies, any movies about animals, and also movies trending in the cinema. I usually go to the cinema twice a month and watch movies in my free time. When we watch movies, we can get experiences that we haven’t had the chance to face in real life. And we can all learn something from these experiences. That’s why I like watching movies.
What kind of movies I like? I like Action, Sci-Fi… but I can’t turn down any movie that is highly rated. How often I watch movies? Maybe twice a month? How many movies have I watched? I haven’t counted but it must be over 100. Why do I watch movies? Some titles interest me and pull me into the theater. I also find some highly rated movies I want to watch online. Movies make me think a lot.
Other movies I recommend • Not a movie, but I strongly recommend The Three Body written by Cixin Liu. It’s a Sci-Fi novel from China. There are three parts in the series and the second part has just been published in Japanese recently. • Interstellar (2014) • The Godfather Series (1972 - 1990)
2
SF is my favorite movie genre. I may sometimes watch comedies or animation. I have watched about 20 or so movies I think. When I want to recreate myself, I watch movies. They help me to relax.
Other recommended movies • MIB (Men in Black, 1997) • Star Wars (1977 - 2019) • Terminator 2 (1991) • Your Name (Kimi no na wa, 2016) • Summer Wars (2009)
Movies I reccommend • Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) • Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011) (星を追う子ども) • Diana (2013) • Beauty and the Beast (2017) • Back to the Future (1985) • Sister Act (1992) • Drowning Love (2016) (溺れるナイフ) • Any movie from Studio Ghibli (ジブリ映画)
Other movies I recommend • How to Train Your Dragon (2010) • A tale of Mari and Three Puppies (2007) • Eight Below (2006)

Student at Kyoto Seika University, studying illustration. Plays a druid in World of Warcraft.
Graphic designer, teacher and translator resident in Kyoto City, Japan. Likes Craft Beer.
When I choose movies, I look at directors. Wong Kar-wai, Wes Anderson, Kon Satoshi, and Rajkumar Hirani are all my favorite directors. I can watch movies at any time, and there are some movies that I will rush to the cinema to watch immediately after they have been released. I don’t know how many movies I have watched but I really enjoy experiencing different lives with different characters. And the crying and laughing helps to relieve a lot of life’s pressure.
I watch all kinds of movies, but I’m very careful about checking reviews before I do. I don’t have a preference for movie types, but I do tend to watch a lot of animation (maybe because I live in Japan). I’ll watch something anytime I have a free day; usually on the weekends. I’ve watched so many movies I can’t count, but I’m proud of the fact that I’ve seen almost all the top 100 rated movies on IMDB. com. Movies are a great way to relax and get inspired to do something.
I like all kinds of movies; the genre dosen’t matter. If I had to choose one, I’d say I like difficult movies. I search for reviews on the internet. I don’t watch movies very often now; like six or seven a year. Maybe less. But I watched tons of Hong Kong movies when I was in primary school. I think I’ve watched about 50+ movies by now. For the most part, if I want to watch a movie it’s because it’s classic or it has public praise or just because I like its poster.
Other movies I recommend • Shi Fu (2015) • Comrades: Almost a Love Story (1996) • Let the bullets fly (2010) • J.cole: 4 Your Eyes Only (2017) • Once a Thief (1991) • The King‘s Speech (2010) • The Legend of 1900 (1998)
I like action and science fiction movies. Sometimes I watch romantic movies too. There is no fixed time I watch movies. Sometimes I think of a certain movie and I just watch it. I have seen a lot of movies. There is a movie channel in China, and every Saturday they show a movie. I watch it almost every week. When I’m watching a movie, It makes me feel relaxed. You can immerse yourself in the plot together with the protagonist.

Movies to relieve stress Are you stressed out? Is too much homework getting you down? Do you need to curl up on the sofa with your favorite pet cat, or stuffed animal, and a nice drink (maybe a hot cocoa, or big glass of cold milk, or a nice craft beer), in your pyjamas, and turn out all the lights, switch on the computer and open netflix, or put a rental movie in your DVD player, and just sit back and relax? You wanna laugh, or watch stuff explode? You wanna be amazed, and maybe have your mind blown? You wanna watch some guy beat up 10 other guys at the same time? Feel a little bit of life’s sweetness or maybe just see someone do their best? We got you covered.

At first there were many parts that I didn’t understand, but I was pulled into the movie’s world. I was deceived many times; it was so interesting. The characters are so confident with their tricks and handle them well. It’s a refreshing comedy movie. Please watch it when all the stress has piled up!
d only blow it.

The supporting character plays a great poker hand in this scene. The line is from the last part of the scene, when he refuses payment for the job.

Willow is just a great adventure movie. It’s so much fun; so exciting, and funny, and it can be quite deep at times as well. Even the music from the soundtrack is great (especially the village music). I first saw it when I was 8 years old; when I watched it again recently, almost 30 years later I was supprised: it’s still good. You don’t need to know the story; just watch it.
Safe? Look at these people! This place is cursed, peck!

As Willow and the great swordsman Madmartigan ride into an abandoned fortress being chased by evil forces, these words set the stage for one of the greatest action scenes I ever saw when I was eight years old. I’ve seen hundreds of movies since, and it’s still exciting even to this day.

I first heard about this movie when I was in elementary school; my mother had a CD. I was very impressed the first time I saw it and I still remember it. I like the process when the heroine turns into a princess.
11
Mia is an ugly, shy, high-school girl, and her only friends are Lily and her older brother. She was living with her mother, but suddenly her grandmother Clarice tells her that she is the only royal successor in Genovia. Her grandmother is actually a queen. Mia tries to abandon her succession to the throne, but at the suggestion of the Queen and after three weeks of princess education, she decides to become a princess. You can watch her grow inward and outward like Cinderalla.
The Princess Diaries Comedy, Family, Romance 2001 Mia Thermopolis has just found out that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. Kung-fu master Ip Man was born in Foshan, Guangdong Provence. This part is about a young Ip Man, who lives with his family and practices Wing Chun every day. There’s several fight scenes, but the second half is pretty dark because World-War II begins. The most stress relieving scene is from this part. It’s just too awesome and I can’t describe it with words.
13 Ip Man wants revenge for his friend, grows incredibly angry. He challenges 10 men to a fight. At the end of this scene, 9 men are down and only 1 remains standing.

I watched Mad Max: Fury Road immediately after it was released. There are a lot of explosion scenes that go boom my head all the time. And it is also a nice odyssey story about revenge and hope. Besides, the car and gear designs are so cool that I could watch it for a whole day.
17
This is the biggest explosion scene in the movie. This happens when the heroine and her friends are escaping from the bad guys. I think this is quite stress relieveing. Sometimes you just want to see things explode.
Mad Max: Fury Road Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi 2015 In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper, and a drifter named Max. In the soundtrack: Junkie XL: Blood Bag (2015)

This is not the type of movie that makes me want to watch in the cinema. I don’t usually watch love stories, but this one really surprised me. The soundtrack is good and the color is also beautiful. The story also touched my heart. I always forget the story in movies, but when I listen to City of Stars, it always brings me back to that mood. If you haven’t seen a musical yet, you might like La La Land.
19 When the heroine comes back home you can see that she is really upset. The hero is playing his piano, and when she hears his voice, she begins to sing with him. You can see the way her feelings changes subtly in this scene.
“La La Land makes me feel the romance of love and the freedom of life. It’s a perfect match with the classic music. I love the song, City of Stars.”

I guarantee that you will find the energy to live your life no matter what it’s like after you’ve seen this movie. That’s why I chose this movie to recommend in the stress relief movie section.
21 In this scene, the main character recieves an award for all the work he did during the semester; you can see all the hard work he did if you watch the movie. It made me feel really impressed when he received the award.
“This movie is very moving. With a story about friendship and family ties, I couldn’t stop crying.”
Wonder Drama, Family 2017 Based on the New York Times bestseller, this movie tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters the fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. Animated movies This wouldn’t be a movie magazine without a section dedicated to one of the most culturally influential mediums in Japan: animation. This section isn’t about purely Japanese ‘anime’ though; this is a broader look at animated movies in general. You’ll also find goodold claymation and stop motion movies in here along with 3D animated films. The genre was chosen because all students in the class were so inspired by Japanese anime.

Chicken Run was the first feature length stop-motion film produced by Aardman Studios (who’s other work includes the Wallace and Gromit series). In the years when 3D CG films were becoming big, it was great to see an almost entirely analogue movie be released. The animation style, mixed with the quirky British humor makes it really enjoyable to watch.
rs Tweedy, rs Tweedy, he chickens e revolting!
25
In an epic struggle, farm owner Mr. Tweedy is attacked by the chickens and screams out to Mrs. Tweedy (his wife), “the chickens are revolting!” It’s a simple pun: revolting means “抵抗している”, but it can also mean “極めて不快“. It made me chuckle, and it’s great watching a pile of chickens tackle an old man.

If you are an old anime fan, you must have heard about Neon Genesis Evangelion. The old TV animation series came out in 1995. Evangelion 2.0 is the second part. It’s a story about teenage boys and girls controlling giant Evangelions to fight with perfect angels. Every battle is different and cool. You can feel how powerful the enemys and how smart the humans are. I learned Japanese by watching this BTW.
GIVE HER BACK
27
In this scene the main character fights the 10th angel. The heroine, Ayanami, has been consumed by the angel, and the hero, Shinji, wants to get her back. The battery of the Eva he is piloting is empty however, so he has to try something that is very dangerous.

Fantastic Mr.Fox is a typical Wes Anderson movie. It is like a river that you can just jump in and go along with the stream. A journey of meditation. I don’t know whether it’s the lines or the scenes that make me start thinking about myself when I watch the movie. I’d also recommend The Isle of Dogs for the same reason (also by Wes Anderson).
29
This scene is from the end of the movie when Mr. Fox is on his way back home. On the road, he sees a wolf, and even though there is no conversation, they raise their fists in salute.

I love the Toy Story Series, and part three is my favorite. The story made me think about various things. The way the children play in the kindergarten feels like it’s real. The place where they escape was interesting and really funny. Also the toy monkey is funny in a strange way. Watch how Woody changes his mind in the movie; it’s right at the end a good part to look forward to.

Woody makes a decision to start a new life, and he says goodbye to his life-long friend. I burst into tears during this scene.

I used to read this manga. I was interested in this movie because I can do a little sign language. I recommended it because it makes you think about those who are hard of hearing very much, and also about the coflicts of adolescence.

A sweet story with cute characters, and the insiunation of social problems. Whomever you are, you’ll find something interesting. The most impressive scene i think, is the reaction of the sloth hearing a joke. I remember the whole movie theater laughing so loudly in this scene. On a side note (豆知識), Gazelle (the goat) is dubbed by Shakira!!

The fox and the bunny cop want to ask Flash (the sloth) some questions. The fox tells a joke and the sloth laughs really slowly. He then turns to tell the other sloth the joke and it’s so painfully slow, it’s hilarious.

When I first saw the trailer of this movie, I thought it would be a kid’s movie, and nothing interesting. But when I saw it with a friend, my mind was changed. I cried. It was so heart-felt and heartwarming, and also exciting and funny too. After I saw the movie, I felt more confident about following my dreams and now I know that nothing is more important than family.

I changed this movie from Almost a Love Story to this because I watched this one recently, and I also think it’s better. The movie is about a teenage boy’s regret in love during the period of cultural revolution in China. Although the movie is old, I can still relate to the emotions. By the way, Jiang Wen the director, is my favorite Chinese director. I recommend his other movies, too.

In this scene, the hero goes to the heroine’s room and sees a picture on her wall. It’s her picture, but it’s not real; it’s just her imagination. There was actually no photo. The whole movie is actually him remembering his youth. When the hero sees these pictures, it’s like taking a bite out of a lemon, for both him and the viewer. They’re bittersweet memories. The pictures are an important part to understanding the movie.

This movie is one of the greatest Australian movies ever made. It tells the simple story of a family full of love who want to keep their house from being taken by an airport expansion. The father, Darryl, is such a great dad and such a strong character in the movie; and this made so many Australians laugh when it came out. It’s a quintessential piece of Australian culture.

Darryl’s daugter travels overseas for her honeymoon and brings him back a cheap souvenier. Even though it’s obviously NOT a samurai sword opener he still really likes it, and wants to display it in the “pool room”: a special room in the house with a pool table and lots of different tropheys from around the world. I saw this movie by chance on TV when I was the member of a brass band. It makes me feel nostalgic about those days... all the tomfoolery of the girls in the movie is funny. I recommend the scene with the senior from the baseball club when she shouts “lose!” at him during the baseball game. I want you to watch it because it’s quite an exciting, cool comedy!
49 Ready to perform, the Swing Girls weren’t able to join in the competition. At the last minute however, they were given a chance. The best scene is where the girls were late and burst onto stage. During their performance one of the baseball team members says this.

I like this movie because the story is similar to my high school life. I think the plot of the movie is new. I have never watched a movie that has a plot like this before. I can say it is one of the best Thai movies to recommend.

Dying to survive might have been the most popular movie in China in 2018. The story is realistic and quite moving. However, there are also several comedy parts that balance the tragic atmosphere well. Because of this movie, lots of people started to think about medicine copyright and the patients who struggle between money and life. Nice movie.

When the sun gets old, it will burn out and explode. Humans have made 10,000 giant engines that can push the Earth out of our solar system. To get enough velocity, the Earth needs to use Jupiter as a slingshot... I still can remember feeling of being tiny seeing Jupiter in the sky. This movie is different because it’s not about single hero, and not on a spaceship: humans bring earth with them.
57 The earth is being pushed by huge engines, to save it from the gravity spike with Jupiter. The last of these great, fading engines is firing. They discover that there is not enough power to push the earth away from Jupiter, so they try to use the atmosphere from both planets to get some leverage.

Hi, this is Cao from China. Thank you for reading this movie magazine. I never thought there would be a year where people in the whole world would be stuck at home because of COVID-19. But I’m quite enjoying staying at home and having these Zoom lessons. It’s a kinda fun experience making a magazine by telework. I hope this magazine could bring you some good movies that can make your time indoors better. Also, I hope everyone stays healthy and cool. We can throw out this pandemic with our effort. Keep it up!
Thank you for reading. How was it? Was there any movies you were interested in? There are other interesting things even if they’re very old. I’d be happy if you could take the opportunity to watch an old movie! I think you probably know Toy Story. You can watch it many times over, discover new things each time. You’ll laugh and enjoy yourself with Swing Girls and the nonsense in it when you eventually come around to watching it. Thank you for really reading till the end!
I’m not very good at English. However, everyone taking this class was very kind and I was really saved. It was my first time to make a magazine, and it was difficult to think of sentences and convey them in an easy-to-understand manner. But it was a lot of fun to make one thing together as a class. I would like to thank everyone for making this a very enjoyable experience for us all.

I really wanted to say thank you for this relaxed and happy class time. And also for the flexible schedule. This was my first full English class; the feeling of communicating with others in English was fresh and made me reflect on my vocabulary. The teacher was always tolerant and patient with my delays, which made me feel more apologetic. Maybe my intention to change was not strong enough. It’s like J.Cole’s lyrics, “The only real changes come from inside.” Anyway, I hope our connection can last longer than this course.
I was lucky to choose this class and meet Mr. Brotherton, who was both humorous, enthusiastic and kind. It was a really relaxing class, and I didn’t feel any sense of distance from the teacher. And I learned a lot here, which makes me feel very happy. If I have a chance, I’ll turn on my camera *hahahahaha*. (Because I my hair has grown really long, it’s always messy).
This was the first time for me to make a magazine and I had never used InDesign before. Thank you Mr. Brotherton for sharing all the InDesign tips; I can design my own pages now. I also enjoyed the time talking with my dear classmates. Thank you for letting me know so many interesting movies; even though I have watched most of them before, that just means we have similar tastes, which is a nice thing. Because of COVID-19, we can only talk through the software Zoom. Maybe we can meet each other some time in the future after things get better. It was a very nice experience in this class, and I’ll see you guys around.

Parada Sukkrasanti Because of the corona virus, we had to make this magazine together on Zoom. It was so sad that couldn’t meet face to face in class and had to do it online, but from this new way of taking a class, I got some experience that i wouldn’t have been able to in any normal situation. I want to say thank you to you all in class that made it so funny even during this crisis. THANKS EVERYONE!

Media is a powerful tool. Movies change the way we see the world. Dake-san recommended Swing Girls, so one night at Tsutaya with my wife, we picked up a copy (I must note, it’s rare for us to find a movie we can both enjoy together). And something special happened: my wife and I laughed all the way through the movie. It created a special memory for us. I can’t express how special that is. Yes, it was a great movie, but I honestly belive that the most important thing was the great student recommending it. Which brings me to a final comment: thanks to you all for getting this magazine together; Sekiyama-san, Dake-chan, Min-chan, Cao-kun and Sun-kun, Parada-san and sliding-safe Jerry. Hopefully we can go back to Seika sometime soon, and I can sit down and have lunch with you all. Until then; stay cool.
