This classic Mansard-style home was built soon after the great fire of 1879. It was the last structure to fall to that horrendous blaze that swept through what is now the town’s Historic District, and the current house was built on the charred timbers of its predecessor. The 5,000 square foot home has seen significant upgrades to the interior.

Step back into the Cape May of more than 100 years ago and see how the wealthy lived and played at the town’s only Victorian house museum. The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 18

The program will focus on submarine warfare in the North Atlantic during World War II. Special emphasis will be placed on submarine actions in the Cape May Area. The program will include a presentation by Dr. Robert Heinly on the roles of Ft. Miles and our tower and bunker in this effort, the role of Naval Air Station Cape May, the building of the canal, the sinking of the U.S.S. Jacob Jones and the surrender of U-858. Also featured will be a segment on submarine warfare from the classic TV series, “Victory at Sea,” recollections of local veterans of anti-submarine warfare, and a discussion on local submarine lore (fact or fiction?) 20 Years of History: Cape May’s Center for Community Arts

2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the Center for Community Arts (CCA) and its 17th collaboration with MAC for annual exhibits of African-American life and history in Cape May. This year, CCA’s Community History Project annual exhibit celebrates these anniversaries with photographs and objects that tell the stories of CCA’s programs and people - - 20 years of exhibits; art and music; the John and Janet Nash African-American History Archive and walking tours; the rehabilitation of the once-segregated Franklin Street School; children’s arts and culture programs throughout the lower Cape; adult arts programs; and, its community radio station, WCFA 101.5 FM - - all created and developed by CCA’s pioneer founding mothers and the volunteers that have followed them.
