The John P. Forsythe House In the early years of the 20th century, the developers of the East Cape May project had lofty goals, taking several steps to ensure that Beach Avenue would become the classiest street in the project. Toward that end, they made Beach Avenue nearly twice as wide as any of the other streets, and laid out house lots nearly twice as large as on any of the other streets in the project. They also required that houses be built at least 20 feet back from the curb and that they cost at least $5,000, a significant sum in those days. The John P. Forsythe House at 1601 Beach Ave. is one of the largest of the first generation homes that arose as part of this project at a cost of $35,000, greatly exceeding the minimum cost requirement set by the developers. Its “shingle style” was popular for the seashore “cottages” of the period, and even the porch posts are shingle-covered. The wrap-around porch was also in keeping with late-Victorian building tradition, giving its owners and guests ample space to sit and enjoy the cool ocean breezes while protected from the blazing sun. Enjoy your visit as you see how the goals of those developers from more than a century ago have been fulfilled in this magnificent, historic home. Cape May’s Designer Show House 2018 • Page 7

ENTRY VESTIBULE/PARLOR
Transition to Luxury
Parlor Rendering - Meghan Hammond of Greystone Interiors
Entry Vestibule
Capturing the colors of nature with handmade wall art, artist enhanced demi-lune table and sparkling overhead light, you transition from the beach to the luxury of ‘Fan-Ta-Sea.’
Parlor
The essence of the parlor was inspired by the original 1910 architectural beam separating the parlor and stairwell. All the woodwork -- beams with subtle lighting, wainscot above fireplace and bar, and bar itself -- are all new. Looking for a room with sophistication, warmth, and livable luxury, the owners wanted a room where one person or a group would feel comfortable and entertained...play cards, shoot pool, or watch “the” game on TV with libations and snacks at the bar. Stay, linger, and enjoy the details. Page 10 • Cape May’s Designer Show House 2018

FAMILY ROOM (THE ATLANTIC)
Heaven on Earth
“My day is done, and I am like a boat drawn on the beach, listening to the dance-music of the tide in the evening.” -- Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds
This enchanted sanctuary of sunset-inspired golden hues and rich plum accents is the perfect gathering place for family and friends. The largest common space in the house, this great room offers two separate sitting areas - both with views of the Atlantic. Every effort was taken to utilize the homeowner’s artwork and furniture; whether a painting or showcasing a precious family heirloom. One can choose to be seated by the original granite fireplace listening to music from the surround sound available throughout the house or by the family entertainment center to watch a movie. Please take note of the serene pastel works of renowned local artist, Stan Sperlak, on the impressive limestone mantel. The wallpaper is an Elizabethan-style floral given a contemporary treatment. A custom rug was created specifically for the room pulling from the color pallet utilized by the designers. The original pocket doors provide the option of privacy, a feature created by craftsmen of the past. Dramatic window treatments with distinctive hardware are stunning but also a cue to look out the windows to the glorious outside world – a reminder that this is heaven on earth – life at the beach. Before the stairs is the foyer, with Hartmann Trellis wallpaper by Thibaut and a quaint bench to sit before heading upstairs or down to the basement.

POWDER ROOM (THE SEA PEARL)
A Hidden Gem “A full moon sprinkled the black ocean with diamonds, and she could imagine fairies dancing in the silver foam that laced the huge, dark waves.” --Patricia Hagan, Ocean of Dreams
Just as if when an oyster is cracked-opened and something precious is discovered inside, upon entering this powder room, it becomes apparent that this is a hidden gem. The door is original to the home but has been relocated to this entryway. The beautiful glass is a detail that adds charm and illusion to this space. Elegantly painted floral bouquets in beautiful colors is reminiscent of 18th century hand-printed wallpaper patterns. The boldness of the wallcovering is just another reminder that big designs can work in small spaces.

KITCHEN
Perennial Antiquity Just as weather changes moods, so does palette and depth. With a
historic house of this stature, the kitchen naturally wanted to portray a mix of what has been and what has yet to come. The Summer House Design Group and Hargest Custom Cabinetry chose to use the existing pine cabinetry as a jumping off point, to drive the theme and overall feel of this space. We felt that incorporating different textures was very important so that each piece makes a statement, and the use of Lucite, sisal, rattan and distressed finishes help transport visitors into the story of the house. Guests also can’t help but notice the dynamic blooms in the wallpaper, offering a cheerful atmosphere throughout all seasons.

BUTLER’S PANTRY
Black Cabs & Coffee Transitional spaces do not always have to be mundane. The Summer House Design Group and Hargest Custom Cabinetry wanted to take advantage of this hall to give the homeowners beautiful millwork, used to house and fulfill their caffeine fix. The neutral color scheme of black cabinetry and sandy grass cloth act as a visual palette cleanser between the kitchen and family room, while the space simultaneously serves as a valued extension of the heart of the home: the kitchen.

HALL (THE KING’S CROWN)
Old & New Treasures
“Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.” -- Sarah Kay Upon entering the house, the wallpaper that adorns all the hallways cannot go unnoticed. The design is an elegant golden metallic damask motif that evokes the glamorous romanticism and poetic era of the 18th and 19th centuries. On each of the three floors, the landings offer a place to pause, share a moment or simply appreciate the beauty and magnitude of this abode. Every effort was taken to utilize the homeowner’s artwork and furniture; whether a painting or showcasing a precious family heirloom. Starting on the main floor at the foot of the stairs adjacent to the billiards room, a wink and a nod is given to the homeowner’s love of dogs - with the pedigree of a family tree. As you progress up the stair, please take note of the serene pastel works of renowned local artist, Stan Sperlak. On the second landing of the master suite hallway, original leaded glass windows reflect the artistry of craftsmen from a bygone era, allowing the natural light to illuminate the hall. Nearby is a hand carved, gilded Venetian console and mirror in the Louis XVI style. A Martha settee sofa is accompanied by the family’s eglomise mirror and secretary desk. On the third floor, is an all glass arched cabinet curio with touch dimmer lighting that shines on old and new personal treasures.

BEDROOM (MERMAID)
Shimmer, Shine & Glamour Like the shimmery and shiny scales of a mermaid, this tween ensuite delivers shimmer, shine and glamour for many ages to come. The small occupant of the room had several requests: that it must have lavender and mirrors and suitable for the various stages in life! We wanted to achieve an elegant, old world feel that was suited to the house’s age, but still wanted to have a fresh and modern feel. The focal point of the room is the large half canopy bed, custom-made from Casamance fabrics imported from France. The lavender iridescent taffeta is highlighted by an appliqué of delicate florals in a contrasting cut velvet and embroidery which is both sophisticated and modern. The walls are covered in a shimmery and metallic wallpaper from Carl Robinson featuring a delicate and glittery lavender feather pattern, embossed on the silvery grey wallpaper. Other notable pieces are the chaise lounge custom-made from a velvet striped fabric and custom embroidered throw pillows, all made from the same French fabric line. For the study and vanity area, a lively painted desk from the Cynthia Rowley collection was used while a cream side chair with fur pouf from the same collection accentuates the playful vanity. Mirrored furniture, such as the night stands and side table are carried throughout the room, as well as large Venetian mirrors featured in the bedroom and bathroom. In the bathroom, a custom vanity from the Nina Green Signature Series was used, featuring a crisscross mirror pattern on the lower doors, with a grey and silver stain on alder for the main cabinet. The side drawer features a plug, perfect for hairdryers and curling irons. The vanity and shower wall is highlighted by a floor to ceiling mosaic tile, featuring various cut marbles in a playful flower pattern. The surrounding tile floor, wainscoting and trim feature a white marble. The Kohler fixtures are a chrome finish, which is not only easy to keep clean, but incorporates the shiny finish to match the other elements in the adjoining rooms. The wall sconces from Currey and Company feature the same chrome finish while the crystal bud chandelier, also from Currey and Company, is a matching, yet smaller version from the bedroom. Altogether the materials and colors throughout the adjoining spaces create a traditional feel with a modern touch, perfect for many years to come.

MASTER BEDROOM SUITE (BEACHFRONT SUITE)
Gaze Upon the Waves When you think of a home at the beach, you think of casual and basic design; perhaps white slip-covered sofas and doormats with seashell designs. But not every person with a home on the beach chooses that sensibility. That is the case with the owners of this stately turn-of-the century home. There is no denying the location; all you have to do is look out the windows of the “Beach Front Suite” and gaze upon the waves of the Atlantic to know where you are. However, we have replaced the common casual design of most beach homes with a calm elegance: warm woods, elegant fabrics, and textural gold shimmering grass cloth. This retreat features the sleeping area, two baths, and a sitting area and will provide a quiet retreat from the activity in the rest of the house. Additional components include embroidered window treatments and other textiles that reflect the elegant taste of the homeowners. While function remains important in the design, the trims on the pillows and window textiles and the sophisticated artwork and accessories do not deny the preference for an elegant private retreat. The retreat includes two marble baths...one for ‘Him’ and one for ‘Her.’ Cream marble was used in both baths but ‘His’ was designed with a more masculine touch by using a darker walnut wood for the vanity and a simpler overall design. ‘Her’ bathroom is larger and includes white cabinetry and more elaborate tile designs in the shower and on the floor. It also features a free-standing soaking tub and more feminine fixtures. The Sitting Area was designed for relaxing and watching TV or having coffee privately from the rest of the guests early in the morning. The sofa faces the TV and is aligned with the beautiful built-in crafted by Hargest Custom Cabinetry housing coffee and wine (for evening relaxation!) Should one prefer to take in the view, the doorway opens directly to the second floor porch for privately viewing the sunset.

JACK & JILL BEDROOMS & BATH/LAUNDRY THE BEDROOMS: These two guest rooms are different from one another but fun and inviting in their own ways. ‘The Driftwood Room’ is a navy and white color palette enhanced with elegant accents from the sea. Textiles play an important part in defining the space. A simple color palette is not boring; it brings a sense of calm and sophistication. Add upscale art and beautiful lighting and the room becomes a luxurious place for rest and quiet. ‘The Sea Turtle Room’ introduces a joyful palette of shades of turquoise and twin beds for flexibility in accommodations. Turtles plus turquoise equals “happy!” The mix of colorful fabrics are gorgeous examples of some of the finer textiles on the market. The varying styles of the furniture pieces keep the design interesting and suitable for guests of all ages. THE BATH: This bath was kept in a beautiful neutral of Carerra marble and clean white wood. Since natural light is limited here, the white palette gives a brighter feel and spa-like indulgence. The tub provides a practical place for bathing the kids or adult relaxation, and is made more attractive by the frameless glass doors. The clear large doors showcase the beautiful decorative faceted Carerra mosaic tile and make it easy to step in and out. The white vanity and adjacent drawers were designed for optimal storage but the traditional style provides an elegant blend of the past and the present. THE LAUNDRY ROOM: The laundry room can be a mundane space, but this one is styled with beautiful cabinetry complemented by shimmering quartz. A unique sink and a silver-toned washer and dryer make time spent in that space more enjoyable.

THIRD FLOOR BEDROOM (SEAGLASS)
You Are Cordially Invited... For the Sea Glass guest room, the walls are blue, the color of the sky & sea, a color considered beneficial to body and mind and the most universally liked color of all. The secondary color is a creamy natural, the color of sand and the streaks through the seaside sunsets. Accent colors of ambers and golds are also seen in those stunning sunsets. The furniture has a weathered finish with a grey wash coat giving it a rich patina... a refined driftwood appearance, if you will. The design intent of Harvey-Burton Interiors was to create a polished space that invites you into this classic architecture yet offers a relaxing, comfortable room. Blue sea glass is uncommon, which makes it special, just as you are special guests of these gracious hosts. Welcome!

GYM & SPA AREA, OFFICE
An Oasis of “Fan-ta-Sea” of Mind and Body.... Designhaus Interiors created two new functional spaces as part of the third floor of this Victorian seaside resort home. To be consistent with the Victorian style home, a sophisticated 1920’s Parisian European finish called “Ceruse” was used in all custom cabinetry. A unique modern feel of style and colors were chosen intentionally to provide an in-house sanctuary. The new Gym and adjoining Office overlook the beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean and are bridged in the center by a powder room and sauna area. The space is on the upper level of the master suite, an extension connected by a spiral stair case! The open environment of the Gym layout encourages energy and promotes focus, designed with sophisticated yet understated colors and patterns, elegant rich fabrics with colors of soft steel gray combined with textured coral and organic motif patterns. Ergonomic tiles save the floor and self from wear and tear. Wall mirrors make the space visually larger, and allow one to watch their own progress in a well-lit atmosphere. The modern design Office offers tranquility of “Mind”! You are seated with a view facing the serene tranquil ocean; a view that makes up for the stress of the day. Non-cluttered and organized space promotes mental concentration and focus. Lighting is used to highlight points of interest from the cozy sitting area to the detailed elements of the bar. The fabrics and colors range in shades of grays, whites and black, thus lending a modern style to a sophisticated scene combined with the European 1920’s “Ceruse” finish. A traditional finish adds a welcome sleek texture to a custom-made book case unit and desk designed with a non-traditional style. The area has a few ocean-themed accessories connecting the interior of the house to its location on the beach. Page 28 • Cape May’s Designer Show House 2018

THIRD FLOOR GUEST BEDROOM (STARFISH)
Time to Renew As Harvey-Burton Interiors began the design for this guest bedroom, the term “elegance” came to mind... a “Star” in this grand beachfront house in America’s oldest seaside resort. Gold, the color of wealth, success and status, a nod to the history of the house, combined with ivories became the color story. Although a neutral theme, the mix of textures and a hint of blue-gray here and there keeps it interesting. Starfish directly across from Sea Glass shares the same furniture collection with its slightly weathered finish. This lends some continuity to these two guest rooms. Wallpapered walls, velvet headboard and classic patterns all speak to time-honored elegance, but reflect a more current twist. The result is a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy for that long weekend getaway. Just as Starfish can regenerate and renew, guests staying in this special bedroom will do the same.
Nancy enjoys helping clients Harvey-Burton transform their spaces into beautiful, unique homes that reflect their per Interiors sonalities, interests and lifestyles.

GUEST BATHROOM
Black & White & Brass All Over This small and narrow bathroom had to serve many purposes and it was imperative that every inch was maximized to its fullest extent, without losing the glamour and sophistication that it deserved. We started from the bottom up with a classic black and white marble mosaic floor. Next, we incorporated a classic white clay tile for the wainscoting, followed by a playful and colorful wallpaper in a classic chinoiserie style. The custom sink vanity and vanity table are from the Nina Green Signature Series cabinetry, featuring black lacquer style paint with mirrored insets with a black marble vanity top. A hand-painted sink featuring brass accents gives unexpected style to this otherwise small sink console. A wall-mount faucet, featured in brushed brass was imperative for this small sink area. The brushed brass finish was used for all Kohler fixtures and accessories from the shower wall to the Currey and Company wall. The final crowning piece is the Handcrafted pagoda light from Charles Edwards of England. The result is a sophisticated and whimsical bathroom to brighten up any day.

Summer Day at the Beach
“Meet me there, where the sea meets the sky...” -- Oksana Rus
Views from this bedroom inspired the selected color palette allowing designers to bring the outdoors in. Sun-ray yellow, pink and lavender with sea grass greens anchored with the backdrop of cottage white create a perfect retreat for the lady of the day. The crisp white bedroom furniture accentuates the light and airy feel of a summer day at the beach - a perfect view whether inside or out.

An Oasis for the Weary
“Hark, now hear the sailors cry, smell the sea, and feel the sky let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic...” -- Van Morrison
After adventures along the Cape, exploring the inland waterways and discovering all manner of treasures and wildlife, this masculine bedroom is an oasis for the weary traveler. With a view of the great Atlantic just steps away, the ikat trellis wallpaper harkens the bohemian in all of us. Incorporating precious family keepsakes adds to the spirit and essence of this design. Whether seated at the writing desk, or on the pillowed bench, the space gives pause to reflect. With a nod to the artisans of the past, the headboard of the bed was constructed in 1879 by the renowned Ivins & Brother Furniture Bedding Co. of Philadelphia, Pa. The room is enhanced by the natural tones of the carpet; the room’s original hardwood floor has been removed to be utilized in another part of the house.

CUSTOM VIDEO, AUDIO & CONTROL SYSTEMS
A “Smart” Fan-Ta-Sea While the beach location may often be the star of the show, in-home entertaining and entertainment are high priorities at “Our Fan-Ta-Sea.” In addition to the large screen television in the family room, there are multiple TVs throughout the home, plus nine separate zones for customized audio. Each zone can play a different audio source, or the homeowners can group them together at will. The result is family and guests can enjoy a myriad of choices of television, quality streaming or audio content in virtually every room of the house. For optimum convenience and peace of mind, the entire home automation system – including audio, video, lighting, heat and AC -- can be controlled by in-wall touch screens, smart phones or tablets... from the couch, the beach or anywhere in the world. Working behind the scenes, an enterprise quality Wi-Fi system blankets the home with robust strength to serve the multiple devices connected to the wireless network. When you are at the shore you still need good cell phone service inside your home. To provide great coverage inside this cell signal-challenged home, a cellular repeater was installed. The owners, designers and architect thought of it all. Hi-Fi Sales just helped make this home a SMART Fan-Ta-Sea! You could say the home’s IQ was greatly increased.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN
The Great Outdoors We are extremely excited and honored to be involved with this year’s designer show house, whose owners gave us complete design flexibility to bring our vision to life. The process for creating a quality, innovative landscape starts long before we put a shovel in the ground! We started with a detailed meeting with Pat and Kristen where we established a nice feel for their personality. After the initial consultation, we took a full tour of the INSIDE of the home. The goal of premium landscaping is to draw the homeowner outside of the house into the yard. This interior tour provides us with interior views of the landscape as well as important design cues that we can incorporate into the landscape plan. Armed with everyone’s ideas and expectations, it was time to hit the drafting table. The massive house stood tall and proud on this exclusive corner however we felt that there was a visual disconnect between the sidewalk and house itself. We created a low retaining wall with the visual goal of placing the house on a trophy stand as well as providing a more substantial base. An added bonus was the creation of a sidewalk-level planting area to soften the retaining wall. We matched the retaining wall material to the Philadelphia Stone foundation of the home, including the intricate details of the pointing of the mortar. We capped off the retaining wall with the elegant look of bluestone, then hid low voltage lighting to bring the texture of the retaining wall to life after the sun goes down. The finishing touch for the retaining wall is the formal front entrance, stairway and columns. Selecting plants for this project was a challenge in itself. Harsh winds, salt spray and sandblasting are just a few of the challenges we faced. I believe we came up with gardens that are period to the house, create three-season color and will stand the test of time. Once again, when the sun goes down, premium CAST Lighing fixtures illuminate the front porch columns and architectural details as well as line walkways and planting beds. Our goal in lighting this gem is to make a bold statement with the lighting but not have any lights shining in one’s eyes as they approach the front door. All fixtures feature energy efficient LED bulbs and can be controlled through the house’s whole-house electrical control system as well as an app on a smart device. In keeping with technology, we integrated the ultimate in watering efficiency into the irrigation system. The lawn areas are kept green using micro spray sprinkler heads. The planting areas, as well as the window boxes and planters, are irrigated using premium NETA FIM drip lines. Watering cycles are controlled by a weather station which calculates watering times based on evaporation rates, run off, current environmental conditions and a five-year history of rainfall. Lundholm Landscaping uses absolutely no chemicals in creating or maintaining our landscapes. We take an organic, holistic approach to keeping our lawn and gardens healthy and thriving! Our approach is to feed the soil and let the soil feed the plants. Instead of dumping six applications of fertilizer onto the lawn (most of which winds up in our waterways) we apply three applications of SUMA GROW bionutritional supplement. SUMA GROW introduces nutrients and microorganisms which create a micro environment in the soil which nourishes roots, builds rich, healthy, sustaining soil as well as naturally deters insects. We hope you enjoy this landscape as much as we enjoyed creating it! Check out our website at Lundholmlandscaping.com!

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities and the rebirth of Cape May MAC was formed in September 1970 at a critical juncture in Cape May’s history, when historic preservationists banded together to save the landmark 1879 Emlen Physick Estate (with its mansion and outbuildings, vacant and vandalized, on eight overgrown acres) from being bulldozed to make way for tract housing. MAC’s leaders mounted a political revolution to achieve their goals. Running on a platform of quality of life and historic preservation, Bruce Minnix, one of four MAC founders, led a reform ticket to victory in the November 1972 elections. The Emlen Physick Estate in 1970 His first actions as mayor in 1973 were to accept a HUD grant, purchase the Physick Estate for the City of Cape May and immediately lease it to MAC for its restoration and operation. MAC’s founders were kept busy with the restoration of the Physick Estate. An army of volunteers repaired leaking roofs, sanded and painted, reglazed missing windows and cleared jungle growth from the grounds to bring the Estate back from the brink. The decision to operate the mansion as a Victorian house museum has continued to this day. MAC soon began programs that went far beyond restoring the Physick Estate. One of its major initiatives was to extend MAC’s interpretative net over the entire community with guided walking tours of Cape May’s Historic District, trolley tours, and historic house tours. MAC added special events as fund-raisers, including Victorian Weekend over the Columbus Day holiday, now in its 45th year. The Christmas Candlelight House Tour put Cape May on the path of becoming a major Christmas destination. As Cape May’s fortunes rose in the 1980s in response to a national craze for Victoriana, so did the range and complexity of MAC’s tours and activities. From the single trolley tour route of the 1970s, a second was added in 1983 and a third in 1985. Christmas trolley tours were introduced to flesh out the holiday season, and special events were launched for Page 56 • Cape May’s Designer Show House 2018
April and May. While the sum of these experiences was positive and pointed to a bright future, it took one particular event to catapult MAC to its next phase of growth— the “acquisition,” through a long-term lease, of the Cape May Lighthouse. Under the lease, MAC assumed responsibility for the restoration and operation of the Lighthouse as a museum. In 1987, the ground floor was opened to the public. The following year, safety improvements allowed the public to climb to the top of the tower. The Lighthouse also housed MAC’s first Museum Shop. MAC continued to make great strides in its efforts to extend the tourism season, in partnership with the business community. It launched the Cape May Music Festival, expanded Christmas programming, and added September’s Cape May Food and Wine Celebration, and Halloween Happenings in October. MAC also partners with other area non-profits and area historic destinations. The Carriage House at the Physick Estate also underwent a major overhaul in 1997 and was converted to a multipurpose facility, housing a space for changing exhibits, a museum shop and visitors center, and the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom (opened in 1999), which utilizes both the interior horse stalls and a tented patio area. Perhaps MAC’s most ambitious undertaking of the past decade has been its efforts to interpret Cape May’s important World War II history. The centerpiece of this venture was the successful completion of MAC’s third major restoration project – the World War II Lookout Tower (Fire Control Tower No. 23) on Sunset Boulevard. After leasing the structure from the State Park Service and raising more than $1 million in grant funding, a year of construction led to the opening of the tower to the public in the spring of 2009. In its first 47 years, MAC has been a major force behind Cape May’s dramatic rebirth. As of 2017, with strong Board leadership, an annual audience of some 270,000 and a staff of 150 (25 full-time and 125 parttime employees, making MAC one of Cape May’s largest employers), MAC stands poised to help Cape May sustain its preservation success story for years to come. MAC’s membership has grown to nearly 4,000, and this support helps ensure the continuation of the organization’s preservation, interpretation and cultural enrichment efforts. We hope you will join our labor of love. -- By B. Michael Zuckerman, Ph.D.
