A fully accessible Visitors’ Orientation Center and Museum Shop carrying souvenirs, books and maritime items are located in the Oil House

The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

One regular crime committed in the Victorian era was the abduction of children for their clothes. Well-dressed youth would be captured, stripped, and left running home in their underwear. This was one of the reasons chaperones were often employed.

Keep your horse at home

What was life like in the 1890s? For one thing, there were strict rules governing bathing attire. An 1897 ordinance threatened fines or jail time to those who dared to venture on the beach between the hours of 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. without proper attire. The same ordinance forbade taking a horse or mule into the water during certain times. The ordinance did say, however, that “buff bathing” was allowed on a certain section of beach up until 6 a.m. 15

Talking to dead people

On top of believing in aliens, Victorians were also strong believers in hypnotism, divination, and spiritualism. Events where attendees could be hypnotized, speak to the dead, or have their futures predicted were extremely popular, and hucksters would make huge money off of gullible Victorians. 16

Located at the Ocean Street end of the Washington Street Mall, the Information Booth sells tickets for any of our tours and events and provides answers to any questions you might have about what to do in Cape May. The trolley stop for our tours is located across the street from the Information Booth.

Located in the 1876 Carriage House on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. You may purchase tickets here for any tours or events. By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer. 25

Creepy Victorian food

Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 26

Visit the renowned Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey that tells the story of this hero of the Underground Railroad and combine it with the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour that is part of the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom. The Harriet Tubman Museum officially opened in 2021 to national accolades. Cape May was part of the Underground Railroad and this 2.5 hour combination tour tells the story of those dangerous days. Hear how legendary anti-slavery fighter, Harriet Tubman, walked these streets, as did prominent railroad businessman and former slave, Stephen Smith, whose railroad cars carried hundreds to freedom. The tour begins at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth and travels through parts of Cape May and West Cape May, with stops along the way, including the Mt. Zion Cemetery, and ends with a tour at the Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey.

HARRIET TUBMAN’S LIFE & WORK IN CAPE MAY Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to Canada, she returned to the states and earned money working in hotels and for private families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives. The New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in Cape May. Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846. 40

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Celebrate Juneteenth with the George A. Johnson Quintet, on June 19th at 3pm in our beautiful and acoustically amazing sanctuary, for only a $10 donation, as part of our monthly Jazz Vespers series. Our sanctuary is also open for prayer or quiet time from 9-11am on Mondays and Wednesdays. A deacon will be available if you have questions, but will not intrude if you want your solitude in our sacred space.
