Quackery: Toxic and shocking?

Toxic arsenic was widely consumed by Victorians. Women believed it had qualities which made skin appear younger, and so it was a major ingredient in many cosmetics – whereas men would consume arsenic pills as a way of stimulating their libido. Unsurprisingly, these products caused extreme sickness and led to many fatalities before people understood the true power of the substance. Also in practice was electrotherapy, or shock therapy, which was used to treat multiple medical problems, including gout, muscle pain, rheumatism (arthritis), and liver problems. What was the complicated, medical and scientific explanation behind this? This so-called “technology” was about as intricate as trying to scare the hiccups out of someone by yelling “Boo!” Essentially, the hope was that applying electricity would shock the problem out of the patient.

Where’s Waldo?

Victorians didn’t always trust doctors — especially when body snatching was such a common problem. High demand for cadavers in medical schools created an underground market for dead bodies. Eerily enough, some body snatchers didn’t even wait until their targets died. 20

The Widow of Windsor

When Queen Victoria lost her husband Albert in 1861, the Queen went into immediate mourning, and wore black for the next 40 years until her death. During this extended mourning period, she generally lived in seclusion and didn’t attend public events, earning herself the nickname the “Widow of Windsor.” Ironically, Victoria disliked black at funerals, and ensured that the streets of London were decorated in purple and white when she died.

Cape May MAC is embarking on a capital improvement project to install an HVAC system and fire suppression in the 1879 Physick House Museum. We’ve secured the planning and capital grants but now we need the matching funds. Your contribution to help us meet that match is greatly appreciated. Together, we will bring these plans through to fruition.

As well as mourning loved ones, there was another, more practical

50 reason, why so many Victorians wore a lot of black – it was all down to pollution. Industry was booming in the Victorian era, and as such shades pollution was rife – particularly in the cities – meaning that women wore light colors would find their dresses turn shades of grey, of black who and so opted for darker clothing. 36

Down the aisle

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 42

Visiting hours

If a lady was at home in the day she was expected to be properly dressed and prepared for visitors between the hours of 3pm and 5pm. The time visitors could arrive was dependent on how familiar an acquaintance they were, with closer friends and family permitted to visit later in the day. It would have been seen as poor taste for anyone to arrive earlier than 3pm. 52

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 54

CAPE MAY’S EARLY DAYS Since its earliest days, the lower part of Cape May County has been linked to the water. With the tumultuous Atlantic Ocean on one side, the Delaware Bay on the other and lush forest and field between it served its residents well. Early Native Americans thrived, whalers found whales in the ocean and refuge in the bay. All worked the shores and tributaries for birds and shellfish. As the population grew, shipbuilding and coastal trade took on greater importance.

Seeking life on Mars

Buttoned up as they were, Victorians believed that there was life on Mars. Giovanni Schiaparelli, an Italian astronomer, claimed that he had seen artificial waterways on Mars through his telescope. Apparently, these canals were evidence that extraterrestrial beings on the red planet were attempting either travel or commerce. These ideas were generally quite popular and taken seriously by the public, and surprisingly, people would leave money in their wills dedicated to attempts to make contract with extraterrestrial life. 67

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were

lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean Stay very operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. healthy and Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 70

HALLOWEEN IN CAPE MAY

The origins of trick or treat

In this country, trick-or-treating has been a Halloween tradition since the late 1920s. In Britain and Ireland, the tradition of going house-to-house collecting food at Halloween goes back at least as far as the 16th century, as had the tradition of people wearing costumes at Halloween. In 19th century Britain and Ireland, there are many accounts of people going house-to-house in costume at Halloween, reciting verses in exchange for food, and sometimes warning of misfortune if they were not welcomed. While going house-to-house in costume has remained popular among Scots and Irish, the custom of saying “trick or treat” has only recently become common. The activity is prevalent in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Puerto Rico, and northwestern and central Mexico.

The Legend of “Stingy Jack”

People have been making jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack.” According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn’t want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years. Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.” Tours & activities sponsored by Cape May MAC For more information, call 609-884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org

GHOSTS

IN VICTORIAN CAPE MAY Cape May is reputedly one of America’s most haunted towns, and nowhere else is this reputation so well-earned as at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s original haunted house. For years, Cape May MAC’s staffers had felt they were not alone in the house, but it was not until psychic medium Craig McManus began his investigations into the town’s paranormal activities that those who were not regular members of the Cape May MAC staff were identified. McManus, who has written several books about Cape May’s hauntings and has documented spirit activity at dozens of the town’s quaint B&B inns and hotel properties, has spent a great deal of time at the Physick house and has identified several of its residents. Most prominent among them is Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who has great energy and a vibrant smile, according to McManus. “This is a ghost who knows everything that is going on in her home,” McManus wrote. He also explained that, after her death, Emilie had stayed on to watch over the house, which had fallen into disrepair before its restoration began in 1970. Dr. Physick’s mother, Frances Ralston, is no longer in the house, according to McManus, but the strong presence she exerted in her lifetime is still felt as “residual energy,” especially in her bedroom on the second floor, the paranormal hot spot of the home. Another resident is Isabelle, or Bella, Mrs. Ralston’s invalid younger sister who died in 1883, shortly after the family moved into the mansion.

Among the unique spir-

Among the its that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s unique spirits dogs. He encountered several in the house on his first visit, that McManus and one romping through the gardens on a later visit. has reported are Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs several of Dr. are about, because they were never allowed in the house Physick’s dogs. by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie,

however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. The estate’s Carriage House also has its resident spirit, which has been heard by several of the Cape May MAC staff whose offices are on the building’s second floor. McManus said this could be one of the servants, possibly a groomsman or driver. One of Cape May MAC’s most popular ghost tours is Seance at the Physick Estate, where McManus leads a group of 25 people through the house to commune with its spirit residents. “Cape May’s original haunted house never disappoints,” McManus wrote about a recent tour. “It was one of the best haunting experiences I have had in my career! “There are very few real haunted mansions of this caliber that are open to the public,” he wrote in his book. “If you love the paranormal, this is a must visit!”
