BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Maes (1983) – BELGIUM Painter, Sculptor, Designer, Art Curator and Director of TM-Art Fine Arts He has had 40 Solo and group exhibitions at Gallery’s and Top Art-fairs Worldwide. His works are drawing the attention of international collectors; his Sculpture designs and paintings are published in the fine art book Contemporary Masters, contemporary Sculptors and art magazines. The artist is influenced by a number of fields, including design, technology, science, architecture, and archaeology, as well as art history. With such innovation evident in his work, The visionary Artist Maes is destined to take the art world by storm. Thomas Maes' works exhibit a rare virtuosity which is instantly striking. An expert colorist, the artist's paintings evoke the abstract canvases of Joan Miró as well as turn of the century Symbolism and even Surrealism. His images are an amalgamation of the natural world with an architectural bent, in which geometric structures connect with amorphous forms. His arrangements are controlled, yet the elements float with a joyous and invigorating freedom. His painstaking technique of preparing his design for weeks and even months before he places oil on canvas is evident in his superb compositions. Maes' oeuvre is wonderfully reminiscent of many movements in the visual arts, while resonating with musical harmony. Born in Belgium, Maes draws his inspiration from his current home in Crete. His works are drawing the attention of international collectors, and his designs have appeared in a book on modern sculpture and are to feature in three more forthcoming books. The artist is influenced by a number of fields, including design, technology, architecture, and archaeology, as well as art history. His work has been shown in art fairs and will be part of upcoming auctions.

In my paintings I reflect aspects of what goes on in our world, reflected in a new parallel universe that exists through art. Using symbolism, I bring different aspects of problems and solutions to the front, encouraging the viewers to think for themselves and giving them the freedom to discover. I try to show what goes on in our mind and our unconscious, so that each person can see some of themselves in the work. I spend a lot of time, sometimes weeks or even months, researching and making preliminary drawings before I even touch the canvas. I prefer oil paint because of the smoothness and the detail you can achieve with it, and I do not think about technique – I paint the way I know it must be for each individual work. Sculptures- design Always passionate by researching and discovering scientific and psychological subjects, studying problems and discovering new possibilities. With all the science and media available constructing modern-classic sculptures out of many different materials. In a world full of hi-tech, I try to give the hi-tech some more soul and natural beauty, by designing and making them fit and in a more nature like environment. 2

Maes at Rome/Italy with ambassador consul of Belgium PRESS RELEASE Under the patronage of Embassy of Peru in Italy Embassy of Norway in Italy Embassy of Belgium in Italy Embassy of Spain in Italy Exhibition "FRAGMENTS of LIGHT AFTER The 11 SEPTEMBER 2001 – 10 YEARS" Maria Pia BARBERI (PERU), Kristin Johanne BERG (NORWAY), Thomas MAES (BELGIUM), Teresa PICORNELL (SPAIN) on the occasion of day of contemporary art promoted by AMACI, the National Association of the Museums of contemporary art in Italy a cura di Costanzo Costantini and Floriana Tondinelli Opening: Thursday, September 15, 2011 hours 19.00-21.00 Location: Gallery Tondinelli address: 128 Via Quattro Fontane, 00184 RomaTel: 06 www.galleriatondinelli.it 4744300 duration: 15 September-8 October 2011 Organisation and press office: Gallery Tondinelli Tel 06 4744300 Time: Monday-Friday 10.00-12.30 and 16.00-19.00 · Saturday October 8, 2011 opening extraordinary for the day of contemporary art promoted by AMACI. Tondinelli Gallery presents from 15 September to 8 October 2011 the exhibition FRAGMENTS of LIGHT AFTER The 11 SEPTEMBER 2001-10 YEARS with Maria Pia Barberi, Kristin Johanne Berg, Thomas Maes, Teresa Picornell, a cura di Costanzo Costantini and Floriana Tondinelli. The day of September 11, 2001 shook everyone, not just the United States, the art is also a moment of reflection, this is the message that artists want to express, on the occasion of this exhibition, the artists chosen by the countries mentioned above are a representation of the fact that that incident has shocked the souls and the people ofaround the world. The gallery was presented already in 2002 an exhibition in homage to the victims of the September 11, 2001, and on the occasion of the commemoration of 10 years is still heard the remembrance of that terrible moment, as well as hope that events so serious may not recur. Maria Pia Barberi (Peru), born in Peru, when he was five years his family moved to Spain where he lived for more than ten years. His rich experience of travel has had a great effect on his artistic training. Back in Peru is greatly impressed by pre-Columbian art. The artist wants to join in his work, the Peruvian and European tradition. The themes of his works vary, but all have a common base emotional appearance, represent the soul or the essence of all humans who fight and seek the light. Kristin Johanne Berg (Norway), the Norwegian artist has works exhibited in gallery a search made of details and color overlays, making an area varied. Momentum expressive tells the Norwegian landscape, as well as pale and rarefied atmosphere. It's an informal air that represented by the artist where time stops and wraps everything it encounters. A restless beauty is one that clearly represents the artist, where the lights are Dim and every accent color defines the contours. Thomas Maes (Belgium), in the painting of the Belgian artist preferred theme is the dream of dialogue between man and the environment. The colours are pastel shades with delicate nuances, the forms are also and well delineated, the atmosphere is suspended between past, present and future. We are in another dimension to a parallel world that live suspended in a space that has its rules, its aromas, its lights. Us is allowed to access, just imagine, the artist takes us into the mystery of existence, thus calling into question the real world, his illusions-disappointments. Teresa Picornell (Spain), the works of Teresa Picornell operating at Palma de Mallorca, want to tell us a story, a bridge between past and present. The artist who exhibited for the fifth time in Italy tries out in this latest cycle of works a new support, with new colours. Each work is an account of an experienced Interior, which the artist expresses through layers of colors and with a formal research linked to varied expressions. In this new cycle painting overlaps creating a wider dimension.

Thomas Maes Fine art magazine: Art Is Spectrum New York

“I

n a world full of high-tech,” says painter Thomas Maes,

“I try to give the high-tech some more soul and natural beauty.” His paintings make good on that promise. Maes mixes a technician’s skill at representation with a Surrealist’s ability to create a world in which realistic objects are placed in a dreamlike framework. He mixes abstract shapes with natural objects, blurring the lines between the physical world and the world of the imagination. A tree may emerge from an abstract platform, or a realistic branch sprout geometric shapes as well as leaves. Computer screens inhabit the same space as totemic shapes that look as if they could have come from the ancient world. But while there is a sense of worlds intersecting in Maes’s work, his images also radiate a peaceful aura. Thanks to his subtle eye for color, his backgrounds evoke sun-filled skies, generating a contemplative air. The artist says that he likes to paint in oils because of “the smoothness and detail you can achieve.” That evenness and intricacy account for his talent at depicting objects that, whether realistic or abstract, seem three-dimensional. And the coupling of that smoothness with his unique compositions makes his work powerful. Born in Belgium, Thomas Maes shows his work widely and now lives and works on the island of Crete. Copyright Thomas Maes, A New World, Oil on Canvas, 40 x 50 cm, (left), Civilization, Oil on Canvas, 85 x 73 cm (right) One of this year’s highlights in the Modern and Contemporary Art section include artworks by Thomas Maes, the premiere of unique oil paintings, sculptures and design objects, inviting the sophisticated art lovers to discuss about it. Thomas Maes, born 1983 in Belgium, shows an extraordinary collection of paintings with ordinary objects in an unusual context. They attract the viewer's attraction by giving new meanings to familiar things. The use of ordinary objects in unfamiliar spaces is joined to his desire to create poetic imagery as well as his consciousness to think about the Universe. Thomas Maes described the process of painting as the art of putting colors side by side in such a way that their real aspect is effaced, so that familiar objects - clouds, amphora's, houses, trees or cubic forms - become united in a single poetically disciplined image. The poetry of these images dispense with any symbolic significance, old or new. Each of these recurring themes can be interpreted differently and has significant meanings. His paintings titled “Dark Matter”, “A New World” or “Civilization” represent visible images which evoke a kind of mystery. Thomas Maes` constant play with reality and illusion can be attributed to his interest in history, science and culture. Since seven years, the Belgium artist is living and working at the Greece island of Crete, surrounded by the ancient Minoan civilization and archetypical, archaeological find spots. In his artworks Maes is back and forth playing, zapping on and off with reality and illusion, reflecting his constant shifting back and forth perception during his mental time journey. Since many years Thomas Maes formed his own signature in a very clean, concise and exacting style.
