senglea Caeli is designed to compliment the materials and mass of the lower spur bastions engulfing it, as well as the harbour and maritime theme . The main function of the structure is to accomodate guests for drinks and cocktails while offering a panoramic view of the harbour and Birgu. It ‘s geometric style is complemented by the use of air and light to create a space based on relaxation and socialization. Concept Development started off from experimenting with the lines and angles found within the bastions in the site, exploring materials which weathered naturally and complemented the weathered Globigerina stone and maintained a low visual weight. For this reason a combination of travertine, corten steel and glass are used as the main building finishes.

General assembly of the superstructure of the kiosk involves the use of structural bolting between pre-cast elements. The bolting is achieved through the installation of a steel endplate embedded within the vertical elements, with a 25mm tie rod exposed out of the elements with thread to be bolted into the horizontal elements. The Stairs cantilever out of the reinforced wall, and are also supported by a beam at the other end of the cantilever. The floor finishing involves the use of adhesive layers below the actual interlocking timber elemens

Lift Detail 1

The interior of the Kiosk makes use of the same materials as the exterior - corten steel, exposed concrete and tiber cladding. The interior is based around the views of the harbour and Birgu, exposing the customers to as wide a view as possible from any angle. The interior is designed to open up through the use of sliding glass doors to create a practically open air space for Malta’s summer days. The interior layout manages to seat approximately 25 people seated.

The lift allows wheelchair acess as well as ease of acess for elder people. The system uses a series of pulleys and cables to vertically displace the cubicle. A motor is placed in the small compartment behind the lift which generates the necessary torque. The elevator maintains the correct direction of displacement by means of rails (Labelled Detail 8) which restrict direction of motion. The elevator door folds to one side due to the restricted space.
