What is the European Students’ Union?
ESU Board Meeting 77, Malta
The European Students’ Union (ESU) is the umbrella organisation of 45 national unions of students’ from 39 European countries. ESU promotes and represents the educational, social, economic and cultural interests of almost 20 million students to all key European decision-making bodies: the European Union, Council of Europe, UNESCO and the Bologna Follow Up Group. Throughout the years, ESU has witnessed many internal and external changes while continuously developing itself to what it is right now: a professional advocacy and capacity building organisation that is influential and recognised as an important stakeholder at the European and international level.

Quality, Equity and Responsibility Besides representing the views, needs and perspectives of European students, ESU aims to ensure and strengthen students’ participation and to increase the student input into higher education policy and decision making at the local, national and European level. ESU promotes a higher education system based on the values of quality, equity and accessibility for all. Another important aim for ESU is to be renowned and respected as a source of expertise on higher education policy at all institutional levels and to build links and foster an exchange of information, ideas and experiences among students and student platforms at a regional and global level.

Our Work.
ESU regularly produces publications, such as the Student Centred Learning Toolkit (published in 2010) and provides training to increase the knowledge of the national students’ unions and provide them with valuable tools for their work. All written materials are provided free of charge, while attendance at training is heavily subsidised through projects that are mainly funded by the European Commission.

Kunsill Studenti Universitarji Our Work - Our Vision
Kunsill Studenti Universitarji is the oldest national student union in Europe and currently represents approximately thirteen thousand students at the University of Malta and Junior College. KSU was founded by Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca in 1901, as the Comitato Permanente Universitario. Throughout the year, the students’ union takes on a very proactive approach towards current affairs, national and international issues.

Aim The organisation’s aim remains unaltered through the years: to foster and enhance the important contribution that every student can lend to our University and Maltese society. KSU gives students the opportunity not only to attend, but also to form an integral part of their University. KSU’s Executive Committee is pushing forth the renewed emphasis that University is not simply an academic domain where one specialises within a particular field or profession, but a forum for exchange of experiences between students as well as one of the ultimate steps which complete the student formation process. Although in itself KSU is a dynamic organisation and therefore is open for change and debate, like other organisations, it finds its roots in a set of fundamental objectives on which it was founded.
1. To represent students in a variety of issues concerning them, whether on a national or international level: 2. To maintain an official link between students and the relevant authorities: 3. To achieve the democratization of education in Malta; 4. To coordinate activities with other organisations and; 5. To cultivate an interest in students in the fields of education, sociopolitical, international and cultural issues.

ESU’s highest governing body, the Board, meets twice a year, and is hosted at one of its member organizations’ state. Decisions regarding ESU’s direction are taken during these yearly Board Meetings. The next Board Meeting, BM77 will take place in Malta and is hosted by KSU, the University Students’ Council. The Board Meeting is the highest decision-making body, where every member organization has the right to vote on standing orders, strategic political priorities, plan of work, policy papers, statements and resolutions. BM77 will focus on Social Dimension, Human Rights and Solidarity. KSU’s vision is to promote social inclusion and integration of different communities and cultures within the university, to bring a sense of unity and community between students, and the ESU BM77 is a good opportunity for KSU to continue to further its reach and vision across its borders to a European level.

Marketing Strategy
Branding and Sharing Platforms
A brand has been developed for the event, featuring a logo which heavily links to KSU’s branding in order for the event to look familiar with local followers. The imagery has strong influence from local features including the door icon which hints at hospitality issues and the theme of human rights. The event will be marketed through multiple platforms, including social media and a dedicated website. A facebook and instagram page have been set up on which announcement, updates and event photographs will be shared. These pages will be heavily supported by the KSU Facebook page which has over 22,000 followers. Moreover, the University of Malta as well as a number of student organizations are willing to support the event and push its incentives.
