SECONDARY RESEARCH Initially we both decided to go away separately a research the brief, I decided to focus on the packaging aspect of the brief whereas Greta focused on the bottle design, however we were both thinking conceptually about the whole brief. I focused on perfume and cosmetic packaging, in a style that is modern and simplistic in line with the brief aim of ‘modernising the brand’ of L’artisan parfumeur.
PRIMARY RESEARCH Me and Greta decided to go into Leeds and explore existing perfume design in store as we couldn’t fit in a trip to London to the only L’artisan Parfumeur store in the country. We visited a store similar in ethos to L’artisan Parfeumeur, Jo Malone. In Jo Malone they gave us sample of fragrances similar to those described in the brief, we felt this was crucial in the naming process of the scents as we needed to smell them in order to name them effectively. We also visited Harvey Nichols to get a wider view of the current perfume market. We also collected a range of printed ephemera whilst in store.

CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT After the inital research process, as well as begining to sketch out some inital ideas for both packaging and bottle designs it became apparent that a concept was needed before visual ideas could truely develop. I began to think of concepts which could encompass the fragrances. Each of the scents in it’s description is a contradiction and this idea led to the art of contradiction as the brand is very artistic, experimental bold. This was an idea that I put forward to Greta and the concept we ended up using to solidify our final idea.

INITAL IDEAS
DEVELOPMENT
Me and Greta decided that I would be best if we first went away and developed a range of ideas for the brief regarding the designing of the bottle and the packaging. From the research I created a series of ides for the bottle based on the concept I had developed of ‘The art of contradicition’. I focused on how the bottle could be used to convey a contradiction as me and Greta had previoulsy discussed that whatever concept we choose the concept must be present throughout all asspects of the products and design that we make.
Once me and Greta had gone away seperately and thought about our ideas we came together to discuss what ideas we had come up with and what ideas we want to take forward. Greta liked the concept of ‘The art of contradiction’ so we decided to run with that, once deciding on that we worked through translating this into potential bottle and packaging design ideas this where the collaborative practice came in and we blended our ideas together to create one solid concept.

BOTTLE DEVELOPMENT Me and Greta once again decided go away seperately and work in seperate parts of the brief, Greta was going to work on the inner patterns for the packaging while I began to look at the bottle design and how the typography could be applied to the final bottle design we had chosen. I explored working with a range of different fonts untilI I found an appropriate font.
PACKAGING DESIGN I was also responsible for designing the exterior packaging, as I had previously been working type for the bottle design I translated these principles over to how I designed the packaging. We want to keep the box itself simple as the interaction with the box was going to be complex. I kept to a black and white colour pallete as inside of the packaging the colour would be reveal to create a stark contrast. I produced a range of possible layouts and designs and me and Greta together, decided on what elements worked best and created the final layout.

WORKING DRAWINGS As I had created the bottles digital and I had a previous background in product design I created the technical drawings so that Greta could get the wood lid for the bottles cut and engaged to the exact specifications. I created these plans to make it explicitly clear to the wood work department exactly what we needed.

PRODUCTION OF PACKAGING We again split into two to get work done on the brief, while Greta was getting the wooden lid for the bottles made I used this time to get the packaging printed in the Digital Dungeon and then built up the packaging and pain stackingly hand perforated the fronts of each of the packages. This is prehaps the biggest benefit of working collaboratively is that large elements of the production time can be halved as two people are working to get the work done at the same time.
PHOTOSHOOT & BOARDS Both me and Greta wanted to be part of the photoshoot although it was primarly orchestrated by Greta. As we had both been working on seperate parts of the brief and then bringing the work together the photoshoot was an opportunity for us to again work collaborativley directly and get the results we both as we both had different ideas of what we could do with the photos. At the very end of the project we both spent a long night on the night of the hand in editing all of the photo and putting the boards together we felt we needed to do this together as it was both our work, however this process proved extremely benefical as the board were very sucessful in ther communication of our concept.
