1:1 Stamps rendered at actual size In isolation
If all those who owned a car but chose to travel by bus instead could result in 70 less cars on the road for each bus journey, therefore the bus can dramatically reduce the world’s carbon footprint
1:1 Stamps rendered at actual size As a set
The stamps work in both isolation and as a series. When they are placed together they form a circular shape to represent the world in which the stamps aim to encourage people to protect through their consideration of transport.

A quarter of all car journey’s made in the UK are less than two miles, if bikes replaced these journey’s one’s carbon footprint could be reduced enormously and at a personal saving of £600 a per year on fuel.

Using public transport such as trains can reduce journey related emissions by up to half, our rail network provides a feasible alternative to car for most journey’s.
Walking just one mile a day can lead to a saving of up to £160 per year in fuel. Walking is free, healthy and produces no products harmful to the environment.

1:1 First day cover
To advertise and promote this set of limited edition stamps the first day cover poses the question, ‘consider the alternatives’ which aims to get the audience to question there everyday routine and perhaps explore something they haven’t previously.
The solution in brief
My ideation process started by exploring a range of environmental challenges we currently face however my ideas quickly gravitated towards alternative methods of transports as transport Systems account for 20% of the world’s energy use, it’s also something people can change in there life immediately or begin to think about changing. I focused my research on the types of transport currently available to the public and future technology that could benefit our travel. However I felt it was necessary to communicate methods of transport that people could react to immediately and begin to make changes in

their life imminently. I chose four key transport methods to run across four stamp designs all of which are alternatives to using the car a means for transport. Walking, Cycling, the train and the bus were the four types of transport I chose to communicate, although all do not offer pollution free transport they are have all proven to reduces one’s individual carbon footprint and provide a healthier world for future generations. The stamps can offer great benefit to the recipient - the first day cover states ‘leave the right trail on the world’ this ask the audience to question what trail are they currently leaving? emissions, the stamps directly opposite this communicate the solution through alternatives methods of transport people can use to reduce their carbon footprint and leave a greener trail behind, helping the world to move forward towards a carbon free future.

Research Existing stamps
These stamps are primarily focused on the visualisation of the theme of renewable energy, similar to how I intend to visualise alternative forms of transport. Using illustration to communicate statistics could be a concept I could incorporate into my designs
The way in which these stamps work as both a set and individually is similar to how I want my stamps to function. The background always the stamps to work together and the individual illustrations form each stamps identity.
The use of minimal colour, and the way that the background becomes part of the design is extremely effective and bring the series together, colour scheme will be important within my own stamps to ensure they work as a series.
Development
Initially I explored a range of ideas that used for stamps that through the design connected to create a series. These stamps focus on the theme of alternative transport. However due to the scale of the stamps, the concept is not very effective at this scale.
I also considered other concepts such as reusing and recycling within my stamp designs, again they work together however as individual stamps the message being communicated is not as strong as the set as a series.
Through further design investigating I began to consider further the concept of alternative transport. I have focused on the earth pulling the stamps together and each stamps having its own form of transport, therefore the stamps work both together and on their own.
