The year 1920 was the star t of the decade shor tly af ter Wor ld War I and a time of great prosper it y for the countr y. Women are called dames, dolls, or the cat ’s meow. At the beginning of the decade, women still wore long sk ir ts but the “R oar ing 20’s” brought a new look of shor t sk ir ts and smar tly coiffed shor ter hair. I t was within this environment that Zeta Phi B eta S oror it y was founded. Zeta Phi B eta S oror it y was founded on the simple belief that soror it y elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, pover t y, and health concer ns of the day. Founded Januar y 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard Universit y in Washington, D.C.; Ar izona Cleaver, M yr tle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie, and Pear l Neal. These five women, also k nown as our Five Pear ls, dared to depar t from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of S cholarship, S er vice, Sister hood, and Finer Womanhood. I t was the ideal of the Founders that the S oror it y would reach college women in all par ts
3
of the countr y who were soror it y minded and desired to follow the pr inciples of the organization. Founder Viola Tyler was of ten quoted to say, “[I n the ideal colle giate situation] there is a Zeta in a gir l regardless of race, creed, or color, who has high standards and pr inciples, a good scholar ly average, and an interest in all things that she under takes to accomplish.” Zeta’s inter national, national and local, programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, communit y outreach ser vices and suppor t of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliar y groups have given untotaled hours of voluntar y ser vice to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, suppor t organized char ities, and promote legislation for social and civic change through Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping O ther People Excel). O ver the years since the soror it y ’s inception, Zeta Phi B eta has char tered hundreds of chapters and intiated thousands of women around the wor ld. Zeta has continued to thr ive and flour ish while adapting to the ever- changing needs of the wor ld. D espite the change in time, Zeta has continued to hold true to its ideals and pur pose.
