On behalf of the Sensational Sorors of the Zeta Omega Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., it is my honor and pleasure to extend warm greetings to all in attendance as we celebrate our 2015 Finer Womanhood Celebration and Scholarship Luncheon. As women committed to the ideal of Service, it gives us immense pleasure to recognize outstanding individuals and organizations who share our commitment and have selflessly served others in our community. We congratulate our 2015 Woman of the Year and our 2015 Organization of the Year for their service to enhance the lives of many in Saginaw. For several years we have enjoyed the privilege of providing support to the best and brightest future leaders in our area as they pursue their academic and career goals. Today we enthusiastically congratulate the 2015 recipients of the Freddye Curl Murphy Scholarship. We are proud of all that you have accomplished and all that you will accomplish in the future! It is a special privilege for the women of Zeta Omega Zeta to recognize our own members who have excelled in embracing and implementing the ideals of Service, Scholarship, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. National History
The year 1920 was the start of the decade shortly after World War I and a time of great prosperity for the country. Women were called dames, dolls, or the cat’s meow. At the beginning of the decade, women still wore long skirts but the “Roaring 20’s” brought a new look of short skirts and smartly coiffed shorter hair. It was within this environment that Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. It was the ideal of the Founders that the Sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the principles of
the organization. Founder Viola Tyler was often quoted to say, “[In the ideal collegiate situation] there is a Zeta in a girl regardless of race, creed, or color, who has high standards and principles, a good scholary average, and an interest in all things that she undertakes to accomplish.” Zeta’s international, national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change through Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel). Over the years since the sorority’s inception, Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters and initiated thousands of women around the world. Zeta has continued to thrive and flourish while adapting to the ever changing needs of the world. Despite the change in time, Zeta has continued to hold true to its ideals and purpose.

Out of the love of Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter (Flint, Michigan), the Saginaw Chapter (Zeta Omega Zeta) was envisioned, created, and nurtured.
In 1967, fourteen members who resided in the Saginaw area received congratulations and best wishes from their sister chapter, Zeta Beta Zeta and the Regional Director, Soror Ione Gipson, to pursue their dream and realize their goal. Amidst much love, fanfare and prayers, members willingly accepted the task of being charter members of Saginaw’s newest fraternal organization, Zeta Omega Zeta Chapter. Charter members included Charlena Schenck Bryant, Annye P. Roberts, Elizabeth N. Baker, Ann Giryer, Rosa Winchester, Mary Jackson, Catherine B. Kimbrough, Loubertha Little, Shirley Nuckolls, Hazel Wilson, Vezelia Phillips, Rose Johnson Branch, L. Yvonne Veal, and Freddye Curl Murphy.

Membership in Zeta Omega Zeta’s vast and diverse. Our members come from all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds residing in Saginaw, Bay City, Birch Run, Midland, Mt. Pleasant, Remus, Swartz Creek, and Flint. Our members are retired educators, political advocates, nurses, doctors, teachers, auditors, managers, directors, and graduate students. Zeta Omega Zeta has joined the ranks of other chapters in our great sisterhood by presenting outstanding service to the community as well as providing other fun and educational events. We continue our commitment to all Saginaw area residents, women, men, seniors, youth, and families.
Zeta Omega Zeta follows the ideals of the sorority. Annually, the chapter sponsors the Finer Womanhood Program, which is designed to honor women and families who have contributed exemplary service to the community. The chapter actively supports and sponsors the 11

Miss Jasmin Alexander MISS BLACK USA | WOMEN’S ACTIVIST | USAF OFFICER | MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER
Jasmin is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Broadcasting and Mass Communications, as well as a Masters graduate of Liberty University with a focus in Human Services and Executive Leadership. Born abroad in Ramstein, GE, and having the privilege of living the life of a military brat, Jasmin has learned the virtues of culture, difference, and change. Having gone to 4 different elementary schools, 2 different middle schools, flexibility is nothing uncommon to her. The daughter of Felix and Violet Alexander and the younger sister of Latavia Alexander, Jasmin values her family as her firm foundation. Her parents taught her that she “can do all things through Christ which strengthens her (Philippians 4:13) and with due diligence and effort, all things are possible. With that in mind, she took every opportunity as a bridge to catapult her to her destiny. Dreams of one day owning her own
business in the Cosmetology and Self Help field took route as a young Sophomore in college. Wanting to dedicate her life legacy to inspiring young women to dare to dream and look beyond their current situation continues to stand at the forefront. However, using the military upbringing as a starting point, Jasmin was commissioned as a United States Officer in May of 2010. Her current career field of Intelligence, has allowed her to be exposed to new ideas, new personalities, and most of all mature into the vibrant young lady she is today. Her travels have taken her across the world to such places as Turkey, Germany, and even Afghanistan where she served in Operation Enduring Freedom. Despite her current military involvement, Jasmin doesn’t let her “day job” become her complete reality. She is a proud and active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and still takes time to inspire and empower girls and women thru the Heart Truth campaign, to awareness of heart disease, the #1 killer of women. Additionally, she can be found coaching for a Varsity Cheerleading team as well as Pom Pom squad. Her passion is in mentoring and passing along the education and self-worth which was instilled in her. One of her mottos is, “Blessed to be a blessing.” 19

MRS. STEPHANIE GRANBERRY Stephanie joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Zeta Omega Zeta Chapter in April of 2007. She served as the 2nd Anti-Basileus from June 2008 through June 2012. Stephanie has been an Archonette Advisor since June 2012 and is currently the co-chairperson of the Archonettes. She has attended State Meetings, a Regional Conference in 2014, Health fairs and several other seminars and workshops. Stephanie received her ZOL Certification in July 2013 at the Zeta Organizational Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. She currently serves at the Chapter’s Grammateus since of June 2014. Stephanie completed the Saginaw Valley African American Leadership Training Institute and is a graduate of the Class of 2014. Stephanie has worked for the County
of Saginaw for over 19 years. She has held several positions during this time, including working as a Court Recorder for the Honorable M. Randall Jurrens and the Honorable Kyle Higgs Tarrant. She currently is a supervisor in the 70th District Court. Stephanie graduated from Central Michigan University in August of 2001 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. She also has a Master of Science Degree in Human Resource as of May 2010. Stephanie plans further her education to become a College Professor. Stephanie was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan where she resides with her husband, Gregory and their 23 year old son. Stephanie is a devout Christian and is a member of New Covenant Christian Center Church in Saginaw where she serves as the Count Team Leader in the Finance Department and in the Music Ministry.

Woman of the Year MRS. THELMA RUFFIN
Thelma Ruffin came to Saginaw, Michigan at an early age. She attended Potter Elementary School, Central Junior High, and graduated from Saginaw High School. She received her Bachelors degree from Wayne State University, where she taught school before coming back to Saginaw with her family. She started teaching at Trinity Lutheran School, then moved to the Saginaw School District at the Student Placement Center. From there she took a position at Jessie Loomis Elementary, where she remained for twenty two years until retirement. At Loomis, Thelma taught most grades at the elementary grade level and also served as SEA building rep. Mrs. Ruffin is a member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church and is active on the Caring Hands Ministry and the Women of Praise and Prayer Ministry. They have made donations to Good Neighbors Mission and volunteer with the Hunger Solution to feed less fortunate citizens in Saginaw. She is an active member of The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., a professional sorority of educators, where she has served
as president at the local level and as membership chairperson statewide and has been awarded soror of the year honors. Since the late 70’s, Thelma has served as one of the advisors for the sorority’s youth group, the Gamma Kappa Xinos. Helping young ladies is one of her most rewarding activities. These young ladies volunteer and do community service and educational projects, as well as cultural activities under the direction of the advisors. Thelma also loves the arts. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Pit and Balcony Theatre. There, she worked on sets and productions at the theatre. Currently she is a commissioner on the Board of Directors at the Andersen Saginaw Arts and Enrichment Center. An additional commitment is to the life membership with the NAACP. Mrs. Ruffin is a member of the Executive Committee and as a member, she works on the Health committee, which deals with the health concerns of Saginaw’s community. She is also a member of the School-Based Health Delivery committee (CAC) Community Advisory Council. This council deals with school based clinics at Arthur Hill and Saginaw High and focuses on health related problems of students. (cont. pg. 25) 23

This network affords the Saginaw Community Action Agency access to a supportive network of community action problem solvers.
Saginaw Community Action Committee has a number of well established programs in the community which include its Gardening Program, Information and Referrals, Minority Senior Outreach and Advocacy, Neighborhood Environmental Code Enforcement, Emergency Services/Housing, Food and Nutrition Services, Minor Home Repairs and Weatherization Programs to name a few.

Auxiliary Groups MISSION
The Mission of the Youth Clubs of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is to provide a carefully designed program of activities that will enhance youth club members through mind, body, and spirit as they work within their various communitities to help others.
Pearlette Club
The Pearlettes are young ladies (ages 4-8) who are willing to strive for the high ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. As a Pearlette, you can expect your child to participate in some of our youth-oriented Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) programs, educational activities and community service initiatives. Zetas have proven ways to introduce children to service by making holiday cards, packaging food boxes at food pantries, making blankets, collecting canned goods during the holiday seasons, and working with a host organizations and agencies in order to serve the community and illiustrate the fact that service knows no age limit.
Amicette Club
The Amicettes are girls (ages 9-13) who are able to demonstrate a potential for leadership and are willing to work as a part of a group. These young ladies strive towards the high ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. through academic and personal development, as well as community service. Amicettes will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, broaden their horizons, and strengthen their social and cultural awareness through programs.
Archonette Club
The Archonette Club is designed to help young ladies (ages 14-18) grow culturally, socially, and educationally. Young ladies in the Archonette Club will have the opportunity to participate in programs and activities that help them learn to make responsible decisions, create happiness for others, develop new interests, and develop self confidence. This program was created to help youth mature their unique personalities, build their leadership skills, and develop relationships with other young ladies. The Archonettes demonstrate an interest in the high ideals of scholarship, sisterly love, and service.
Zeta Amicae
The Amicae are women, who for various reasons, have not joined a Greek-letter organization. These woman learn and grow in the spirit of sisterly love and friendship. Zeta Amicae participate in community service within their respective communities and are located and sponsored in areas where there are active chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
