Making changes for the future

T.O. & Lori Learn from Past Events to Offer Best Experience for Sudents

O

ne thing everyone can take away from having annual event is the comfort of knowing a new, more efficient, plan of action will almost always be thought of, for the future, after the event has come to an end. This was the case for recreation professors Tim Otteman and Lori Irwin, the fearless leaders of the Finch Fanatics student team, who have turned the Gus Macker planning process into an actual classroom curriculum. One year ago the Gus Macker at CMU changed from a national planning

staff’s charging, to a near completely student coordinated event. With the event being changed to a student led production, the course would be arranged so as to substitute this planning experience for an Event Management requirement, RPL 318 Field Course in Commercial Recreation. “The hardest part of running an event of this size and scope AND teaching students at the same time is the reality of having to start from scratch each year,” said Otteman. Having this is in mind the curricula

During the first couple of weeks students are introduced to the Gus Macker “culture,” some staff, past Macker events workers, the idea of double elimination, marketing of the event in the Mount Pleasant area and volunteer management, along with basic class rules and

starting of brainstorming for year specific events. The arrangement of the course hasn’t changed a tremendous amount, but after having last year’s Macker and evaluating areas that could be improved Otteman said measures have been taken to insure a better overall experience. “We just changed a few things for the 2011 event based on what we learned last year. All of the festivaltype activities have been moved inside to Finch Fieldhouse to create a more lively atmosphere, the Gus Busters and court volunteers are now being recruited by the class themselves and hospitality rooms have been created and will be manned by the special events team to better service all volunteers,” said Otteman.

With those changes, and a fresh set of students, the planning of Macker was carried out and after its commencement will surely add some new areas to be evaluated for changing in the coming years.

ne of the newest additions to Central’s campus is the new CMU Events Center. A new renovation to the old “Rose Arena,” the events center is an abode to multiple spectacular features offering CMU a wide new variety of opportunities for events and activities.

The exterior of the Events Center exposes the extraordinary mural along the north hall of the arena.

The events center, a building very state of the art and costly to build, has been chosen as the philanthropy of the 2011 Mount Pleasant Gus Macker event because of the great opportunities it will bring to the community as a whole, not just to the on campus community.

The new events facility is home to a 5, 300 seat Already proving arena, complete to be a venue of with comfortable new beginnings, upholstered seats after hosting a and contoured great opening for bleachers. 25 years ago there weren’t blogs, unlike the millions that scatter the internet today. We asked our bloggers what they thought they would be doing in years past to promote the event and reach participants without blogging or social media. Here’s what they had to say.

“I can tell you we would be making a lot more phone calls. We’d probably be keeping in contact with the newspapers and radio stations. It’s easy now to get connected with social media and I can definitely say we would have been using word-ofmouth much more 25 years ago.” -Stephanie McClung “25 years ago to achieve the same goal of gettings people interested & in touch with the class I would do personal interviews and live appearances and update people on the event.” -Brittney Theodore

t is great to see and appreciate that Macker basketball continues its storied tradition here at CMU and around the country. Over the years that I have been involved with the Gus Macker 3X3 tournaments, one thing is for certain. The volunteers are the lifeblood and energy of this event. The team names have changed, the logos have changed, the backboards are still looking pretty sweet (but different), even the colored basketballs have changed colors more than once…… heck, even Scott “Gus” McNeal has changed over the years. But the volunteers haven’t, they are the spark in the plug, the fizz in fizzy, and the hot in tamale when it comes to making the tourney run smoothly. You are appreciated for putting in countless hours of prep, all the behind the scenes junk that has to be prepared, and the attention to details that will be noticed and appreciated that gives the Macker such a distinctive flavor……and it was YOU VOLS that make the difference. My hat’s off to TO’s & Lori’s troops, the RPL Finch Fanatics…….volunteers all. Soooooo, on behalf of the Mt. Pleasant Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, CMU, RPL, all the teams entered, Don Stabenow and myself (symbolic tournament directors resurrected

from the past)…..WE’D LIKE TO THANK YOU for your time, effort, enthusiasm, dedication to the dream, do-or-die learning experience and putting up with cold pizza. We truly appreciate all that you have done to make this the best tournament possible. Learn a lot from this experience….the good, bad and ugly, (as there will be plenty of all three) as it will help you in planning your future events! As Scott “Gus” McNeal would lovingly say, “See you on the courts” and “May all your Macker Dreams come true”! Dean Wallin, One of CMU’s Macker Old School Tournament Directors - 1986

Treat ‘em good & they’ll come back again

Volunteer Management Tips from Suze Tengen for Gus Macker Students

“P

ack your fanny pack,” was the final token of advice from Suzi Tengen, T.O.’s mother, after speaking on volunteer management on April 7, 2011 to the Gus Macker class. Suzi Tengen has been coordinating volunteers for over 15 years, for the Amy Otteman Classic golf tournament held to raise money for donating in memory of her late daughter. Over the years the classic was able to raise over $185,000. Throughout all of the years of the event, Tengen said it never would have been pulled off without the time and effort of the volunteers. After distributing treats to the students she gave a bulleted list of the highlights of what it means to be a great volunteer manager. “Always provide the volunteers with food,” was the first. Tengen said that good volunteers are fed volunteers. The second was to make sure the volunteers have background knowledge on the event they’re helping out at. Most of the time volunteers don’t have a good experience because they don’t understand the event or their position and feel out of place. Third, pick your volunteers wisely. Volunteers need to have a positive attitude, be willing to help out in various areas and committed. The next tip, in relation to the last, was be prepared for no shows. This won’t be as hard if you pick volunteers that are committed, as suggested in tip three, but if you do end up with no shows, be prepared to move volunteers around or take on the task yourself.

Fifth, make them identifiable. Volunteers are people too and if they are not easily identifiable they can blend in with the guests at your event. Next, make sure the volunteer has a kit with everything imaginable inside of it. Tengen suggested everything they need to complete their task plus things such as ponchos, bug spray, sunscreen, Band-Aids and tissue. Always include them in the event and make sure they are well taken care of, was tip #7. Volunteers can only care as much as they are cared for, especially if they are doing the volunteering for another mandatory requirement. Tengen suggested making rounds and doublechecking that volunteers are okay. She also mentioned that checking in doesn’t mean micro managing. Tip eight, make sure volunteers are never bored. There are always things that need to be done. While making your rounds see if there are areas that you can relieve volunteers from their jobs and move them to other tasks. After all of their hard work a written than you after the event is always a must, said Tengen as tip nine. For the last tip Tengen said, make sure to treat your volunteers with respect because they are donating their time. It’s not hard to please a good volunteer, and with these tips from Suzi Tengen you won’t make a one-time volunteer but a volunteer that if you treat ‘em good, they’ll come back again.

The Infamous Gus Macker Tunnel Learn How to Create Your Own Macker Tunnel

G

us Macker is a culture, and in all cultures if you don’t stay up with the trends you’ll be left out and what kind of fun is that. Here’s a secret, you don’t have to be left behind. A major part of the Macker culture is the Macker tunnel, it happens everywhere. It can happen on Dream court, it can happen in the hall, it can really happen anywhere. What is the Macker Tunnel you ask? Well it’s a series of five steps that are super simple to learn, so read these quick directions so you won’t be left out of the Macker Madness. ONE: form two rows of people. The lines should be even but an extra person on one side, or the other, won’t hurt. TWO: everyone must clap at a slow, but STEADY, beat. Clap, clap, clap, clap…got it? Now remember the key is steady, don’t do the slow clap to a thunderous applause,

Everyone wins when they come to O-ink.

just keep it quiet, because during this time whoever will be going through the tunnel is being announced. THREE: the person that will be going through your tunnel will go through now and everyone in the rows will clap their hand THEN resume clapping. Clapping at the what? Yes! A slow and steady beat. FOUR: everyone will come into a huddle. This is where it gets barbaric, so watch your toes. Everyone will start to jump up and down and of course the infamous huddle sound roars, “OOOOHHH!” FIVE: a select person will scream, yes SCREAM, “One, Two, Three,” and everyone will follow it by saying “GO MACKER!” Great! So now that you have all the necessary elements, go out and join a tunnel, and if there isn’t a tunnel around just grab some others and make your own.

Kevin Garrett

The Voice to Woo the Masses With a voice like John Mayer, who would resist the wandering of their ears to the voice of Kevin Garrett. The young up-andcoming artist has been singing and song writing for several years. The cousin of Jessica LePage, a Special Events Captain, he was a primary suggestion for Main Stage during planning, this year. For all of his new fans, here’s a short interview for you all to get to him a little better. G: What would you consider to be your genre of music? KG: I’m afraid of being tagged to a specific style. My influences are definitely of the blues and folk genres, but I guess I should be considered a pop artist. ... I definitely don’t sound like Gaga or Bieber, but I’d like to get to the point where I can say that enough people are hip to my style to place myself in the “pop” category...

G: Everyone says you have a John Mayer sound, what do you think? KG: He’s an incredible

musician, and I admire anything he creates. It’s a thrill to be in the same conversation, but I’d like to reach a place where I am known as myself rather than the next John Mayer... I’m really into a lot of older musicians, like Sam Cooke and Nat Cole, along with some other great current artists like Jamie Cullum and Ray LaMontagne … I love any and all kind words, but the day someone says that they can hear Bon Iver or Ray in my music will be the day everything gets even that much cooler. G: Your CD just dropped in January of this year, what was your inspiration? and are you working on anything new for the future? KG: Reminds Me Of You is an EP that represents a chapter in my life that has since had its pages turned ... I think my newer music is definitely a better display of me as a songwriter … now I’m writing lyrics that I probably couldn’t have dreamt of back then … I’m looking forward to what’s next.

Brainstorm for special events Special events for Macker don’t just come about by happenstance. They are executed through lots of brainstorming and decision making. Let’s here some of the suggestions that didn’t make the cut this year.

Julie Dudderar, “One thing we wanted to do was have the local roller derby do a performance at the Opening Ceremony. The idea didn’t work Jessica LePage, because the short amount “We thought about of time we have for the having people play Wii actual ceremony. However, we were games all day long. location.”

Court Captains prep for Macker Most student positions, for Macker, do mostly preevent work. Court captains, though, learn many rules but don’t put their skills to action until the day of. To get a better perspective of how the Court Captains felt about their jobs, they were asked “What was the hardest part he preparing for the event?” Nicole Benedict, “The hardest part about preparing for the event was my lack of experience in basketball having to learn all the rules and regulations. It is also difficult to picture how event is going to take place until the day it happens, which is both intimidating and exciting.”

Trevor Parnell, “Not knowing precisely what to expect because I have never attended Macker before. I can’t wait to see all of our hard work in action!”

Heather Curtis, “It’s hard not knowing what to expect with the event. We are confident on our end, but there are many factors also playing a part. I’m excited to see the tournament unfold.”

Justin Papes, “The hardest Valentina Noto, “The part about planning this hardest part about event is getting college preparing for the 2011 students to register. The Gus Macker event was tournament is the weekend finding volunteers to score before exams and a lot of keep and be a GusBuster college for the entire weekend. students It was hard to find two choose people that would really not to be committed and willing participate to dedicate their time. :)” because of this.”

No dunking allowed – warm ups or games. Any participant registered to play in the Gus Macker tournament observed dunking on any basket at any time may be dismissed from the tournament. Entry fee will not be refunded. (Exception – Slam Dunk Contest). 7. Note: Dunking is allowed on the Top Men’s and Top Women’s divisions during games only. NOT during warm-ups. TIME-OUTS AND SUBSTITUTIONS 1. Each team is allowed one (1) one minute time-out per game. Exception 40 and over division is allowed two (2) one minute time-outs per game. 2. If play is stopped by a teammate or GusBuster to attend to an obvious injury, then the injured player must sit out at least until the next dead ball. 3. Player substitution is permitted during any dead ball situation. LIVE BALL/DEAD BALL/ POSSESSION 1. A coin flip before the start of the game will determine who gets the ball out-of-bounds first.

2. The ball will change possession after each scored basket (i.e. no possession/no make it take it). 3. Jump balls will be called by the GusBuster and will go to the defense. (Not Alternating possession) 4. The top, bottom and sides of the backboard are in play; however, the back of the backboard and the support structure of the basket are not in play. 5. The ball must be checked by an opposing player before it is put into play. The player must pass the ball in while standing out-of-bounds at the top of the court to begin play. 6. All fouls and violations will be played out-of-bounds at the top of the court. 7. A ball out-of-bounds will be taken at the top of the court. 8. The ball must be “taken back” to the marked line on each court on every changed possession. “Taking back” means both feet and the ball behind the take back line. Violation occurs only if a basket is made by the team failing to properly “take it back”, and will result in loss of point scored and possession of the ball will go to the other team. If the ball is not “taken back” and then advanced, any other violation, common foul, offensive foul, intentional, flagrant

or technical foul called by the official will be honored. Exception: If a player is fouled in the act of shooting and makes the basket prior to properly “taking it back” the foul will be honored; however, no points will be awarded. 9. NEW! 10-Second Rule. When taking the ball out-of bounds, a player shall have ten (10) seconds to put the ball into play. A player shall also have ten (10) seconds to initiate any free throw attempt. In either case, the GusBuster or Official is responsible for determining when a violation occurs, which will result in a loss of possession of the ball. 10. Any infraction of these regulations will result in loss of possession of the ball. MISCELLANEOUS 1. All women’s divisions and 10 and under age divisions will use the intermediate size basketball. 2. No alcoholic beverage will be allowed for player consumption on-site. 3. HIV/AIDS – The GusBuster, SuperBuster, HeadBuster, Gus Macker Officials, or Medical Personnel shall order any player who is bleeding or has blood on his/her skin, shirts, shorts or uniform to leave the game for appropriate

Re-entry into the game will be at the discretion of the GusBuster. Return to the game must take place on a deadball situation. 4. The Team Captain is always the team spokesperson, not a coach, parent, spectator, or one of the other players. We ask that all coaches and parents play “the role of a spectator only”. 5. NEW! The Official starting time will be recorded by the Official/GusBuster on the score sheet, The Official Time will be under the jurisdiction of the Official/GusBuster. (The Official Time will be stopped only during timeouts – regular and/or injury.) 5. The team leading at the end of the 25-minute time limit will be declared the winner. 6. Gus Macker Weather Policy

Adverse weather conditions & unplayable situations may result in the following (in order of decisionmaking process): 1. Delay of games for a period of time until the clouds break and conditions improve. (May also require moving games from scheduled courts to overflow courts or others not in use, and/or eliminate certain aspects such as Toilet Bowl, etc.). 2. Reduce the number of points required to win a game. 3. Play games on a consecutive basis by game number rather than by the pre-established game times. 4. Change the format of the tournament from double to single elimination. 5. Move the tournament to indoor site within a reasonable distance of the original site if available. 6. Re-schedule the tournament for a later date at the same site. 7. Cancel the tournament. In the unlikely event of cancellation of the tournament due to adverse weather conditions, each team shall receive their four (4) players t-shirts and team registration package (i.e. programs, Gusettes, etc.) Every effort will also be made to present trophies and awards in an equitable manner. Under no circumstances will a team receive a full
