MANAGER’S NOTES
Good afternoon and welcome to the Mundy Playing Fields for today's Hellenic League derby game against Almondsbury. On Tuesday night we travelled all the way to Ardley near Bicester to play our floodlit cup game. Unfortunately it ended in a 6-2 loss. A big thank you to the players that travelled so we could fulfill the fixture and anyone who came to support. As with Tytherington, this will be the fourth time we've played Almondsbury this season however our head-to-head is slightly different with both the subsidiary cup ties ending in Almondsbury wins. Thank you for you continued support. Andy Davies Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 6
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

MATCH REPORT THORNBURY TOWN 2 LANCASTLE (2)
TYTHERINGTON ROCKS 0 Tuesday 12th February 2019 Hellenic League Division One West
with skipper Pete Fowler having one shot blocked on the line and then a header going over the bar. At this stage all the pressure was on the Rocks back line but defending in numbers Town were unable to carve out any clearcut openings. Wormwell and Mark Viner both had goalbound shots blocked but eventually Thorns took the lead they deserved on the hour mark. Craig Lancastle’s pass found Marcus Wormwell who dribbled round the keeper before steering the ball towards the goal, with Lancastle applying the final touch over the line at the far post.
A much improved Tytherington team proved a hard nut to crack at the Mundy Fields on Tuesday evening, but Thorns eventually proved too strong and picked up another win which moves them up to third in the table. Right from the kick off the Rocks players pressed and harried giving Town no time to settle on the ball and as a result the game became a midfield battle with little goalmouth action at either end. Harry Brock’s pace was causing problems down the Rocks left flank and it was he that nearly opened the scoring 15 minutes in, but his shot was blocked on the line.
The goal seemed to boost Town and they never looked likely to lose control of the game, with the defence comfortably dealing with any Rocks threat. They nearly doubled their lead 10 minutes from time when Tom Webb’s run and cross found Craig Lancastle but his shot was blocked by Rocks skipper Nathan Croot. However, Thorns leading scorer did grab his second of the night a couple of minutes later when he weaved his way into the box and slotted the ball past Powell. Thorns could have made the final score more convincing, but Toby Bennett shot straight at Powell when well placed, and then Matt Davis’ shot rolled along the line, but no-one could apply the finishing touch
Tom Haim’s speed and strength up front for the visitors was always a threat but Nathan Sage and Pete Fowler kept him under control so that keeper Kurtis Parkin was rarely troubled. Town should perhaps have taken the lead 20 minutes in when Tom Webb’s threaded pass set Marcus Wormwell clear but with just Rocks keeper Powell to beat the striker steered his shot wide of the post. 15 minutes later Harry Brock set up Wormwell but his shot from 6 yards out was comfortably saved by Powell. Apart from a long-range effort from Jim Brock that was fractionally too high the Rocks defence managed to hold firm for the rest of the half.
Whilst Thorns were perhaps not at their best they were pleased to come away with the three points against a determined Rocks side.
A series of corners early in the second half saw some frantic defending from the visitors 20

ARDLEY UNITED 6 SMITH (3), HARRIS, WOODALL, MOORE
THORNBURY TOWN 2 DAVIS, WORMWELL
Tuesday 26th February 2019 Hellenic League Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup Thornbury Town made a fruitless 160 mile round trip to Oxfordshire on Tuesday evening when they made their first ever visit to Premier Division side Ardley United. Playing down the slope in the first half the hosts made all the early running and Yusuf missed an easy chance after 5 minutes but after this Thorns gradually adapted to the pace of the game and started to create some problems for the home defence with Tom Webb and Harry Brock a constant threat. Craig Lancastle and Matt Davis both had chances but last ditch tackles prevented clear efforts on goal. Ardley took the lead midway through the half after Kurtis Parkin had saved well from Harris but George Smith was on hand to rifle home the rebound. Town responded well and Matt Davis’ weaving run past four defenders was ended when Woodall intercepted his pass to Lancastle. Home keeper Lawrence then punched away a dangerous looking Webb cross and at this stage Thorns were looking to go in at the break just the one goal behind. However just a couple of minutes before the half time whistle, the referee awarded Ardley a hotly disputed penalty that even their players had not appealed for when Connor Harris appeared to run into Nathan Sage as the defender went to head a cross clear. Harris himself made no mistake from the spot. The second half saw Thorns soon cut the deficit when good work from Craig Lancastle set up Matt Davis to net at the far post. However within a couple of minutes another controversial free kick decision for the hosts saw them regain their two goal advantage. The quickly taken kick saw Town a little slow 21
to react and Dylan Woodall netted. With Thorns heads down Ardley took full advantage of the gaps that were appearing and some clinical finishing saw them net three more within 10 minutes with Smith completing his hat trick and Tom Moore netting number six. The last 15 minutes saw Thorns regain their composure and a jinking Harry Brock run into the area was ended when he was brought down and Marcus Wormwell’s firmly struck spot kick gave Lawrence no chance. 5 minutes from time Luke Franklins pass found Wormwell whose goalbound shot from 15 yards out was superbly saved by Lawrence. The keeper then pulled off another good save from Matt Davis before Jim Brock curled a shot narrowly wide of the post. A comprehensive win for the home side, although the final scoreline was not a true reflection of the difference between the two sides.

UHLSPORT HELLENIC LEAGUE HELLENIC MATCH REPORTS 23rd February 2019 Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One Susidiary Cup Easington 1 Almondsbury 0
After an entertaining end to end match for the opening stages, the game did become more scrappy with both sides settling down to show their defensive qualities. The last chance of the half did in fact fall to the visitors on the stroke of half time. The Almondsbury winger Dan Lane cut the ball back to the far post and Rugman tapped in on the back post only to see the flag go up for offside. 0-0 at half time.
Sports edged out Almondsbury in this entertaining encounter which the visitors certainly played their part. Both sides hit the woodwork on a number of occasions but it was an unfortunate own goal in the 78th minute that put Easington through to the Quarter Finals of the Hellenic League Subsidary Cup.
The visitors carried on where they left off at the beginning of the second half and Rugman again managed to get in behind the Sports’ defence but his lob was missed timed and Adam Rimmer collected with ease. Easington found it much harder to test the Almonds keeper Merry in the second half. Sports kept the ball well but a slower pace to the game meant that the experienced back four managed the game well. Apart from a few half chances the best effort of the half came on the hour mark. CJ Grant picked the ball up in his own half and attacked at pace down the left hand side before cutting in to shoot. Grant was well tackled on the edge of the box, but the ball fell kindly for Mike Spaull who rattled the crossbar again with a left foot shot.
The game got off to a great start with both teams looking to stretch defences with some early through balls. Andrew Stidder had the first opportunity of the game and he saw his lop shot across the goal loop over the keeper to hit the far upright. Sports then went on to head over from the next move of the match which seemed to spark Almondsbury into life. In the 12 minute it was the visitors turn to hit the foot of the post. Scully Rogers reacted to a half clearance on the edge of the box but his shot rebounded away before anybody could follow up. Andrew Stidder playing wide on the left for the rested Joe Eyre, was again at the heart of further opportunities for Sports in the opening 20 minutes of the match. He drifted into the box from his wide position to side foot a low cross from CJ Grant towards the empty net only to find Merry in the Almondsbury goal equal to the effort spreading himself to smother from a few yards out. Stidder then had another chance to put Easington ahead. Mike Spaull’s cross caught everybody out hitting the cross bar but Stidder could only head the rebound against the post to go out for a goal kick.
Easington did eventually break the resolute Almondsbury defence down late in the game. Henry Rose crossed into the box and unfortunately for the visitors, the Almondsbury defended stretched to head away but only managed to glance the ball over the keeper into the empty net. Sports then managed the last 10 minutes well. Mastouras cut inside from the right to shoot but Rimmer was equal to the shot to tip over whilst Sports defended a number of diagonal balls into the box before the final whistle.

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division Wantage Town 2 Tuffley Rovers 1
Confusion in Tuffley Rovers’ defensive line, culminating in a poor kick from Merchant, almost gifted Robertson a second goal, but the Rovers keeper did well to recover and block the shot, before Ben Cook tested him again, a challenge he met with aplomb, diverting the ball away from the goal, with a strong lefthanded save. Almost on the stroke of half-time Rovers found themselves fortunate to remain just a single goal behind, as Patterson found space, but his shot crashed against the bar and bounced away to safety, seconds before the match official blew for half-time.
Despite another valiant effort, Tuffley Rovers slipped to another Hellenic League Premier Division defeat, as Wantage Town secured all three points at Alfredian Park on Saturday. Rovers came into the game off the back of an agonising 2-1 defeat against league leaders Brimscombe & Thrupp, a result that had ended a six match unbeaten run, but they fell behind to almost immediately against the second placed team, with the first goal coming after just 50 seconds.
Rovers’ boss, Mark Pritchett, was called into a playing role as the second-half started, as he replaced the injured Rhys Davies. With the Alfredian Park slop and the sun in their favour, Rovers started the half brightly and conjured a chance, albeit one that Will Dawes couldn’t direct beyond Meare, Fifteen minutes into the second period Rovers were level. Dawes was fouled and Alder, who had scored a heavily deflected free-kick in Tuesday’s defeat at Brimscombe, stepped up to send a superb, bending free-kick beyond Meare and into the bottom corner of the Wantage goal.
Rovers started on the front foot but when their first attack of the game broke down, a long punt downfield from Mark Flannagan found the prolific Steve Robertson, who produced an exquisite finish, lifting the ball over Luke Merchant and into the Rovers net. Less than five minutes later it could have been 2-0, but Robertson was adjudged to have fouled Macaulay Herbert, before putting the ball into the back of the net, and Rovers remained in the game, much to the annoyance of the Wantage Town bench. Although Wantage were very much on the front foot, they were thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping from Merchant, who made two good saves in quick succession, to keep out efforts from Jack Dunmall and Kaylem Patterson.
Dunmall then had an effort for Wantage Town, only to see it fizz narrowly wide, before Meare was called on again, to keep out another Dawes effort. On 73 minutes, with both sides trading blows, the game’s decisive moment arrived, as a cross to the far post was turned back by Patterson, into the path of Cook, who netted from two yards out to make it 2-1. Both teams continued to have chances and Rovers might have fallen further behind had Luke Payne not been alert enough to prevent Robertson’s effort, but there were no further goals and Rovers ended the day with another defeat, whilst their hosts maintained their challenge for the Hellenic League, Premier Division title.
The visitors found their way back into the game, with Kieran Alder and Henry Birkett linking to good effect, and Herbert twice went close, first drawing a good save from Curtis Meare, from an Alder free-kick, and then having a header that looked unlikely to beat Meare, but was blocked by his own player, Paul Carter, before it could reach the goal. Jake Rhodes, recalled in attack, then found himself behind the hosts’ defence, only for Meare to produce a good block, before Brad Cox headed the ball to safety. Alder then hit the bar with a clever free-kick that left Meare back-pedalling, before he produced another block to keep out a second Rhodes effort. 27
