Thornbury Town v Cheltenham Saracens

EDITOR'S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today's Hellenic League match against Cheltenham Saracens. This is Cheltenham's second trip to the Mundys this season, after our first round FA Vase win earlier in the year. Last year, Cheltenham Saracens just pipped us to second spot with their last game of the season. I'm expecting them to be up there with us again challenging for the top spots so a win today would be crucial in our promotion challenge.

Coming up we have two more home games - next weekend against Cirencester and the following Tuesday against Patchway in the GFA Cup. After next Saturday's game we also have a Race Night Fundraiser at Thornbury Cricket Club. Please come along and raise some funds for the whole club. Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY

It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous

winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

CHELTENHAM SARACENS CLUB HISTORY

Formed in 1964 as part of a multi-sport club, they joined the Cheltenham League Division 5. Gradually the football section grew in strength and was soon running two sides in the Cheltenham League, two in the Stroud & District, two Sunday teams and several youth teams. In 1986 the club were elected to the Hellenic League and stayed in Division 1 until they were promoted to the Premier Division in 1999/2000 with the second team also winning the Reserve Section that same year. After two years in the Premier the team were relegated back to Division 1 in 2001/2002.

In 2015/2016 the club narrowly missed out on winning the Division 1 title but secured promotion to the Premier Division by finishing second, however the club decided to remain in Division 1. The club has now a strong base to move forward with three senior teams on Saturdays and junior teams aged between 6-14. Thornbury Town v Cheltenham Saracens

GUEST ARTICLE

BY DAVID RICHARDSON The court ruling that has seen Ossett United ordered to pay £135,000 will have given NonLeague clubs plenty of food for thought about how they approach the issue of player-toplayer insurance. The BetVictor Northern Premier League North West club have been sued by Rees Welsh, who broke his ankle in a tackle while playing for Radcliffe Borough against Ossett Town in April 2015. Just over £19,000 in damages were awarded to the full-back, making his debut, with the club also having to pay out £115,000 in costs and legal fees. Ossett’s insurance, which included a public liability policy offered by the Northern Premier League and the minimum requirement as set out by the FA, did not cover player-to-player incidents and only covered their own legal fees should they lose a claim. The club is now considering selling their ground in order to pay off the hefty bill. NPL chairman Mark Harris told The NLP: “We make it clear within all the communications – and it’s in the third line of the first paragraph of the communication that goes out to clubs – that it does not include player-to-player cover.

If anything this is to remind clubs it doesn’t include player-to-player.” Whether the ruling will spark a wave of cases remains to be seen. It remains true that these incidents are very hard to prove, but there is no doubting it will leave much of the NonLeague game very uncomfortable. As it stands, the FA don’t have player-toplayer insurance as mandatory. Clubs are – or at least should be – aware of what they are covered for and that there is a potential risk of what has happened to Ossett happening to them. Harris believes clubs don’t have an appetite for that level of cover to be mandatory and the FA say their rules are reflecting what the game wants. It is only right the authorities reflects on this case, takes the views of clubs and experts and then decides the best course of action. Will this also put additional pressure on referees? As the sole independent party in these types of cases, a lot will be put on their reports and evidence. It is quite the position to be in. We must also not forget about Welsh. It can’t have been an easy route to go down and, however you feel about the ruling, he has suffered a major injury that will have affected not only his footballing career, but also his day-to-day life. The impact of any injury to any player can’t be underestimated.

“We will continue to recommend the policy we have for public liability and personal accident.

IRON ACTON RESERVES 0 THORNBURY TOWN 5 CLARE, COOKE, WILTON, YOUNG (2) The Thorns bagged a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes with goals from James Cooke, who slotted home after Iron Acton failed to clear a Town corner kick. Tom Clare made it two from close range shortly after a ball into the penalty box from a free-kick again caused havoc in the home defence.

Town were not to be denied a fifth goal and this came after another free kick saw the ball played to the back post where Matt Constable the chance. Town saw out the remainder of the match easily to secure the 3 points and move up to sixth in the league.

Iron Acton had to work hard to contain a Town side who were totally dominating the play and they were reward when they scored two more quick goals just before the break with Harrison Young grabbing a brace after the home keeper failed to hold onto a Sam Downes free kick with Young reacting the quickest another goal with a glancing header from another set piece The second half started with Thornbury controlling the tempo of the game and picking up where they finished the first half. Thornbury were awarded a penalty after Matt Constable was brought down by the home keeper who made amends by saving the penalty-kick.

Saturday 23rd November - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West

BOURTON ROVERS 2 TROTT, WEBLEY

THORNBURY TOWN 3 WORMWELL, LANCASTLE (2) Malmesbury Victoria’s match had fallen victim to the weather, so this was a chance for Thornbury to go top of the table with a win. With Jim Brock having completed his move to local rivals Tytherington and a couple of absentees in Sage & Benjamin the squad welcomed back Pete Fowler for the first time this season after surgery. From the outset it looked far from a top versus bottom contest and early Bourton pressure resulted in a corner, then on eight minutes a long ball saw their forward just onside and his low cross was steered home by Callum Trott to give the home side the lead. Kurtis Parkin injured his knee attempting the save and kicking duties were handed to the defence. The sides traded corners for a while with a Harry Brock shot well over the only effort of note but mid-way through the half a Jacob Farthing cross found its way to Marcus Wormwell who was in the right place at the right time to net the equaliser from close range. Toby Bennett then produced a good save from the home keeper but the main action towards the end of the period was in front of the Thornbury goal although the last kick of the half was a Brock lob just wide of the upright and the sides went in level at one-one. Despite increasing immobility and the inability

26

Thornbury Town v Cheltenham Saracens

to kick the ball the decision was made not to replace Parkin in goal and an early Thornbury free-kick was blazed over by Bennett. Almost immediately Bourton won a corner at the other end and with a good delivery met by the head of Adam Webley they re-took the lead. The lead didn’t last long however and after a few chances a Farthing run down the right finished with a cross to Lancastle who found the bottom corner. Then five minutes later, on the hour mark, Bennett & Brock combined to find Lancastle who finished from a narrow angle and the visitors were in front for the first time. Fowler entered the fray at this point to shore up the defence with Franklin replacing Viner in the middle of the park and as Bourton worked hard to get back in the game a high challenge on Guest saw the referee produce the first yellow of the game. Thornbury finished the game the stronger side with some good chances going begging – a header from a corner by Fowler going wide and a Brock one-on-one saw the keeper saving with his legs. The card count was evened up in injury time for a Franklin late challenge as they saw the game out. So top of the league but, based on this game, few easy games in the division and it’s where they are in April that count.
