Thornbury Town v Hereford Lads Club
EDITOR'S NOTES Good evening and welcome everyone to tonight's game against Hereford Lads Club. Our second game in 4 days against a Hereford club who have joined the Hellenic League this season. Tonight's opponents have done slightly better than their neighbours and haven't yet lost a league game. Our matches are currently averaging 6 goals a game, so expect a high scoring affair!
Between now and then we have a nice run of league games, so hopefully we can rack up some wins and go into that game full of confidence. For those of you who can't make our games make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook. At most games we will post goal updates on twitter so you can follow the score, and Gary Lancastle, has also been supplying us with some great video footage that we've been able to put together into highlight clips. Tom Shorey Programme Editor
If you haven't already, make sure to book your spot on the coach down to Downton in just under 2 weeks time. We need all your support towards progressing even further in the FA Vase.

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY
It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous
winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.
The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

GUEST ARTICLE
BY MATT BADCOCK WE ALMOST had to check the calendar on Saturday night. Yes, it is 2019, but here we still are reporting on alleged incidents of racism in Non-League football. So often are we quick to jump on it when heard in other countries but time and again this horrible issue keeps rearing its head in England and Wales and it can’t be brushed off anymore. Last weekend, word quickly filtered through from Hartlepool United’s National League game with Dover Athletic. Dover striker Inih Effiong had scored a penalty and in the aftermath of the celebrations, something had sparked up between the players and a section of the home support. When Pools players also took severe exception, it was clear something very untoward had happened. Whites boss Andy Hessenthaler later said he considered taking his players off – a move that would have been backed by Hartlepool manager Craig Hignett – but they chose to play on. Sadly, it wasn’t the only reported incident of the week with other accusations made elsewhere. Hartlepool, to their credit, have been swift in response. They made an announcement at half-time of the game, have dedicated their programme front cover for their next home game with the Kick It Out message and have

vowed to come down heavily on the culprit, who has also been arrested. I’ve written in the past about how it is a difficult subject to write about – and one that feels ever common – because I’ve not been the subject of racist abuse. I don’t know what that feels like to be vilified for the colour of my skin. But we must listen to the people who have. The people who know what it feels like to have someone spitting and snarling in your face or hidden by a keyboard and throwing out insults on social media. England star Raheem Sterling has been a fantastic advocate in recent times, speaking out against the injustices and asking society as a whole to look at itself in the mirror. Racism isn’t just a football problem but the game is a reflection of wider society. And it’s a game that has a platform to make a difference. It’s high time the authorities came down harder than ever when racist or homophobic behaviour is proven. There is no justification for it. And we can all play our part. If you hear something said at a Non-League game you’re watching, report it.

Sunday 15th September - Buildbase FA Vase Second Round Qualifying
WOKINGHAM & EMMBROOK 0 THORNBURY TOWN 1 LANCASTLE Thornbury made the long coach trip to Berkshire hoping to move another step closer to Wembley against a side playing at the same level in the football pyramid. In front of a large crown enjoying the sun, the game started slowly with the only action of note in the first ten minutes being a couple of Wokingham corners which were easily dealt with. The next period saw Thornbury start to get their passing game going, creating a string of corners which again didn’t come to anything – in fact the first effort of the game was half way through the half when Brandon Benjamin shot wide. Thornbury were now playing the better football but the best chance of the half fell to the Wokingham No.9 who dragged his shot wide after the defence got caught with the ball. The tail end of the half saw Kurtis Parkin in the Thornbury goal called upon more regularly but seldom really troubled with a free header from a free-kick going over. Nil – nil at half time with Thornbury having the majority of the possession but Wokingham having the better chances. Half time saw a couple of changes for the visitors with Mark Viner going off injured to be replaced by Jacob Farthing and a tactical switch seeing Rhys

Hodgson replace Jim Brock out wide. Luke Franklin and Hodgson began creating openings down the left with Craig Lancastle firing straight at the keeper, Hodgson, Bennett & Franklin having shots deflected and Benjamin heading over. With a welcome drinks break on 75 minutes and extra-time & penalties looming, Thornbury knew that one last sustained period of pressure could see them over the line. So, into the last ten and Toby Bennett found Harry Brock who crossed for leading scorer Lancastle to side-foot the ball past the ‘keeper to take the lead. Unsurprisingly Wokingham then got the ball forward into the Thornbury box at every opportunity but Parkin and the defence stood firm and a first clean sheet of the season saw Thornbury into the hat for the First Round proper. The draw for the first round proper was made on Monday lunchtime and Thornbury have another road trip – this time to Wiltshire where they meet Downton from the Wessex League on Saturday 12th October

MORETON RANGERS 1 WYATT
THORNBURY TOWN 2 BENNETT, LANCASTLE Back to league action for Thornbury - only their third league match of the season due to participation in four cups – and a trip to Moreton who were a bit of an unknown having won the division below to gain promotion and with a mixed bag of results so far. With the referee deeming both Thornbury kits – red home and blue away - clashed with the home strip a quick search of the facilities revealed some yellow shirts from the 1980’s and the game got going in brilliant sunshine. Moreton had the better of the early exchanges but the first 30 minutes produced little in the way of clear chances and at times the two keepers seemed to be trying to out do each other in the long kick department. Having shot straight at the keeper, Brandon Benjamin then turned provider after being released down the left and his pull back was met by Toby Bennett whose shot from 20+ yards found the bottom corner. Minutes later Harry Brock looked to have been taken town in the area but the referee adjudged it to be just outside and the resulting free-kick was driven in but the deflection was cleared off the line. There was still time for another chance when Craig Lancastle’s attempt to chip the keeper was met with an acrobatic save.
within a minute Jacob Farthing had found the side-netting and soon after Bennett fired past the left-hand post. Benjamin limped off on 51 mins with a hamstring injury to be replaced by Rhys Hodgson and Thornbury now had the better of the possession. A rare foray into the visitors box saw a home forward go over in the box only for the referee to show a yellow card for diving. Marcus Wormwell, ban over, replaced Farthing on the right on 68’ and it was only a few minutes later when Brock put the home defence under pressure, dispossessed the defender, broke forward and his chipped pass across goal found Lancastle at the far post to side-foot home – now scoring in seven consecutive matches. When Brock’s cross-shot hit the post on 80 minutes there was little sign of a nervy finish but when on 83’ Franklin somehow managed to release the Moreton No.11 to round Parkin and fire into the roof of the net – the home sides first attempt for 50 minutes – the game wasn’t quite over. Franklin nearly made amends in the very next minute when his deflected shot produced the save of the match from the home ‘keeper but as it was Thornbury saw the game out comfortably even managing to get the shot stats up without troubling the home keeper.
Thornbury started the second half brightly and

THORNBURY TOWN 5 BROCK (3), LANCASTLE (2)
HEREFORD PEGASUS 3 LANGFORD, BURGESS With the rest of the division involved in the League Cup this was a chance for Thornbury to improve their league position with a win at home to Hereford Pegasus. A couple of changes for Thornbury with Nathan Sage returning to the centre of defence after injury, Rhys Hodgson starting on the right and a strong bench. The crowd at the Mundy’s didn’t have to wait long for the first action when in the first minute Brandon Benjamin played the ball forward to Harry Brock who finished clinically. With a well worked free-kick straight from the training ground Hereford couldn’t convert after four minutes but only a few minutes later hesitation in the home box resulted in a clearance rebounding off a Hereford player into the goal – 1-1 and people still coming through the turnstile. The Hereford No.9 almost made it 2-1 when his shot flashed past the far post but it was Thornbury who re-took the lead when Brock outpaced the full-back and crossed for Craig Lancastle to score and increasing his scoring run to 8 games on the bounce. The impressive Hereford No.9 shot across goal once more but again it was the home side who scored the next goal when just

before the half-hour Brock cut in from the left and curled the ball into the far corner. Hereford weren’t finished for the half though and the No.9 finally got his goal on 35 mins with the No.11 failing to make the most of an opportunity to equalise just before the halftime whistle. 3-2 to Thornbury at the break in a wide-open game Tom Webb replaced Ollie Rawnsley (hamstring) for the second half and for a while the game quietened down – a Thornbury corner and a Joe Guest booking for a professional foul the only things of note. This all changed on 62 minutes when Brock was brought down as he rounded the ‘keeper and Lancastle made no mistake from the spot. A good spell of pressure then followed from the Hereford side with Kurtis Parkin in goal regularly punching clear and claiming crosses and on 85’ this was rewarded with a goal – 4-3 and a few Thornbury nerves… Just before the final whistle those nerves were relaxed when Parkin claimed an assist as Brock got his foot to a long goal kick and the ball rolled into the net for his hat-trick.
