MANAGER’S NOTES

Welcome everyone to the Mundy Playing Fields for today's game against Almondsbury. The cup games are coming thick and fast with this being our second of three games in just 7 days. I was delighted with the Saturday's result, showing we can compete with teams at a higher level. We'll now face an old foe of Stonehouse Town in the next round. Almondsbury, like us, we're put into the Hellenic League under some controversy like us. They've had a mixed start to the season, but I expect them to be one of the teams up there at the end of the season. This cup game proves a good testing ground for our league games later on in the season. Finally, I just want to thank again the committee, especially Richard and Toni. It's great to see the floodlights in use for the first time tonight. It makes the Mundys look great! Andy Davies, Manager 5

Thornbury Town V Almondsbury

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

We look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

MATCH REPORTS THORNBURY TOWN 2 (3 PENS) VINER, WORMWELL

LONGLEVENS 2 (2 PENS) CAMPBELL, LEWIS Premier Division Longlevens were the visitors to a wet and not so miserable Mundy Fields on Saturday and found themselves on the wrong end of a cup upset, with Thornbury progressing after a penalty shoot out.

Emmett’s header comfortably. However a couple of minutes before the break Town almost broke the deadlock Marcus Wormwell’s delicate chip over Longlevens keeper Martin’s head being cleared off the line by Barnett.

The incessant rain meant a smaller than usual crowd witnessed what was an entertaining game. The visitors settled the more quickly as they looked for an early goal with Shaun O’Connor shooting straight at Town keeper Kurtis Parkin when well placed. Moments later Parkin was in action again saving Ed Smyllie’s header from a corner.

Thorns were happy with the deadlock at the halftime break but within two minutes of the restart found themselves behind. The visitors goal stemmed from a Town attack when Mark Viner appeared to be pushed over in the visitors penalty area. With Thorns appealing for a spot kick, Longlevens broke quickly upfield and a cross from the left found the dangerous Jamie Campbell who netted from close range. The lead lasted just two minutes with Wormwell’s shot hitting Martin and flying over the bar. Toby Bennett’s corner was then firmly headed home by Viner.

Thorns were struggling to gain a foothold in midfield as Longlevens continued to press forward and Myron Turner shot wide with 20 minutes gone. Parkin saved a dangerous looking cross from Lewis with Town skipper Pete Fowler finally clearing the danger. Almost immediately Thorns broke away and Matt Davis’ ball into the near post saw Smyllie clear for a corner as Marcus Wormwell tried to apply the scoring touch.

Viner then set up Bennett but the midfielder’s shot was saved at fullstretch by Martin. Longlevens weathered the storm and enjoyed a purple patch of their own with Welch going close before they retook the lead on the hour mark following a corner. Emmett’s cross into the area was flicked on by Lewis, the ball drifting into the net at the far post. Emmett and Welch both had chances to increase the

Town’s midfield gradually took a grip on the game but as a result goalmouth action was at a premium, although Parkin was again in action 10 minutes before the break saving 22

Thorns came close to snatching the lead on a couple of occasions, Martin tipping efforts from Harry Brock and Brandon Benjamin over the bar. In the dying seconds Town survived a scare clearing a goalbound effort off the line to set up a penalty shoot out.

Town keeper Kurtis Parkin became the hero of the hour saving 3 of the visitors 5 penalties, whilst Pete Fowler, Luke Franklin and Harry Brock did the business for Thorns to secure a 3-2 penalty shoot out win and a 2nd Round tie at home to old rivals Stonehouse Town.

UHLSPORT HELLENIC LEAGUE LATEST ROUND-UP Ascot United 1 Brimscombe & Thrupp 3 Visitors Brimscombe and Thrupp produced a fine display to beat league leaders Ascot United 3-1 on Saturday. The Gloucestershire side were resolute and creative in racing into a three-nil lead, before Ascot were given a lifeline that they could not build upon. Both sides came into the game in decent form – and expectedly so given their respective league positions of first and third – but it was the visitors’ record of five wins from six and scoring 23 goals in the process which was most impressive.

added a fourth when Pitt flashed another shot wide from a tight angle, before Gale’s fabulous save tipped substitute Jonny Denton’s free kick over and Minhas shot wide late-on as the home side tried in vain to get back on terms. Malmesbury Victoria 0 Clanfield 3 Clanfield ran out 3-0 winners at the Flying Monk on Saturday against previously unbeaten Malmesbury Victoria, it was without doubt the Robins most comprehensive performance of the season to date and fully deserving of the three points on offer.

The visitors would take an eighth minute lead after clearing an Ascot corner, and after a hesitant George Lock was exposed at right back, Jack Horrell slid the ball through for Ollie Pitt, who looked to have given himself too much to do but found the net with a deflected leftfooted shot which looped up over Lee Allen and into the net.

With the calming influence of James Domm returning between the sticks and a dominate back four of Jack Robinson, Matt Knapton, Josh Gibbens and player manager Chris Blakley, the host were restricted to next to nothing for their ninety minutes effort, the Robins midfield, marshalled commandingly by Adam Pendall never gave the Vics time to settle on the ball and play their game, up front the diminutive Mike Duerden chased every cause, however the star of the performer was left sided midfielder Jordan Thomas, what a young prospect this lad is, playing with the maturity of a player twice his age, comfortable on the ball, never afraid to take on his opponent but when needed, always played the simple pass, this Clanny discovery certainly has a bright future ahead of him if he maintains this level and improves upon it, which he surely will under the guidance of manager Jamie Butt.

Harry Laflin was the most likely source of inspiration for the home side, and he would scoop the ball over from near the penalty spot midway through the half after Louis Bouwers had nodded Samir Regragui’s corner down. Laflin’s neat spin then teed up Nathan Minhas to pick out James Haworth, but his effort was chalked off for offside after it had whistled into the bottom right, before Sam Blackie went up the other end and threatened to walk past the entire home defence before seeing his shot blocked. Laflin’s deft flick then released Callum Carlisle, whose cross into the six yard box begged someone to convert, before the visitors doubled their advantage when Blackie’s long-range swerving effort found its way past Allen, who should have done better. Somewhat comically, referee Gifford Manyange then blew for half time two minutes early, before half of the players were summoned back onto the pitch to complete the remainder of the half after consultation between management and officials. Those remaining moments of the half were inconsequential, and the Lilywhites – playing in effervescent green – re-entered for the second half with a two-goal advantage.

As for the game itself, almost total dominance from the first minute to the last, never really looking in any trouble against a more than useful Vics side who missed their influential striker Shane Bumphrey , the only negative on the performance, not adding at least another couple of goals their play deserved. Dan Gardner opened the scoring for the visitors on the half hour mark when cutting into the penalty area from the right and fired home, catching the Malmesbury keeper at his near post, Clanfield then went on to create several more chances before going in at the break one goal to the good.

And, by the end of it, they still held that advantage after both sides scored again, but it was the visitors’ goal which was the pick of the bunch when Horrell’s rasping half volley into the top right from distance put his side three up; 63 minutes played. Before that, Minhas had stung Gale’s palms before winning - and scoring - a penalty when Chris Greenough was penalised for holding, but at that point just 25 minutes remained. As it was, the visitors defended resolutely and might have

On sixty seven minutes, Jordan Cormack doubled the visitors lead when running on to a through ball into the area and calmly slotting home past the on rushing Ant Brown in the Malmesbury goal, the Vic’s were clearly deflated after the second goal and it came as no surprise when Nathan Kimber did what he does best when latching onto a pass on the left hand side of the penalty area before lashing a blinding twenty yarder into the far right-hand corner of the goal, another of

Nathan’s individual efforts for goal of the season, this rounded of a thoroughly professional performance from Clanfield and a victory that see’s them climb to seventh in the table with games in hand on the sides above them.

POS

Wokingham & Emmbrook 2 Didcot Town Dev 2 Honours even after this league clash at Bracknell Town FC played largely in driving rain. Didcot started fairly well with James Tanner shooting over from a Keiran Davies knock down. A Matt Taylor cross was knocked away for a corner and in the 18th minute Ross MacDonald skinned his marker and his cross was punched away by home keeper Felix Davies under pressure. Another MacDonald cross found Tanner who was crowded out before he could clearly shoot. Siji Akinlosi headed wide fom a corner. The Sumas came in to the game with a cross that hit the crossbar before MacDonald found Kieran Collins whose rasping shot was punched over the bar. Akinlosi was nextto shoot from a MacDonald cross however this was blocked by a defender. The half finished with some Wokingham pressure via two corners. In the first minute of the second half Matt Taylor provided an excellent cross which Davies could not reach and Matt Taylor and Taylor Janes both provided good crosses in a busy early spell for the visitors. Profligacy came back to bite Didcot however when a fine through ball found a home attacker bearing down on goal. Sam Baldock in the Didcot goal came out and got a hand on the ball deflecting it away however the home attacker continued clashing in to Baldock and the referee awarded a penalty to the home team. Further ignominy ensued for Baldock when he was booked and Jack Waite scored from the kick. Didcot though continued to attack and Keiran Davies should have scored when he dived at a Taylor cross but missed the ball. Davies then slid a free kick low and wide of the goal before he made amends with a fine low finish when he pealed away from his marker after James Tanner had made a good break from midfield and found him with a pass.

Davies then had a shot saved following a Didcot free kick but Wokingham took the lead again when a breakaway looked suspiciously offiside and the ball was headed over Baldock and in to the net. Just three minutes later and Callum Young got enough on a free kick cross to divert the ball in to the net for the equaliser. Sam Baldock had a fine save from a Danny Blatchford piledriver before Didcot substitute Jake Keeble crossed but it was just beyond the stretching MacDonald. Keeble then had a rasping shot from distance tipped over the bar and Davies missed a great chance to win it in the final minute. The match finished uncomfortably when Keeble was fouled and Joe Cummuskey for the home team was red carded. Didcot probably felt this was two points dropped given their better possession and chances however it was heartening to see them come from behind twice away from home.
