MANAGER’S NOTES
Welcome everyone to the Mundy Playing Fields for today's Hellenic League cup game against Binfield, especially our away travellers who have come quite a distance today from the other side of Reading! I've been told it's possibly the furthest a club has ever travelled to play us! Today we have the 2nd of our run of 3 cup games. Unfortunately that run of cup games didn't start how we planned with old County League foes, Stonehouse Town, beating us 3-1 on Tuesday night. Hopefully we can bounce back today and achieve a giantkilling of our own against Premier Division opposition. On Tuesday we will be playing our local rival Tytherington Rocks in the Subsidiary Cup. This match will also represent the official opening of the improvements to the Mundys. Please do try and come along to celebrate the massive achievement of all the works going on behind the scene. I hope you all enjoy today's game! Andy Davies, Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

Thornbury Town V Binfield
BINFIELD FC CLUB HISTORY Binfield FC first played in 1892, during the reign of Queen Victoria, making us one of the oldest Association Football clubs in the world! The team comprised young men from the local brickworks and those who worked on the land around Binfield. The club’s early years were spent in the Ascot and District League, where we enjoyed many successful seasons winning the Fielden Cup for the first time in 1924 and on eleven further occasions since.
in 1987 and 1988 we won Division 2 and then Division 1 of the Reading and District League. In 1989, we joined the high-profile Charrington Chiltonian League, winning the Division 1 title at the first attempt – a feat we repeated in 1996 - and reaching the final of the League Cup. The following year we finished runners-up to Peppard, despite remaining unbeaten from November until the end of the campaign. In 2001 we merged with Binfield’s junior club, Binfield Forest FC, and in doing so significantly increased the membership, with over 20 teams playing every weekend – this season we will field 36 teams each week. The junior part of the club is very important to Binfield with FA Charter status having been achieved in 2007 and in 2013 we were awarded the Berks & Bucks FA and South East Regional FA Charter Status Community Club of the Year awards, culminating in the club being invited to the FA Community Shield at Wembley in August 2013. We’re also in our fourth season of a partnership scheme with Reading FC where some of our younger players have the opportunity to train with Reading. In 2003 we added an Allied Counties Youth team which is now providing a steady stream of talented young players ready for Senior football for the Reserves and 1st Team. Since 2005, progress at the club has been swift, with the addition of floodlights and later a seated stand. The club is tirelessly working to improve our facilities with our “continuous improvement” plan making further change to the car park, to the club house and a new stand around our Tea Bar. We constantly strive to improve all elements of the facilities
During the 2nd World War, we joined the Great Western Combination League, winning the championship in 1947. During that period we also won the Berks and Bucks Junior Cup and the Maidenhead Norfolkian Cup and it was not unusual to see crowds in excess of 1,000 at our Forest Road ground. In 1950 we joined the Reading and District League, where we remained for the next forty years. In 1972 Binfield won promotion to the Premier Division for the first time and although relegated two years later we returned in 1976 as 1st Division Champions. A huge crowd, reminiscent of the 1940’s, packed Forest Road to witness our promotion. In 1980, the club made an important decision to move from Forest Road, where facilities were shared with the cricket club, to our current site in Hill Farm Lane. Turning that field into the football ground we see today was a massive task. Thanks to an enormous amount of physical work by the members of the club the area was levelled and drained within three years. The members then set about building the club house. This progress off the field was matched on it when 12
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc from changing rooms to a playing surface we are extremely proud of, to benefit everyone from our Under 6s up to our 1st Team and Veterans. We won the Hellenic League Division 1 East title in 2008-09 and gained promotion to the next level of English football, where we finished runners up in the 2010/11 Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division, 3rd in 2012/13 and 5th in 2014.
(last 32) in 2011/12 in an incredible season of cup success. The 2011/12 team is the most successful in our history, winning both the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Trophy and the Hellenic Floodlit Cup in five glorious April 2012 days. We also reached the final of the Hellenic Challenge Cup. Seasons 2017/18 saw great progress at the club. With the successful building of new dressing rooms, disabled access paths and fencing together with a clubhouse refurbishment . On the pitch the 1st team finished 7th in the Premier Division and won the Floodlit cup with a 2-1 win over all conquering Thatcham Town, whilst the reserves finished 4th in the Suburban Premier and the Youth team won the Allied Counties South Division.
August 15th 2009 will long be remembered as Binfield’s first game in the legendary FA Cup – and we have enjoyed some good runs reaching the 1st Qualifying round in each of the last two seasons with 400 supporters enjoying the visit of Margate in 2010 and a trip to Slough Town and narrow defeat in 2011. In 2013 the side reached the 2nd Qualifying round, losing to a 96th minute free kick as Leatherhead came from behind. Binfield entered the FA Vase for the first time in season 2008-09 and enjoyed three rounds, before reaching the 4th round
Ultimately the step up to the next tier of English non league football is our aim.
