MANAGER’S NOTES
Welcome everyone to the Mundy Playing Fields for today's game against Highworth Town Reserves. Our final cup game in this run of three and from last weekend when we were the underdogs it's now our turn to be the favourites. Highworth's first team got promoted last season into the Southern league so I'm sure their reserve team has improved as well so we will need to make sure we dont get complacent. It was a shame to fall to defeat in our first game under the lights at the Mundys on Tuesday, hopefully we can bounce back with a win today. Andy Davies, Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

HIGHWORTH TOWN RES. CLUB HISTORY Highworth Town Football Club was formed in 1893. We joined the Cirencester & district league and it took us some time to record our first honours, until 1909-10 in fact, when we won both the Swindon junior cup and the local advertiser cup, a cup we captured again in 1912-13. After winning the Cirencester & District League Division Two championship in 193132, we moved to the Swindon & District League, where we completed the third Division championship and Swindon Junior Cup double in 1933-34. The 1950s saw us make a dramatic rise through the local football ranks. We won the Swindon & District League third Division title again in 1954-55 and then the Division two title the following season. One more season was needed to clinch the Division one title and also the Wilts junior cup. We then went on to win the premier Division title in 1957-58, along with the Faringdon Thursday Memorial cup and the following season we were the Premier Division champions again, also winning the advertiser cup. We continued to dominate the Swindon & District premier Division in the 1960s, winning four successive titles from 1960-61 and another hat-rick from 1965-66 to 1967-68, making seven titles in eight seasons. We reached the final of the Wilts senior cup for the first time in 1962-63 and won it the following season. There was a switch to the Wilts Combination League, where we finished as runners-up in Division two in 1970-71. 1972-73 saw
another Wilts senior cup victory and all this success prompted us to join the Hellenic League. We achieved our first honours in 1988-89, winning the first Division challenge cup and reached the final of the Wilts senior cup yet again. We finally achieved premier Division status in 1993-94 gaining promotion after finishing third in Division one. Since then we have been winners of the Wilts senior cup in 1995-96, 1997-98, 2008-09 and again in 2014-15, winners of the Hellenic challenge cup in 2011-12, winners of the Hellenic supplementary cup in 1998-99 and runners up in 2003-04, runners-up in the premier Division in 1999-00 and winners of the premiership title in 2004-05. In more recent history, which reached the semi-final of the FA Vase in 2014-15 where we were knocked out by eventual winners North Shields in a closely fought two-legged tie. This season also saw us pick up the Wilts senior cup. In the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons we were runners-up in the Wilts senior cup to Swindon Supermarine and Chippenham town respectively, both of which played at higher levels than us. Also in the 2017-18 season we saw promotion to the Southern League Division 1 South as we finished as the best third placed team across the whole country. This means we are now playing the highest level of football the club has seen.

MATCH REPORTS THORNBURY TOWN 2 LANCASTLE (2)
ALMONDSBURY 3 RUGMAN, CHICK, BAKER The Mundy Playing Fields were bathed in light on Tuesday evening as a crowd in excess of 100 came to watch Thornbury Town’s first game under their new floodlights. Unfortunately near neighbours Almondsbury spoiled the celebrations with a deserved win in the Hellenic League Subsidiary Cup. In the opening quarter of an hour it was the visitors who enjoyed the majority of the possession but it was Thorns who had the first serious attempt on goal when Scott McLoud latched on to Jim Brock’s pass, but his shot was well saved by Almondsbury keeper Matt Semple. Almost immediately the visitors broke down the left and the cross in to Town’s penalty area caused panic but Aaron Clark cleared the danger under pressure from the visitors strikers. The game swung back up to the other end of the pitch where a Harry Brock run into the area saw the young striker brought down and last season’s leading scorer Craig Lancastle despatched the resultant spot kick to give Thorns the lead. The visitors were stung into action and Bisp’s curling shot on 25 minutes went wide of the post whilst Nick Rugman and Ben Chick both went close moments later. However 10 minutes before the break Almondsbury drew level when the ball broke to Chick in the area and the striker made space for himself before slotting the ball
past Kurtis Parkin. The visitors continued to press and took the lead moments before the half-time whistle when Baker played the ball across the face of the goal and Rugman steered the ball home. The second half started in much the same vein with Almondsbury quickly closing down Thorns when they had the ball and enjoying the majority of possession. However a double substitution midway through the half saw Town reassert themselves as they started to put pressure on the Almondsbury defence but without creating any clear cut chances or testing Semple in the visitors goal who had injured himself in the first half. The closest Town came to equalising was when Joe Guest had an effort from the edge of the penalty area but his shot went wide of the far post with Semple beaten. Five minutes from time Almondsbury secured the win when Danny Lane and Baker linked up inside the penalty area with Baker giving Parkin no chance from close range. The visitors were happy to play out time but Thorns, to their credit, looked to get themselves back in the game and in the last minute were given a lifeline when Harry Brock was again fouled in the area with the same result, Lancastle sending Semple the wrong way from his spot kick. However there wasn’t time for Thorns to grab an equaliser. 22

UHLSPORT HELLENIC LEAGUE LATEST ROUND-UP Brackley Town Saints 1 Royal Wooton Bassett 1 Many say it’s the final score that matters not the STATS, but the STATS do help to tell the story. Saints had 21 shots, 5 on target and scored once. RWB had 6 shots, 2 on target and scored once. Saints had 9 corners, RWB had 2. Town came into this game with their 3 recognised strikers unavailable. After a good performance on Wednesday evening in the Hillier Cup Owen James was given the nod to lead the line. The pitch at St James Park was looking fantastic with the pre match rain creating an almost perfect playing surface. RWB were fast out of the traps and they had one of their 2 shots on goal in the first minute with Worby reacting smartly to tip the ball over the bar.
they re-grouped to finish the half strongly with a corner leading to desperate RWB defending blocking shots from Kille, Ball and Kille again. Hammond then created room for a shot but could not test the keeper. Saints were at it as soon as the second half started. A flowing move involving Hammond, Baldwin and Watts saw Ball break into the box and shoot only for the keeper to save well with his feet. Hartley then played Middleton down the line and his cross found its way to Ball whose shot was just off target. Saints could sense that the equaliser was coming and from another sweet passing move it did. James did well to battle for the ball in an advanced position and stab it to Watts whose composed left foot finish was too good for the keeper.
Saints were moving the ball around nicely but RWB defended well and it was not until the 7th minute that Saints carved out a clear-cut opening. From a Middleton throw Baldwin found Hammond who linked with Watts who played an astute pass to George Ball whose clip over the keeper caught his shoulder and looped up and hit the bar. On 10 minutes a super long ball from Baldwin set Kille free down the left. The goalie was stranded, but Kille’s attempt on goal just didn’t quite have enough pace and the defender was able to scoop it off the line.
Ball was continuing to cause problems with his direct running and pace and another shot was deflected and somehow saved by the RWB keeper. RWB were under serious pressure now and were forced to concede a couple of free kicks in dangerous areas. From one Baldwin flighted in a perfect cross, Goddard had timed his run perfectly but was unable to keep his header on target. A few minutes later Ball played in Watts down the right channel and his pinpoint pull back was met by Kille, but his right foot shot cleared the bar. Saints were enjoying an extended purple patch and Worby was very much a spectator. James set up Hammond who curled his shot agonisingly wide of the right hand post. Baldwin struck a left foot shot which had beaten the unsighted keeper but which flew wide.
RWB were really struggling with the Saints movement and it seemed only a matter of time before the goal would come. On 23 minutes Ball ended a strong run with a great shot but found the RWB goalkeeper in fine form turning the ball round the post for the corner, from which the ball fell to Baldwin who was unable to keep his volley down and on target. A further shot from Ball and a Baldwin free kick nearly brought the opening goal, but as can often be the way RWB took the lead against the run of play. On 34 minutes and in their eagerness to win the ball back Saints gave away an unnecessary free kick out on the right wing. This was well defended, but led to a corner from which the ball fell kindly to the RWB centre half who struck a powerful shot which Baldwin instinctively attempted to block but he could only divert the ball into the top corner of the net. Saints were knocked out of their rhythm and were ragged for the next 5 minutes but
Holmer Green 1 Tuffley Rovers 2 Tuffley Rovers recorded a second win in three Uhlsport Hellenic League games, albeit in a spell punctuated by their exit from the Buildbase FA Vase and GFA Challenge Trophy, to lift themselves away from the bottom of the table, as they returned from the long trip to Holmer Green with all three points. Rovers’ boss Mark Pritchett rang the changes after the midweek defeat to local rivals Longlevens, as he played his Assistant Manager, Alex O’Leary, joined him in the starting eleven, amidst five changes in

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc personnel. Alongside O’Leary, there were recalls for Kane Winman, replacing the injured Luke Merchant, Harry Walker, Dominik Kent and Ryan Dobbins, whilst Ben Prictor was pushed into a more advanced role, having played at left-back in the previous two games.
against West, as the Holmer Green front-man drew a series of impressive saves, when he looked set to score on each occasion. James then entered the fray, replacing O’Leary, who had tired during a first appearance since 25 August, and he had a reasonable headed chance, within moments, but Carter’s cross, after good work from Kent, just drifted out of play before the experienced wide-man could head it towards Brown’s goal. With a little over ten minutes remaining, Alder entered the fray, replacing Kent, but Rovers were to see the ill-luck which has accompanied their season to date continue, within a minute, as Walker’s backpass to Winman was chased down by Holmer Green substitute Dean Powles, who blocked the keeper’s kick and saw the ball roll into the unguarded net, to make it 1-1.
The much changed Rovers team almost fell behind immediately from the kick-off, as Adam Riley found space on the left-hand side of the Rovers goal, but his shot went narrowly wide of Winman’s goal within 30 seconds of the start. Winman was much busier than his counterpart, Aaron Brown, but was largely untested and Jonothan Cox’s ninth minute effort was comfortably saved by the young Rovers keeper. Having been recalled to the team, the back-up keeper might have hoped for a quieter start to the game, but he was increasingly busy, producing an excellent stop to deny former Ascot United forward James West with another stop, on 16 minutes, before Kent fired narrowly over with Rovers’ first chance of note, on 19 minutes.
Jack Phillips was almost the beneficiary of a wonderful passing move, only for Sam Hill’s cross to evade his attempt to turn it home, before Winman once again denied West, as the hosts counter-attacked. Although he hasn’t been in his usual sparkling form, James’ introduction had proved positive for Rovers and he played a pivotal role, alongside that of another substitute, as his team regained the lead; heading a long ball from Pritchett into the path of Alder, who showed great composure, holding off a defensive challenge before rolling the ball beyond the advancing Brown and into the bottom corner, to make it 2-1. Winman had the opportunity to make another sensational save, blocking Matt Wooster’s effort, before diving on a loose ball, to keep the hosts out, meaning Alder’s second goal of the season proved sufficient to earn potentially the most valuable three points during Pritchett’s reign as manager.
The spell that followed saw Rovers very much on the front-foot, with O’Leary and Prictor drawing saves from Brown, but Pritchett’s men were reminded of the threat facing them, on 27 minutes, as Winman did well to deny Cox, as the Holmer Green forward cut in from the left before bending a shot goalwards. With the half-hour mark arriving, Rovers began to recover their poise and thought they should have had a penalty, as O’Leary was brought down by a robust challenge from James Britnell, although the referee, Mr Atkinson, correctly adjudged the tackle to be just outside the area. When Paul Carter took the resultant free-kick, further appeals for a penalty followed, but they proved meaningless, as Carter swung the ball back into the box and the diminutive figure of Dobbins rose highest to head the ball home from six yards. The second half started with both sides attempting to reassert control but it was Pritchett’s side who were brightest and they should have gone further in front, on 54 minutes, but Joel White’s header, from an O’Leary cross, went back across the goal, rather than troubling Brown. Kent drew another save from Brown, as Rovers looked to start strongly, but the hosts came again and Winman went through a golden patch that contrived to keep the score in Rovers’ favour. First, the youngster dived low to keep out another Cox effort, before a stunning stop that deflected West’s powerful shot onto the post, before it rebounded away for a throw-in. For a period of ten minutes, it was Winman
