THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

NEWENT TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY Newent Town AFC was established in 1920, so it is now on the verge of the Centenary!!
They spend three years in Gloucestershire Northern Senior 1, with a best place finish of 3rd, picking up the League Cup twice in a row.
Through history Newent have played in the North Gloucester League and were promoted to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League in the 1970’s. Then spend a while bouncing down and back up again, before finally reaching the Gloucester County League, staying there for six years.
Having spent considerable money and work on the facilities, Newent were invited into the Uhlsport Hellenic League system in division Two West. Under the new Management of Ben Stringer and Martin Elton (former Newent players), they finished as Division Two West Champions at the first attempt.
After a tumble, the big push started in 2012 when Newent won the North Gloucestershire Premier Title on the last game of the season.
So the club starts 2018/19 at the highest level in their history, with much excitement and plenty of work still to complete by March 31 2019 to reach the ground grading requirement.
Then completing a back-to-back promotion from Gloucestershire Northern Senior 2 the very next season.

MATCH REPORTS THORNBURY TOWN 6 FRANKLIN (2), WORMWELL (2), BUDD, OG
TYTHERINGTON ROCKS 0 It was an evening of celebration at the Mundy Fields on Tuesday evening when Thornbury Town Mayor Shirley Holloway performed the official opening of the new football club facilities in front of a large crowd. Over 150 spectators then watched a dominant Town enjoy a comfortable win against local rivals Tytherington Rocks in what was always an entertaining game. The opening exchanges were fairly even with neither keeper seriously troubled although Thorns thought they should have had a penalty awarded when Toby Bennett seemed to be brought down in the penalty area. The Thorns defence, well marshalled by Pete Fowler and Nathan Sage snuffed out any potential threat and Rocks were restricted to long range efforts on goal. Town’s Luke Franklin had a couple of shots from distance that went wide and Skidmore in the Rocks goal did well to punch a Harry Brock effort away. Brock’s speed was causing the Rocks defence all sorts of problems and on the half hour mark he was brought down in full flight in the area to win a penalty which was duly fired home by Marcus Wormwell. A couple of minutes later Town keeper Kurtis Parkin had to head clear on the edge of his area, the ball falling kindly for Chris McGiveron but he couldn’t control his shot which went well wide. Skidmore was in action again 5 minutes before the break saving well from a goal bound Asher Budd shot. Thorns doubled
their lead a minute before the break when Nathan Sage cut out a Tytherington through ball and set Budd clear. The young striker went past his marker before cutting the ball back for Wormwell to score his second at the far post. The visitors started the second half on the front foot and Parkin saved Austin’s freekick at the foot of the post but it was Thorns who increased their lead 4 minutes in, when Toby Bennett’s free kick caused panic in the Rocks defence and Asher Budd steered the ball into the net. Another Bennett free kick on the hour led to another Town goal when this time Rocks’ skipper Nathan Croot could only head past his own keeper. Tytherington were now looking a beaten side and Wormwell went close to securing his hat trick but his shot curled wide of the post with Skidmore stranded. With 10 minutes left Luke Franklin made a strong run into the penalty area before setting up Harry Brock but his shot hit Skidmore and was deflected on to the post before being cleared. Franklin was in action again 5 minutes later when he latched on to Jim Brock’s through ball before firing past Skidmore. The pair linked up again to set up Craig Lancastle but his shot was well saved by the keeper. However Franklin wasn’t finished and again supplied by Jim Brock he outpaced the defence before stroking the ball home. 22

THORNBURY TOWN 6 FOWLER, LANCASTLE (3), BENNETT, DAVIS,
Thornbury Town put in another impressive performance on Saturday when they made their first ever trip to Newent Town. On a cold and wet afternoon, Newent’s carpet-like pitch suited Town’s style of play and they took a 2nd minute lead when Jim Brock’s curling free kick was headed firmly home by skipper Pete Fowler. The hosts always looked dangerous in attack and Jones’ shot from Blood’s free kick 5 minutes later caused problems for Thorns defence, but Nathan Sage finally headed clear. Craig Lancastle netted in the 10th minute but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside decision but just 3 minutes later a great move down the left saw Jim Brock cut the ball back for Lancastle to net the first of his hat trick. These early setbacks didn’t stop Newent pushing forward and with Colling always posing a threat Town’s back line always had to be on their toes. On the half hour mark a long ball over the defence saw Kurtis Parkin charging out of his goal but miscued his clearance but somehow managed to block Colling’s shot when the ball fell kindly for the striker. Moments later a Nathan Sage tackle denied Colling and then Parkin saved at full stretch from the striker. However, Newent were always vulnerable to a quick break and 10 minutes before the break Harry Brock was unceremoniously brought down in the penalty as he went around his marker. Craig Lancastle made no mistake from the spot to give Thorns a comfortable 3
goal lead at half time. With the wind behind them in the second period the hosts pressed forward from the start, but it was Thornbury who drew first blood. Matt Davis, who was returning after injury, turned his marker and crossed to Craig Lancastle who calmly completed his hat trick at the far post. The introduction of Newent substitute Sanchez Grange livened up the home attack and Thorns had to thank Kurtis Parkin for maintaining their lead, the keeper pulling off a series of good saves from Gibbs, Nutting and Grange. However, there was nothing he could do when Grange went clear and fired past the keeper and although Nathan Sage cleared off the line, Grange netted the rebound. Newent continued to press and Parkin then pulled off a superb double save from Nutting. However, Thorns gradually clawed their way back into the game and they extended their lead again in the 73rd minute when Tom Webb set up Toby Bennett whose shot went under the diving Hart. Still the hosts weren’t finished and Jones low drive flew past Parkin for Newent’s second 3 minutes later. It was Town though who had the final say in the 88th minute when Bennett and Marcus Wormwell linked well to set up Matt Davis. The striker rounded his marker before stroking the ball into the net to secure another 3 points which keeps Thorns in the third spot.
