Thornbury Town V Tytherington Rocks

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

TYTHERINGTON ROCKS FC CLUB HISTORY Tytherington Football Club was formed in 1896 by the local Headmaster, Mr Emanu- el, and others including the Rev John Bingley. Rev. Bingley stipulated that, to gain his support, the club should play in amber and black – his old college colours – Brase- nose in Oxford.

and toilet block together with electricity! The Reserves reformed in Division 7 and the first team reached Division 1 for the 1987-88 season. In 1987-88 saw the formation of the third team joining Division 7 and at the same time Streamside Juniors were adopted as Tytherington Rocks Juniors. A floodlit training pitch was opened in 1988. Rocks entered Premier Division 2 and by 1993 arrived in Premier Division 1. Ground improvements continued with team dugouts and perimeter fencing. As Champions of the Bristol and Suburban Premier League in 1996-97, it was shock and disappointment when their Gloucester- shire County League application was rejected. Undaunted, attention then turned to the clubhouse. A new bar, separate changing facilities, referee accommodation for both sexes and a spectator stand, all raised the profile of the club and, in 1997-98, this time the County League application was successful.

The club played in the Wotton-Under-Edge League and travelled to away matches by waggonette, a four-wheeled horse drawn cart, with seats along both sides. The club played at many different grounds in the early days, including Mill-Leaze Fields behind the village shop. They eventually found a permanent home at the Hardwicke Playing Fields. The club used the Swan Inn as their changing rooms until a new pavilion was erected by the Parish Council, on the playing fields in 1938. In the 1920s Tytherington FC was suspended by the Gloucestershire Football Association for non payment of a fine. The fine followed a referee being jostled into an adjoining brook after what the home side felt were some dubious decisions! No pay – no play, so Tytherington disbanded until 1932 when Tytherington Rocks FC was formed, joining the Bristol Suburban League. War disrupted the local leagues and Rocks rejoined Division 1 in 1947. The same year a youth team called the Pebbles was formed and played in the Glouces- tershire Junior Boys’ League.

The team survived a difficult first season but, during the next four years, enjoyed top half finishes and were GFA Challenge Trophy Finalists, League Cup Finalists and, in 200304, were County League Runners-up. Hellenic League football and Hellenic League status Division 1 [West] arrived in 2004-05. Season 2011-12 was to prove to be the first of three outstanding years for Tytherington Rocks. The 1st team finished 18 points clear to win the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 [West] title, followed by a 3rd place and then champions again in 2013-14, this time by 5 points. However, once again, in 2014, as in

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc previous years, a transfer request to move to the Toolstation Western League was rejected by the FA. This refusal had a devastating effect on the club with players and team management of both 1st team and Reserves leaving en masse.

History will record that several managers and committee members worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of the club during the following four seasons. The Reserves lasted for only the first of those seasons before folding. One positive feature has been the participation of the 1st team in the Buildbase FA Vase competition.

August 2018 saw the prospect of a 1st team still in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 [West], a Reserve team hoping to re-enter the Bristol Suburban League at a realistic level and an U18 squad playing under floodlights in the Somerset Floodlit League.

MATCH REPORTS THORNBURY TOWN 1(2) WORMWELL, FOWLER

BINFIELD 1(4) DOWNES, MOORE, HOWELL, DAVIES Thornbury exited the Uhlsport Hellenic League Challenge Cup on Saturday after a hard fought match against opponents from the Hellenic Premier League. Binfield travelled up from Berkshire for their first ever visit to the Mundy Playing Fields and it is believed that they are the farthest flung opposition that Thornbury have ever faced - on Saturday. They were shocked at going behind within three minutes of the start. Marcus Wormwell received the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal, turned and managed to force a shot past the Binfield keeper. Binfield had most of the play but there were few chances until moments before half-time when Binfield equalized through striker Ian Davies.

If Thornbury had managed to keep the lead til half time, the outcome may have been different, but in the second half the final outcome started to look inevitable. Binfield pressed hard as Thornbury tired and it was only last ditch tackles and superb goalkeeping from Thornbury's Kurtis Parkin that kept the scores level all the way to the final whistle. Seven minutes into Extra Time, Binfield finally broke the deadlock. A penalty was awarded for a slight pull and, though Josh Howell's penalty was saved by Parkin, he was on hand to put the rebound in. In the second half of Extra Time, Binfield scored two more, through Tafari Downes an Sean Moore before Pete Fowler scored a late consolation for Thornbury.
