Thornbury Town v Tytherington Rocks
EDITOR'S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today's Hellenic League match against our local neighbours Tytherington Rocks. Since playing in the County Cup 4 years ago, we have managed to keep a 100% head-to-head record against Rocks, with them struggling at the bottom of the table. However, things seem to be on the up on the other side of the A38 with them on track for their best points tally since then. Under new management, we can't be complacent today. Thank you to everyone who came to our FA Vase game against Cribbs. Unfortunately the result didn't go our way, but the team put in a great performance to take a very strong
Cribbs side all the way to extra time. After next Saturday's away game at Bourton Rovers, we have a run of 3 home games against Cirencester, Cheltenham Saracens and a GFA Cup game against Patchway. Your support really helps the team, and hopefully we can get a string of good results in the lead up to christmas. Finally, welcome to all the children and parents from the Under 8s here today. Hopefully you enjoy the day and come to another game soon! You can read some words from their manager on page 27. Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY
It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous
winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.
The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

TYTHERINGTON ROCKS PLAYER PROFILES
Tytherington Football Club was formed in 1896 by the local Headmaster, Mr Emanuel, and others including the Rev John Bingley. Rev. Bingley stipulated that, to gain his support, the club should play in amber and black – his old college colours – Brasenose in Oxford. The club played in the Wotton-Under-Edge League and travelled to away matches by waggonette, a fourwheeled horse drawn cart, with seats along both sides. The club played at many different grounds in the early days, including Mill-Leaze Fields behind the village shop. They eventually found a permanent home at the Hardwicke Playing Fields. The club used the Swan Inn as their changing rooms until a new pavilion was erected by the Parish Council, on the playing fields in 1938. In the 1920s Tytherington FC was suspended by the Gloucestershire Football Association for non payment of a fine. The fine followed a referee being jostled into an adjoining brook after what the home side felt were some dubious decisions! No pay – no play, so Tytherington disbanded until 1932 when Tytherington Rocks FC was formed, joining the Bristol Suburban League. War disrupted the local leagues and Rocks rejoined Division 1 in 1947. The same year a youth team called the Pebbles was formed and played in the Gloucestershire Junior Boys’ League. The team spent most of the 1960s between Division 3 and Division 5. The facilities were upgraded in 1979-80, with new showers and toilet block together with electricity! The Reserves reformed in Division 7 and the first team reached Division 1 for the 198788 season. In 1987-88 saw the formation of the third team joining Division 7 and at the same time Streamside Juniors were adopted as Tytherington Rocks Juniors. A floodlit training pitch was opened in 1988. Rocks entered Premier Division 2 and by 1993 arrived in Premier Division 1. Ground improvements continued with team dugouts and perimeter fencing.
8
Thornbury Town v Tytherington Rocks
As Champions of the Bristol and Suburban Premier League in 1996-97, it was shock and disappointment when their Gloucestershire County League application was rejected. Undaunted, attention then turned to the clubhouse. A new bar, separate changing facilities, referee accommodation for both sexes and a spectator stand, all raised the profile of the club and, in 199798, this time the County League application was successful. The team survived a difficult first season but, during the next four years, enjoyed top half finishes and were GFA Challenge Trophy Finalists, League Cup Finalists and, in 2003-04, were County League Runners-up. Hellenic League football and Hellenic League status Division 1 [West] arrived in 2004-05. Season 2011-12 was to prove to be the first of three outstanding years for Tytherington Rocks. The 1st team finished 18 points clear to win the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 [West] title, followed by a 3rd place and then champions again in 2013-14, this time by 5 points. However, once again, in 2014, as in previous years, a transfer request to move to the Toolstation Western League was rejected by the FA. This refusal had a devastating effect on the club with players and team management of both 1st team and Reserves leaving en masse. History will record that several managers and committee members worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of the club during the following four seasons. The Reserves lasted for only the first of those seasons before folding. One positive feature has been the participation of the 1st team in the Buildbase FA Vase competition. August 2018 saw the prospect of a 1st team still in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 [West], a Reserve team hoping to re-enter the Bristol Suburban League at a realistic level and an U18 squad playing under floodlights in the Somerset Floodlit League.

MINNOW MAGIC
BY JON COUCH “MALDON & TIPTREE??” a friend of mine questioned when sifting through the FA Cup first round fixtures last Sunday. “Who on earth are they?” (or words to that effect). Queries such as this are actually quite common place for the Non-League Paper news team, mainly from those who don't believe in life outside the Premier League. So, on the day when Liverpool and Manchester City were locking horns in the top echelons of English football, it was perhaps fitting that the Maldon & Tiptrees of this world were enjoying their 15 minutes of fame. Now one thing I must also confess is that when asked my “expert” opinion of all things Non-League whether Maldon & Tiptree could actually go to National League champions Leyton Orient and beat them in their own back yard, I told them to keep their money in their pocket! What do I know anyway?! Once again, I had underestimated the magic of the FA Cup – but isn't that what we just love about this competition? How does little Maldon & Tiptree, of Isthmian League Division One North actually turn up at Brisbane Road wearing a Barcelona-style kit and beat a team four leagues above them in the Pyramid playing like...well, Barcelona?
goal? Jammy it was most certainly not. And it wasn't just Maldon & Tiptree who conjured up their bit of magic at the weekend. At the same time, Kingstonian were putting a thrown-together crisis club Macclesfield side to the sword at Moss Rose to earn a second round tie with AFC Fylde and ensure there will be at least one Non-League club at the third round stage. Earlier, Dover Athletic enjoyed their big day in front of the BT Sport cameras by beating League One Southend United at Crabble. It set us up nicely for a Sunday Funday where Bromley held Bristol Rovers to a 1-1 draw and Altrincham stunned their league's leaders York City to earn a mouth-watering away tie at Portsmouth, FA Cup winners of course just 12 years ago under Harry Redknapp. So, with no fewer than 15 clubs left in the competition before next week's first round replays – including another Step 4 side Chichester City, who were rewarded with an away tie at either Tranmere Rovers or Wycombe Wanderers after receiving a firstround bye – the magic of the FA Cup will no doubt return come November 30. Hopefully, by then, the Premier League ignoramuses might actually have an idea who to put their money on!
For anyone who thinks I'm exaggerating, take a look at Jorome Slew's fine solo winner in front of the ecstatic Jammers fans behind the

Sunday 3rd November - The Buildbase FA Vase 2nd Round
THORNBURY TOWN 1 BENJAMIN
CRIBBS 3 HODGSON, OWN GOAL, FELTHAM The rain that had decimated Saturday’s fixture list had stopped, a morning pitch inspection gave the match the thumbs up and Cribbs FC from the Toolstation Premier made the short journey for their first FA Vase tie of the season due to exemption from the earlier rounds. A crowd of 222 saw Thornbury take the field with no changes to the side that took them into second in the league at Malmesbury the week before. Although Cribbs looked comfortable in possession they lacked a cutting edge and their only efforts on goal, notably a direct free-kick from George Kellow, were easily dealt with by Kurtis Parkin in the home goal. Thornbury were relying on the pace of Harry Brock up front and a mid-half run saw him brought down by the Cribbs No.5, Tom Burns, who saw yellow. The card count was evened up late in the half when Brandon Benjamin was booked for a challenge on Jake Hodgson as Thornbury finished strongly - good work down the right by Marcus Wormwell but crosses coming to nothing. Nil-nil at the break – a fairly even contest with Cribbs having the majority of the possession but with very few chances created by either side. A surprise substitution at half-time saw Wormwell replaced by Jacob Farthing and five minutes into the half Thornbury had their first shot of the game when Brock fired well

over with Rhys Hodgson following suit shortly afterwards. A Cribbs substitution just before the hour and good play resulted in a corner soon after when on the hour mark a corner taken by Jordan Yeo was met by the head of Hodgson – one nil to the visitors. Thornbury reshuffled their formation on 67’ with the introduction of Toby Bennett and with Jim Brock on 79’ they looked to create an opening as time started to run out. With more players forward, on 83 minutes the ball fell to Benjamin outside the box who drilled the ball into the bottom corner off the inside of the post. There were a few half chances for Thornbury as they finished the 90 the stronger side but the whistle blew at 1-1 and it was into extra-time… Within a minute a driven cross from the right from Yeo was diverted into his own goal by Nathan Sage and as legs tired it was going to be an uphill task to even take the tie to a replay. Despite their efforts, Thornbury failed to create a meaningful shot and with a minute left and pushing forward, Cribbs’ Ethan Feltham made sure with a nice touch and finish past Parkin to make it 3-1. So, as Thornbury bow out of their debut FA Vase campaign it’s Cribbs who go forward to play the winners of the tie between Bitton & Fairford Town. Man of the Match – Brandon Benjamin (Thornbury Town) a great combative performance capped by a fantastic strike.

Saturday 9th November - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West
WELLINGTON 1 THOMAS
THORNBURY TOWN 3 H.BROCK (2), LANCASTLE In one of the few games to survive the rain, Thornbury headed north to Herefordshire to play one of the sides transferred from the Midland league and who had also started the season well. After a minute’s silence was impeccably observed in remembrance, play got under way on a near perfect surface.
It could easily have been four when Lancastle hit the post on 57 minutes but instead the deficit was reduced a couple of minutes later when Thornbury failed to clear, and Saul Thomas made room for himself and drilled the ball into the bottom corner, 1-3 with still half an hour to play.
Thornbury retained their 4-4-2 formation but with a couple of changes as Toby Bennett was declared 100% fit and Jacob Farthing came in for the sick Hodgson. They couldn’t have wished for a better start as following a Wellington corner they broke upfield and a Farthing cross was tapped home by Harry Brock in the third minute.
Thornbury continued to create chances though - penalty appeals waved away as firstly a Lancastle effort hit a hand, then Brock going over after rounding the keeper - and Franklin got on the end of a quality ball from Farthing only to see his effort go over the bar.
The corner count continued to rise but both defences stood firm and neither side looked like scoring from set pieces – the best chances coming from open play without troubling either keeper - Apperley or Parkin. Of the first half stats, including a yellow card each, it was really only the goals one that differed – 1-0 to Thornbury at the break. The second half saw a change in formation for Thornbury who moved to 3-5-2 and within five minutes it had paid off with firstly Brock going around the keeper for his second and then top scorer Craig Lancastle on the scoresheet after finishing off a strong run from Brandon Benjamin down the right.

Wellington also pressed but were restricted in the most part to knocking the ball into the box where Sage and Rawnsley were dominant. Both keepers made good saves in the closing minutes, but it was Thornbury who deservedly took all the points in an entertaining game. Hereford Pegasus also beat Malmesbury which means Thornbury now sit joint top behind those two on goal difference but with games in hand. With the midweek game at Stonehouse Town postponed, next up is the local derby at home to Tytherington Rocks on Saturday 16th November 3pm KO
TODAY'S MASCOTS UNDER 8s
Thornbury Town Under 8s are in their first season of playing matches in the Hanham Minor League, and have made a very good start. The team strengths are attacking, defending, goalkeeping, passing, dribbling, tackling and shooting - pretty much everything really. In particular they are good at scoring goals and lots of them, and in their last match had 11 different goalscorers. Not even Thornbury Town 1st team can do that!
The team has been together for over 2 years and has grown in numbers to the current list of players: Ben Paton, Oliver Norvill, Jay Dagger, Imogen Summers, Woody Williams, George Campbell, George Gingell, Finley Hopkins, Freddie HealsMay, Seb Heath, Seth Bright, Harry Mitchell, Ethan Lunny, Josh Sinclair, Louie Sayce, Dara Risdale, Tyler Hunter, Caleb Owen, Charlie Brickell and Finley Lavis. Thornbury Town Under 8s are very pleased to be matchday mascots for the 1st team today. Ian Williams Under 8s Manager
