MANAGER’S NOTES
Welcome everyone to the Mundy Playing Fields for his afternoon's Hellenic League Supplementary Cup game against Virginia Water. Once again we host a team that has travelled a considerable distance, so a special welcome to our visitors. It's always good to play against Premier Division sides as it's a good test for our players. We've beaten one Premier League side and taken one to extra time, so I think we've shown we're no pushovers against higher opposition. With so many cup games, it's important to keep track of our amazing league form. A great result against Almondsbury last weekend means we are right up there with the league leaders which is a great testament to the players in our debut season! I hope you all enjoy today's game! Andy Davies, Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

VIRGINIA WATER CLUB HISTORY Virginia Water Football Club was formed during the 1919-1920 season and during the 1930's, during the reign of King Edward VIII, gained financial support (patronage) from the crown to the sum of ÂŁ2 per annum and this was continued after his abdication by King George VI and continued through his reign. Waters were a part of the Woking & District league during this time until 1964 when they joined the Surrey Intermediate league, and then the Spartan League.
a league ruling. Although returning to the Surrey Premier League, Waters continued to be successful and won three Surrey County Premier Cups in 1995, 1996 and 1997, the latter as part of a historic treble, not only winning the County Cup, but also the League and League Cup. In 2000 the Surrey Premier League became the Surrey Senior League where Waters stayed until 2002. Waters then joined the Surrey Intermediate League (Western) playing in the Premier Division for three seasons, before relegation in 2005, but gained immediate promotion the following season. Waters remained in the Surrey Intermediate League (Western) until 2010, when they won promotion to the Surrey Elite League. Waters continued to progress and despite winning the league cup and County cup on occasion, promotion out of the Surrey Elite League proved elusive, resulting in many managerial changes during that time.
In 1969 the clubhouse at the Timbers was opened by Sir Stanley Rous CBE who was the then President of FIFA. The Timbers, on Crown Road was named after the late Harry Timbers, one of the founder members of the club. The 1970's Waters gained promotion to the Combined Counties League from the Spartan League. 1972 saw VWFC reach the first round of the FA Vase losing 3-1 to Egham Town FC and in 1979 Waters re-joined the Combined Counties League. The 1980's were disappointing with relegation in successive seasons from the Combined Counties and Surrey Premier league's seeing Waters drop into the Surrey South Eastern Combination Intermediate League. The 1990/1991 season saw a change in fortunes with Virginia Water winning the Surrey Intermediate Cup beating Coney Hall 3-0 in the final. This was followed with promotion back to the Surrey Premier League at the end of the 1991/1992 season and then back again to the Combined Counties League the following season. However, Waters only stayed in the CCL for one season due to 12
The present manager Ceri Jones, was appointed in the summer for the 2015/2016 season, and in his second full season in charge and following the appointment of Richard Banks as First Team Coach, Waters completed a historic league and league cup double and won promotion into the Uhlsport Hellenic League. The success continued with the current squad achieving the highest playing level in the clubs history by winning Division One East East gaining promotion to step 5.

BENNETT (2), LANCASTLE (2), SAGE, CLARK, BUDD who steered his shot past Powell. Five minutes later a well worked move down the left involving Lancastle and Matt Davis set up Bennett to notch Thorns’ third goal of the night.
Hellenic League Division One West Saturday 17th November 2018 Thornbury Town and Tytherington Rocks met for the third time this season with a very similar outcome. Thorns dominated the game from start to finish and almost went ahead in the 6th minute, Matt Davis not quite getting his head to a Harry Brock cross. Rocks keeper Kieran Powell then saved Toby Bennett’s free kick at the foot of the post.
Rocks were given a rare chance when Parkin miscued a clearance straight to Harrison Hardy but the substitute shot wide of the goal from the edge of the area. Thorns were pressing forward in numbers and Mark Viner’s long range effort saw Powell deflect the shot round the post for a corner, whilst a Craig Lancastle shot was saved and Marcus Wormwell’s follow-up cleared off the line by McCarthy. A rare break by the home side saw Croome one on one against Kurtis Parkin, but the Thorns’ keeper pulled off a good save. Town went 4 up in the 73rd minute when another fluent build up saw Lancastle net his second of the afternoon.
Rocks were defending resolutely, getting men behind the ball and giving Town few clearcut opportunities. Marcus Wormwell went close with a shot from the edge of the area that was inches too high, whilst just over the 30 minute mark Powell saved well from Craig Lancastle. The hosts had their first shot on target 10 minutes before the break but Mitchell Harris’ shot was comfortably saved by Kurtis Parkin. However it was Thorns that finally broke the deadlock on 39 minutes when Harry Brock and Wormwell linked up well to set up Toby Bennett to rifle the ball past Powell. Rocks responded with efforts from Austin and Detain but neither troubled Parkin.
A couple of minutes later Nathan Sage’s looping header completely outfoxed Powell for Thorns fifth. The hosts battled gamely but a rampant Thornbury side scored twice more in the last five minutes, firstly when Aaron Clark powered home a header from Luke Franklin’s corner for his first goal for the club and then in the dying seconds, Jim Brock’s shot was well saved by Powell but Asher Budd was on hand to nod home the rebound.
Town had the perfect start to the second half, doubling their lead after 3 minutes when a cross to the far post found Craig Lancastle 22

THORNBURY TOWN 2 LANCASTLE, SAGE The start of the second half saw Almonds on top and they thought they had scored as early as the third minute when they netted following a series of corners but the goal was disallowed for offside. However they forced another corner a couple of minutes later and this time they made no mistake, Greenbury’s header giving Parkin no chance.
Hellenic League Division One West Saturday 24th November 2018 After a late switch of the fixture to Almondsbury’s pitch, Thornbury Town ground out a vital win by the odd goal in three. In a closely contested game, there was little to choose between the two sides and it was probably the hosts who created the better chances. Home striker Ashley Knight was a constant menace and created a good chance early on, cutting a pass across the face of the goal that Kurtis Parkin tipped away before any Almonds player could apply a finishing touch.
At this stage the hosts were well on top and Parkin tipped Rogers effort round the post and Bisp then shot narrowly wide. Thorns weathered the storm and regained the lead just before the hour mark when Luke Franklin’s shot was deflected for a corner. Toby Bennett’s set piece was met by Nathan Sage and for the second consecutive game the centre back’s looping header gave Merry no chance.
Thorns eventually settled and Marcus Wormwell and Harry Brock both had efforts that went wide before they took the lead on the half hour. Luke Franklin’s inch perfect crossfield pass found Wormwell whose cross into the penalty area saw Craig Lancastle pushed over. The referee immediately pointed to the spot and Lancastle picked himself up to send Merry the wrong way.
Craig Lancastle had a chance to increase Thorn’s lead but his effort from Matt Davis’ free kick went over the bar. A couple of minutes later Bisp had a shot saved by Parkin. However Thorns managed to survive some further late pressure to gain three valuable points to move them up to second spot in the table.
Town continued to press forward and Wormwell’s cross caused problems for the home defence before Sheppard headed clear. The last couple of minutes of the half saw Parkin punch Baker’s free-kick clear of danger whilst Knight fired wide on the stroke of half time.
This Saturday they have a break from league action when they entertain Premier Division Virginia Water in the 1st Round of the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup. This will be the first time the clubs have ever met, the visitors making the long trip from Surrey.
