MANAGER’S NOTES
Welcome everyone to the Mundy Playing Fields. I hope you enjoy today’s game. Thank you to everyone who turned out to watch us last Saturday in our first game of the season. Even though we couldn’t provide the win, I think the boys put in a great performance against a team who I expect to be up there at the end of the season. Today we have another tough test against Cirencester Town’s Development team. It’s always tough playing against second string sides as they can be a mixture of quick energetic youngsters and players trying to make a case to get into the first team. They have made a good start to the season, and find themselves at the top of the table. Andy Davies, Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8

With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

Thornbury Town V Cirencester Town Development
CIRENCESTER TOWN DEV CLUB HISTORY Cirencester Town Football Club was formed in October 1889. The Development Team was introduced for Season 2009/10 to provide a route for talented players from the Junior Section of the Club and the Academy to make the transition to adult football and hopefully, in due course, the First Team.
After completing the 2010/2011 season in the Hellenic Reserve Division One in a respectable mid-table position, and having reached the final of the Reserve League Cup, a re-structure in the Hellenic League saw the team promoted to the Hellenic League Division One West. A new management team was appointed and the youngsters adapted well in their new league and up until the Christmas break were in contention for a top end finish. With the first team taking priority and utilising more and more players, the second half of the season was a little disjointed and the team finished a respectable mid-table side.
The decision to create this team was taken as a result of an approach to the Chairman and First Team Manager from the management of the previous season’s U16’s who had to decide whether to enter a team in the Youth section of the Midland Junior Premier League (a league they had been competing in for the previous four seasons), or risk losing players they had been coaching for between 1 and 11 years to other clubs who were offering the chance to play adult football.
As the players were even younger (average age 18) it was decided that this 1st division may be too strong so to avoid a season that could totally dishearten the younger players, the team was dropped to the reserve league. This proved to be unnecessary with a Reserve Team cup win and a third place in the league in their first season and a league win in their second season the team has been promoted back to Division One West for the 2014-2015 season.
In addition to the development of Junior Section and Academy players it was expected that there would also be scope for First Team Squad players in need of matches to improve match sharpness or returning from injury to have a game. As the emphasis of the team is to be primarily young players who had been playing junior or youth football it was decided to call the team a ‘Development Team’ rather than ‘Reserves’.
The development of the young players has greatly benefitted the first team with over 20 players making appearances and 5 playing regularly.
The Hellenic League was thought to be a suitable league for this transition and it subsequently confirmed acceptance of the team into Reserve Division 2 (West). The young team adapted well to the rigours and physicality of adult football and completed their first season as Champions of Reserve Division 2 (West). 12

LOVERIDGE, PRICE A last second consolation goal by Harry Brock on his debut proved too little, too late for Thornbury Town against Cheltenham Saracens.
Toby Bennett and Marcus Wormwell provided good width to Thornbury’s attack, but a front line lacking last season’s top goal scorer Craig Lancastle, were runners-up in the aerial battle with Cheltenham’s experienced centre backs.
Over 70 people visited the new-look facilities at the Mundy Playing Fields to see Thornbury play in their first game ever at this level.
Just after the hour mark, Adam Loveridge broke the deadlock for Cheltenham, looping the ball over the towering Thornbury goalie into the back of the net.
Thornbury’s back line led by captain Pete Fowler and Joe Guest, adjusted quickly to the increased pace and physicality of Hellenic League football. Debutant goalkeeper Kurtis Parkin, signed from Western League side Willand Rovers, dealt with an early flurry of efforts from Saracens with confidence.
Thornbury pressed for an equaliser, but 15 minutes later, a Harlie Price dummy opened up enough space in a congested penalty area for him to dispatch a shot to double Saracens’ lead.
Saracens’s defence struggled in the early stages of the first half against Parkin’s long kicks with multiple balls bouncing their way into the path of Harry Brock, but were failed to be converted.
Thornbury continued to struggle to test Saracens goalkeeper Tim Griffiths. However, fresh legs from substitutes Asher Budd and Brandon Benjamin provided some extra energy in their attack. This culminated in a close range shot by Benjamin being deflected narrowly wide by the Cheltenham stopper.
After an end-to-end first half, Cheltenham Saracens came out the stronger side hitting the woodwork early on in the second half. A refreshed and more solid back line forced Thornbury to rely on long range efforts, with Tom Webb putting a volley wide of the mark 10 minutes after the restart.
Even with a late long range curling shot by Cheltenham hitting the woodwork, Thornbury didn’t let their heads drop and were rewarded with a last minute goal. Benjamin finding Tom Webb who in turn threaded the ball 22
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc through to Harry Brock who lifted the ball over the keeper. All hopes of a comeback were thwarted when the referee blew for full-time straight from the restart.
Thornbury are back in action at the Mundy Playing Fields this Saturday 1st September against league leaders Cirencester Town Development.

GEMS
A great away result for our lads after a
pretty even match, which should give us confidence for our next match.
Thornbury Town are looking a decent side, Toby Bennet was strong on the
ball and forced a number of saves, with
Kurtis Parkin equally as useful, stopping some great attacks from Saracens. JERRY HOWSE
