PORTLAND CONNECTIONS Sunday’s match will feature a distinct Portland flair as Thorns FC features three former standouts from the University of Portland women’s soccer team in forwards Christine Sinclair (2001-02, 04-05), Danielle Foxhoven (2008-11) and midfielder Angie Kerr (2003, 2004-07). For Seattle, defender Elli Reed (2007-10) and midfielder Keelin Winters (2007-10) starred for the Pilots.
U-20 WOMENÕS WORLD CUP REUNION When Portland and Seattle match up on Sunday, eight players from the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup-winning United States squad could potentially see playing time. Seattle’s Reed, Winters, Christine Nairn and Kiersten Dallstream were members of the 2008 championship-winning U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team, alongside Thorns FC players Alex Morgan, Nikki Marshall, Nikki Washington and Becky Edwards. All except Dallstream were starters in the championship match, a 2-1 win against North Korea, in which Morgan scored and Marshall earned Woman of the Match honors.
Portland Thorns FC and Seattle Reign FC kick off a new aspect to the already fierce Pacific Northwest rivlary between the two neighboring cities. Already established on the men’s side through the Timbers and Sounders in Major League Soccer, Thorns FC and Seattle are poised to create another face to the Cascadia clash in the National Women’s Soccer League. Thorns FC are coming off a season-opening 1-1 draw against FC Kansas City on April 13 in the NWSL’s inaugural match at Shawnee Mission District Stadium in Overland Park, Kan. Forward Christine Sinclair tallied a gametying penalty kick in the 67th minute to help Portland complete a second-half comeback for the draw. Sinclair finished with a team-high two shots on goal, forward Alex Morgan registered two shots and goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc made two saves for Thorns FC in the team’s first game. Seattle earned a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Red Stars on April 14 in its season-opening match at Benedictine Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill. After grabbing a 1-0 lead through forward Christine Nairn’s diving header in front of goal in the 10th minute, Chicago equalized in the 25th minute as Lori Chalupny finished off a flicked-on header from Ella Masar. Sunday’s match marks the first of four meetings between the league’s two West Coast clubs. Portland travels to face Seattle at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash., on May 25 and Aug. 17. Following Sunday’s game, Seattle makes one additional trip to the Rose City on June 16. Portland embarks on a three-game road swing after Sunday’s home opener. The team heads to Chicago (April 27), Washington, D.C. (May 4) and back to Chicago (May 12) in consecutive weeks.

HEAD COACH CINDY PARLOW CONE A U.S. Women’s National Team veteran and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Cindy Parlow Cone leads Portland Thorns FC into their inaugural National Women’s Soccer League season in 2013. She was appointed the first head coach in the club’s history on Dec. 19, 2012. One of the all-time leading goal scorers in U.S. Women’s National Team history, Cone’s playing career included a nine-year stint with the national team, a championship in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup and gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Olympic Games. She is the youngest player ever to win both an Olympic gold medal and a World Cup title. Due to post-concussion syndrome, she retired from the national team in 2004 with 75 goals and 35 assists in 158 appearances. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Cone, 34, spent the last six years as the assistant coach for her alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2007-12. She helped guide the team to national championship-winning seasons in 2008, 2009 and 2012. In addition to coaching at UNC, Cindy also served as the director of coaching for senior girls programs (U-15 to U-18) at Triangle United Soccer Association in Chapel Hill, N.C., and has been a member of the U.S. U-14 and U-15 Girls National Team coaching staffs since 2010. She holds a USSF “A” License and was the only female coach to participate in the FIFA Futuro III course. Cone, a forward, began her international career with the U.S. Women’s National Team in 1996, scoring twice in her debut and contributing to an 8-1 win over Russia on Jan.14, 1996. She was named the U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year in 1998 and was a starting forward on the highly recognized United States squad for the 1999 Women’s World Cup, scoring two goals in the tournament. The 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team was named Sports Illustrated’s 1999 Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Cone helped the U.S. Women’s National Team to a third-place finish in the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, playing in the semifinal match against Germany held at JELD-WEN Field (then PGE Park), and a silver medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She, along with the other members of the 1996 Olympic team, was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004. Cone played in Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) for three seasons with the Atlanta Beat from 2001-03, leading the team to the postseason each season. At North Carolina, Cone recorded 68 goals and 53 assists during her collegiate career from 1995-98, and is one of 10 players in the program’s history to record 40 or more goals and assists in a career. She was a four-time All-American, won the Hermann Trophy in 1997 and 1998 as the nation’s top player, was an four-time Academic All-American, and led the Tar Heels to back-to-back national titles in 1996 and 1997.
BUCKLE DOWN DEFENSE Following the opening weekend of NWSL matches, Thorns FC rank second in the league in fewest shots on goal allowed, conceding just three against FC Kansas City in the first-ever match of the NWSL on April 13. The only other team to allow fewer shots on goal in Week 1 was the Chicago Red Stars (1 shot on goal allowed vs. Seattle). Despite being outshot 10-7 during the season-opening draw, Thorns FC finished with the advantage in shots on goal with a 4-3 edge on FC Kansas City. Through Week 1, Portland also ranks tied for third in the league in fewest shots allowed (10). Only Chicago (3) and FC Kansas City (7) conceded fewer shots, while Washington also allowed 10 shots.
FOX SOCCER TO BROADCAST NWSL GAMES The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and FOX Sports Media Group (FSMG) announced this week a one-year agreement to televise nine games during the NWSL’s inaugural season. As part of the agreement, FSMG will air six regular-season matches and all three playoff matches, which include the two semifinal games on August 24 and 25, and the championship game on August 31. Beginning July 8, FOX Soccer will televise one game per week over the final six weeks of the season, leading up to the NWSL Playoffs. The schedule will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

INTERNATIONAL Since earning her first cap with the U.S. Women’s National Team in 2005 while still in college, Kerr has gone on to make 10 appearances at the senior level. A fixture at the youth international stage, Kerr (formerly Woznuk), took a redshirt year from playing collegiately in 2004 to help lead the U.S. U-19 Women’s National Team to a third-place finish in the FIFA U-19 World Championship. Kerr earned the tournament’s Silver Ball as the second-most outstanding player and the Bronze Shoe as the third-leading scorer.

INTERNATIONAL Morgan burst onto the international scene at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, helping the USA to the championship and scoring the winning goal in the final against Korea DPR and has since helped lead the U.S. Women’s National Team to a gold medal in the London 2012 Olympics while scoring 42 goals in 65 career appearances since 2010. She was the 12th overall pick in the 2010 WPS Draft by FC Gold Pride and scored three goals in 19 games for Western New York in 2011 before moving to Sweden on a short-term deal with Hammarby IF.

One of the USA’s toughest and most experienced defenders, she had an extensive youth international career before breaking into the full team in 2006 and 2007. Since earning her first cap with the senior national team at the 2008 Algarve Cup, Buehler has won two Olympic gold medals while earning her 100th appearance on March 6 against Iceland in the 2013 Algarve Cup in Portugal. Wetzel was a four-year starter for Oregon State University from 2007-10 and earned a call up to the U.S. Women’s U-23 National Team in 2010.
