ROSTER TRANSACTIONS Thorns FC announced several additional roster moves ahead of their May 11 match against Orlando. Portland signed three additional players to its supplemental roster: forward Simone Charley, midfielder Emily Ogle and defender Madison Pogarch. Additionally, forward Hayley Raso received her green card and no longer occupies an international roster spot. Midfielders Andressinha and Angela Salem have returned to Portland and were added to the active roster, while Thorns FC waived forwards Mallory Weber and Ifeoma Onumonu. On May 24, Portland announced the signing of Marissa Everett as a national team replacement player.
VS. CHICAGO The 2019 home opener for Thorns FC marks the 19th meeting all-time in NWSL regular-season play between Portland and Chicago. Thorns FC lead the all-time series with a record of 8-1-9, including a record of 4-1-3 at Providence Park. Portland is unbeaten in its last 15 games (6-0-9) against the Red Stars. The two teams combined for eight goals in a 4-4 draw in the previous meeting on April 20 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Ill.
MATCH PREVIEW Following the longest stretch of road matches in club history, Portland Thorns FC return home to play host to the Chicago Red Stars in their 2019 home opener at Providence Park on Sunday, June 2. Portland is 6-0-0 in home openers, dating back to the club’s inagural campaign in 2013. In those six matches, Thorns FC have outscored their opponents 15-5. Sunday’s match features the two of the top goal-scoring teams in the league this season, both Chicago and Portland have tallied 13 goals.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC have led the league in attendance in each of their first six NWSL seasons. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world, averaging 16,959 fans in their sixth season in the league in 2018. On Sept. 22, 2018, Thorns FC recorded their sixth sellout in club history for the 2018 NWSL Championship game between Portland and the North Carolina Courage - the largest crowd for a U.S. women’s professional soccer championship match.
