LAST MATCH RECAP Playing their final regular-season home match, Thorns FC defeated the Western New York Flash 3-2 behind goals from forward Nadia Nadim, forward Christine Sinclair and the game-winning goal scored by Dagny Brynjarsdottir on Sept. 11. Portland opened the scoring in the 27th minute after Nadim dispatched her penalty kick into the back of the net. Thorns FC doubled the lead in the 37th minute after Sinclair took a touch inside the box and her left-footed shot struck the left post and went in. Brynjarsdottir would cap the scoring after being released into space by Tobin Heath and her right-footed shot was dispatched into the the roof of the net in the 69th minute.
PLAYOFF PICTURE With the 3-2 win over Western New York on Sept. 11, Portland clinched its first ever playoff home match in four seasons, joining the Washington Spirit as playoff hosts during the semifinals of the 2016 NWSL Playoffs. The Chicago Red Stars join Portland and Washington as the other team to clinch a playoff spot. With Sky Blue FC eliminated from playoff contention, fourth place Western New York and fifth place Seattle Reign FC will jockey for the final playoff berth.
Thorns FC (11-3-5, 38pts) enters Sunday’s match in second place in the league standings, just one point behind the first-place Washington Spirit (12-4-3, 39pts) with an opportunity to capture the 2016 NWSL Shield. Thorns FC will capture their first-ever Shield with a win against Sky Blue FC and a Washington Spirit loss or draw to the Chicago Red Stars on Sept. 24th. Another scenario in which the Thorns can clinch the Shield would be a draw against Sky Blue FC and a Washington Spirit loss to Chicago. Portland and Washington would be level on points, but Thorns FC hold the tiebreaker – head-to-head record – over the Spirit.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC have led the league in attendance in each of their first three NWSL seasons. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world, averaging 15,639 fans in their third season in the league in 2015. Portland finished their 2016 home schedule with a record of 8-1-1 at Providence Park as they played in front of their third sellout crowd in team history on Sept. 11. In 10 home matches this season, Portland set a new NWSL record for total (169,449) and average (16,945) attendance in the team’s fourth season.

HEAD COACH MARK PARSONS Mark Parsons was named Portland Thorns FC head coach on Oct. 5, 2015, coming to Portland following two full seasons as the head coach for the NWSL’s Washington Spirit. The former head coach and general manager of the Washington Spirit of the NWSL, Parsons, 29, helped guide the Spirit to consecutive league playoff appearances during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, posting a record of 18-15-11 in his two full seasons as head coach for the club. Assuming the role of head coach in July 2013 and general manger in September 2013, Parsons helped engineer one of the most successful turnarounds in league history as the Spirit went on to a 10-win season and secured a berth in the league playoffs in 2014 after winning just three games the previous season. Under Parsons’ guidance in 2015, the Spirit ranked among the top three teams in the league in goals scored (31), while forward Crystal Dunn was named league MVP. In addition, the Spirit Reserves won the W-League Championship, the U20s were national finalists and five Super Y Academy teams were also national finalists with Parsons at the helm as general manager. As the head coach of the Spirit Reserves in 2013, Parsons led the team to a third-place finish at the National Championships, while also helping launch the club’s academy programs. In 2012, Parsons helped guide the D.C. United Women U20s to the National Championship match, earning a runner-up finish. Before his arrival in the United States, Parsons was with Chelsea FC from 2004-10, working with both the girls and boys academies during his tenure, while also serving as the head coach for the Chelsea Ladies Reserves from 2008-10. During the 2008-09 campaign, the Reserves won the League Cup, the County Cup and the League Title for the first time in history. As an assistant coach with the U16 Girls Academy, Parsons helped lead the team to an academy championship in 2007. The Cranleigh, Surrey, native holds UEFA A and B Licenses, a US Youth Soccer National Youth License and US Soccer B License. Parsons resides in Beaverton with his wife Hannah and his daughter Edie (2).
ROAD FORM Thorns FC head into Sunday’s match with the second-best road record in the NWSL this season, posting a mark of 3-2-4. Portland has scored in seven of their nine road matches this season, while only surrendering multiple goals in a road match twice and registering three shutouts. Portland has been tough defensively in the final 15 minutes of matches on the road, surrendering just two goals, while scoring five goals. Midfielder Lindsey Horan has scored two of her four goals this season in road matches, including the game-winner in her last match against the Orlando Pride on June 26.
STRONG DEFENSE Portland has one of the top defenses in the NWSL this season, having conceded the joint-fewest goals in the league (18) with Washington. In addition, Thorns FC have conceded multiple goals just four times this season and have registered seven shutouts. Portland has been solid defensively this season allowing five goals in the final 15 minutes of matches, while outscoring their opponents 11-5.
NADIM IN FORM Forward Nadia Nadim is having a productive season for Thorns FC, scoring nine goals, which ranks tied for third in the NWSL this season. In addition, Nadim ranks eighth in shots (38) and ranks tied for 10th in shots on goal (17). Additionally, Thorns FC are unbeaten this season (6-0-1) when Nadim scores a goal. Nadim became the 10th player in league history to record a hat-trick against the Boston Breakers on Sept. 4 and became the first player in the history of the league to score three goals in a game for the second time after the Denmark international also netted a hat-trick for Sky Blue FC during the 2014 season.

HENRY RUNNER-UP FOR UEFA AWARD For a second consecutive season, Thorns FC midfielder Amandine Henry was one of three finalists for the UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe Award for 2015-16. Henry finished runner-up for this honor in 2015-16 and 2014-15. She finished up her season with Lyon in France winning a UEFA Champions League title and came to Portland, making her debut on June 17 against the Western NY Flash. Henry has appeared in seven games (6 starts), tallying one assist.
MILESTONES With her goal against the Western New York Flash on Sept. 11, forward Christine Sinclair recorded a point in her seventh consecutive game, which is a new team record. THORNS OVER THE INTERNATIONAL BREAK A total of eight players on the active Thorns FC roster saw action with their respective national teams during this most recent FIFA window. Midfielder Allie Long, midfielder Tobin Heath, defender Meghan Klingenberg, midfielder Lindsey Horan and defender Emily Sonnett all saw action for the U.S. Women’s National Team matches against Thailand on Sept. 15 and against the Netherlands on Sept. 18.
