Headmaster Rene M. Menard ‘88 and all of Thornton Academy’s faculty and staff wish to thank our Board of Trustees, Board Committee members, and Alumni Board for their outstanding service as loyal volunteers and supporters of our mission to prepare students for a changing world.

Student philanthropy On a sunny June day, 367 seniors took their last steps as students and their first as alumni/ae. For four years, TA has been home for the class of 2013, a place to learn and grow. They took their tests, wrote their papers, won state championships, celebrated the arts, but most of all they made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. As graduation approached, the seniors reflected on what TA has provided them. With the money that they had raised over four years, the Class of 2013 decided to leave its mark on TA by giving a significant gift to Thornton’s Annual Fund. The class gift of $9,000 will support new projects here on campus. Bobby Begin ‘13, Class President said, “We tried to think of the best way to give back to the school that has given us so much and with the school expanding so much we thought it would be a great idea to help contribute to a new classroom so the future students of TA will have the latest technology and a great school environment.” Thank you to the Class of 2013 for your generous gift to TA. We wish you all the luck and happiness in the world and look forward to watching you make your way in the world.

Unsung Hero Award

The Thornton Academy Alumni Board awarded its annual Unsung Hero Award to a dedicated individual who has given countless hours of her valuable time to make Thornton Academy a better place. Recipient Mary Ann Stickles Martin ‘78 serves as a student council advisor, class advisor and Action team advisor. She helps run Cinderella’s Closet, participates in alumni activities (including annual alumni basketball games & golf tournament) and she continues supporting Senior Sunrise even though her term has ended. Arts teacher Jennifer Merry adds, “Not many people stretch themselves as far for the health, happiness, and welfare of Thornton Academy students.”

As a town academy, Thornton Academy’s revenue stream reflects its independent or hybrid nature. Private tuition, combined with generous donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations, yield from endowment, and bank loans for capital projects, comprise 36% of our annual operating funding. Tax-based tuition revenues comprise 64%.

If you think you might have trouble answering “what is a town academy?” on a quiz show, you’re not alone. Here’s why. Perhaps best defined with the hybrid tagline -- an independent school with a public mission -- a town academy is neither a public school nor a private school as we normally know it. It is an independent school. Thornton Academy endures as one of only nine other remaining historic town academies in Maine, an educational model that predates modern public school systems. How does it work? Local towns financially contract TA to serve as their high school and pay a per-student fee set by the state of Maine. Yet the school maintains independent governance and admits tuitionpaying, residential students from across the U.S. and from 20 other countries. TA does not receive any public funds for capital improvements. Private funding enables us to fill the gap between taxbased tuition revenues and the cost of operating a quality independent school.

Classroom space in the new library will support the transition of our Freshman Focus literacy students into sophomore year. The Emery Building in the early 1900’s, being used by students as a gymnasium.

In the library classroom, the Library Director will also co-teach the literacybased Freshman Focus class, which supports at-risk students. The new library will be an integral part of this program -- from the physical setting to providing technology and materials -- to support those students’ individual needs. The library component of Thornton Academy’s 21st Century academic restoration and renovation project will cost $900,000. Sixty two percent of the project costs are attributed to restoring the infrastructure of the 100-year old Emery-Locke building and to adding an elevator to comply with ADA Accessibility requirements.

If you would like to participate in providing students with a 21st Century library, please visit www.thorntonacademy.org/give or call (207) 602-4456.

Loyalty Society Loyal donors are the cornerstone of Thornton Academy’s success, providing the means by which TA can carry out its mission of preparing students for a changing world. In recognition of this important commitment, this fall, we would like to begin to honor those committed donors in a special way. The Loyalty Society honors gift makers giving to Thornton Academy with various degrees of loyalty — from our Charter members, who are just beginning their lifelong commitment to annual giving, to our Lifetime supporters, who have given to the school for 15 or more years. To recognize loyal alumni, faculty, staff, or friends that have given to TA for two or more years, we are creating the Loyalty Society. Simply make a gift two years in a row (fiscal year runs from July 1-June 30). Charter Member: 2–4 years of consecutive giving; Milestone: 5–14 years of consecutive giving; Lifetime: 15 or more years of consecutive giving Your annual commitment ensures that Thornton Academy can move forward with facilities and course improvements, and attract outstanding scholar-teachers to raise the school’s academic profile. Membership is not based on a giving amount, instead it’s based on consecutive giving.

“Our world is multicultural and international, ever smaller as technology connects people from far-off places. Understanding other languages and cultures is a critical part of preparing students for our world today and in the future. Living amid globalization and immigration, our students should be prepared to interact with people from many cultures other than their own. I am preparing to teach AP Spanish Language and Culture for the first time this year. New developments in this course place a greater emphasis on culture; it is the cultural practices, the intangibles, that I cannot learn as well without first-hand experiences. To be the most effective Spanish teacher than I can be, I need to immerse myself in cultural experiences in more Spanish-speaking cultures beyond those that I have visited in Central America. I seek financial assistance through the Stasio Professional Development Grant in order to travel to Spain to study contemporary life and gather examples of daily life to bring back to my classroom to show as visual examples for students to see, to touch, and to use in our discussions.” (excerpt from Marie Fritzche’s application)

Thanks to The Carl Stasio Fund, language teacher Marie Fritzsche will travel to Madrid, Spain for two weeks this summer to better prepare herself for teaching Spanish courses, including Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture. The Carl Stasio Innovation in Education Professional Development Fund is a fund endowed at over $60,000, thanks to donations from more than 62 individuals or families. Yield from this endowment will generate grant awards such that Thornton Academy faculty, like Marie Fritzsche, can pursue professional development opportunities that will enrich the academic curriculum and the quality of the student learning experience.

ing cloud computing and open source technology. We’re talking IBM, CVS, and Staples. “I map out customers’ challenges and map out solutions that Red Hat can deliver. This would be very challenging if I didn’t have a technical background,” said Dubin. After receiving an annual fund mailing that featured Thornton Academy’s investment in New Media classrooms (see below), Dubin decided to donate to the project.

An annual fund campaign inspired Blake Dubin ‘96 to give generously and ensure that current students get the head start in technology that he did.

“I wouldn’t be nearly as successful as I am now or as passionate as I am about technology if Thornton didn’t help me in those early days and foster that learning. If it hadn’t been for my experience with computer labs at Thornton, then I have no doubt that I would be nowhere near where I am today. I’ve had a great opportunity to go to college. Education has always been important to me, but TA was a critical foundation. I’m giving back to make sure that the next generation has access to technology and can collaborate and innovate. That’s important to me. Staying ahead of the innovation curve means setting the bar higher than most schools. I know that’s important at Thornton.”

For the next generation If you were to look at Blake Dubin’s profile on LinkedIn, the online professional networking site, you would find “cloud computing” and “open source” as skills that Dubin’s peers and computing experts most endorse.

Davis Family Foundation supports STEM The Davis Family Foundation has awarded Thornton Academy with a generous $25,000 grant to support education in STEM (Science, Tecnology, Engineering, and Math). “This grant supports the conversion of the Room 55 lecture hall into a versatile STEM lab classroom,” said John Ritzo, Associate Head of Advancement.

Blake Dubin’s gift, along with other donations (see right), will support preparing our students for a rapidly changing world. If you would like to support Science-Technology-Education-Math education at Thornton Academy, then please visit us at www.thorntonacademy.org/give or call (207) 602-4456.

“The generosity of the Davis Family Foundation endorses Thornton Academy’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of teaching skills that prepare students to succeed in the 21st Century,” said Headmaster Rene Menard. Honors Engineering and Everyday Engineering are among the classes that will be taught there.

Dubin went from those early days of owning a rare home computer with 6 MB of RAM (to put it in perspective, cell phones today are 100x as powerful) and working in Thornton’s Mac labs to earning a degree from Rochester Institute of Technology to helping Fortune 500 companies operate more efficiently and cost effectively us-
