Natural Beauty of Our State Trips and activities will take advantage of and appreciate Maine’s world-famous rocky and sandy beaches, beautiful forestland and mountain ranges.
Our summer program will help you become more proficient in English, learn about American culture, and become familiar with the process of applying to an American college or university. Our two-week or fourweek sessions will help make you a better candidate for the school of your choice. For 200 years we have been preparing students for a changing world and we will help prepare you. At Thornton Academy, we value our small and familial residential community, in which young people and adults learn, work, and play closely together. Weekend activities balance hard work with recreation. Our activities build the international community that we value at Thornton.
English Language, American Culture and the College Process Language - The mission of the Thornton Academy English Language Learning Summer Program is to help incoming international students improve their English speaking skills and apply them to everyday American life. Students will strengthen their speaking, reading, and research analysis skills through participation in classroom projects and off-campus activities. College Preparation - Our experienced teachers will help you develop the skills and knowledge that you need to become a successful American high school and university student. In addition, we will visit some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the United States. Cultural Immersion - After in-classroom instruction, our afternoon and evening activities will introduce you to American life by exploring our hometown of Saco, the historic City of Portland, and both coastal and mountainous Maine. We will visit world-class art museums and participate in social activities with Thornton Academy students from surrounding communities.

Program Details • Saturday, July 26 : Students arrive to the campus • July 27 to August 23 : Weekdays follow schedule on prior page • Weekend excursion #1 Boston, America’s Birthplace! : We will explore early history of the United States, while visiting some of the best universities in the U.S., such as: Harvard University, MIT, and Boston University. • Weekend excursion #2 Acadia National Park : We will get in touch with the coastal beauty of Maine on this trip to one of America’s precious national parks. We will hike and explore Acadia National Park on the beautiful, rocky coast of Maine. We will also visit the University of Maine, a top-tier public university. • Weekend excursion #3 Whitewater Rafting: We will venture up to the famous Maine woods for an exciting whitewater rafting trip down the Kennebec River. We will also experience a campfire and the beauty of a starry night sky. • Sun. August 24: Departure day
Tuition For 2014, the all-inclusive cost of the Summer Program is $3,250 for a two-week session and $6,000 for a four-week double session. The price includes all activities, classes, excursions, accommodations, and airport transfers to and from the Portland International Jetport (PWM). International and domestic travel to/from Portland, Maine is not included in the price.
