The Argenta-Oreana Cub Scout Den sponsored an igloo build fundraiser on February 8 in Argenta. Aaric Kendall, ice sculptor and two-time Olympic medalist, along with some local assistants, built the ice hotel surrounded by ice sculptures. Visitors also enjoyed a slick-n-slide, which was built by the Friends of Argenta and is rumored to make a resurgence this August when we all forget about this cold winter!

Spare Time Rolls Out the Night Moves

by Joli Hohenstein

Rollers can go home with free pizza; free passes; cash from high game and high score pots; and prizes for splits (as much as $100!), colored pin, head pin, 1-2-3 pin and more. Forty lanes make for lots of potential. The Saturday night shindig starts at 10 pm (check in at 9) and regularly draws crowds as big as 175 people, so reservations are suggested. You get three games plus shoes and can pay in advance for $13 or at the door for $15. It’s not just Saturday nights when the lights go out, though… birthday parties get the glow, too. “We’ve been hosting a lot of birthday parties lately,” says Nick. “We had 10 birthday parties last Saturday alone.” You bring the cake; they’ll do the rest, with a variety of different packages available. The joint’s rockin’ on Friday nights, too, with live music from local bands regularly on the schedule. “Back in the day Spare Time was the place to go for music,” says Nick. “We want it to be that way again.” Local legends Shades of Gray (formerly Woody Clements) packed them in in February, and the March lineup ramps it up again. On the docket are Common Ground on the 7th and Third Shift on the 21st, playing 70s, 80s, 90s, country and country rock from 9:30 to 12:30 in the new and improved, recently remodeled main bar, the world-famous (well, Decatur-famous) 11th Frame Lounge.

Looking for a little something extra to get things rolling for your weekend? Spare Time Lanes has it with music and moonlight (bowling that is). Once a week Spare Time turns down the lights and turns up the fun for Moonlight Bowling, and it’s a hit not to be missed. “We get a lot of regulars,” says Nick Pallone, bar manager. “I’d say a third come back every week.” The party atmosphere, complete with disco lights and rockin’ music, brings out a crowd of regulars— singles, families and couples alike—for fun, cash and prizes. Amateurs dominate—the pros stay home, since unlike you and me, they rely on spots on the lanes that aren’t visible during Moonlight Bowling.

Many are making a night of it, says Nick, stopping in at the full-service restaurant for a meal, hitting one of the 50 games in the arcade or the video poker machines, or ordering up Noble Roman’s pizza, baked and served on-site until midnight. However you roll, you’re sure to find a hit at Spare Time Lanes.

ART SPEAK

by Jerry Johnson

Spring Theatre Season Is Rolling The Decatur theatre spring season got rolling in January with Theatre 7’s production of Desperate Affection, and in March, it really picks up momentum. Troupes will offer a wide variety of shows, including musicals and dramas performed by kids, college students and seasoned actors. The first production to roll on stage in March is Theatre 7’s Cotton Patch Gospel, March 7-9 and 14-16. This musical is the billed as the "Greatest Story Ever Retold," in which the book of Matthew is set in rural Georgia and told through bluegrass music. Written by singer/songwriter Harry Chapin, it’s a rollicking yet reverent retelling of the life of Jesus, from birth to resurrection. Cotton Patch Gospel is loaded with the characters you know, sweet four-part harmonies and a bluegrass string band complete with banjo, mandolin and fiddle. The Decatur Park District presents Bugsy Malone, Jr. March 21-23, with two full casts of performers in grades 1-12. This wacky musical is a tongue-incheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s and includes a kid’s dream come true: a classic pie fight with Silly String instead of pies! With a catchy score by the composer of The Muppet Movie, this is sure to be a terrific show. See more than 100 of Decatur’s young actors bring colorful characters like Dandy Dan, Roxi Robinson and Blousey Brown to life. The Decatur Area Arts Council offers the drama My Name Is Rachel Corrie on March 22 and 23 in the intimate setting of the third floor of the Madden Arts Center. The production features professional actress and Decatur native Jaclyn Johnson Tidwell in an emotional one-woman show. Rachel Corrie recorded her life in poetry, email reports and autobiographical journals. Though she died in 2003 during a nonviolent protest in Palestine, her writings continue to inspire people worldwide to think about how they can make positive change. Also opening that weekend is the Millikin University Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre production of Jersey Shore: The Musical. This show re-imagines the reality television phenomenon by asking the question, “As desperate as they are for fame, could the roommates manage to survive without their pop culture lifestyle?” Find out what becomes of Snooki and The

Situation in this satirical send-up, which runs March 21-23 and 28-29. For those who would like to learn how to enhance their theatre-going experience, Tim Cain, Entertainment Editor at the Herald & Review, will present “The Art of Reviewing the Arts” at the Madden Arts Center on March 12 as part of a Decatur Area Arts Council series. Does a critic do more than criticize? Is there art in reviewing a work of art? Learn how to find your reviewing and arts critic voice and how to join the cyber conversation. So many choices for theatre action roll through Decatur in March, something for every taste, and the talent will bowl you over.

Proto X Nano Quadcopter

$38.99 from the RC Shack 2104 East Locust Street, Decatur

Actual Size With all the talk about drones these days, it's hard not to be curious about the technology. I stopped by the RC Shack this month and found what I think is probably my gateway drug to many future radio-controlled vehicles. We've all seen videos of R/C model snow plows clearing driveways, right? I can get onboard with that after a winter like we've had! This tiny Quadcopter fits in your palm, is stable and easy to control, charges up via USB cable, has lights and best of all, it sounds like a bee! I'm going to have a lot of fun buzzing this guy around!

Roll Out: Derby Gets Real in DecatuR Written by Joli A. Hohenstein Photos by Alida Duff Sullivan

The wheels of death are rollin’ again right here in Decatur. The flat track roller derby season kicked off in February, and the home opener’s coming up this month. But don’t expect to see fairy wings and fishnets (especially on the guys). This sport’s hard-hitting, fast-paced, athletic and full of attitude. “It’s fast, typically in 2-minute intervals; penalties happen a lot, and there’s no ball,” says coach and player Brian Cassidy, likening the sport to Nascar for its quick pace and action-packed punch. In flat track derby, the style played around here, skaters race around a track that varies in width but is roughly 10 feet wide. Bouts are divided into two 30-minute periods, which are then divided into jams (those 2-minute intervals mentioned earlier). Each team has a Jammer and four Blockers on the track at any given time (barring penalties, of course). For every player the Jammer passes, the team gets a point. Typically teams score 4 to 30 points per jam. With no limit to the number of jams in each period, it’s not unusual to see 500-point bouts. “You’re cramming 10 people into a very small area, so it gets pretty rough,” says

Solo Jammer: Fancy Pants (David Krolikowski)

Brian, known as Impale Ale when he’s on the track with his team, the Capital City Hooligans. Most hitting is positional blocking, as skaters work to get in front of people and try to keep them from blocking. Hits typically come from the shoulder, rear end or hip. While pretty much anything goes when trying to advance the jammer, even derby has its rules. Among them: no forearms, no elbows, no blocks to the head, no clotheslines, no punches. In other words, it’s hard, it’s fast, it’s intense and it’s real. Fun to watch and even more fun to play. And the best part? You don’t have to be athletic or even know how to skate to start. In fact, though Brian had played hockey his whole life and ice skated like a pro, he hadn’t rolled an inch before joining derby. Now a coach for Decatur’s Prairieland Punishers women’s team in addition to playing with the Hooligans men’s team, he credits girlfriend and Punishers Jammer Katie Baird for getting his derby career rolling.

continued on page 16

March 2014 | 15

“She played and was so into it that she was going to men’s practices to get in some more track time, so I decided to go with her and eventually started skating myself,” he says. Katie, a Decatur team veteran and Hooligans co-coach known on the track as Bambi Bloodlust, says the intensity keeps her always thirsting for more. “It’s a really

16 | March 2014

intense sport that started for fun and is now more about athleticism,” she explains. Not nearly as theatrical as the roller derby teams of the ’70s but no less entertaining, teams like the Punishers put the focus on their moves while keeping the fun front and center. Players wear wrist guards, mouth guards, knee pads, elbow pads, team jerseys and helmets. (Katie’s has white deer antlers on it.) Some wear fishnets, some bootie shorts; some paint cuts and bruises or skulls on their faces or color their hair; one has a bunny tail on the back of her jersey. Whatever their style, you can be sure of one thing: They came to play. Jammers like Katie have to be quick and agile to get in and out of the pack; blockers stay strong to blaze them a path. “I go for the little but fierce thing; I have a Bambi Hulk mode when I put my game face on,” Katie laughs.

They’re fun; they’re fearsome; they’re athletes out to win, and they’re right here in Decatur. Bouts are family-friendly with games at the half and discounts for kids and an impish turn for date night or girls night. Catch their first home bout of the season—a March 22 double header featuring a women’s derby matchup with the Prairieland Punishers vs. Southern Illinois Roller Girls and a men’s derby faceoff with the Capital City Hooligans vs Chicago Bruise Brothers. Home bouts are at the Decatur Civic Center. On March 22 doors open at 4pm, first bout at 5pm. Main event starts at 7 pm. Advance tickets are $10 for general admission, $15 for VIP (padded seats on the floor), and kids are $5. Tickets and info at punishersderby. com. Really get down in the action with suicide seating…same price as general admission, right on the ref lane—can you handle it?

Cycling Lets Good Times & Good Health Roll

written by Troy Hayes Spin City Cycles photo by Sarah Jane

Nearly everyone knows how to ride a bicycle. From kids to senior citizens, bicycling is a great way to move and a great way to have fun and exercise at the same time. There are short treks, long journeys, fast rides, leisurely-paced trips, time trials just to see how fast you can go, and of course you can always participate in one of the dozen or so triathlons within 70 miles of Decatur. “There are just so many opportunities anymore to ride,” says Kyle May, owner of Spin City Cycles. “The extension of the bike trail, the Rodney (T. Miller triathlon); there are a lot of organized rides.” Spin City puts together rides on Saturdays. Fast groups go out for 40-50-mile rides at 7 and 7:30 am, and a moderate jaunt goes off for a 15-18 mile ride at 8 am weekly, weather permitting. “We’ll get 12 to 15 people for the fast rides and 20 or so for the moderate,” he says.

There are also opportunities to ride for a cause. The United Way puts on its Ride United event at Fairview Park in June, Tour De Paws benefits the Macon County Animal Shelter in August, and the Conservation Ride to help out Rock Springs and such goes in September. If you’re more competitively inclined, there are triathlons all summer long within an hour drive. “I think I did 10 tris last year and didn’t stay overnight once,” says Kyle. Some are using cycling to socialize. Decatur Bicycle Club (DBC) is always looking for new members and schedules rides seven days a week. The rides usually average 12-15 mph, which can be ridden with modest experience in cycling. They typically ride eight to 30 miles round trip, with the longer rides on the weekends. DBC currently has members ranging from their twenties into their seventies. And families are certainly welcome.

The DBC rides go all directions. Depending on For those wondering just how fast they can move the day, the group may go north toward Argenta on two wheels, Spin City also has time trials continued ON page 30 every other Wednesday open to anyone. March 2014 | 29

or southeast out of Mount Zion. The club, which currently serves 60-plus members, will begin organized events in April, and the season culminates in the fall with the Bob Galloway Ride in Arthur, which drew nearly 600 bicyclists last year.

“We try to mix it up and give a little different scenery each day,” says Club President Daron Drake. “There are a lot of great things to see and a lot of nice areas to ride.” The club strives to offer options for any level of rider, too. “We try to accommodate anybody,” he says. “We usually ride in two groups, one faster than the other. No one would ever be left behind.” More options come from Decatur Bicycle Shoppe, which sponsors rides each weekend in season (typically spring through fall) with rides on Saturday at 8 am starting at the north end of Rock Springs Trail and riding to Rock Springs and back. Generally there are two groups, so slower riders need not worry about holding up their group. Decatur Bicycle also offers Bike Polo on Friday nights at 6 pm and Sundays at 1:30 pm in Garmin Park. Euro Biking /////////// There is a terrific opportunity for bicyclists of nearly all fitness levels to combine their passion for cycling with their love of travel. Todd Ranney is organizing bicycling trips to Spain and to France this summer. Todd lived in Europe for six years, and he loves to cycle but couldn’t find a social trip that took care of everything from getting there to getting home, as well as handling the hassles of traveling overseas. So he decided to put it together himself. “Both countries are gorgeous, and the language barrier, which discourages some people, is not a problem since I can help with that,” he says. “There are a lot of stressors associated with foreign travel, and I think we take care of most of that.” Both tours will not only be sightseeing but a cultural lesson as well. You’ll visit cathedrals and castles in Spain and several different chateaus during the French trip. For more information, go to tcrides.com or tourgroupplanners.com.

Making the Newest Rock Stars: Rock N’ Roll Camp

Marie Jagger-Taylor, Cultural Arts Manager for the Decatur Park District, says they’re always looking for meaningful partnerships like this that truly benefit children in the Decatur and Macon Co. areas. Beginning on March 12, parents will be able to register any child between the age of 10 and 18 either online, at the Decatur Indoor Sports Center (1295 W. Wood) or at the Administrative Office (620 E. Riverside Drive). In order to keep registration fees as low as possible, several fundraising efforts have already taken place. Donations will go toward costs of running the camp, rental of instruments and paying the instructors who’ll be working with the kids. If you would like to donate, you can visit www. gofundme.com/FirstGigDecatur.

Participants will receive instruction from professional musicians, teaching them everything from playing guitar, bass, keyboards and drums to If someone would’ve told me as a kid I could go vocals, production and songwriting. It is preferred to summer camp and come out a rock star–I have that all children provide their own instruments, but a feeling my life would’ve taken a completely of course, no one wants anyone to be left behind. different path. Instruments can be provided if need be. Luckily, some local kids may soon get the chance to turn their childhood dream of being a rock star into a reality. Mikey Schoneman, who’s performed in bands around town for years, saw what was taking place at the First Gig Rock N’ Roll Camp in Danville and immediately wanted to bring it to Decatur. He’s making it possible through a partnership with the Decatur Park District.

If you’re worried about your child’s level of experience, Mikey says if he or she can play a chord, then they’ll be able to play at least three songs by the time the Saturday performance rolls around.

He says while at the Danville camp, he observed a huge transformation in the children: “They went from being shy at the start of the week, to ripping a guitar solo by the end.”

Get There: First Gig Rock N’ Roll Camp

The Park District is still in the process of determining the best location for the camp, so it will be announced at a later date. For more information about the camp, contact Mikey Schoneman at In a day and age when schools strapped for 201-5599, or for information about registration, call funding would rather shred music programs than Marie-Jagger Taylor, 433-9557. guitars, Mikey decided to take the matter of saving musical education into his own hands.

Also, he describes the camp as a great way for kids who don’t always feel that they fit in at school to find a place where they can be themselves. “For
