I Like That Old Time Rock N’ Roll: First Gig Rock N’ Roll Camp for Kids

The days of Risky Business—adolescents sliding across their living room floor in a pair of white tube socks while lip syncing Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock N’ Roll—can become reality with First Gig Rock N’ Roll Camp for Kids right here in Decatur, Illinois. Mikey Schoneman found opportunities in this area for lessons for string instruments and a big jazz following but not much instruction concerning Rock N’ Roll. He had seen what the Danville community was doing with its First Gig camp and thought it would be an awesome idea to offer Decatur youth a chance to learn how to rock out, too. What If I Can Only Play a Chord or Two? Don’t fret about your musician’s level of expertise. Mikey says potential campers don’t necessarily need prior experience. They’ll work 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday with roughly 20 professional instructors from central Illinois. When the week is over, they’ll go from playing a chord or two to knowing the rhythm of a song. 08 | June 2015

by Caitlin Loethen

What to Expect In its second year, First Gig will offer up to 30 musicians ranging in age from 10 to 17 a chance to sign up for one of four courses: bass, drums, guitar, or vocals. Campers are in for an actionpacked week filled with an array of activities and lessons, including guest speakers. Beginning on day one, instructors will assess their skills, level the playing field, and then place them in bands for the week. Bandmates will decide on their group’s name and learn three to four songs they want to cover. Later on, campers will have “Press Photos” taken of their band, design their own logo and create merchandise by learning how to press t-shirts. At the end of the week, band members will visit a recording studio to record a track for their CD, as well as put on a final live performance. The concert’s free, but donations are suggested since funds help keep First Gig great. Learning to play an instrument, either vocally or instrumentally, benefits kids on many levels. Mikey says his first-year campers’ grades have gone up, they’ve broadened their social circle, and they’ve gained self-confidence. What you get out of arts doesn’t always come in numbers—the ability to play and perform is priceless.

ART SPEAK

by Jenny Cowgill & Jerry Johnson

Decatur Area Arts Council Art Camps Going to camp in the summer has come to mean so much more than walking through the woods or sleeping in a cabin (though those activities are great, too). Summer is the perfect time for kids to explore interests that they may not have time to during the school year. Decatur Area Arts Council offers terrific opportunities for kids to get creative in art camps, workshops and other arts events. International Arts Camp lets kids spend five days learning about the art and culture of other countries, with this summer’s focus on Chile and Argentina. Campers will explore the exciting exhibit in the Anne Lloyd Gallery with a teacher and then create art projects connected to the works they’ve seen and discussed. They’ll also create several different multicultural art projects, like Chilean rain sticks and metal tooling, Argentinian armadillo sculptures, Tibetan sand mandalas, Caribbean batik fabric painting, Australian aboriginal dot painting and much more! Art Camp: Masters and Techniques is another week-long experience where kids explore famous artists and their works and try out new techniques and mediums. They’ll learn about the vibrant, exciting work of artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Miriam Shapiro and Henri Rousseau and create paintings, sculptures, oil pastels and collages after their styles. Campers will have the chance to try new ways of approaching art as they combine various materials to create multimedia bugs or flowers and create tie-dyed t-shirts using colorful Sharpie markers and other fun techniques.

Mini Matisse and Pre-K Picassos Series welcomes toddlers and preschoolers ages two to five years to a fun, hands-on environment with several creative stations set up to keep little hands busy. They’ll learn about artists and art and even enjoy story time. DAAC also has plenty of one-day workshops for all ages throughout the summer that give adults and kids the chance to explore perspective, portrait and caricature drawing, and creating animals from clay and felt. Family Art Night, Lego Pizza Party, and All American Girl Tea Party are fun weekend events that will give kids and adults the opportunity to create art, play games and have a great time together. Whether kids want to try out new art materials, learn about different cultures or just have fun creating and getting messy, the Arts Council has something for everyone. Find out more about all the DAAC summer activities at www. decaturarts.org. Let the beauty of summer inspire you and your children and get their creative juices flowing!

Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. Jenny Cowgill is Education Coordinator for the Decatur Area Arts Council. 10 | June 2015

Happy Giddy Bug House $10 Haines & Essick Co. 130 East William St., Decatur, 429.4374

When I was a kid, I LOVED catching bugs. I may not make a daily scout to collect specimens anymore, but I'm still fascinated by bugs of all kinds. Yes, even spiders, sometimes! What I remember best about showing off my prized catch of the day was how important it was to my mom that I safely release it - out of doors. This bug house is sturdy and seals up tight so you can sleep at night!

Bird Is the Word in Summer Camps By Beth DeBouck

It’s not just for the birds

– it’s for the kids, too! If you’re looking for some kid-friendly fun and educational activities this summer, Scovill Zoo and the Illinois Raptor Center have some pretty awesome options for even the littlest of nature lovers!

Director Ken Frye says the Zoo likes to change up the theme of its Family Camp Outs each summer to keep it interesting for repeat visitors, and this year, the theme is Birds, Birds, Birds! June 26 from 6 pm to 9 am. “It’s challenging because we have kids from ages two and three years old to adult,” says Ken. “So we’re trying to find things that are interesting for kids and adults alike. We’ll be bringing some birds out for people to see. They’ll get a close-up look at the penguins.”

14 | June 2015

Families bring sleeping bags and pitch their tents inside the Zoo. In the morning, everyone enjoys a light breakfast. Other activities include dinner around the fire, a train ride and an evening tour that allows you to see what those crazy animals do in the late hours (zoo critters, not the kids!).

The Brancher Camp is June 8-12 for kids ages 5-10. Children are introduced to all kinds of animals – everything from insects to owls. They’ll learn about nature through a guided hike along the Sangamon River floodplains and walks through wetland trails located near the IRC. There’s also a Beginning Birders Camp (June 15-19, ages 5-10) and a Youth Raptor Camp (June 22-26, ages 11-15). Beginning Birders covers topics about local birds and bird watching and will be led by Millikin University assistant professor of biology Dr. Travis Wilcoxen. He’ll instruct campers on setting up mist nests and banding birds.

For older kids, the Youth Raptor Camp focuses on different families of birds of prey. Kids will get hands-on experiences handling hawks, falcons and owls and will get up close and personal with eagles. On the last day, participants give a presentation to family and friends on what they’ve learned. The cost for each camp is $150 and includes a t-shirt, materials and lunch. “The Illinois Raptor Center believes that learning by experience is the best way to learn,” says Jane. “Our camps are one of a kind as we can offer hands-on experiences with live birds and birds of prey.” With the help of some feathered friends, there’s no doubt fun will take flight this summer in Decatur!

Girl Power in Bloom By Heather Meadows

Rock wall climbing, STEM lab, a teaching kitchen and more…that’s what Girl Scout Camps are made of! We’re talking CampTastic, a five-week camp, each with a different theme, plus several one-day camps and two field trips. Camp Director Stacy Marksberry is excited about this year’s events and their potential to impact girls’ lives. “Camp is a positive place. Girls come to camp and feel safe, learn self-respect and practice teamwork,” she says. “We encourage them to make new friends and try new things. This experience builds confidence. Our activities require critical thinking and reinforce positive values.” Stacey wants all girls to be able to experience these camps, which is why the financial aid opportunities that are offered are so important. Campers do not have to be in a Girl Scout troop to attend camp. CampTastic, the day camps and field trips are open to every girl in 1st-5th grade, regardless of Girl Scout affiliation. continued ON PAGE 30

So parents are able to drop off any time after 7:30 am and need to have campers picked up by 5:30 pm. The fee for this camp, including the before and after care, is $110 per week, per girl, and financial aid is available. Lunch, a snack and a camp t-shirt are provided.

A Millikin University music professor will attend this camp, and girls will explore how music is made, get their hands on different instruments and listen and discuss styles of music from all over the world. THRIVE Q&A

Keith Worland

Photo: Sarah Jane

Summertime’s fun time, and camps are just the start! So we asked veteran camper and fun-haver Keith Worland, Youth and Family Director and head of Camp Sokkia for the Decatur Family YMCA, for his best tips for finding fun all around Macon County. Favorite summertime activity Throughout the summer you’ll see my family and me running all over Decatur. We’ll be exploring Rock Springs, playing at a local park or running around Scovill Zoo. I’m amazed at how much Decatur has to offer a family.

Favorite family outing My kids love the Children’s Museum. It’s the perfect place for them to run and play on days that it’s too hot or cold to be outside. I can only guess how many hours of my life been have spent playing cashier for my little girl in the Museum’s pretend grocery store.

Most unexpected thing to do in Decatur Recently, my family discovered Geocaching. I’ve known about this activity for a few years, but my family has just recently tried it and it is so much fun! Geocaching is like a family treasure hunt using the GPS on your phone. 32 | June 2015

Most unexpected thing to do at Camp Sokkia A lot of the time, campers don’t even know they are learning, but they are. On top of the swim lessons weekly for the campers, we also offer opportunities for campers to learn new skills and try new things. One of my favorite areas of camp is the garden. I love the fact that our campers get dirty planting and weeding and they get to try food straight out of the garden.

Most fun you can have at Camp Sokkia One of my favorite games is called Gaga. Players stand inside a small wood octagon pit and a ball is placed on the ground. You can hit the ball with your hands, but if the ball hits below your knees, you are out. It only lasts a couple of minutes, but it’s so much fun!

Something about Camp Sokkia that would surprise the average Decaturite I think people would be surprised how active we are at Camp Sokkia. We swim at the Y twice a week and go on a big field trip at least once a week. Our field trips include some amazing water parks, a minor league baseball game, and the State Fair. The YMCA’s goal is to send the Campers home tired, dirty and ready for more.

From seed to market, you can’t get fresher.
