ART SPEAK

Art of Fear: Sequel of Screams A sequel of screams is coming to Macon County as Heroic Age Art Center hosts its second annual Art of Fear event October 10 from 10 am to 7 pm. Featuring a Halloween-themed gallery show, panel discussion with horror film professionals, plus Halloween snacks, arts and crafts, the event promises to bring even more screams to town. Last October’s event showcased artwork from all of the artists at the Art Center, plus a special guest panel, The Art of Fear in Film, with artists who have worked in horror-themed movies or television shows.

by Eric Hector

Guests for the panel included Michelle Helmeczy, an actress who played several walkers on the AMC television series The Walking Dead; Scott Mitchell, a makeup artist who competed on the television series Face Off; and Jim Betts, the first African American head of a department at Paramount Pictures. As head of the Scenic Paint Division at Paramount, Jim worked on horror films like Adams Family Values as well as countless other non-horror movies and television programs including Forest Gump, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn and Little House on the Prairie. This year our gallery will feature another Halloween-themed Gallery Show, and we’ll also be bringing in a whole new group of special guest speakers for our Art of Fear in Film panel. (Art of Fear in Film guests to be announced. Take a look at our event web page HeroicAgeEvents. wix.com/ArtofFear and the Heroic Age Art Center Facebook page to keep up to date on our scheduled speakers.) Art of Fear Year Two will also be adding an outdoor area with various October-themed vendors showcasing holiday foods, products, and services. (If you would like to be a vendor, contact Lindsey Harrison from L and L Studios at 217-201-0593.) There will also be an area dedicated to Heroic Age Studio’s Frightful 5000 Films project. (For more information on that project, go to Frightful5000Films.com.) Start the season off with a scream at Heroic Age Art Center!

performance, this crew will wear many hats, acting as explorers, aristocrats, and palace officials with more than a few surprises mixed in. Produced by Tanya Haubner and Dreux Lewandowski, the wealth of local talent in this lineup is sure to create a memorable performance. As an extra artistic touch – elements of steampunk will be mixed in. Costume Designer Dina Fryman and Set Designer Jerry Johnson are excited to deliver a completely new look to the Theatre 7 stage. Expect Victorian-era clothing with mechanical elements added and props and set designs with plenty of steampunk flavor. Master Builder Brian Haubner will be building many of the set designs from scratch. The visuals for this show are out of this world, literally.

The Explorers Club director Jason Albright leads his cast through a blocking exercise.

Behind the Scenes Planning for Theatre 7 performances starts months in advance. Casting for the The Explorers Club started this summer, and the cast has rehearsed for six weeks prior to the opening show. Jerry Johnson invites the community to share in their talent and encourages those with flair of their own to consider a role in Decatur’s community theatre scene. If you haven’t yet made the trip

to the Big Apple for a Broadway show, we’ve got just the ticket for those who want to experience the excitement of being serenaded by professional Broadway stars without having to make any travel arrangements. You won’t have to feel Wicked about spending a fortune on a plane ticket, nor will you need to use your Rent money to pay for a hotel on 42nd Street or Avenue Q. If you don’t believe this is going to be a fun night of Broadway with 100% of proceeds going to a good cause, then does that make me The Lion King? Okay, I hear you groaning all the way to the South Pacific, so let’s skip ahead to the main event, shall we?

Known as one of the top Four Seasons’ tribute acts in the world, The Unexpected Boys is a professional touring group of Broadway stars hailing straight from New York. You can catch them locally, however, as they take the stage of the Lincoln Square Theatre on Saturday, November 7, at 7:30 pm. These four talented stars of Broadway, along with former Phantom Brian Noonan, will keep you entertained with classic songs like “Sherry,” “Let’s Hang On” and “Walk Like a Man.” Then get ready to sing along with hits from Broadway’s longest-running shows, including The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables.

THRIVE Q&A

Kate Flemming

Most requested activity you hear people want from the Museum More programming! Whether it be special events, summer camps or daily programming, our visitors frequently offer their ideas for themes and topics.

Best Halloween memory growing up My childhood neighbors, Ruby & Stacy, would buy my brother and me our own full-sized Hershey bars. They were the sweetest couple, and it was nice to feel so special each Halloween!

Favorite Trick or Treat candy Atomic Fireballs. It’s the only time of year I risk my dental health.

News flash: Halloween isn’t just for kids. We checked in with Executive Director Kate Flemming to see how everyone’s favorite kids’ haven, Children’s Museum of Illinois, is serving up Halloween hoopla to make every adult a kid again!

How long have you’ve been with the Museum and what is your role Going on four years; I started as the Museum’s Marketing & Fundraising Coordinator and became Executive Director in June.

Favorite thing to do for Halloween Now that I’m a mom, dressing up my son! He has been Batman and a bumble bee so far; this year, his costume is TBD, but I have a feeling it will be a character from one of his favorite books.

What’s on tap for Halloween at the Museum For the whole family: Halloween Hoopla, Saturday, October 24, from 10 am-8 pm. We have s’mores, crafts, treat collection, scavenger hunt with prizes and a Halloween Science Corner courtesy of Richland Community College that will include potions & concoctions that bubble, ooze and slime! For adults: Booseum from 6-9 pm on Thursday, October 22, which will include a costume contest, campfire ghost story, trick or treating throughout the Museum and cocktail creations.

Why Booseum Countless children’s museums offer adult nights, and I think ours should, too! Our new CMI Adults Only event series will engage multiple generations of adults and increase awareness about the Museum as an educational institution and cultural destination. With fun themes and activities, we hope to create a unique series of nights out for area adults. Be on the lookout for upcoming dates!

Your Booseum costume Something easy to move around in! I might go with the classic Rosie the Riveter costume.
