THRIVE

The holiday spirit thrives little better than in Svendsen’s 10,000 sq.ft. greenhouse full of home-grown poinsettias. Starting as a wholesale (production) greenhouse in 1918 and converting to a flower shop in 1946, third-generation owner Johanne Maple says they can pretty much transform them into anyone’s holiday vision. “Most every single member of the family has worked here at one time in their life, and I’ve worked here all my life,” she says. “Glitter, fancy ribbons, we can get creative to match any décor.” Every season 1,000 poinsettias stand ready to light up your life. This year’s palette includes traditional red, pink, marble, maroon, plus on-trend varieties like Monet, White Glitter, Sparkling Punch, Iced Punch and Rose. Poinsettias – from minis to trees – are just one possibility for gifts. With this issue we’ve endeavored to simplify your gifting, with a Guide to gifting Decatur. The most wonderful time of the year starts right here! Merry Christmas,

Our community definitely knows how to put the “fun” in FUNdraising, and Joni Zimmerman helps several local organizations do just so. A member of the Macon County Regional Board for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Illinois, she recently participated in the Night in the Islands event and also attends the United Way Trivia Night Series. Teams of 4 compete for prizes awarded that evening, and the grand prize of $600 cash for the best single-night scores at the end of the series are awarded. One-hundred percent of the funds raised supports our local United Way. “One of my favorite categories is Song Lyrics, because a sing-along usually breaks out amongst the crowd when the answers are revealed. What could be better than a little lighthearted competition on a Wednesday evening all while supporting our great community?” - Joni Zimmerman, Licensing & Filings Senior Analyst for ADM Crop Risk Services, and City Limitless Ambassador

SO YOU'RE GOING TO A HOLIDAY PARTY THAT'S NOT AN UGLY SWEATER PARTY? Between private parties and all the fun events lined up in Decatur this month, you're bound to need a couple more go-to looks fit for sipping wine and listening to holiday tunes. First up, we've styled a couple of cocktail holiday looks that are delightfully festive without being too corny. For this look, mix black or white with green and add a pop of red or maroon (even if just on your lips!). We picked up vintage jewelry from The Wabash Depot Antique Center to finish off our ensembles: a gold tassel necklace for Molly and a silver filigree ring for Jodi.

Florals aren't just for spring! Accessorize floral patterns with dark colors to make them work for winter months.

To keep warm in style, add fun tights to finish off your look like these with rhinestone details above.

Next, we put together formal looks we think would be perfect for New Year's Eve. Gobs of sequins and glitter are no doubt fun for a celebration look, but we're loving sleek black dresses with gold embellishments for added pizzaz. Most importantly, have fun trying out a new look outside the ugly sweater bubble. ;) If you're stuck, you can email us for advice at modcircusblog@ gmail.com! Find a dress with a bedazzled neckline, and you can forgo having to find a necklace. Use a clutch to make a statement. This one from Target was reasonably priced, but makes a big impact.

Mod Circus is where retro mod and classic modern styles mix and mingle. Jodi and Molly are two gals living in Decatur who love clothes, food, decorating, and dancing.

Check out the full blog posts and outfit details at www.modcircus.com

THRIVE Q&A

KRIS KRINGLE FAVORITE HOLIDAY STOP IN DECATUR? I love Central Park! It is very beautiful with the recent streetscaping now complete. Also that is where my condo (Santa's House) is located, so come down and see me!

BEST WAY TO STAY WARM ON THE SLEIGH? My sleigh is warmed by the beams of the moon and stars. It is very comfortable!

MOST UNIQUE GIFT REQUEST FROM A DECATURITE? I get a lot of requests for pets, but I can't take them in the sleigh. Especially llamas, their heads won't stay in my sack!

WHAT SONGS ARE ON SANTA’S PLAYLIST FOR THE SLEIGH?

Who’s more passionate about Christmas than the big man himself? We couldn’t resist the opportunity to talk to the guy with the most holiday spirit we know. We caught Santa on a break from setting up his temporary abode at Central Park in downtown Decatur to find out how he keeps the bells jingling every year!

WHAT ARE YOU GETTING THE REINDEER FROM DECATUR THIS YEAR? My reindeer get a special present... a special blend of reindeer food from Garver Feed Company in Decatur. They love those treats!

As I fly over Israel, I like to listen to O Little Town of Bethlehem. As I fly over England, I like to listen to 12 Days of Christmas. As I fly over Mexico, I like to listen to Feliz Navidad. As I fly over America, I like to listen to O Holy Night and Jingle Bells.
