Humane Home The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County hosted an open house on December 5 at their new location on North Woodford Street. The new location offers more space allowing three rooms for cats to roam freely, staged by age group. The dogs have nothing to bark about either; they have increased indoor and outdoor space!
Pets & Patriots
Pets & Patriots, an event to benefit the Macon County Animal Shelter and Operation Care Package, featured live entertainment, photographs with animals from the shelter, and an opportunity to write letters of support to those in the military.

MHS Winter Concert MacArthur High School Choirs and Orchestra hosted their Winter Concert in the newly renovated auditorium on December 14. The concert featured soloists, student conductors and musical collaborations as members of the MHS Orchestra provided accompaniment for the choirs.
Ugly Sweaters The Children's Museum of Illinois hosted an Adults Only: Ugly Sweater Party on December 3. A variety of games and challenges made for after-hours fun with a side of spiked hot cocoa, holiday treats and music.

Mt. Zion Field House & Auditorium
On December 14, Mt. Zion School District revealed its new Fieldhouse and Performing Arts Center at a Grand Opening. Locals filled the state-of-the-art auditorium for an opening ceremony followed by an inaugural band and choir concert. John Whitlock, Principal Architect, community member, and parent to two MTZ students (and self-professed music buff) had the unique opportunity to enjoy the opening with both of his children (Jackson and Delaney) and watch Jackson perform with the Jazz and Concert Bands.
Cookie Party
Millikin University faculty, staff and administration served up hundreds of cookies and countless cups of punch during the University's 82nd annual Cookie Party. Students formed lines to pile their plates high with baked treats while they enjoyed holiday music provided by Millikin ensembles.
Charlie Brown Tabernacle Baptist Church presented A Charlie Brown Christmas December 11-13. This classic tale of holiday joy featured local talent, young and old.

2016 Heart of Illinois Gymnastics Invitational “Jump off the beam, flip off the bars, follow your dreams, and reach for the stars.” -Nadia Comaneci, 1976 Olympics: 3-Time Gold Medalist in Gymnastics Aspiring Nadia Comanecis from across Illinois will exhibit their physical prowess in flexibility and strength as Decatur’s own Gym Fusion hosts the 2016 Heart of Illinois women’s gymnastics invitational. Held at the Lutheran School Association on February 6 and 7, this weekend event will feature athletes ranging in age from 5 to 18 as 15 to 25 teams are expected to compete in the four apparatuses: balance beam, floor, uneven bars and vault. This meet will also feature a Handstand Contest as well as Judges’ Choice awards. Gym Fusion’s head coach, Nicole Neal-Harris, says, “We are very well-known for our Handstand Contest. The gymnasts and coaches really look forward to this event.” Also featured: the Judges’ Choice awards, which are given to a gymnast per event. Nicole says this practice will ensure “multiple gymnasts throughout the weekend have the opportunity to win” awards such as Best Jump, a categorical award for the balance beam. Decatur’s Gym Fusion has dreams of its own for the annual Heart of Illinois women’s gymnastics invitational. In the upcoming years, Nicole says the staff hope to expand beyond Illinois borders and include gymnasts and gymnastic teams from a few more states. If you have never experienced the atmospheric fun found at a gymnastics meet, go check it out and support Illinois athletes. Plus, plenty of spacious bleacher seating options will be available to attendees as all will be able to witness a gymnast jump off the beam, flip off the bars, follow her dreams, and reach for the stars.

Theatre 7 Announces Unnecessary Farce The Farce awakens in Decatur beginning January 15 at Richland’s Shilling Auditorium. Unnecessary Farce, a hilarious, side-splitting comedy with some slapstick scenes, will run over two weekends, January 15 to 17 and January 22 to 24. The story takes place on a stage set of two motel rooms, where two inept police officers - helped by an accountant who seems to have trouble keeping track of her clothes - orchestrate an undercover sting operation to find proof that the town's mayor has embezzled millions. Things start to get really complicated when a Scottish hit man shows up to keep the town's darker secrets secret. The cast is composed of talented Theatre 7 veterans and a couple of newcomers, all of whom are Decatur area natives. The show is a showcase of homegrown local talent, directed by Andrew Curry, supported by assistant director Kathy Zientara, and produced by Cheryl Laskowski. New Moon Café I always get a little excited when a new restaurant opens in the area. I wish I could tell you the Food Dude plays it cool about these types of things, but, alas, I am pulled in – kind of like with gravity and… the moon? I just wanted to get that space reference in there. The New Moon Café is on the east end of town, a few blocks from Whit’s End and located at the former Golden Glaze Donuts on East William Street (directions seem important as I almost drove by it). I brought along Ma and Pa Dude so we could try a few options. The menu includes breakfast (biscuits and gravy!), lunch and dinner. We went during the lunch hour, and there were already several occupied tables. The space isn’t anything fancy, but you’ll find some rather unique items on the menu. First, I indulged myself with the $2 margarita special, and then I was torn between the BBQ pulled pork mac ‘n’ cheese panini and a roast beef sub. (BTW, Pa Dude ordered the New Moon Cuban and a cup of chicken pot pie soup; Ma Dude kept it simple with a BLT + avocado). My roast beef sub came on some super soft and wonderful French bread with cilantro and house-made tomatillo sauce (you can order a half- or full-size). Here’s where I would suggest asking your server for spicy red onions. They generously let us sample them, and I ended up adding nearly the entire bowl to the sandwich because they were so flavorful.
I have found that during the winter months, when my stomach starts to grumble, I’m more often in the mood for soup and a sandwich. If you’re the same, you may find yourself happy that the New Moon Café is around. The staff was so incredibly friendly on our first visit, and, for me, that can be as big a part of the eating experience as the food, so kudos to them. Menu options are also incredibly reasonable in price. What’s nice, too, is that they seem happy to take suggestions on the menu. After all, they only opened their doors in November. Dixieland is just one of the dozen or so known styles of jazz the Central Illinois Jazz Festival (CIJF) has been bringing to the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel for more than 40 years. For fourteen of those years, Maggie Parker-Brown has been a big part of the process. “This is the 41st year,” Maggie says. “The CIJF is one of only four jazz festivals that have lasted so long, and it’s known all over the country.” This year’s lineup proves the reach of the festival. In addition to local and Midwestern bands, musicians will be coming from both coasts for the three days of the festival. Multiple venues will run at the same time, so attendees will be able to sample several performances even if they are able to attend only one day. Also, all the venues are on one floor in one building, making attendance easier for those who have problems walking. The festival started when a group of people from Central Illinois met in the dining room of the Holiday Inn after the 1975 Arcola Broomcorn Festival, where they’d enjoyed a jazz concert. Dieter Schultz, Holiday Inn manager and jazz fan,
declared he’d like to try a large-scale three-day jazz festival at the hotel. With the assistance of the Decatur Area Arts Council, the first Central Illinois Jazz Festival was presented the next year. Response was far better than expected, and the festival continued until 2001, when the hotel was purchased by John Cardwell and Jim Randall. They understood the contribution the CIJF made to the community but had no idea how to run a jazz festival. Continued on page 16

In the meantime, the event had inspired the organization of the Juvae Jazz Society. The late Bob Fallstrom, a well-known reporter for the Decatur Herald & Review, became the first president. He was followed by Maggie. The society had been sponsoring concerts and had sponsored a band at the festival several years. The society had only 55 members and little money at the time, but, says Maggie, they were dedicated. Maggie was named director because she had experience presenting jazz with her late husband, Jim Parker, in Decatur and earlier at their Tack Room Club in Illiopolis. The festival has continued to grow and evolve since. “We try to keep the ticket price as low as possible,” she says. Single-session tickets are $35 (the Patron Package for all sessions is $145). Special prices for reserved rooms at the hotel are available.
A few programs are free and open to the public. At 10 am Saturday, the award-winning Millikin University Jazz Lab Bands I and II play in Fountain Hall. Sunday will begin there with a Jazz Gospel Service at 9:30 am. The Central Illinois Jazz Festival, Feb. 5, 6 and 7 at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel, offers something for everyone who loves jazz or might enjoy a day or three of music and dancing. “Dancing is encouraged,” says Maggie, noting that swing dance sets will be offered both Friday and Saturday. We’ll bet you’ve never seen a show like this one before. The Decatur Civic Center is proud to present Earl David Reed’s “The Secret to My Unsuccess Tour” with Special Guest The Redneck Magician. A hilariously funny evening awaits as two worldrenowned professionals bring their talents to the Decatur stage on Friday, January 22, at 8 pm. For most of us growing up in Central Illinois, “you might be a redneck if…” one-liners were a staple of our joke arsenal from an early age. Many of us had more than a few memorized, as well as

a few that rang a little close to home with the behavior of some of our relatives. That same country humor can be found in this lineup, with Earl David Reed being a veteran of Bill Engvall’s All Stars of Country Comedy Tour. The evening kicks off with marvels of modern redneck magic as James Michael, The Redneck Magician, performs wondrous, magical feats such as disappearing beer stunts, knife throwing and one-of-a-kind card tricks that will leave you in tears. Dubbed the “Bad Boy of Magic,” James creates a high-energy show with his rowdy
and incredibly entertaining personality. With a YouTube channel boasting nearly 5,000 followers, you can get a taste of Michael’s style, particularly with his skits on anger management, speed dating and of course… beer. Jump on the redneck magician fan bandwagon here and like his “badboyofmagic” channel on YouTube. The featured entertainment for the evening is Earl David Reed, a 15-year veteran of standup comedy. opening act for big name artists like Whitney Houston, Smokey Robinson, Tim Allen and Jeff Foxworthy. Most recently, Reed has been a staple of morning radio comedy on the Nipsey, Earl and Jen Shade Show. His return to the stage is Reed’s second-coming of his stand-up comedy career. Aside from his obvious humor, Reed’s real talent is working the crowd, and you can expect some great audience interaction during his show. He’s known for his on-the-fly jokes based off of members in the audience, and fans recommend wearing something outrageous to catch his eye because odds are he’ll notice that and work
it into his set. His current show is based on his budding reality-based TV project titled The Secret of My Unsuccess. His act features funny moments that have occurred throughout his life. According to Cydney Boyd, Marketing Manager at the Decatur Civic Center, the team is excited to bring such a high-quality comedy act to Decatur. “We were immediately fans from the beginning when we checked out the YouTube pages for both stars,” she says. “We know this show and the humor will be a good fit for the Decatur area,” she said.

Here at THRIVE we’re constantly talking about how much is going on in Macon County – but sometimes what you can’t see is as fascinating as what you can. What better person to take us behind the veil than local ghost hunter Adam White? Adam also happens to be a board member for the Lincoln Square Theatre, one of the area’s most haunted establishments and site of the upcoming Dead of Winter Festival.

When not hanging out with my two lovely daughters, you’ll find me working on something at the Lincoln Square Theatre.
BEST PART ABOUT THE LINCOLN THEATRE (OTHER THAN THE HAUNTINGS)
The history is by far one of the best things at this theatre. Some of the biggest names in entertainment performed on this stage, such acts as Al Jolson, B.B King, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore, Bob Hope, just to name a few. To be part of this history is extremely amazing, and I'm very thankful for it.

MOST UNEXPECTED PLACE YOU’VE FOUND A GHOST IN MACON COUNTY
I can't say the name of the restaurant, but we had some very interesting things take place at this location. Another case that comes to mind was an old farm house outside of town. The owner of the house wanted us to check it out. The house was boarded up, but with permission we had the chance to spend part of the night investigating. From hearing people walking around upstairs to hearing what sounded like a baby crying, it made for a very interesting night.

The size of this theatre. From outside it looks small, but with over 1,300 seats, we’re far from being small.
