THRIVE

"Out and about is where I always want to be. There isn't an ounce of introvert in my being. Running from event to event naturally fits into my hectic life. With three children and an active husband, we are anything but bored. The good news is, attending local events, even if it is just to snap photos, has grown my family's life experience. We have a bigger circle. We are smarter, healthier and more in love with our community." Robin Walters, THRIVE's Out & About compiler, grew up in Harristown. She has lived in Denver and St Louis but found home again after a cancer diagnosis in 2001. While the cancer is in remission, Decatur has grown into a permanent home for this gypsy wanna-be. "A new lease on life has me wanting the most out of every day," says Robin. "I encourage everyone I meet to take advantage of all our area has to offer. Grab a few friends and try something new! We've got the schedule..."

SPOTLIGHT

by Caitlin Loethen

At Mt. Zion’s Majestic Hall, bingo means business—not to mention bucks. Open seven days a week, Majestic Hall offers games of bingo beginning at 5:40 pm for its super-early session and then regular games starting at 6:30 pm. If you are a novice player and are unsure how to begin, the staff suggests bringing in $30 in order to participate actively in the festivities. The daily sessions are filled with a variety of games and other activities, such as the crowd favorite: pull tabs and speedball. Just a word of advice—make sure you aren’t up and talking during this game of precision and accuracy because absolute silence is a must—zero distractions. If you’re hungry, plan on bringing $40 with you in order to satisfy your stomach’s cravings. However, $3 alone will buy you a bingo pack and gain you access to a bevy of cash prizes being offered. Keep in mind that total cash prizes differ with every session. Matinee times are also available on Saturday and Sundays, with doors opening at 11:15 am and games beginning as early as 12:10 pm. Computerized games of digital bingo are available on the weekends, too. This option may be great for those players who feel concerned they may not dab their bingo call-outs in time. Just be sure to watch the screen and submit your game if you are a winner. One event coming up at the Majestic Hall on Saturday, February 13, is a special “Midnight Bingo” with games commencing at 11:30 pm. The total payout for this evening/early morning session of raffles and bingo is $7,800! Regularly, each bingo session is conducted by a charitable group, which allows them to accrue funds for their organization, and at Midnight Bingo, the proceeds will benefit Decatur Breakfast Sertoma. Come on out any day of the week to see if you’ll be a “winner in the dungeon” at Majestic Hall! 08 | February 2016

There are many more delectable flavors where that came from in the truffle case at Del's Popcorn Express! Grab a pre-selected boxed set, or individually pick out your favorite flavors. ART SPEAK

by Lindsey Harrison

Love Is in the Air at Heroic Age Art Center From 10 am until 2 pm, you can create a special custom heart ornament for $5 at Next of Kiln. The gallery walls will be lined with love-inspired art, and you can even take a picture with your special someone in our Kissing Booth. Make a date of it, and come to Heroic Age Art Center for "The Art of Love" Saturday, February 13, from 10 am to 5 pm.

Love has been the biggest inspiration for art for as long as art has been documented. Claude Monet's favorite subject to capture was his wife, and Cupid can be found in countless works of Greek-inspired art. You can even find Robert Indiana's huge sculpture of the word LOVE on the front lawn of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. But you don’t have to go that far – you can bring out your inner artist at Heroic Age Art Center's "The Art of Love” on Saturday, February 13. Take a class, make a Valentine and more: The newest addition to the Art Center, The Little Salon, will be doing Valentine up-dos all day. From 1 until 3 pm, Paint Junkies will have a "Love Canvas" Workshop ($40 per person or $60 per couple). L & L Studio will be hosting a Poetry Reading with featured local poet Catherine Bryles and others from 3 to 4:30 pm. CenterEarth Studio will be giving away a Love Bowl and a free pottery lesson.

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Whit’s End – the beginning of great home-style eats Ever feel frustrated when deciding where to meet up with friends? Like you’re at your whit’s end trying to choose a place to eat? Well, I’m about to tell you about the locals’ best-kept secret. While cruising down East William Street (Route 105) in Decatur, it would be easy to drive past Whit’s End and not even know what you’re missing out on. It’s a small brick building that could easily go unnoticed if you aren’t paying much attention. What I noticed was the number of cars in the parking lot! Established in 1982, the local bar and grill serves up lunch specials 11 am to 3 pm daily, and the menu is full of delicious home-style food. Fans rave about their homemade pizzas and their famous gizzards and livers. While reviewing all the options, you’ll notice there is no shortage of bacon or “breaded” on the menu. Definitely not a limited selection of options, either! I deliberated for quite some time on what to try before deciding on the “Grand Champion Wings!” doused in honey BBQ sauce. If you like a little more spice in your life, they have zestier

sauces, and don’t forget to order some of their hot cheese balls. From seafood to salads and wings to walleye, they have something for everyone! Whether you’re stopping in for lunch or meeting up with friends for a drink after work, it can be the perfect hangout spot. When you walk into Whit’s End, you’ll notice the ‘seat yourself’ style and laid back, friendly atmosphere. Maybe a cold beer and the big game are calling your name? They have a full bar and multiple TVs, so you won’t miss a minute of the action. They also offer room rentals for your larger party needs. With seating up to 60 people (depending on location), Whit’s End can cater your next birthday party, corporate lunch, or anniversary dinner for an enjoyable dining experience. Now with locations in Decatur, Macon and Taylorville, everyone in central Illinois can have a chance to try out Whit’s End!

Graphic novels are for adults, too, and the Decatur Public Library is out to prove it to you!

Led by Millikin Professor

Jeff Kirchoff, the Graphic Novel Book Club highlights the eclectic nature of this genre. Coordinated by Adult Division Head Librarian Alissa Henkel, the club was born out of her passion for librarianship and art and Professor Kirchoff’s desire to have a lively discussion about a topic he loves.

The Decatur Public Library Graphic Novel Club: Art, Lively Discussion and Amazing Literature! Written by Kelli Trei Photos by Stephanie Gagnon

Graphic novels are not restricted to superheroes

and this fact is demonstrated by the breadth of the selections in the club, contributed by the members themselves. All titles are available to be checked out at the DPL or requested from another nearby library. Many times the discussion continues after the meeting has ended, thanks to the engaged group of attendees.

Continued on page 16

First came comic strips, then Graphic Novel Club from page 15

The Book Club is scheduled the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm and is held in The Staley Room at the Library. There is truly something for everyone in this group, especially if you are new to sequential art. Come see what the fuss is about; you will not be disappointed!

comic books, then the graphic novel, which is a stand-alone graphic tome or a collection of comic books.

The Golden AGE (late 1930s-1950s) of comics flourished post-depression and saw the beginning of collected strips in comic book form, as well as the arrival of the American superhero. Some argue the Golden Age began precisely with the introduction of Superman in 1938.

The Silver AGE

(1950s-1970s) f o l l o w e d , introducing many famous writers, including Marvel’s Stan Lee. Also increasing was concern by parents, teachers and librarians that comics contributed to juvenile delinquency.

The Bronze AGE

(1970s-1985) comics took on more socially conscious issues like drug addiction, racism, and political corruption. The early 1970s saw the first usage of the term “graphic novel.”

The MOdern AGE (1985s-Present Day)

kept many of the elements from previous decades but allowed the graphic novel to flourish in popular and academic acceptance with promotion by libraries in the early 2000s and the official rejection of the threat of juvenile delinquency.

The nature of comics to comment

on society throughout history highlights their relevance for readers of all ages. Graphic novels flow beyond superheroes to child-friendly wordless works like Owly, memoirs that make school reading lists like Persepolis or Maus, to dark and adult zombie excitement like The Walking Dead.

BUNCO !!! Written by Heather Meadows Photo by Stephanie Gagnon

Looking to host a competitive game night with friends but unsure of what games to bust out that will leave all of your guests satisfied? How about a fun game for a couples party, or that perfect, casual game to bring to your next girls night? Look no further! BUNCO !!! is the solution.

28 | February 2016

What is BUNCO !!!? A challenging dice game generally played with about 12 people. The game is unique in that it can provide a competitive gaming experience with prizes involved or simply a casual, fun experience loved by people of just about any gender and age. One BUNCO !!! enthusiast, Donna Feriozzi, has been on her current BUNCO !!! league for about 15 years. The group gets together once a month. Sometimes hosts or hostesses pick a monthly theme. Often, members of Donna’s group contribute $2-5 for a prize for the winner. Another fun twist: donate the final money to a charity of the winner’s choice. Not a competitive person? BUNCO !!! is for you, too! Jillian Wentworth of Decatur plays on occasion with friends and family. During her BUNCO !!! gatherings, the focus is on good conversation and delicious food, with BUNCO !!! being played casually between chit-chat and sips of wine! Continued on page 30

BUNCO !!! from page 28

It’s so simple and fun! Below is a step-by-step guide to getting your BUNCO !!! on! Gaming materials: Tables and chairs, die (three per table), a bell, tally sheets and, if you’re looking for a competitive night, prizes! 1 . A typical game involves three tables: a head table, middle table and bottom (losing) table. There are usually four sets. Feel free to break between sets for food, beverages and conversation! 2 . At each table you’ll find four people. You’ll be given a new partner for each set. (Your partner will be the individual seated directly across from you.) 3 . Next, pick one person from your twoperson team to be the scorekeeper for your round. Keep track of your score by using a tally sheet. 4 . The head table controls the game by ringing a bell to start each match. 5 . Once the bell has rung, a player from each table will begin the game by attempting to roll a

“1” on the three die provided. Continue this until the set is complete (If you roll one “1” you tally one point. If two out of your three die show a “1” then tally two points and so forth.) 6 . If three of a kind is rolled (of whatever number you’re currently striving for at your table) it’s called a BUNCO !!!. A BUNCO !!! is worth 21 points! However, don’t stop there! Continue rolling and tallying points until someone at the head table rolls a BUNCO !!!. At that point, the bell is rung, and the set comes to a close. 7 . For your next set, the winning team stays at the head table. If you’re a part of the winning team, have one partner move over a chair so that you’re now partnered with a new teammate! 8 . The game is finished once all four sets of BUNCO !!! have been completed! So what are you waiting for? Let’s roll! THRIVE Q&A

JIM BARR

BEST THING TO DO DURING WINTER IN MACON COUNTY

“Hike some of the trails at Rock Springs (or one of the other Conservation Areas) right after a 2- to 3-inch snowfall. Just enough to get the trees and shrubs covered with snow. Another thing to do on a nice winter afternoon is to enjoy a good movie at the AVON Theatre.”

For singers like the Decatur Chordsmen, all the world really is a stage. They’re looking at Macon County from a different view, and we wondered how they see our lovely county – and what they sing about it. Who better to ask than Jim Barr, longtime member and lead?

FAVORITE VENUE TO SING IN MACON COUNTY

“My favorite place to sing would be Kirkland (we did several shows there in the 70's) as well as many local churches. When we sing gospel songs or traditional religious songs, the church setting always adds a little something special to the music.”

BEST PART ABOUT THE DECATUR CHORDSMEN

“The friendships that we share with each other and our families.”

FAVORITE SONG TO SING – ANY WINTER FAVORITES?

“Way too many to list but a few would be Gospel Medley, Silent Night, Steamin Down the River, Battle Hymn of the Republic. My favorite winter songs besides Silent Night would also include Walking in a Winter Wonderland, White Christmas and Christmas Chopsticks.”

ONE THING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE DECATUR CHORDSMEN

“You don't have to be a trained singer to join us—just enjoy singing.”

SOMETHING ABOUT THE DECATUR CHORDSMEN THAT WOULD SURPRISE US

“We just celebrated our 70th anniversary on July 25, 2015. We are one of the oldest chapters in our District.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE DECATUR CHORDSMEN

“The most important thing that is coming up for us is our Singing Valentines. This is an annual fundraiser for us. It involves a quartet from the group singing two or three love songs to that someone special. It also could include a rose and or a box of candy, depending upon what you would want. This service will be available the weekend of February 12 to 14.” To schedule one, call Bob Hedgecock at 423-5611. Editor’s note: The Decatur Chordsmen are always up for gigs! The best way to get more information is to contact Jim at 692-2788 or Director Gerry Conner at 413-7741. Adds Jim, “We also like to sing for church services in the summer months when their choirs may be taking a break. We do not charge for this and enjoy doing it very much.”
