# BEHIND THE THRIVE It may be difficult to catch sight of Thrive Owner/Publisher Kat Smalley up to anything but running around town doing Thrive stuff, but it's not impossible. She has a new addiction, and it's called pickleball! If you haven't heard of pickleball before, you aren't alone - but there are over 2.5 million players out there ahead of the curve playing the fast-paced paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and Kat's favorite, ping-pong. You'll find Kat on the courts at the YMCA during at least two of the five regular play times each week and out on the pickleball courts at Cresthaven Park whenever weather permits. Read: any day over 50â °.

EARN REWARDS.

It is unlikely any sport will outshine her fastpitch softball days, which included a seat on the Millikin softball team and competitive play with the Central Illinois Girls Softball (CIGS) Misfits fastpitch travel team until her late 20's, but it seems pickleball comes mighty close. Kat gets her weekly pickleball fix here in town but loves traveling to regional tournaments with hopes to represent Decatur in a National Tournament one day soon.

To catch a game, keep your ears open for that unmistakable sound of the ball popping off Kat's paddle – and watch out for her backhand!

SPOTLIGHT

A Day Full of Whimsy Do you have Disney princess fans in your home? What about Cinderella enthusiasts? Well, I have an event of which you should take note! Put on your most beautiful gowns and dapper suits; it’s time for a Happily Ever Afternoon hosted by Kirkland Fine Arts Center. What does such an afternoon have in store? Come to the Kirkland Fine Arts Center on March 12 at 12 pm and enjoy an afternoon of hair and makeup styling, fun and exciting games, face painting, refreshments, a photo booth, crafts and a meet and greet with Cinderella herself! Wishing for more whimsy? Stick around and watch the incredible Minnesota Ballet eloquently portray the fairy tale story of Cinderella through song and dance. It’s difficult to imagine an event more awe-inspiring than watching a group of dedicated performers take the stage with hopes of bringing an audience with them on a journey to another time, place and twist to an age-old story: Cinderella. Few experiences are as rich as the viewing of live performing arts. On Saturday, March 12, two showings of the ballet are available. The first, a matinee show, will start at 2 pm, following the Cinderella afternoon, and the second, an evening show, will begin at 7 pm. Kirkland’s director, Jan Traughber, relays great enthusiasm for the event and is excited to bring such a beautiful art form as ballet to the city of Decatur. She hopes attendees will leave the ballet with a new or renewed excitement for live performing arts. Jan says it has been several years since Kirkland has hosted a ballet, and she and 08 | March 2016

her team are lucky enough to be able to present a ballet performed by such a talented group as the Minnesota Ballet to Decatur. She hopes people will take the opportunity to bring young children to this event, as they’ll love the colors, movement and the set. The Minnesota Ballet travels throughout the country performing its rendition of the Cinderella story. Unique to their production is the setting of the story, which for their purposes, takes place in renaissance Tuscany, leaving the audience in a state of wonder as they enjoy the beautiful scenery that the elaborate sets and costumes provide. Another exciting change is in the storyline itself. Gone is the evil stepmother. In this ballet, she’s sweet and kind. Children are encouraged to dress up for the event in their best prince or princess costumes. Children of any school age, from a preschooler to a senior in high school, can purchase tickets for the ballet for just $5. The ballet is encouraged for all ages! Whether young or old, audience members will take away a truly amazing viewing experience when they attend the whimsical Cinderella ballet. Prepare your pumpkin carriage for arrival to the Happily Ever Afternoon and the Minnesota Ballet’s rendition of the magical Cinderella story. We know your children will get swept up in the magic of the event. Tickets for both enchanting events may be purchased through the Kirkland Fine Arts Center’s website (http://www.millikin. edu/kirkland/events) or by phone at 424-6318. ART SPEAK

by Jamie Rutherford

Celebrating Arts-in-Education While schools across the country are often cutting back on art, here in Decatur we’re celebrating the visual arts in schools! Arts-in-Education has 2014 Best of Show been providing teachers and students with creative incentives for over 20 Draco SubTerram by years. Art is not simply a hobby, a pastime or a luxury. The visual arts are Whitney Meltz. an important part of our culture, history and education system. Participating in the arts provides students with so much: increased motor skills, hand-eye coordination, decisionmaking skills, confidence, cultural awareness and independent thinking. Let’s not forget what a great outlet art is for self-expression and anxiety, and who doesn’t need that? Even science (yes, there have been studies) shows that being in the arts is good for the brain. Being involved in art helps children learn to focus and helps develop cognitive thinking, so skills in other areas like math and reading improve among children who are active in the arts. There are so many benefits to the visual arts. We live in a visual world, and understanding the visual language of art can only strengthen a person’s ability to navigate that world. This is why programs like Arts-in-Education continue to be among Gallery 510’s top priorities. Area junior and senior high school students from a 50-mile radius have been invited to participate and will display art in a variety of mediums and styles. If your school would like to be included in the future, please contact the Gallery and let us know. GET THERE Photo: Whitney Meltz We would like to invite the public to visit and Arts-in-Education see the work of these talented students. The Exhibit Reception skills they have been developing are skills they can continue all Friday, April 1 their lives and that can even reach beyond the arts. 5:00 pm The exhibit takes place at Madden Arts Center in the third floor Madden Arts Center gallery from March 31 to April 7. The reception is April 1 at 5 pm. 3rd Floor Ribbons are awarded. Join us and cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award! For more information, please contact Gallery 510 at 422-1509 or e-mail info@gallery510.org.

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Draft Some Great Food Football season may be well over (Hello, March Madness!), but there’s always room for another sports bar. While you’re out shopping in Forsyth, you can stop by The Draft (located between Best Buy and Comfort Inn & Suites) for some good ol’ fried appetizers, a beer and a burger. They also have B.L.T.s, clubs, wraps, pork tenderloins, grilled mahi-mahi on rye or breaded catfish. Entrees, too, like pasta, stir fry or ribs. Wings are definitely a must, as well. I’d heard about The Draft opening in December and had passed by on several occasions, always wanting to stop in for a pint. Recently I went for lunch, accompanied by a work friend. (Food Dude can’t live on food alone – he has other jobs to support his eating habits!) It’s difficult not to be drawn to the burgers, since they have names like “Slap Shot,” “Fumble” and “Bogey.” You get a half-pound of meat, but it’s the toppings that decide the kind of burger person you are. Like egg on your burger? Try the Rebound. Peppers plus avocado? Try the Three Pointer. I, being the adventurous foodie, decided on the Overtime, which comes with – get this – bacon, jalapenos, cheese and…peanut butter. Don’t turn up your nose yet. It was actually pretty dang good, and if you’re worried about a

giant PBJ slathering of peanut butter, it’s hardly even a smear. The jalapenos gave it that special kick, so it was a good thing I had my 16 oz. Stella by my side. Speaking of beer, there are lots to choose on tap, and then there’s a cooler behind the bar for those who’d like a wider selection of craft options. I’m intrigued that The Draft doesn’t have a social media presence, but maybe they’re putting that time into good food and service? Staff was friendly and obviously experienced, as we never had to ask for water, refills or anything extra. The space is open concept – bar tops, bar seating, and low-top tables – and the atmosphere is chill and relaxed with plenty of TVs for those coming in to watch a game. The Draft is open every day from 11 am to late. Kitchen closes at 10 pm on weekdays and 11 pm on weekends.

GET THERE: The Draft 5180 N Hickory Point Frontage Rd., Decatur 791-5364

Got Spring Fever?

Catch Some Fun with Big Blue Baseball & Softball Written by Katie O’Riley Photos by Kevin Krows

The smell of fresh-cut grass and fresh air, the taste of a cold drink and a hot dog, the sound of a bat cracking and fans cheering--nothing better than a day at the ballpark. And you can experience it close to home when Millikin’s baseball and softball teams hit the field for their seasons this spring!

14 | March 2016

LAST SEASON, Millikin’s baseball team beat all but one of their

conference rivals at least once, to finish their 2015 season with 17 wins—the most for Millikin since 2006. Head baseball coach Brandon More on page 16

More Big Blue Baseball & Softball from page 15 Townsend, entering his third season at Millikin, expects nothing less for 2016, all toward becoming a “conference caliber team” and remaining in the top ranks for years to come. Last year’s season delivered exciting highlights like a walk-off win against Illinois Wesleyan when Millikin was down in the ninth inning and came back to win the game. It was the first time they had beaten Illinois Wesleyan at Millikin in 29 straight games. Coach Townsend called the team “a group of guys that really wanted to fight back.” He’s expecting some tough matchups in the conference this year and looking to build off what they did last year.

Coach emphasizes one person’s role isn’t more or less important than another. More important: celebrating the team’s accomplishments as a whole. In 2011, Millikin won the overall conference, and the team and coaches hope they can do it again in 2016. When fans come to a Millikin softball game this season, they can expect a competitive atmosphere and a fun environment. However you do it, pick your poison; get out and show your Big Blue spirit!

SOFTBALL Catch some more round ball on the south side of town with first-year Millikin softball coach Katie Tenboer at the helm. Having played college ball at Central College in Iowa, she also brings experience coaching at both the collegiate and youth softball levels. Excited for her first year coaching at Millikin, Katie and assistant coach, Whitney Sowers, who also joined Millikin’s coaching staff last fall, set the team’s lofty goal this season as reaching the national championship. With that in mind, they’re striving to win the conference tournament, which takes place in early May. Top competitors for Millikin this year will be Illinois Wesleyan, who is ranked #1 in preseason polls, with Augustana and North Central coming in close behind. The team is focusing this year on the importance of working together. Coach Katie says it’s really about “creating that team culture.” Standout all-conference catcher Alyssa Voegele returns this year, though 16 | March 2016

GET THERE Millikin home baseball games are held at Sunnyside Park’s Lou Renner Field on Decatur’s west side at 1590 N. Sunnyside Road. Catch the home opener March 30 at 4 pm against Blackburn College! See Millikin’s softball team in action at Rotary Park Field #5, 2450 S. Route 51 in Decatur. Don’t miss the home opener April 5 at 4 pm against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Check out both teams’ full schedules at http://athletics.millikin.edu/.

A Wizardry Duel of Epic Proportions: Harlem Wizards vs Decatur Muggles By Caitlin Loethen

28 | March 2016

J.K. Rowling likely didn’t envision muggles and wizards battling one another on a basketball court at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when she created the legendary Harry Potter series. Typically, in a school setting when muggles and wizards are at odds, a Quidditch field, broomsticks and a golden snitch are involved. That won’t be the case on Friday, April 8, when the Harlem Wizards land in Decatur and arrive at Stephen Decatur Middle School. Founded in 1962 by New York sports promoter Howie Davis, the Harlem Wizards have continuously grown, with athletes lending their talents in basketball wizardry for fundraising events for more than 50 years to different communities, non-profit organizations and schools throughout the U.S. Decatur will be one of the stops on their annual tour, generating funds to benefit two of Decatur’s public schools: Dennis Lab School and Johns Hill Magnet School. “Beth Creighton found this opportunity for us (Dennis Lab School) over the

summer, and we thought our kids and families would love it. We knew we couldn’t do it by ourselves, so we reached out to Johns Hill to see if staff and parents wanted to join their efforts in bringing the Harlem Wizards to Decatur,” says Beth Nolan, co-chair of the Dennis Community Co-Op. Revenue from the fundraiser will be divided equally in the classrooms to support the ongoing success of the schools. These provided resources are not always available in the schools’ budgets, and they’re not always available because Dennis Lab School and Johns Hill Magnet School have a focused curriculum. Dennis Lab School has a project-based learning focus, whereas Johns Hill Magnet School is a fine arts school. “In addition to doing our show, that afternoon [the Wizards] will be doing assemblies in six local elementary schools,” says Beth. “They’ll have one of their players in the gym doing a preview of what the show will be about.” Three of those elementary schools include Parsons Elementary School, French Academy and Robertson Charter School. Harlem Wizards from page 29

The Decatur team facing the Harlem Wizards have taken the name “Muggles” as a fun wordplay on Rowling’s Harry Potter. The cast of characters playing, however, will not include individuals by the names of Hermoine Granger, Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, or “He Who Shall Not Be Named” but rather administrators and teachers from both schools, student athletes, firemen and policemen, as well as local celebrities. Doors will open at 6 pm, with the game beginning at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, via the Harlem Wizards website. Simply go to the calendar of events and select “Decatur, IL,” on Friday, April 8. General Admission costs $10 per ticket, $15 for reserved seats, and $25 for Court Side Plus seats. This ticket option will entitle ticketholders to a pre-game meet-andgreet with the Harlem Wizards. The online box office closes 24 hours before the event. Tickets will be available at the door while

Come one, come all to this night of entertainment that will be available right in our own community’s backyard.

THRIVE Q&A

JEANNE STAHLHEBER

What’s the best way to get bowled over in Decatur? What better person to ask than Jeanne Stahlheber, Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Illinois and organizer of Bowl For Kids’ Sake. We asked her for the secrets to striking it rich on fun. Photo: Sarah Jane

FAVORITE THING TO DO IN SPRING

Working in my gardens. I consider that to be my "dirt therapy," and it helps me to take my mind off of other things going on in the world.

FAVORITE FAMILY OUTING

We enjoy the lake and consider it one of Decatur's finest assets! A cruise around the lake basins, stopping in a cove to do some snacking and swimming, or pulling skiers and tubers – it's all good.

FAVORITE DATE NIGHT

A quiet dinner out at one of our many quaint restaurants in town.

WHY BOWLING?

Well, I'd have to say, "Why not bowling?” Bowling is fun with family, friends and co-workers, and anyone can do it! It's also good exercise, so you can check it all off at once.

MOST EXCITING PART OF BOWL FOR KIDS’ SAKE

We have Pla-Mor mix colored bowling pins in with the white ones. When one comes up in the head position and you get a strike, you get a McDonald's certificate for a free cheeseburger. When the M.C. calls out "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger" over the microphone, it gets everyone involved and puts a little playful pressure on the bowler to make the strike.

SOMETHING ABOUT BOWL FOR KIDS’ SAKE THAT WOULD SURPRISE US

If we get our lanes filled with bowlers, we can bring in $80,000! That's a great fun fact for the kids we serve.

ABOUT BBBS?

Anyone can be a "Big." We have mentors who are age 16 on up to 80+, and couples can be Bigs as well, taking turns seeing their Little Brother or Sister and involving them in family activities.

WHAT’S NEW FOR THIS YEAR’S BOWL FOR KIDS’ SAKE

We've had success with Bowl For Kids' Sake, and we want people to expect more of the same fun they've experienced year after year. Free bowling, Pizza Hut pizza, door prizes, a T-shirt and opportunities to earn hoodies and Visa gift cards.
