Mini Maker Faire The Decatur Mini Maker Faire of Central Illinois, held April 9, offered technology tinkering and exploring. Attendees engaged with mechanics to fly drones, run 3-D printers, and even make ice cream by riding a bike!
'Nastics at Pop's Place The 'Nastics, a rock-n-roll band based out of Monticello, played to a packed house at Pop's Place the first weekend in April. The 'Nastics specialize in an eclectic mix of classic and modern rock including Joe Cocker, Jackson Brown, The Replacements, The Stones, Cheap Trick, Steely Dan and much more.

Songwriters Unite
"Dr. Dave" Burdick led a Songwriters' Workshop at Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Cafe on April 7. The event showcased Millikin University writers and musicians, while the location showcased scratchmade soup and bakery items.
Staley Mansion Staley Museum hosted its Grand Opening April 9 starring period themed dress. Featuring the history of Decatur and Macon County, the museum displays memorabilia from the Staley family and temporary exhibits that highlight local history and agriculture.
Animal Attraction Scovill Zoo kicked off its 49th year with new exhibits and friendly species on April 2. Guests got an up-close experience with many of the animals, while the petting zoo featured four new goats born on opening day!

Decatur IL Moms hosted Sweet Repeats, the semi-annual kids sale of the season, on April 7. Shoppers lined up early for great deals on gently used children's clothing, travel gear, books and hand-crafted accessories.

Devin Willams, a blues musician based out of the midwest, opened up for Bric-a-Brac at Lock Stock in early April. Bric-a-Brac is a band of accomplished Decatur-area musicians with wide musical influences. Find them on Facebook to catch their next show!

Me Oh My Oh – on the Bayou! As much as I love being able to use a downhome authentic Hank Williams’ song reference, what I love even more is getting my taste buds on some serious low-country flavor right here in Decatur. And thankfully, Baby TALK exceeds my expectations every year at the annual Grillin’ in the Garden event, its annual fundraiser and my annual opportunity to eat my weight in Louisiana-style seafood. This is without a doubt a can’t-miss foodie opportunity, and I encourage you to grab your tickets for the May 20 event, set for 6-9 pm at Baby TALK headquarters, 500 E. Lake Shore Dr. This year on the menu, artfully prepared by Bizou, is a seafood boil dump containing crawfish, shrimp, new potatoes, sausage and
corn. Combine that Cajun goodness with pulled pork sliders, cornbread, grits and slaw. And I haven’t even gotten to the best part – a dessert bar fit for the likes of a bayou queen – with pound cake and fresh fruit topping, moon pies and pralines. Stars in My Eyes for Stars over Athens I could write a love song about my feelings for Greek cuisine – oh, baklava, how I love thee. Decatur residents have long been spoiled to the delicacies of Greek cuisine, and the annual Stars over Athens Festival, coming up on May 5 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, never disappoints. For a food connoisseur like myself, I would say that I’d be hard pressed to find better Greek and Mediterranean baked goods and savory specialties, and the dear St. Catherine’s Society continues to tease the taste buds of all fiercely dedicated event patrons like myself.
Food offerings include mini gyros, pasticho (Greek lasagna), Greek cheese puffs, Greek salad and bread and of course, baklava, among a host of other traditional cuisine. Not only are the food offerings a sweet deal, but the church’s own Athenian dancers along with Gus Kastanis and his Holiday in Greece Band provide a day of amazing entertainment. Participants learn painting from one of our artist members, but they also learn from an old Master. Recreating images by the old masters has long been a respected and effective way to learn painting techniques. Assisted by our member artists, participants are guided through

OAKWOOD BLOCK PARTY VS RHYTHMIC There Ain’t No Party Like an Oakwood Block Party Cuz an Oakwood Block Party Don’t Stop! By Caitlin Loethen Photos by Kim Mangan It’s lucky number seven for Decatur’s Oakwood Block Party, a party in the streets that appeals across all generations. For seven years, The Oakwood Business Association has been hosting the free monthly summer events in Decatur’s West End between Lock Stock and Barrel and Donnie’s Homespun Pizza. “We do anything from blues, reggae, funk, bluegrass, soul, rock, hip hop and punk, but we try to keep it so people of all ages can enjoy— that way they won’t want to hold their ears

and run away,” says Mike Tasch, Treasurer for the Oakwood Business Association and coordinator for the Oakwood Block Party. And the formula is working—the group expects at least 1,000 Decaturites to attend each event this year. On Saturday, May 7, the 2016 Oakwood Block Party season kicks off, beginning 5pm and continuing well into the early morning hours. Essentially, the format for the 2016 Oakwood Block Party will remain the same, with the only difference occurring theme-wise. “With the

In addition to a variety of musical performances throughout the night, you can also explore wares for sale from various nonfood vendors. If you’re one who likes to sit, Mike suggests bringing your own lawn chair as seating is not provided, but food and drinks will be available through the local restaurants in the area, so be sure to bring your appetite with you. Then come to an event created out of a desire to get back in touch with the spirit of celebration! Off Broadway hit Rhythmic Circus is coming to the Kirkland Fine Arts Center on May 7. Featuring four world-renowned dancers along with a seven-piece band, Rhythmic Circus presents an inspirational show that will light a fire for the arts for kids and adults alike, as they enjoy the excitement of dance and the
amazement of brilliant musicians who each play a multitude of instruments. This experienced group of performers is sure to excite, says Jan Traughber, director of Kirkland Fine Arts Center. Established in 2007, the dancers and musicians are experts in their field, and the show, Feet Don’t Fail Me Now, presents unique music created specifically for the event. The show also features a beat-boxing sensation from Minnesotan Aaron “Heatbox” Heaton, who is sure to leave you in awe. From fun and funky costume changes to energetic musical stylings, the show is “upbeat, fun and energetic,” says Jan. She first saw the show at an Arts Midwest Conference years ago and knew she had to get the group to perform at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center. At the time they performed at the conference, Jan had
never heard of the group before and was blown away by their energy and connection to the audience. OICON Forsyth Disc Golf Open Puts a New Spin on Spring By Katie O’Riley There’s a new kid in town on the tournament trek, and it’s sure to be a fun driver for kids of all ages! On May 28, Forsyth’s new disc golf course will host the Forsyth Disc Golf Open, a professional-caliber tournament. Disc golf is played with a Frisbee-like disc, with the objective to get the disc into a metal basket that is a couple of feet above ground. “The town of Forsyth has really stepped up to help host this event,” says Johnnie Harrison, owner of Plastic Addicts Disc Golf Supplies and event organizer. The village has contributed to make it a Professional Disc Golf AssociationSanctioned B Tier tournament. Forsyth’s course has 18 holes, and players will play two rounds during the event. Disc golf has been around since 1976, and interest and participation are growing every day. People young and old, all over the world, are getting involved in this sport. The Soy City Challenge, another disc golf tournament, has taken place at Decatur’s Nelson Park since 2011. Anyone can participate in the tournament, and it’s free to attend as a spectator! Johnnie, who hosts as many as 20 tournaments around Central Illinois each year, says the most important take away is “anyone can play.” Players will be divided into categories based on experience level, and competitive players will travel from Indiana and Missouri to play on some of the courses in the Central Illinois area. Participants can sign up online or at the event during check-in, tentatively set for 7:30 am with tee off at 9:30 am. More on page 30

Summer’s always a mad dash for fun, so as we’re coming to the starting line of one of our fair city’s most unique events, Amazing Race, we wanted the inside track. So we sat down with Elizabeth Creighton, Co-Chair of the Dennis Lab School (DLS) Community Co-Op, to get the scoop.

The growth and positivity surrounding the changes at DLS over the past few years has really helped foster a new, positive vibe in the West End. MOST EXCITING PART OF DENNIS LAB SCHOOL There is always something happening at DLS.... whether it is a local expert coming in to visit a classroom, a group of students venturing to Millikin's campus for class or a new PBL (Project-Based Learning) created by the students that has a lasting impact on the community. Lucky for us, it turned out to be a lot of fun, and we are excited about bringing it back on Saturday, May 7.
